Welcome to this year’s fourth online edition of GippsGuide, the Latrobe Valley and midGippsland’s local guide to analogue and digital TV, as well as community notices and local classifieds. This print edition also contains cartoons, light entertainment, trivia and horoscopes. For those that are unaware, the GippsGuide newsletter is part of GippsGuide.com.au, which includes a business directory and extended listings. GippsGuide is growing fast, particularly our free classifieds/community notices and I hope all repeat readers who had GippsGuide home delivered enjoyed the convenience. If you’d like to find out more about us have a look at the website- you can see there that I’m a lawyer by training and find information about our IT support and distribution. Why am I mentioning this, you may ask. Well, while GippsGuide is a (relatively) small local publication, you can be assured we’re not fly-by-nighters- we’re in it for the long haul. To this end, as an introduction for new local businesses we’re offering free advertising for one week, and the only catch is you may or may not have to answer a phone call asking if it was successful! Contact us ASAP to get on board.

Unfortunately, last week a distribution error meant that home delivery to some parts of Mirboo North was interrupted, however around a dozen businesses there plus many more in Morwell agreed to stock GippsGuide for public access (see page 2 for list), in addition to home delivery of 1800. The distribution issue has now been fixed. Of course, if anyone would like a copy who doesn’t have one, just contact us and we’ll be happy to send one. We honestly believe that GippsGuide, with a home delivery of over 2500, plus pickup in around 20 business in Boolarra, Yinnar, Churchill, Mirboo North and Morwell, is a great low-cost way to get advertising exposure for your business- it stays at-hand, and is distributed every week. Thanks for reading and feel free to contact me if you’d like to see something in GippsGuide or make a contribution of any kind. Regards

Poh is a huge fan of Thai cuisine and when she discovers that Thai food guru, David Thompson, is in town she pulls out all stops to get him to drop by the kitchen. She’s delighted when he agrees to come and share a recipe for a classic green curry. An Aussie, David, is internationally renowned for his knowledge of Thai cuisine, a cuisine he argues is one of the world’s greatest, and his green beef curry is a great example. David insists that only fresh coconut milk can be used in a green curry, though Poh does try and talk him into the idea that the tinned variety is OK. As David argues strongly that this is not the case, Poh goes to the markets to give us some tips on how to improve our chances of getting a coconut with good milk. One of David’s favourite pastimes in the kitchen is getting people to taste chilli and he talks Poh into eating a fresh unadorned chilli. While she struggles with its heat, he wryly observes, “I have to say most people wouldn’t do that!” As he cooks the curry, he shows her how the heat of chilli can be buffered by the coconut milk.

GippsGuide Trivia... In the 19th Century, a tree in Thorpdale was measured as being over 114 m (375 feet) tall by a certified surveyor using a theodolite. The tree was later felled in 1880 and re-measured along the ground, confirming the initial measurement. In 1976 the tree’s location was marked by a plaque and a pole one-tenth the height of the tree.

...and Humour

Three sons left home, went out on their own and prospered. Getting back together, they discussed the gifts they were able to give their elderly Mother. The first said, “I built a big house for our Mother.” The second said, “I sent her a Mercedes with a driver.” The third smiled and said, “I’ve got you both beat. You remember how Mom enjoyed reading the Bible? And you know she can’t see very well any more. I sent her a remarkable parrot that recites the entire Bible. It took Elders in the church 12 years to teach him. He’s one of a kind. Mama just has to name the chapter and verse, and the parrot recites it.” Soon thereafter, Mom sent out her letters of thanks: “Milton,” she wrote one son, “the house you built is so huge. I live in only one room, but I have to clean the whole house.” “Gerald,” she wrote to another, “I am too old to travel any more. My eyesight isn’t what it used to be. I stay most of the time at home, so I rarely use the Mercedes. And the driver is so rude!” “Dearest Donald,” she wrote to her third son, “you have the good sense to know what your Mother likes. The chicken was delicious!”
