May was fab - a bit of sunshine for the Jazz festival, plenty of gigs on around the county and the impending optimism that accompanies calendar changing to Junes. For this months column I just want to write about something I was involved in organising and managing - the BBC Introducing on Tour event at the University of Gloucestershire. Of course, my roots run deep with both organisations so it seemed completely natural that I got the phone call when it came to putting it together. Despite my initial attempts to get a Gloucestershire only band list, we ended up with local chaps Metropolis performing alongside fellow regional nominees Blacklit Canopy, Seasfire and the excellent Bite the Buffalo. It was recorded and filmed in the style of a funkier Jools Holland and the program is almost complete and ready to share. Why is this important to this column? Well, isn’t it nice that Gloucestershire ended up hosting one of the largest ever regional collaborations with the BBC to create a unique program the promotes new and unsigned music? This sort of thing can (and does) just happen now because of the musical, educational and institutional support in place. Once the idea was floated, it was simply a case of organising the logistics around it - a task that would have been exceptionally more difficult a few years ago... Another reason why I’m quitting : ) A

Fabio Thomas On...The Feddens

10 Minute Review

Words: Fabio Thomas | Picture: The Feddens

Gaz Coombes @ The Guildhall, Gloucester (19.04.13)

Lots of music critics seem to regurgitate the cliché that a band’s sound is “indescribable”. When approaching The Feddens’ new single ‘Semaphore’ however, I found several unexpected phrases; “juicy” and “tasty” to pick a few from the comments on their soundcloud page. Whilst I am not quite rad enough to understand how to taste a song, I can definitely see where the “juicy” comment has come from, as the production gives the track a punchy and full sound. The delayed guitar melodies and off beat drums highlight influences such as Two Door Cinema Club.

“It’s good to be back in Guildford,” states Gaz Coombes after the opening song tonight. That may well be true, but unfortunately he is back in Gloucester, not Guildford. Sheepish apologies are forthcoming and Coombes rallies back with all of the confidence of a 20 year plus bona-fide rock star after going all Spinal Tap on us.

The nonchalantly flat vocals put forth the track’s perplexing subject. ‘Semaphore’ refers to “variable or abstract data type that provides a simple but useful abstraction for controlling access by multiple processes to a common resource” (thankgod for Wiki). Whilst the computer science reference has gone straight over my head, the theme of the song seems a nod to the more electro influences of Kraftwerk or Hot Chip, which can be heard throughout. Ending in a rough-around-the-edges chant, which is in the in the style of Foxygen’s ‘On Blue Mountain’, ‘Semaphore’ is a “tasty” (I am giving it a go) example of up-tempo indie dance.

He’s been there, done it, got the t-shirt (and the sideburns trimmed) and is now playing the Gloucester Guidhall again after 19 years, seeming genuinely pleased to be here with his new band and new tunes. Although not immediately catchy, each song is driven and atmospheric – his vocals are spot on throughout (would you expect anything less?). A few people at the front bounce around when the pace is upped and everyone listens when he takes to the keyboards for a new slow one. An hour passes quickly, the band leave the stage and Coombes returns on his own to serenade us with three Supergrass hits. Immediately camera phones are lofted in the air for the first time tonight as the opening chords of ‘Moving’ are struck. It could be 1999 again, except there’s not a swaying lighter in sight and most people are about to rush home to relieve their babysitters.
