When Rotarians see a need, they act!
Ensuring academic success Elementary School: Your First Dictionary! Each year, local Rotarians go into each elementary school and personally gift a new dictionary to every 3rd grader. “When a child receives their new dictionary, and for many children in Adams 14 I know it’s the first book they can truly call their own, I see their face light up with pride. Their eyes tell the story of hope and graditude.” - Kay Lea Carri, Commece City Rotarian, 3 years
Middle and High School: Backpacks to Briefcases With the help of local Rotarians, Adams 14 middle and high schoolers participate in mock interviews and gain other valuable jobpreparedness skills. “When people say it takes a village, I smile because that’s exactly what it feels like when I’m helping a student with interview skills…I know I’m having an impact.” - Dan Clark, Commerce City Rotarian, 38 years
High School: Making College and Trade School Possible! Since 1960, the Commerce City Rotary Club has donated over $650,000 in scholarships to Adams 14 students. “Every year I’m moved beyond words by the accomplishments of our Adams 14 scholarship applicants. It’s been my privilege to work with these young scholars.” - René Bullock, Commerce City Rotarian, 7 years
Promoting student health and wellness Oral and General Healthcare
The American Journal for Public Health found that “Children with poor oral health status were nearly three times more likely than their counterparts to miss school as a result of dental pain.” Poor health and dental hygiene leads to absenteeism and low academic performance. Every year, the Commerce City Rotary Club, in partnership with Kids First Health Care, a local non-profit school-based health provider with more than 40 years at schools in Adams 14, distributes oral hygiene kits to all Adams 14 1st graders.
Heart and Sole
Every holiday season, students from the school district’s most financially disadvantaged families obtain new shoes and socks. Since the inception of the Heart and Sole initiative 25 years ago, 12,000 children have received new shoes from the Commerce City Rotary Club.
Mental Health First Aid
In partnership with the Community Reach Center, a local non-profit dedicated to providing access to mental health services, the Commerce City Rotary Club provides access to mental health education, awareness campaigns and vital resources that serve our students and families in their hour of need. This program also serves U.S. veterans.
“Just as our students have learned CPR to respond to certain health emergencies, they’re now learning Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) to identify, understand and respond to behavioral health crises. Once trained, they have the amazing capacity to identify concerns and get help.” - Lindy Lewis, Commerce City Rotarian, 3 years
Developing the next generation of leaders Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) Summer Camps RYLA is a week-long, intensive leadership experience organized by Rotary District 5450 (Colorado) in collaboration with Rotary District 5440 (Wyoming and Nebraska). The program provides middle- and high school-aged students the opportunity to develop leadership skills through exciting indoor and outdoor activities, engaging workshops, inspiring speakers, and peer mentoring. RYLA attendees have fun, gain valuable leadership skills, and develop lasting friendships with other students from across Colorado and beyond.
Youth Exchange Program Through both short- and long-term stays, students learn a new language, discover another culture, and truly become global citizens. Exchanges for students ages 15-19 are sponsored by Rotary clubs in more than 100 countries.
Interact Club The Adams City High School Interact club helps students develop leadership skills while discovering the power of “Service Above Self. In 2019, the club raised more than $1000 for ShelterBox USA, a non-profit which delivers emergency shelter supplies such tents, first aid and water purification kits to disaster sites worldwide. Interact students also received a $10,000 grant to work with youth to fight stigmas associated with mental health issues.
