Project: Metamorphosis
Class: Design Studio V
Semester: S1 2021
This project is a vertical expression of how fleeting our lives are and yet how lasting our impacts can be. Through housing cloths such as silkworms, spiders, moss and mushrooms to extract their healing qualities, we can leave a lasting impact of a different kind on this planet, one of rejuvenation.
The building allows a burial process that is carbon negative and biodiverse encouraging. Coffins are grown out of mushroom mycelium with a bed of moss to break down first and neutralize soils, after this the clothing custom made for each body out of silkworm silk and spider silk are embedded with endangered seeds particular to the area in which the body is to be buried. The result is a body that doesn't release carbon and over 100 toxins into the soil as they usually do, but one that can give life back to any soil or dirt in which it is placed and encourage life that existed before our negative impacts.
