Manheim Creates Joint Venture With Drivetime Forms Go Auto Exchange, LLC - A New Wholesale Auction Company Focused On Low-End Vehicle Segment, Serving Independent Dealers
ATLANTA, GA – Manheim announced the creation of Go Auto Exchange, LLC a new joint venture with DriveTime, the nation’s largest subprime credit used car dealer. This partnership creates a separate, independent wholesale auction company focused on independent dealers and the low-end vehicle segment. Go Auto Exchange will establish locations this year in Atlanta, Ga. and Phoenix, Ariz., and plans to expand to other key markets in 2014. Tim Janego will serve as President of Go Auto Exchange. CarMark Certified Selects NAC To Administer CPO Program
CARY, N.C. — CarMark Certified, a warranty program that provides Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) warranties to all vehicle brands, based in Cary, N.C., will be administered nationally by NAC (National Auto Care) of Westerville, Ohio, beginning Jan. 1, 2014. The partnership was announced jointly by the two companies. The CarMark Certified brand is owned by POADA LLC and was launched in 2010 as a complement to manufacturer-based CPO programs. It currently is offered by dealers in 14 states. The CarMark Certified limited warranty provides either a 12/ month-12,000-mile warranty from sale date or a 72-month/100,000mile warranty from in-service date. CarMark Certified appeals to franchise dealers as a way of providing a CPO product on nonmanufacturer-affiliated vehicles in inventory and to independent dealers as a way to offer CPO vehicles for retail. “We are very pleased to begin a new relationship with NAC, one of

Polaris Expands Beyond Vehicles With New Product Line By A Dealer’s Journal Staff
Polaris was awarded a contract to provide ultra-light tactile vehicles to the German army. In addition to its ongoing growth in the defense industry, Polaris also re-launched the Indian motorcycle brand and launched a line of commercial utility vehicles that it developed in partnership with Bobcat. Polaris reported a recordbreaking third quarter, having surpassed $1 billion in quarterly revenue. CEO and Chairman Scott Wine attributed the significant growth to ongoing demand and the introduction of new products, such as the Indian re-launch and new variations of the company’s Rangers, RZRs, and Victory motorcycles.
Polaris Industries, Inc., long known for its snowmobiles and ATVs, is once again expanding its product offerings this time by adding a line of power generators for outdoor enthusiasts. The Medina-based company which manufactures and sells snowmobiles, off-road recreational vehicles (including ATVs and side-by-side vehicles), and on-road vehicles (including motorcycles and small electric vehicles) said it aims to attract powersports, hunting, fishing, and camping customers with its Polaris Power line. The new line currently consists of three inverter generators, or portable power supplies. The generators the P1000i, the P2000i, and the P3000i produce 1,000, 2,000, and 3,000 watts of maximum AC output, respectively. Po-
laris spokeswoman Donna Beadle told us that the Polaris Power line is the result of the company exploring “adjacent markets” that would support its existing product offerings. “Generators were a perfect match to our current customers’ needs and also opens opportunities to capture new consumers that use these products,” she said. The line was announced to Polaris dealers and the generators are available at select stores that carry Polaris products. With the introduction of its new line, Polaris continues a series of recent product launches and acquisitions. Last month, the company purchased St. Paulbased military navigation software company Primordial, Inc., reportedly gaining approximately $2 million in annual revenue through the acquisition. Fisker Automotive Inc.’s plan to sell its assets to Hybrid Tech Group LLC, a company owned by one of the hybrid car maker’s original investors, leaves little recovery for most creditors and seeks to skirt the normal bankruptcy-auction process. The proposed sale also leaves open the question of what will happen to the former General Motors Co plant in Delaware that Fisker purchased in 2010. The plant, which was to make a plugin hybrid car, may go with the new company or be sold to another company, with the proceeds going to Hong Kong businessman Richard Li’s Hybrid Tech, Fisker disclosed in documents filed with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Wilmington, Del. Fisker, based in Anaheim, Calif., is scheduled to lay out its plans in bankruptcy court Tuesday to sell most of its assets to Hybrid Tech, which purchased Fisker’s defaulted U.S. Department of Energy loan at an auction in October for $25 million. Fisker drew down $192 million on the $529 million government loan before it was frozen in 2012 after the auto maker failed to hit development milestones on the new plugin car. By the time of the auction in October, Fisker owed $168.5 million on the loan, according to court papers. Fisker, which filed for Chapter 11 protection Friday, is seeking court approval to skip the usual bankruptcy auction process that would invite rival bids, saying it would be a waste of time and money due to the extensive mar16 - A Dealer’s Journal - December 2013
keting process that began more than a year before the bankruptcy filing. Given Hybrid’s “material advantage in any prospective sale process” as holder of $168.5 million in top-ranking secured loans that would have to be paid off by any rival bidder, there is no point in going through the usual Chapter 11 competitive sale process, attorneys for Fisker wrote in court
papers. The company is seeking a Jan. 3, 2014, bankruptcy court hearing to approve the sale and warns that Hybrid Tech could pull out of the deal if there is no signed sale order by Jan. 6. Little is known about Hybrid Tech except that it’s owned by Mr. Li, one of the original investors in Fisker, U.S. government officials said. The bankruptcy documents don’t name Mr. Li but say that the purchaser “is an affiliate of one of the Debtors’ non-affiliate equity holders that has appointed a director to the Debtors’ board
of directors.” Privately held Fisker is currently “owned by a diverse group of venture capital, private equity, and sovereign-wealth funds, as well as private individuals,” according to court papers. It is being managed by Chief Restructuring Officer Marc Beilinson. Caroline Langdale, a spokeswoman for Hybrid Tech, declined to comment on the proposed sale. Fisker became a symbol of the conflict between the Obama administration and some Republican lawmakers critical of taxpayer-
funded investments in battery and electric-vehicle companies. Other companies that received loans from the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing program include Ford Motor Co., Nissan Motor Co., Tesla Motors and Vehicle Production Group, a maker of natural gas-fueled, wheelchairaccessible vans. VPG’s $50 million loan also defaulted when the company went under, and the DOE sold its loan for $3 million.
