Welcome on board your Cambodia Angkor Air flight. Make yourself comfortable, and enjoy the latest issue (January-February 2021) of our inflight magazine, Angkor. In each issue we bring you articles and information about the Kingdom of Wonder, and the amazing destinations we fly to. Despite its official designation as Cambodia’s second largest city, the provincial capital of Battambang has a remarkably placid and pleasant feel. With a fine array of historic and cultural attractions, a thriving arts community and picturesque surroundings, it’s fast emerging as an authentic tourist highlight. Silk Island, not very far from the center of Phnom Penh but a world away from the hustle and bustle of Cambodia’s capital, it can get all too much sometimes, but thankfully some rural respite is just a short ride away. Lovers of nature will take solace in the luscious sanctuary that is Phnom Tamao Zoological Park and Wildlife Rescue Centre, which helps to protect and conserve around 102 species of mammals, birds and reptiles as well as many rare trees and plants. Don't miss this unique experience. It's that time of year again. Red and yellow dragon and lion performers slowly dance along the street, hovering outside businesses to ward away evil and shower them with prosperity for the year ahead. The ring of “Gong Xi Fa Cai” (Happy New Year) sounds through the air alongside beating drums, cymbals and gongs. This is a familiar sight across Cambodia during Chinese New Year. Over to China. Nanning is the capital and largest city by population of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in Southern China. It is known as the "Green City" because of its abundance of lush subtropical foliage. Located in the South of Guangxi, Nanning is surrounded by a hilly basin, with a warm, monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate. In this issues Q&A we talk to a young photographer and YouTuber Chheng Sopheak, born as a refugee then relocated to Cambodia in 1993. He co-founded Cambodia’s first co-working space SmallWorld. He also founded One Memory Studio. His passion is to teach and help young hopefuls follow in his footsteps. Tucked away in the top right hand corner of Cambodia, with Laos to the north and Vietnam to the east, Ratanakiri province is one of the most far-flung destinations that Cambodia has to offer. Nevertheless, it rewards travellers willing to go that extra distance with a rural charm, which is at once quintessentially Cambodian and entirely unique. In Takeo province, merely 42 kilometres south of Phnom Penh, sits a place of picturesque appeal and sacred aura. Phnom Chiso ('Phnom' meaning 'mountain' in Khmer) stands just 130 metres tall, but its green, lush beauty will captivate you at first sight. After all this exploring, hungry? Plea, This well-known spicy, sour salad dish, will wake up your taste buds with its freshness and tang. Whether in the most humble food street stall or the most refined restaurant. So sit back, relax, and let the world fly by as you enjoy your flight with Cambodia Angkor Air. The Editorial Team

weather
what’s the weather like in Cambodia in jan'-feb'? In the coastal regions, the average temperature in January hovers around 26°C, while the mountains are a little cooler with averages of 20°C. In Phnom Penh, Cambodia's capital, temperatures reach a high of 32°C at this time of year with lows of 20°C. Cambodia is the perfect holiday destination if you love relaxing on the beach, exploring historic sites or hiking through the mountains. In January the country is warm, sunny and dry, making this one of the most popular times of the year to visit. Although the heat is pleasant and bearable in January, you’ll still need to wear high factor sun cream and seek shade in the peak of the day.

battambang
an authentic cambodian experience Despite its official designation as Cambodia’s second largest city, the provincial capital of Battambang has a remarkably placid and pleasant feel. With a fine array of historic and cultural attractions, a thriving arts community and picturesque surroundings, it’s fast emerging as an authentic tourist highlight. The city derives its name from an ancient Khmer legend in which a cowherd finds a powerful magic stick and overthrows the King, only to lose the stick and subsequently cede the throne. “Dambang” is a stick in Khmer language and “Bat” means “lose”. A huge, black painted statue of ‘ Lok Ta Dambang Kra Nhoung’ and his magic stick forms a prominent city landmark on a central roundabout. The Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts and Ministry of Tourism have pushed an initiative and requested to put some sites into the UNESCO World Heritage List as those places have some architectural buildings left from colonisation era. More than 800 well-preserved colonial buildings, mainly close to the city’s Sangke river. Examples include the European-style Governor’s Residence and the Art Deco-style Central Market (“Phsar Nat”). Alternatively, a cluster of 100-year-old Khmer wooden houses can be found out at Wat Kor village. Battambang is also known by Cambodian people through a number of songs in the 1960s and 1970s in which famous singers performed and described almost all the historic tourist attractions. People want to visit those places after listening to lively words written in those songs. Leading the way in establishing Battambang’s reputation as the art hub of Cambodia is Phare Ponleu Selpak, a non-profit arts school supporting local youths and communities through artistic, educational and social programmes. The school hosts live circus-style performances, currently every Saturday at 7pm. Please be aware at the moment the school is temporarily closed due to Covid-19. Art galleries are scattered around town showcasing the considerable talents of local artists. Battambang Museum is also highly recommended, featuring a collection of pre - and post - Angkorian era relics and artefacts. Head 12km out of town to discover an important religious site, a stunning 100-metre-high (approximately) limestone mountain called Phnom Sampov. Ascend the summit by road or via a demanding climb, affording breathtaking views, if you have any breath left, as well as a Buddhist temple, shrines and statues. The mountain is riddled with caves, some home to truly massive colonies of bats which pour out at dusk, creating a popular tourist spectacle.

The “Bamboo Train Lorry is another classic Battambang experience. This improvised rail vehicle, merely a bamboo flatbed perched on wheel axles and powered by a small engine, can reach a maximum speed of 30 km/h. However, as you are travelling along a single track, you may have to disassemble and reassemble the train when encountering another coming in the opposite direction. This proves a fun way to break up your leisurely viewing of the glorious countryside. With the original track suffering from wear and tear, a new bamboo train ride has been built next to Phnom Banan, although improved comfort and safety somewhat take away from the authenticity. Banan also has an ancient hilltop temple, with design elements similar to Angkor Wat. Wat Ek Phnom is another 11th Century temple complex well worth a day trip, with intricate stone carvings and ruins to scramble over like a Tomb Raider. Look out for villagers on the way handcrafting the likes of rice paper for spring rolls, rice noodles and sticky rice in bamboo.

The hustle and bustle of Cambodia’s capital Phnom Penh can get all too much sometimes, but thankfully some rural respite is just a short ride away.
Known locally as Koh Dach, Silk Island is 30-square-kilometer stretch of languid farmland completely surrounded by the Mekong river. Numerous tour operators offer day trips to the island, usually by tuk-tuk or car via a ferry crossing. You can also charter your own transport, heading northeast out of town over the Cambodia-Japan Friendship bridge and along National Highway 6 to the ferry port. The ferry each way costs 500 riel per person on foot. Bicycle is 200 riel + 500 Riel per adult. Moto Bike 500 Riel for bike + 500 Riel per adult. Tuk Tuk 3,000 Riel + 500 Riel per passenger (adult). Car 6,000 Riel including passengers. 12 seater Van is 10,000 Riel + 500 Riel per passenger (adult). Silk Island draws its name from its numerous silk weaving communities, with the time-treasured craft in Cambodia dating back as far as the pre-Angkorian era. Visitors to the silk weaving centre, located close to the ferry landing, can learn about the whole process, from silk worms bulking up on mulberry leaves and their golden cocoons getting harvesting, to yarns spun and dyed a variety of vibrant colours before finally being ready for weaving.

Up in stilted wooden huts, highly-skilled weavers create the sublimely soft fabrics using handmade wooden looms. The final products such as traditional silk scarves and skirts are on display and available for purchase. You can also opt for a guided tour of the centre, and grab a relaxing drink or snack in a hut perched on the banks of the Mekong. Take a dip in the river for a cooling swim too. There are other silk weaving villages to check out and buy products, but be prepared to haggle hard for a bargain. The island is perfect place for a bicycle ride, with verdant fields, quiet roads and Buddhist pagodas dotted all over. Basic bikes can be rented for just a few dollars a day at the ferry landing, or you can hire mountain bikes in town and either ride there or sling them in a tuk-tuk. Make sure to slap on sunscreen and keep hydrated with drinks and salty snacks from roadside stalls. Should the island’s tranquility and charm really rub off on you, why not book an overnight stay. Accommodation ranges from humble home stays and cheap guest houses to boutique hotels with private swimming pools. There’s even a beach resort at the northern tip, although it’s most popular with rowdy locals looking for some fun on and in the river.

go wild at Lovers of nature will take solace in the luscious sanctuary that is Phnom Tamao Zoological Park and Wildlife Rescue Centre, which helps to protect and conserve around 102 species of mammals, birds and reptiles as well as many rare trees and plants. Cambodian wildlife can be hard to spot, with most confined to the more remote areas of the country. The centre provides the ideal opportunity to glimpse the region’s most iconic creatures in their natural habitat. Covered in deciduous forest, the 2,285-hectare site is located roughly 40km south of Phnom Penh along National Highway 2. Visitors can see a wide variety of animals – over 1,200 in total including critically endangered and vulnerable species – the majority of which have been rescued from the illegal wildlife trade. Elephants, tigers, lions, leopards, bears, deer, monkeys, crocodiles, pythons and more are on display, and there’s also a huge bird enclosure with storks, herons and pelicans. As Cambodia’s largest zoo, it has remained a popular tourist destination since its establishment by the Cambodian Forestry Administration in 1995. Day-to-day operations are conducted through a partnership with Wildlife Alliance, and specific species are cared for by charity organisations Free the Bears, Fauna & Flora International and Conservation International. Animals rescued from poachers, abusive owners and private zoos receive expert rehabilitation from the well-trained keepers, with sustainable breeding programmes leading to release back into the wild wherever possible. The centre is home to the world’s largest captive collection of Malayan sun bears. Look out for globally-threatened species such as pileated gibbons, smooth-coated otters and Siamese crocodiles too.

Sundays are good days to visit as keepers perform informative demonstrations with elephants, lions and crocodiles. One of Phnom Tamao’s most famous residents is Lucky the Asian elephant. Don’t miss her football and dancing skills, and if you are really fortunate she might even paint a T-shirt for you! Daily opening times are 8am to 4:30pm, and it is recommended to go early when the animals are most active and temperatures generally cooler. Entry fees are $5 for adults and $2 for kids (foreigner prices), and English-speaking guides can be booked from around $15. You can book day or night tour package with Wildlife Alliance including transportation from Phnom Penh, Cambodian meals, behind-the-scenes access to wildlife enclosures and talks with keepers. Free The Bears also offer a ‘Bear Care Tour’, allowing you to help out with their daily bear necessities.

Red and yellow dragon and lion performers slowly dance along the street, hovering outside businesses to ward away evil and shower them with prosperity for the year ahead. The ring of “Gong Xi Fa Cai (Happy New Year) sounds through the air alongside beating drums, cymbals and gongs. This is a familiar sight across Cambodia during Chinese New Year.

While Chinese New Year – also called Lunar New Year – is not an official public holiday in Cambodia, it’s a special occasion that is increasingly being marked across the country. Following the ancient Chinese Lunar Calendar, this year on February 12 we welcome in the year of the Ox. Festivities are steeped in tradition and their origins hail from the mythical beast Nian. Once a year, the monster was said to have emerged from the bottom of the ocean to feast on livestock, crops and its favourite delicacy, villagers’ children. To appease Nian, townsfolk laid food at their doors as the New Year approached, but he continued to return. However, one year villagers were surprised when the monster fled from a curious child dressed in bright red pyjamas. The next year, red lanterns were hung on villagers’ doors and spring scrolls on windows across the village to scare the beast away. Nian was never seen again and the tradition carries on annually, forming an integral part of New Year rituals. Cambodians have been celebrating Lunar New Year ever year because Chinese have been immigrating to Cambodia for more than 1,000 years, the vast majority of Khmer-Chinese settled between 1910 and 1950, as their own nation waged war and revolution.

On the night of New Year’s Eve, people flock to pagodas to make offerings. These are believed to wash away the previous year’s bad luck and bring good fortune in the next. coastal getaways
Cambodia's coastline offers scenic and charming getaways for tourists, locals and expats. Despite the constant and rapid evolution of the fast-developing Southeast Asian nation, destination towns such as Kampot and Kep are foodies favourites, while the jungle sprawl and mountainous Koh Kong entice adventurers. The islands off the southern coast (basking in the Gulf of Thailand) remain an attractive relaxing option, although there are plenty of adrenaline activities to keep everyone entertained.

Kep is a quaint and quiet seaside town, often viewed as the little cousin of
Koh Kong Province, lying in the south-west of Cambodia, used to be more

ratanakiri Tucked away in the top right hand corner of Cambodia, with Laos to the north and Vietnam to the east, Ratanakiri province is one of the most far-flung destinations that Cambodia has to offer. Nevertheless, it rewards travellers willing to go that extra distance with a rural charm, which is at once quintessentially Cambodian and entirely unique.

The province is noted for its spectacular waterfalls, diverse wildlife and native tribes. Although it covers over 10,000 square kilometres, Ratanakiri is home to only 184,000 people, most of whom are part of the cluster of minority groups known as the Khmer Leu (Upper Khmer) people. Many people in the province have an entirely different language and culture from the majority of Cambodia’s population. Although sparsely inhabited, Ratanakiri is teeming with life: the province holds some of the most biologically diverse lowland tropical rainforests in mainland Southeast Asia.
Local Handicraft in Ratanakiri These dense swathes of canopy cover a menagerie of wildlife, ranging from the magnificent Asian elephants, Sun bears, and tigers, to the delicate Apple Snail and the shy Malayan porcupine. Many of these creatures are easily accessible at Lumphat Wildlife Sanctuary. The rangers at Phnom Prik national park are happy to facilitate tours and elephant rides for visitors. One of Ratanakiri’s most famous sights – its rust-red earth – will be visible on entering the province. As many roads are still unpaved, a journey into Ratanakiri’s heartlands will be along these red ribbons of earth: slick orange clay in the rainy season that emit clouds of face-staining dust in the hot season.

chiso
In Takeo province, merely 42 kilometres south of Phnom Penh, sits a place of picturesque appeal and sacred aura. Phnom Chiso ('Phnom' meaning 'mountain' in Khmer) stands just 130 metres tall, but its green, lush beauty will captivate you at first sight. On top of it, lies the jewel in the crown, an ancient Khmer temple known as Phnom Chiso (often spelled “Phnom Chisor”), and made famous by its dilapidated allure, with dense vegetation slowly encroaching upon its walls. Phnom Chiso Temple was built in the 11th century by Suryavarman I, a practitioner of Brahmanism who dedicated the structure to the Hindu divinities of Shiva and Vishnu. Its walls are made out of laterite, bricks and sandstone. The temple brandishes some impressive carvings on lintels and pillars which depict the Hindu pantheon. Tradition has it that one should climb the mountain using the stairs on the West side of the mountain - exactly 180 steps -, and descend through the South side, which consists of 408 steps. This last set of stairs links Phnom Chiso with other remarkable temples in the area and to the temple’s baray (a man-made lake common in ancient Khmer worshipping sites). A nearby rocky field was once the site of several other temples, but only parts of these remain standing. Phnom Chiso is very popular with visitors, particularly during festivals. On these special occasions, people flock to the temple’s pagoda, which was built in 1917. A brief escapade from the hustle and bustle of the capital will suffice to reach this beautiful mountain and crowning temple. Atop the mountain, with the peace that naturally reigns in places of worship, you will be treated to one of the best views of Takeo province: vivid rice fields that stretch out as far as the eye can see.

ATR SAFETY
យន្តហោះប្រភទ េ ATR 72 រចនា ATR 72: DESIGNED WITH SAFETY IN MIND ឡើងដោយផ្តត ោ លើសវុ ត្ថភា ិ ពខ្ពស់ Cambodia Angkor Air is proud to count the ATR 72 among its airliners. This prestigious aircraft is a twin-engine turboprop short-haul airliner built by the French-Italian manufacturer ATR. The ATR 72 is widely recognised as the most cost-effective regional aircraft, a reputation that has made it the preferred choice for short-haul flights. The craft’s innovative design introduces a range of improvements that have dramatically improved the passenger experience. The airliner’s revolutionary design minimises noise within the cabin, thanks to the installation of dynamic vibration absorbers and the use of advanced, soundproof materials. This makes for a silent and serene environment, maximising customer satisfaction. The innovations introduced by the design of the ATR 72 are not limited to passenger comfort. Powered by PW127 engines, the ATR 72 provides outstanding short-field landing performance, particularly for an aircraft of its size. With regards to safety, the ATR 72-500 has been suitably modified to better handle icing, and has a clean safety record. To deal with control surface jams, the ATR 72 has a provision to disconnect the otherwise linked elevator, allowing for the captain or the first officer to have full authority over their respective, independent elevators. With the inclusion of the revolutionary ATR 72, Cambodia Angkor Air offers its customers one of the best flying experiences of any airliner in the region. Clients can enjoy the aircraft on Phnom Penh-Siem Reap, Siem Reap-Sihanoukville and Phnom Penh-Ho Chi Minh City routes, and more to come. Always giving maximum priority to safety, Cambodia Angkor Air continues to invest in new aircrafts that adhere to all international safety requirements.
