Now you'll need a coffee, why not a cup of Mondulkiri coffee? Far in the easternmost reaches of the Kingdom lies Cambodia’s largest, yet most sparsely populated province in the country. Time to discover the celebrated and iconic temples of Angkor Wat and the Bayon could not be easier to reach from Siem Reap, being less than 10 kilometres from the city centre. If you have time to travel further in the province, however, you have the opportunity to behold an often overlooked marvel: Beng Mealea, a mysterious monument which crumbles charmingly enclosed in dense jungle. Beng Mealea - whose name means “lotus pond” in Khmer - was originally erected as a Hindu temple. It stands about 40 kilometres east of the main Angkor group and was discovered alongside the royal highway which connected the “Great City” of Angkor Thom with Preah Khan Kompong Svay temple in modern day Preah Vihear province.

Entertainment time. A large shadow takes form on the surface of an immaculate white screen. It dances elegantly with controlled and precise movements, in perfect unison with the high-pitch, mesmerizing sounds of the orchestra. Soon the shadow is joined by others, engaging in a battle that will have them gliding gracefully from one side of the screen to the other. Behind them, a fire blazes fiercely, fueling the shadows' lives. A part of Cambodia's history. The Khmer harp went missing and has not been heard since the 14th century in Cambodia, it is estimated. That was until ethnomusicologist Patrick Kersalé found evidence of the ancient instrument during more than two decades of exploration in remote areas of South East Asia and India. We also take a trip to Ho Chi Minh City; Vietnam’s centre of commerce and the country’s biggest city. As a result of the sweeping economic changes brought on by Doi Moi in 1986, this effervescent city, perched on the banks of the Saigon River and still known as Saigon to its eight million or so inhabitants, has changed its image from that of a war-torn city to one of a thriving metropolis. Time to visit a new destination. Welcome to the city of the future! Shanghai is a megalopolis way ahead of the pack, setting the benchmarks for the modern world. So sit back, relax, and let the world fly by as you enjoy your flight with Cambodia Angkor Air. The Editorial Team

cambodia's

weather

july-august 2020

What’s the weather like in Cambodia in July-August? Cambodia has two seasons each year, with the dry season lasting from October to April, and the wet season lasting from May to September. July is one of the wettest months in Cambodia, but rain usually falls in short, sharp showers and doesn’t last all day. Although you’ll certainly experience rain at this time of year, the tourist attractions are much quieter making this a good month to visit if you want to avoid the high season crowds.

Averages In July/August, the average temperature in Cambodia hovers around 27°C, making this month warm but not unbearably hot. In Phnom Penh, temperatures reach highs of 32°C and lows of 24°C at night, with around 40mm of rain expected over the course of the month. In Siem Reap, temperatures are very similar, with almost a 60% chance of rain each day. If you want to take a swim, the sea’s still balmy at this time of year, making it perfect for snorkelling or trying out water sports.

Cambodia Angkor Air Flights Bring Home Nationals and Internationals Stranded by COVID-19 Earlier in June, Cambodia Angkor Air (K6) has dispatched a special plane to India, New Delhi repatriating 60 Cambodian citizens, who were unable to travel back due to the travel restriction. K6 hasn’t only brought back Cambodian passengers but also helped to repatriate citizens of the Philippines. More than 100 Philippine citizens have returned home from Phnom Penh to reunite with their families. These flights could not have happened without strong support, and kind cooperation from all involved. K6 is particularly grateful to the Royal Government of Cambodia, the government of India, the Embassy of the Republic of the Philippines, business partners, agencies and all K6’s staff especially in the frontiers.

PHNOM PENH GUIDE

Phnom Penh’s bevy of businesses have grown to offer something for everyone, meaning there’s never been a better time to visit the Kingdom’s capital. Here’s our selection of outstanding establishments to get you started:

Central Market The Central Market is an Art Deco landmark of Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia. The bright yellow building completed in 1937 has a 26m high central dome, with four tall arch-roofed arms branching out diagonally across the block, creating vast hallways housing countless stalls and all kinds of goods. Initially designed by city architect Jean Desbois, construction works were supervised by French architect Louis Chauchon. When it first opened in 1937, it was said to be the biggest market in Asia; today it still operates as a market. After Phnom Penh became the capital of the French protectorate of Cambodia within French Indochina in 1867, the population grew enormously and the French set about creating a spacious modern city. It was designed by Jean Desbois (1891 Cherbourg -1971 Lorient), the architect of the city from 1931-37. The works are entrusted to the Indochinese Society of Studies and Construction which has already built the markets of Battambang and Cholon. Since its completion, wet season flooding around the market has remained a problem, a reminder of the marshland it once was.

The visitors' entrance to the compound is at the corner of Streets 13 and 178. The Royal University of Fine Arts is located on the west side of the museum. The museum is under the authority of the Cambodian Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts. Charming Coastal Getaways Cambodia's coastline offers scenic and charming getaways for tourists, locals and expats. Despite the constant and rapid evolution of the fast-developing Southeast Asian nation, destination towns such as Kampot and Kep are foodies favourites, while the jungle sprawl and mountainous Koh Kong entice adventurers. The islands off the southern coast (basking in the Gulf of Thailand) remain an attractive relaxing option, although there are plenty of adrenaline activities to keep everyone entertained. Kep Kep is a quaint and quiet seaside town, often viewed as the little cousin of Kampot. What it lacks in things to do and with a less vibrant social scene than other destinations, it makes up for with excellent seafood, especially the crab, which alone attracts many visitors, local and international. A walk around the crab markets is a must-do! There is also a picturesque small stretch of sandy beach and a calm bay in which to swim to escape the baking sun. Afterwards, wander over, dry off and relax on the nearby hammocks, or at the bars, cafÊs and restaurants and take in some of the most beautiful sunsets Cambodia has to offer. Kep is also is very affordable to stay in, but visitors are spoiled for choice with hotels, guesthouses and numerous rustic lodges which offer pools and hillside retreats. The Kep Sailing Club is a high-end retreat that also excels in fine dining and fantastic views from its pier. Short term trips off to Rabbit Island or treks into the Kep National Park are highly recommended but it’s just as easy to sip on ice-cold drinks, lounge on the beach and lose yourself for a few days at this coastal retreat.

Kampot Kampot town is a top destination to unwind in and enjoy the cooler weather in the shadow of Bokor Mountain and the national park. As an added bonus, the riverside town has an excellent culinary scene catering for all palates and budgets. Accessing Kampot from Phnom Penh, Kep or Sihanoukville is very easy with a range of travel options by road. There is also a diverse selection of accommodation from budget hostels, hotels for all wallets and even modern pampering resorts. It's definitely a laid back town, but there is a good night scene with live music and occasional events taking place, especially from the art scene. Day trips to Bokor National Park are recommended to soak in the views (or the selfies), exploring waterfalls and enjoy the winding road up to the summit. Outside of the town, you can also venture out by caving, kayaking down rivers, and in the countryside sample the famous Kampot pepper and farms. Cruises on the river (especially around sunset) are fantastic but adventure-seekers can also go on quads and motorbikes for short term or day trip adventures. Recent additions to Kampot are the camping getaway offered by The Safari, and a small riverside beach in Kampot town.

Koh Kong Koh Kong Province, lying in the south-west of Cambodia, used to be more challenging to reach but is being opened up via new roads and access routes. The main drawcard is the Cardamom (Kravanh) mountains, a range that stretches for 300 kilometres into Thailand. Ecotourism is still a major factor in luring tourists and adventure seekers. Chi Phat is ideal for hikes, kayaking, mountain-biking as well as exploring the local flora and fauna. Other key attractions in the area are the mangroves (accessible via wooden walkways) and the photogenic TaTai Waterfalls. Accommodation is more rustic, and homestays, bungalows and lodges are the norms. 4 Rivers Floating Lodge provides high-end pampering combining luxury and exclusivity but is still very nature focussed. Shinta Mani Wild is another ultra-luxury resort which offers treetop tents with views of the surrounding jungle and waterfalls. You can also venture to Koh Kong Island for unspoiled sandy white beaches, diving, snorkelling and fishing trips.

Sihanoukville & the islands The biggest seaside city in Cambodia, Sihanoukville has seen some dramatic changes in recent years. The port city is used as a gateway to the lush Cambodian islands while the actual transformation of the city is underway with a frenetic amount of new hotels, condominiums and casinos under construction. Cruise ships also disembark at Sihanoukville and use the opportunity to explore the coast. The Queenco Hotel offers a range of watersports and activities and tours as well as an excellent resort-style setup. The often calm and turquoise waters are blessed with tropical islands, perfect for fishing, diving and island-hopping. Koh Ta Kiev, Bambu Island and Koh Preah are perfect for exploring, but it is best advised to use the local tour companies who can tailor packages to suit your needs. The lodging options on the islands themselves are diverse and you need to select where you stay depending on how pampered you want your paradise getaway to be. There are some stretches of Koh Rong that are more popular with backpackers and parties, while Koh Rong Samloem has plenty of more chilled options. New luxury resorts are also popping up on Koh Rong. However, both islands are excellent for relaxing and taking in those postcard paradise moments. There is also very good and easy transport to the islands from Sihanoukville, so there is no reason not to treat yourself to an island getaway.

Mondulkiri

Coffee Far in the easternmost reaches of the Kingdom lies Cambodia’s largest, yet most sparsely populated province in the country: Mondulkiri. Yet, despite its relatively slight population, the province is bursting with life in the form of dense montane forests, breathtaking waterfalls, and, perhaps most notably, endless rows of coffee trees.

In-Flight Magazine July - August 2020

The rolling green slopes of the Annamite Mountains, which comprise the northeastern highlands of both Mondulkiri and neighbouring province, Ratanakiri, provide the perfect ecological conditions for producing beans predominantly of the robusta variety, unique in their rich aroma and full flavours. It’s therefore little wonder that Mondulkiri coffee has become one of the most in-demand products among both local and visiting coffee-drinkers. As a result of its increasing popularity, coffee production in the region has risen dramatically over the past few years. Coffee was first introduced by French colonialists in the late 1800s, around the same time it was introduced in Laos and Vietnam. The coffee farmers who live and work in the Mondulkiri region are primarily comprised of the indigenous farmers that have inhabited the area since well before the Angkor era. Upon the colonisation of the French, these farmers incorporated coffee cultivating and harvesting as part of their regular agricultural practices. It has since been preserved alongside their traditional language and customs, undergoing very little change throughout the years. Each of the steps involved in the production process is rigorously followed in order to produce the superior quality coffee for which Mondulkiri is renowned. The coffee plants are firstly cultivated at about 2,600 feet above sea level and irrigated by streams flowing through the area. The green coffee beans are then picked by the farmers and sold to roasters throughout the Kingdom. The traditional roasting and brewing method involves cooking the bean until very dark, before mixing it with butter or vegetable fat. This technique dates back to the French colonial era, during which local palettes preferred a sweeter, smoother flavour to that which was produced by the heavily roasted bean. The addition of animal fat and, in some cases, alcohol smoothed over any bitterness. Today, many major Cambodian roasters still use a variation of this method, mixing in additives like soybeans, corn, and chicory. The coffee is then ground to a very fine powder that is used to brew a thick, rich and dark cup, typically brewed using either a cloth sieve or coffee filter. While this is the more authentic Cambodian style of coffee roasting and brewing, many major roasters choose to implement more modern methods, such as air roasting, before grinding to a consistency that can be used in industrial coffee machines in Western style coffee shops. Whether you prefer a traditional, syrupy coffee from the local street vendor or market, or a milky, frothy cappuccino from one of Cambodia’s many upscale coffee houses, the distinct flavour of Mondulkiri coffee will no doubt leave you draining your cup. Refill, anyone?

Golf in Cambodia A Buffet Of Courses

When it comes to golf, Cambodia has come a long way in recent times, both in terms of the country as a golf tourism destination and the local golf scene. The local golf scene has seen steady growth in recent years, particularly in Phnom Penh where there is a number of local golf groups, societies and associations playing regularly. Siem Reap has always been the ‘tourist’ capital and international players still out number local players on average but the gap has certainly closed in recent years.

This is largely down to an increase in local players together with a slight downturn in the tourism industry. I would say it is the opposite in Phnom Penh with locals out numbering the tourists. However, this gap is also closing with Phnom Penh growing in popularity as a golf tourism destination.

Beng Mealea The celebrated and iconic temples of Angkor Wat and the Bayon could not be easier to reach from Siem Reap, being less than 10 kilometres from the city centre. If you have time to travel further in the province, however, you have the opportunity to behold an often overlooked marvel: Beng Mealea, a mysterious monument which crumbles charmingly enclosed in dense jungle.

Much of the overgrowth has been removed thanks to recent restoration work, and newly added wooden boardwalks have improved access to the central sanctuary. Like many others, Beng Mealea- whose name means “lotus pond” in Khmer- was originally erected as a Hindu temple. It stands about 40 kilometres east of the main Angkor group and was discovered alongside the royal highway which connected

the “Great City” of Angkor

Thom with Preah Khan Kompong Svay temple in modern day Preah Vihear province. Beng Mealea can be reached in 1.5 hours drive east from Siem Reap on National Highway 6 (in the direction of capital Phnom Penh). At Damdek town, join the highway which heads north to Koh Ker. Entrance tickets are available from $5. The layout of Beng Mealea is practically identical to that of its big brother Angkor Wat, prompting scholars to suspect it was also built in the 12th century under the instruction of King Suryavarman, although there are no historical records to support the theory. An immense moat measuring 1.2km by 900 metres surrounds the complex, with the central sanctuary thought to feature three enclosed galleries, now collapsed into their imprint following years of ruin and exposure to the elements. A breathtaking array of sandstone carvings within the temple depict the legends of Vishnu and his Avatars, plus the Hindu myth of the Churning of the Sea of Milk and numerous Buddhist motifs. Adorning the walls are a great number of carvings of female standing deities known as ‘devata’ and graceful dancers, or ‘apsaras’. Ancient accounts inform us of the high status of certain women in Khmer society, and scholars speculate that many devata portrait carvings are in fact divine representations of actual women from the time. Sizeable sandstone blocks used in construction of the temple were sourced from the renowned quarries of the nearby sacred mountain, Phnom Kulen, and travelled down a historic canal to the site. Deemed as cultural significance by UNESCO, Beng Mealea was added to the Cultural category of its World Heritage Tentative List in 1992. Visit in the early morning to take advantage of the relative cool and chance to have the temple to yourself. The ideal itinerary for a full day excursion from Siem Reap would be to combine a trip to Beng Mealea with other historical sites in the area such as Koh Ker, Prasat Bakan, Phnom Kulen, Banteay Srei, Kbal Spean and Roluos.

Captain with Cambodia Angkor Air

Oum

Q & A

Nuphea

Mr. Oum Nuphea, a Captain with Cambodia Angkor Air,

shares some of his insights into the civil aviation industry.

Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself? A: Yes, sure I can. I spent two and a half years training to become a pilot in Toulouse, France, graduating in 1997 and receiving my Air Transport Pilot Licence. I launched my professional career with Royal Air Cambodge, commanding their planes for 3 years. I then went to Thailand for 8 years to fly for Bangkok Airways, and then a further 4 years in Vietnam with Vietnam Airlines. I started my present position with Cambodia Angkor Air in 2014, serving as Captain of an Airbus A320. I have logged around 12,300 hours of flying throughout my career so far.

Q: What inspired you to become an airline pilot? A: My late father was a pilot. I have always admired him and I’ve always loved planes, with the desire to be a pilot since I was very young. It’s been a childhood dream of mine to take to the skies and fly a plane.

Q: What do you like most about the job? A: Aviation has been my passion not just a vocation. I love my job. Being a pilot means being responsible and gives me a wonderful sense of confidence. It’s a great feeling of satisfaction completing the flights safely together with my team. Taking passengers from one place to another requires profound attention, concentration and integrity. I also enjoy following the procedures, and I always do my best to make my passengers feel safe and happy during the flights. I’m a fan of technology too, and I like developing new skills. As a pilot, I learn something new every day. I’m always amazed how this industry is progressing.

Q: What challenges do you face? A: Indeed, there are many. We aim to complete all flights with the highest competancy. Passengers must feel safe and comfortable, which requires teamwork. The crew must complement each other and always be ready to help passengers and respond to their every need. It can be achallenge to be on time. As a pilot, we must be careful to always respect the flight schedule. You can be ahead of schedule, but you cannot be late. Also, as a pilot or crew member, we must never forget our company policies. It's important to be flexible. Flight schedules can change, and a pilot needs to change to meet the airline’s demands too. When off duty, I might have to stay overnight in any destination called for instead of my home, then be ready to go at a moment’s notice.

Q: What advice do you have for young aspiring pilots? A: As

I have already mentioned, being a pilot will remain a passion for many in future generations. I strongly recommend to be committed and persistent in your pursuit. Only with determination can you succeed? You must enjoy studying and constantly be pushing yourself, as well as maintaining a high standard of excellence.

Try to be an open-minded person and care for others, whether it be fellow crew members or passengers. Listen to advice and accept criticism. Always being on time and able to adapt to changing schedules, and be contactable at all times.

Q: What are the requirements to become an airline

pilot? A: As English is the de facto international language for civil aviation, you must have English proficiency of Level 4 or higher. This is a requirement of the International Civil Aviation Organization. You must graduate from a flying academy approved by aviation authorities, and you must pass a recent Aviation Medical Exam – Class 1 if you want to fly scheduled airliners. A university degree in mathematics and/or physics is also highly recommended.

Q: Can you tell us what a normal day for you? A: No

one-day is the same as another, even though schedules can all look alike. Technically speaking, a regular work day consists of double-checking and confirming the time schedule, performing flight checks and then flying time. Once I’ve finish my flight duties; I check in with the Flight Dispatch Office to see if there are any changes for the next day's flight. Finally, it’s time to clock off and relax, and recharge myself for the next day's flying.

Q: What career plans do you have for the future? A: Being a pilot is all I’ve always wanted to do. I hope I will be able to fly as long as possible. However, when the time comes, I would like to be a flight instructor or maybe a flight examiner. Either way, I’d like to help young pilots to follow their dreams and have careers in aviation. Today, I am a pilot proudly to serve our Kingdom and our national flag carrier. Cambodia Angkor Air is an excellent airline and the only member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) in Cambodia, as well as being an IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) certificate holder. I would like to take this opportunity to present my warmest gratitude to Cambodia Angkor Air, especially to Chairman H.E. Tekreth Samrach, Mr. Hoang Mánh Tuan and other colleagues. A special thanks and respect to H.E. Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia as well as the founder of Cambodia Angkor Air.

Shadow

Puppetry

A large shadow takes form on the surface of an immaculate white screen. It dances elegantly with controlled and precise movements, in perfect unison with the high-pitch, mesmerizing sounds of the orchestra. Soon the shadow is joined by others, engaging in a battle that will have them gliding gracefully from one side of the screen to the other. Behind them, a fire blazes fiercely, fueling the shadows' lives. We are in Siem Reap, witnessing a large shadow puppetry performance by the Wat Bo troupe, one of only a handful of such ensembles active in the country. Known as sbaek thom in Khmer, shadow puppetry is an ancient Cambodian art form that predates the Angkorean Empire. The Big Shadow Opera is listed as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity on November 25, 2005 by UNESCO. The stars of the show are the exquisitely intricate puppets, made of openwork leather and standing two metres tall. With their help, the artists tell spell-binding stories straight out of the Reamker – the Cambodian version of the ancient Indian epic poem Ramayana. “Sbaek plays a vital role in Cambodian society, showing people the way Cambodia used to be, and how much we’ve developed,” says Seng Song, associate country manager at Cambodian Living Arts, a local NGO that seeks to promote the Kingdom’s myriad of art forms. “Sbaek also helps us see Cambodia’s uniqueness. By noticing the similarities between the different puppet art forms in Asia, we come face to face with the true identity of our country.”

Believed to have originated in Siem Reap, performances of sbaek thom were considered sacred and could only take place three of four times a year, during special occasions such as Khmer New Year, the King’s birthday or the veneration of famous people. After the fall of the Angkor Empire, sbaek thom eventually transitioned into an art form. However, it never lost its ceremonial dimension, remaining a solemn affair, an act of worship. From Siem Reap, we travel to the capital, Phnom Penh, where another organisation, Sovanna Phum, is helping preserve and revive this centuries-old tradition by training children and young adults in its intricacies. Meak Khim is their artist coordinator. “Even to this day, people love sbaek thom because of the great songs, the enthralling stories and the nice music,” he says. Just as important as teaching the youngsters how to make the puppets dance with their own movements is teaching them how to make the puppets themselves, says Khim. At Sovanna Phum’s workshop, he walks us through the process. First, the hides are dyed with a solution made from the bark of the Kandaol tree. The artisan then draws the desired figure on the tanned hide, cuts it out and paints it before attaching it to two bamboo sticks, which the dancers use to control the puppet. Given the art’s historic sanctity, the production of certain puppets require special rituals. Crafting them is a meticulous process that can take up to 20 days. While cutting these characters, artists must wear white, abstain from alcohol and lead a sin-free life. Likewise, the leather must come

from an animal that hasn’t been killed, but rather has died of natural causes. The shows traditionally take place at night, usually outdoors beside a rice field or pagoda. A large white screen is placed between two tall bamboo pillars in front of a sizeable fire, although projectors are more commonly used as a light source nowadays. With smooth, controlled motions, the animators bring the puppets to life, their shadows cast up onto the canvas. The performance is accompanied by a traditional pinpeat orchestra and two narrators. The condensed version of the show – reserved for tourists, schools and international audiences – usually focuses on just one scene of the Reamker and lasts about an hour. The full tale is saved for formal ceremonies and takes four hours every day over a week-long period to perform. It can require up to 160 puppets. Back on the stage in Siem Reap, the Wat Bo troupe is nearing the end of their performance. Shadows disappear from the glowing screen and the fire behind slowly dies, leaving the performers wrapped in the dark mantle of night. Since the troupe started a collaboration with Cambodian Living Arts in 2000, they have travelled the world and showcased their craft in places like Malaysia and the United States. Still, they say home is where they love to perform the most. Grinning with satisfaction, they slowly make their way to the front of the stage, where the audience receive them with a thunderous applause.

The

Mystery

of the

Khmer Harp The Khmer harp went missing and has not been heard since the 14th century in Cambodia, it is estimated. That was until ethnomusicologist Patrick Kersalé found evidence of the ancient instrument during more than two decades of exploration in remote areas of South East Asia and India. To try and unravel the mystery of this instrument, he started a personal project to rebuild the Angkorian harp and restore the orchestras from the glorious past of the Khmer empire in agreement with the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts of Cambodia and UNESCO.

Several bas-reliefs can be found at Bayon Temple depicting feminine characters providing entertainment with dances at the royal palace, and male characters accompanying the Royal Triad as part of a procession all using the same type of harp-like instruments.

The harp played a central role in the religious and secular music throughout South East Asia during the reign of the ancient Angkorian empire that covered the borders of present-day Cambodia and also part of Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. However, this mysterious instrument had since disappeared and no copy had survived.

Kersalé set about reconstructing both the pre-Angkorian and Angkorian harp by studying dimensions of both the Burmese and Karen harps and scales given by some bas-reliefs. This information allowed him to finely craft both instruments. For the soundboard and the neck, he used the same wood species used in the traditional Khmer instrument as it was both easy to machine and recognized for its acoustic qualities.

Kersalé went in search of this legendary instrument exploring every corner of the Khmer temples by studying every bas-relief and each lapidary inscription to try to find more details. Kersalé has also already rebuilt all other known ancient Cambodian instruments. Kersalé found that the musical instruments represented in Khmer temples are of Indian heritage. Approximately 5,000 years ago, the harp existed during the Indus civilization, a period of trade with Mesopotamia. In texts 3,500 years ago, the Veda mentioned the word vina, a generic term for stringed instruments in ritual use. More recently, 2,500 years ago, Indian classical literature refers to it as an instrument of entertainment in the court. At that time kings, nobles, minor deities and courtesans were shown playing the harp solo to accompany singing or leading a dance. The harp remains sporadically in the iconography of the end of the first millennium, until it disappeared gradually from Southeast Asia. In Cambodia, the first representation of the harp was visible on two lintels from the 7th century. They may have come from Sambor Prei Kuk, an archaeological site located near the town of Kompong Thom. Although the iconography was rare, the stone inscriptions gave Kersalé some additional information in that harpists were generally female, and the existence of an ivory harp and others made from copper alloy and silver. Kersalé noted that the evidence was paradoxical, “In the 9th century we just had text referring to the instrument and no iconography. In the 12th century the text disappeared and only iconography was visible”.

Harps were found to be made of leather and thus tests were performed with various types of skin, such as snake, goat, and cow. Snakeskin proved to be the most robust and wide enough to use in the manufacture of traditional Khmer instruments, such as fiddles and drums. For the pre-Angkorian harp, Kersalé tied the skin as was the case with two types of harps remaining in India. For the Angkorian harp, he nailed the skin in a similar way to the Burmese harp. The Angkorian harp handles were slightly arched and their ends have different styles depending on the era and context. Some end with a plan cut, others are finished with the head of the Garuda. Regarding the pre-Angkorian harp a Cham representation was chosen, with a butt-shaped handle end, which perhaps originated in India. Silk strings were added to complete the construction. The sound of the harp is melodic and ethereal. Kersalé noted that it was used during rituals as part of an orchestra playing offerings to deities and for dances within the temple sanctuaries. Since its reconstruction, the harp has been taught to aspiring young musicians by some of the last living masters. Cambodian Living Arts, a non-profit organization dedicated to Cambodian traditional art forms is supporting these artists and young musicians to make a living by offering study scholarships and regular performances. Hai Nan Island Teeming with unspoilt, luxuriant nature, Hainan Island stays true to its natural and ethnic roots with unexpected charms.

Here’s why you should visit Hainan, an idyllic but oft-overlooked vacation spot, for a short, quiet getaway.

Thinking tropical island resorts and the usual suspects float into your headspace — Bali, the Philippines, Tioman Island, Langkawi, Australia, Hawaii. Along the same, beachy vein lies Hainan Island that’d probably never skip through your mind, especially not when the thought of it being a part of China alone might be off-putting for some.

But unlike the China many may perceive, Hainan is actually separate from the mainland, resulting in its own unique appeal, dotted with forests, beaches, sleepy towns and restful resorts. It’s not hard to understand why people call this little island China’s answer to Hawaii!

ATR SAFETY

យន្តហោះប្រភទ េ ATR 72 រចនា ATR 72: DESIGNED WITH SAFETY IN MIND ឡើងដោយផ្តត ោ លើសវុ ត្ថភា ិ ពខ្ពស់ Cambodia Angkor Air is proud to count the ATR 72 among its airliners. This prestigious aircraft is a twin-engine turboprop short-haul airliner built by the French-Italian manufacturer ATR. The ATR 72 is widely recognised as the most cost-effective regional aircraft, a reputation that has made it the preferred choice for short-haul flights. The craft’s innovative design introduces a range of improvements that have dramatically improved the passenger experience. The airliner’s revolutionary design minimises noise within the cabin, thanks to the installation of dynamic vibration absorbers and the use of advanced, soundproof materials. This makes for a silent and serene environment, maximising customer satisfaction. The innovations introduced by the design of the ATR 72 are not limited to passenger comfort. Powered by PW127 engines, the ATR 72 provides outstanding short-field landing performance, particularly for an aircraft of its size. With regards to safety, the ATR 72-500 has been suitably modified to better handle icing, and has a clean safety record. To deal with control surface jams, the ATR 72 has a provision to disconnect the otherwise linked elevator, allowing for the captain or the first officer to have full authority over their respective, independent elevators. With the inclusion of the revolutionary ATR 72, Cambodia Angkor Air offers its customers one of the best flying experiences of any airliner in the region. Clients can enjoy the aircraft on Phnom Penh-Siem Reap, Siem Reap-Sihanoukville and Phnom Penh-Ho Chi Minh City routes, and more to come. Always giving maximum priority to safety, Cambodia Angkor Air continues to invest in new aircrafts that adhere to all international safety requirements.
