Art and science Science = art. They are the same thing. Both science and art are human attempts to understand and describe the world around us. The subjects and methods have different traditions, and the intended audiences are different, but the motivations and goals are fundamentally the same.

Performance by Dr Raymond Khong

“the Singing Dentist”

Dinner Speaker

A musical life Professor Michael Woods Michael Woods has led a very busy clinical academic life, extending for more than 30 years. For much of that time, he has also been involved in various musical pursuits in Australia and abroad. Looking back, it is obvious that these two parts of his life have provided opportunities, and actually opened doors, for each-other. Michael will recount his experiences as a journeyman conductor - including, of course, the career highlights, but also the travel involved, the necessary preparatory work, the tight schedules, negotiations with producers and artistic directors, and the interaction between our traditionally-conservative dental profession and the often publicity-driven world of concert direction and promotion. This meeting is taking place in the Arts Centre, Melbourne, where, in 1991, he was first engaged to conduct the Australian Pops Orchestra.

Raymond’s passion outside of dentistry is music - or more precisely, singing. Raymond is a trained operatic tenor and has sung with the Australian Opera, the Victoria State Opera and various local opera companies.
