Welcome! TO OUR JUN/JUL ISSUE
Welcome to our June/July issue. Can you believe it's winter already? My goodness, hasn't this year just flown by in the blink of an eye. This issue we have a special feature on bedrooms for both adults and kids. I have to admit, the bedroom is one of my favourite places to be! For me, my bedroom is my sanctuary; a retreat from the everyday hustle and bustle. A place I can sleep, dream and relax. I also love the fact that I can change the mood of my room instantly with new linen and cushions. It really is the one room in the house you can instantly makeover with not much effort. We've got plenty of bedroom products within the pages of this issue too – get set to be inspired. Bring on a winter bedroom makeover I say! Today is not just the day this online issue is released, it's also the date our printed 'Paradise' edition goes on sale in newsagents across Australia! I'm completely smitten with the new printed edition and I hope you all can get a chance to grab a copy and enjoy. If your local newsagent doesn't have it, or has run out, simply order online in the Adore Home online shop. We'll post anywhere in Australia – the total cost is $17 (including postage fee). I promise it's worth it.

"Penelope loves to style her room and have a place for everything. It was important that she had a tent where she could read her books, a desk for drawing and shelves to style.
Belinda said her client loved the idea of a pastel colour palette and was keen to incorporate Penelope's love of purple – without going overboard! Belinda’s tips ON WORKING WITH COLOUR USE WISELY Don't be afraid of colour, but use wisely. Bold accessories work well with neutral walls and bed colours.
BLOCK COLOURS When using wallpaper or decals, stick with block coloured bedding or rugs.
DIFFERENT TONES Consider using different tones in similar colour families and always ground the scheme with timber or a textured rug.

1 While Eleashah doesn't claim to be an interior designer, her son's bedroom says otherwise. It is a veritable feast of bespoke bits and pieces that have been thoughtfully combined with colour and shape to inspire delight within a young boy. Eleashah says her inspiration was drawn from her love of yellow and the two-tone circular floor rug. From there she worked her magic
introducing pops of green against a monochromatic scheme. Then, using paint, craft tape and a great deal of care she crafted a geometric patterned headboard as the perfect statement. "I wanted a room that my son is able to grow up in and not out of," she said, adding "I didn't want to include anything that couldn't be changed." It's impossible to ignore the references to Toy Story, which Eleashah says is a favourite

movie and therefore holds great relevance. "He loves all of the characters... and his bedtime routine consists of singing "You've Got A Friend In Me." Like many kids, Mason is the owner
of many bits and bobs which when left lying around, can make a room look messy. In a show of genius, Eleashah added drawers and doors to his cupboard from which to store and conceal the offending toys.

This month we talk to Gold Coast based artist and one half of Astella Designs, Bec Tarrant, who with her dad Steve, take a more adventurous approach to create stunning, abstract works inspired by nature and the beauty that surrounds. INTERVIEW PIP MILLER PHOTOGRAPHY & STYLING TANIKA BLAIR
artist profile Tell us a little bit about your art practice and the different mediums and textures you use. We use a combination of mediums, textures, and methods to create our artworks. Experimenting with different chemicals sounds dangerous, but it alters the reactions in the resin that create different styles and features. We also use acrylics and acrylic inks to create our desired effects. Would you describe Astella Designs as adventurous and experimental? That would be the perfect way to describe us. We love experimenting, unfortunately as I mentioned that can get a little dangerous. In fact I've actually set myself on fire! But I believe as an artist you must always be evolving and growing so I love trying new things to achieve new effects. Where is your practice at now in 2015? Having only launched our artworks in September 2014, we have grown and expanded exponentially in a very short time frame. One of our immediate goals was to distribute our artwork Australia wide to each state, and after only seven months we are nearly there, which is hugely exciting. How has the online world changed or impacted on your 78
career as an artist? The online world has assisted us a great deal, in fact without it we're fairly sure it would have taken years to build the business to where we are now in just seven months with our website www.AstellaDesigns.com.au and Instagram account @astelladesigns. Instagram has been a huge help for growing Astella. As a photo sharing platform it suits our business model perfectly and has allowed us to grow our business and reach more people than we could have ever imagined.
Your website comprises of a gallery of resin, canvas and print works – tell me about your typical customer if there is one. Where have you sent works to? Is it mainly prints or resin? When Astella was first born, I was focused on prints of my watercolour work. I began to venture towards resin as my father Steve has been working with the chemicals for 15 years, making it a natural progression. From the moment I delved into resin, I fell in love and although my prints are still hugely popular I just don't have enough hours in the day to get back to the paintbrush. Currently I am working on a new limited edition series of prints of
Having grown up on the Gold Coast living on the waterfront I am inspired quite heavily by nature... the Astella Designs resin work, so watch this space! As for customers, we have had orders from across the world including USA, New Zealand and Norway, just to name a few. It's an amazing feeling to have customers choosing your art over artists closer to them. It's a huge compliment.
What is it that motivates you and where do you draw inspiration from? I love creating, so not a lot of motivation is required. Whenever I get the chance to get to the studio, I'm there. It's a great release for me, a place where I can clear my mind and focus 100% on a particular artwork. Having grown up on the Gold Coast living on the waterfront I am inspired quite heavily by nature, as I am constantly reminded how beautiful it is. I try to reflect on that when I'm creating my art.
Finally, as a mother, how do you integrate time for art and keep the creative fires burning so to speak. It can certainly be tough balancing my time between 80
running a household, looking after a toddler, and getting to the studio with enough energy to be creative, but I get a lot of support from my partner Shaun and my parents. There are days when the fire isn't burning, and I have learnt that you can't force creativity – no matter how motivated you are! So taking a step back and regrouping is just as important because then when I step back into the studio those are the days when some truly amazing art comes to life.

company, Stone Textile. Yet the roles of this Austin, Texas-based product designer and interior stylist mesh as impeccably as her signature tie-dye leather and cotton throw pillows. What's keeping it all in-sync? Elizabeth's vintage-meetsmodern approach to design, inspired by her grandmother – a "strong woman" who ran her own antiques business in the 1960s and 70s, and for whom the company is named, she says. "I use the hidden patterns found in her vintage bracelets, rings and earrings to create modern fabric prints, and the same approach goes into my interiors," Elizabeth says. "I love incorporating one-of-a-kind vintage pieces with modern ones." Stone Textile's throw pillows, for example – launching a new collection soon – add a chic twist to bohemian style by combining unexpected textures and patterns.
"Our customers purchase our products for their distinct style, so we make not-so-obvious design decisions so they can accessorise their homes with something cool and different." Elizabeth's passion for classiccontemporary design also takes centre stage at her home, a wall-to-wall blend of vintage and avant-garde furnishings, complemented by an understated colour palette and of course, pattern panache. "My home is full of one-of-akind pieces I have sourced from all over," she says. Indeed, her dining table reigns from West Palm Beach; her bed, from Palm Springs. Wallpaper? Vintage, from New York. It's all about decorating with pieces that tell a story rather than reflecting a catalogue, which is why antique fairs are the place to go, Elizabeth says. While a neutral palette is the canvas for her design technique, Elizabeth admits to allowing bold accents to command a room, if it works.
"I love using unique materials

Pop of fuchsia
"I am still surprised at some of the bold colour choices I made for my Austin home. The fuchsia pink over dye rug in the living room was one of my first purchases, and I built the living/dining space around it. I took a big colour risk with the pink and still love it," Elizabeth explains.
Elizabeth made a lot of cosmetic changes to the kitchen. "We ripped out the backslash and added a geometric, black and white pattern," she says. "The cabinets were painted bright white to give the kitchen a clean and modern look. We tackled (them) ourselves, which was quite the project!"
"I wanted to do something special in the guest bathroom," says Elizabeth. "I found a vintage Mylar wallpaper from the '70s at one of my favourite shops in New York, called 'Second Hand Rose'."
"It was one of my first purchases, and I built the living/dining space around it. I took a big colour risk with the pink and still love it." Mixing different patterns is another way Elizabeth adds interest to her home, particularly with the tribalinspired upholstery, bedding and wall furnishings: "I love a good print. Mixing (them) is something I always like to do in a space." She opted for Stone Textile's Deco Stripe wallpaper and Diamond and Tribe Print fabrics throughout her house. How does she achieve such perfect pattern harmony? "I try and stay in the same colour palette, following with a larger, more abstract print in the background and a smaller, geometric print on top," Elizabeth says. For more inspiration, check out Elizabeth's blog, Stone Textile At Home. Ideal for any modern design lover, it covers everything from "current and vintage fashion trends, to the newest local restaurant, to the artist I have my eye on," Elizabeth says, adding she loves sharing unique finds with her readers.
Vintage style dining
"I wanted to find special pieces for the dining room," says Elizabeth. "The table base is a vintage lucite piece from the '70s and the chairs are original Milo Baughman. They are very comfortable!"
"Our bedroom has a ton of beautiful, natural light, so I chose to paint the walls dark," Elizabeth explains. "We used 'Temptation Gray' by Benjamin Moore."
"My desk was custom-made for the space," says Elizabeth. "I chose to finish it in a bold colour to complement the black and white, throughout. The mirror above the sofa is one of my favourite vintage finds to date."

out and about What is fika? Good question… fika is a Swedish word whose meaning is music to shoppers' ears – taking a break for coffee and something to eat. However, according to the owners, Linda, Diana and Sophie, and our Manly escort, Briar Stanley, it is way more than that. It is a cosy and welcoming retreat where you can be nurtured – just like you would in a family or close friend's kitchen. The interiors are the epitome of everything we love about Scandinavian style – clean lines, minimalist furniture but with a friendly splash of colour in the very patriotic Swedish palette of royal blue and yellow. The menu is also reflective of the Swedish culture and has been designed
for enjoyment in an Australian setting. "I love the sunny interior of Fika Swedish Kitchen, and I can always order a delicious coffee (skim flat white) every time. I'm also a bit partial to the house-cured salmon and smashed avocado for breakfast, and Sunday loves the cinnamon buns."
