PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE AT sP+A, MUMBAI
SYMBIOTIC ANIMOSITY EXPERIENCIAL DESIGN
Symbiotic [Program]- Involving interaction between two different organisms living in close physical associations Animosity [Massing/Form]- Strong hostility
Located towards the west of Navy Yard, a desolate Con Edison power station is being replaced by a community waste to energy incinerator along with 60,000 sq. ft. recycling facility and surprisingly a natatorium. This emergent concept of deploying two contrasting programs is termed ‘symbiotic animosity’ that translates to forcing opposite entities to work together where the resultant is a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. The need for this unique concept arose because- “The stigma and concern around a Waste to Energy incinerator required a strong programmatic counter (public pool) that would benefit the public at large and should help in acceptance of the overall project within the community.” WTE incinerator is an appropriate alternative to the rising environmental concerns of the landfill and economic costs of transportation of waste to these sites. The 700 Ton capacity incinerator generates 80 MW power that is supplied to the city grid in addition to the energy consumed by the natatorium program. The landscaped plaza and flea market also allows for the social sustainability of the site by acting as an economic catalyst for the region.

Computing various complex cellular structures found in nature and selecting distinctive layers based on their logic for practical applicability and aesthetic appeal to develop them further. The host structure was a major parameter in the computational model and since the cellular network cannot independently replicate the social and cultural concerns, humans controls were introduced to create a hybridized model. Distributing number of points along the dynamic surface based on earlier computation and logic where these points eventually became the centers of Moroni cells deployed on the surface. The resultant structure, even though static, is flexible in terms of its adaptability as it mirrors the growth pattern found in plant species and therefore produces previously unimaginable spaces and allows for control of unmanageable functions.

Considering bioinspiration as a concept that emphasizes “indirect and multiplicious characteristics of knowledge transfer between biology to architecture. Therefore, contending that it is not sufficient to mimic natural forms in a structure but strategically reinterpret the natural principles in design. The application of morphogenetic model resulted in a complex and dynamic form. This increases the flexibility and adaptability of the structure as they have vast information contained in their form which might seem random but incorporates meaning within them. The complexity of the end product also produces aesthetically and visually resolved form, which would not have been possible with a preconceived logic Experimentation provides enormous advantage as it can be scrutinized for environmental responsiveness and energy analysis.
