NEW LEBANON — The cause of a house fire Monday in New Lebanon is under investigation, authorities said. At about 7:02 a.m., the four fire companies that comprise the Lebanon Valley Task Force were sent by Columbia County 911 to

563 county Route 34, after receiving multiple reports of a fire at that location. State police arrived on the scene first and reported everyone inside the house was able to get out safely. When the first firefighters arrived, they confirmed the two-story home was engulfed in flames and requested mutual-aid

NIVERVILLE — The woman whose car was struck by a train March 29 in Niverville was arrested Friday in connection with the incident, state police said Monday. Margaret M. Drexler, 66, of Niverville, was charged with third-degree criminal trespass, a class B misdemeanor, according to state police records. An investigation into the crash indicated that Drexler entered the train tracks from the parking lot of the Niverville Pub, parked alongside the tracks and left the car to search for a missing dog, said Beau Duffy, director of information for state police. At about 5:35 a.m., Columbia County 911 sent Niverville Fire Company and Valatie Rescue Squad to the railroad crossing on Parker Hall Road in the area of Elm Street after receiving a call from a CSX freight train, saying they had just struck a car. The caller reported that there were people standing around the vehicle. The train stopped in the area following the crash. State police arrived on the scene first and said there were no

assistance from neighboring fire departments. Companies from two counties responded. All available manpower was requested to the scene. See FIRE A8

Jeep crashes into store, damage heavy By Bill Williams Columbia-Greene Media

VALATIE — A Columbia County man has been charged with driving while intoxicated following a crash early Saturday morning when his Jeep crashed into a building. Steven T. Wolfe, 28, of Valatie, was arrested following the early morning crash, state police spokeswoman Marissa Debiase said. Wolfe was taken to Albany Medical Center for evaluation after the accident, Debiase said. The building that Wolfe crashed into houses Beaver Mill Antiques on the first floor and apartments on the second floor. The building sustained heavy damage, but it could have been worse, Valatie Fire Chief Joe Loeffler said.

An investigation determined that Wolfe was driving east on Main Street when he lost control and crashed into the business, Debiase said. At about 12:44 a.m., Columbia County 911 sent Valatie Fire Department and Valatie Rescue Squad to 3045 Main St., after receiving reports that a car had crashed into a building and that the driver was unconscious. Paramedics treated the man at the scene before bringing him to Albany. The village code enforcement officer was requested to the scene by fire officials. Main Street was closed to traffic between Chatham Street and New Street while emergency crews worked. Some residents who heard the crash watched from a distance as the crews worked on the site.

The residents of the apartment did not have to evacuate, Loeffler said. Repairs to the second floor were scheduled to be done on Saturday, Loeffler said. The antique store will remain closed until repairs can be made, Loeffler said. One of the walls that was damaged had electric wires in it and they will need to be repaired. The front of the building also needs to be shored up, Loeffler said. The building located next door to the crash at 3043 Main St., sustained minor damage, fire officials said. That building housed Great Finds on the first floor and apartments on the second floor. The Jeep was towed from See JEEP A8
