Developer answers South River Street hotel worries By Ted Remsnyder Columbia-Greene Media

COXSACKIE — Real estate developer Aaron Flach appeared at a Village of Coxsackie Planning Board meeting on Thursday night to address residents’ concerns about the South River Street Redevelopment project that could transform the village’s downtown waterfront district. Currently under construction, the project consists of the four-story James Newbury Hotel and the Wire Events Center, a 600-capacity space that will host weddings and special events. During the March 17 meeting, Flach told the crowd that an upcoming planned outdoor event on May 14 that would have gathered as many as 5,000 guests at the waterfront site would not be taking place for the time being. “I want to apologize because I feel like people have heard a lot of different things and I want to straighten it out,” Flach said during the meeting. “We were approached by our hospitality group to host an event for a company in our backyard, not the building, which would be more than 600 people. That being said, they

COXSACKIE — Two men from the Capital Region were taken to the Greene County Jail after they were arrested on charges that they allegedly stole more than $50,000 worth of supplies, including copper and aluminum, from a work site in Coxsackie, Steven Nevel, public information officer for state police Troop F, said Friday. Keith Douglas, 31, of Schenectady, and Desmond Morgan, 29, of Albany, were taken into custody Wednesday at the Albany County Probation Department at 10 N. Russell Road in Albany following an investigation that began Jan. 24, Nevel said. The two men are accused of

NY changes rule on ‘just-in-case’ absentee ballots By Natasha Vaughn-Holdridge HUDSON — A new state law will change the way absentee voting works in New York state. Local board of election officials are encouraging voters to learn and understand the revisions to absentee voting before they apply to vote through absentees. The changes take effect immediately, in time for the June primary election cycle. Under the new law, a voter who applies for an absentee ballot can vote only with the absentee ballot or an affidavit ballot. They will not be

allowed to cast ballots by machine voting. “The law has changed,” Columbia County Democratic Elections Commissioner Ken Dow said Friday. “So now once a person has requested an absentee ballot, not even if they sent it in, just if they sent in an application for an absentee ballot, then they are no longer allowed to vote on the machine.” Under the new law, anyone who submits an application to receive an absentee ballot may not cast a ballot on the voting machine either at early voting or on Election Day. A voter who submits an application

So a significant number of people request absentee ballots and then don’t use them.” Historically, a voter would have the ability to ask for an absentee ballot and then if See BALLOTS A8 COLUMBIA-GREENE MEDIA
