The Small Enterprise Development (SED) Jakarta has conducted training for cooperative boards in Puncak, West Java on October 28 – 29, 2008. The training is attended by the cooperatives’ PJ (small group leaders) from the three ADRA’s facilitated cooperatives, which is located in Kapuk, Ketapang, and Kampung Bandan. The training involved some activities such as giving the PJ inputs on how to reactivate members to be more active in attending their group meeting, evaluation of performance and group administration, explanation of PJs job description, and creativity-trigger games.

ADRA staff also conducted various team-building activities to encourage the team unity and to create sense of belonging between the members and its group. The training has resulted a good progress in PJ performances afterward and the impact were affected the cooperative members to be more active and fully participate in their cooperative activities.

The cooperatives PJs were seriously listening the explanation about cooperative member activation methods given by ADRA.

Comparative Study in Pangandaran One of ADRA’s supports to help the growth of cooperative is by conducting a comparative study which was held on November 1 – 7 2008. SED Jakarta staffs initiatively conducted a comparative study visit to SED Pangandaran. The cooperative leaders from SED Jakarta, SED Pangandaran cooperative members, and ADRA Staffs had participated in this activity. Both projects has exchanged their knowledge of starting alternative business and generating income, sharing experiences of having the well managed cooperatives, motivating, and encouraging each other to build a stronger cooperative and reaching more members from the communities. The beneficiaries from SED Jakarta and Pangandaran also had planned to set up businesses and its network together. SED Jakarta and Pangandaran also met the local government and conducted a presentation to socialize the ADRA SED Women Empowerment programs and its impacts for Jakarta and Pangandaran community. Surprisingly, the government is very pleased and gave a warm welcome for the visit of SED Jakarta and the programs offered by ADRA SED through its local branch of SED Pangandaran, and they are hoping for its impact in economic development ADRA may possibly do to improve communities’ quality of life in the area of Pangandaran, West Java.

November Meeting An Invitation of The Ministry of Cooperative and Small/Medium Enterprise of the Government of Indonesia 25-27 November 2008
On last week of November, The Ministry of Cooperative and Small/Medium Enterprise of the GoI held a meeting for cooperatives endeavor. ADRA beneficiaries in 3 cooperatives of Kapuk, Ketapang and Kampung Bandan also got the privilege to attend. At least 10 members of Kapuk, Ketapang and Kampung Bandan cooperatives and also Tunas Wanita Abadi Cooperative (one of facilitated cooperatives in SED phase I project)attended the meeting. They were 14 people in total attending the meeting. Some tips, tricks and practical inputs in running the cooperative were being shared by the speakers. They are the representative of the Ministry of Cooperative and Small Medium Enterprise who was speaking about the socialization of cooperative formation initiated by community business group, the representative of Economic Administration Bureau of DKI Jakarta Province Secretary who was presenting the regulations of DKI Jakarta government in Small Medium Enterprise Assistance, the representative of the Law Firm for Cooperative Legal Status, who was speaking about ways to process cooperative legal status and the availability of his law firm to provide the service with reasonable cost and the representative of one of successful Saving-Lending Cooperative in Jakarta, who was sharing its cooperative ways in enhancing cooperative businesses as a strong Saving and Lending Cooperative also its various products.
On the following day, the meeting was being held to put Cooperative Funders in this case some public Banks such as Mandiri and Bukopin also two Government institutions such as Askrindo and Pegadaian (Goods Leasing Institution) and microfinance organizations together to seek the possibilities of these two parties for cooperation in funding. Many advantages, the cooperatives could get out of the meeting. They got some inspirations on how to develop a strong cooperative including its alternative source of funding also the fact that Tunas Harapan Pertiwi Cooperative (Kapuk), by the hard work of SED Field Officer for Organization is now in process of obtaining its legal status in the Law Firm of one of the invitee speakers. Not only that, these 3 cooperatives also got the recognition from the Government of Indonesia in provincial level as well as a good relationship. It is expected that this relationship will be maintained for the future of the cooperatives. (ADRA)
