Employee Spotlight: John Mendoza During the worst of this winter’s many snowy nights and early mornings, families across Adams 14 and Commerce City could rest assured that their school buildings, roads and parking lots would be as clear as possible thanks to the efforts of people like John Mendoza. Mendoza would often report to work at 2 a.m., driving his snowremoval truck around the district – but that early start didn’t mean he left as soon as the roads were clear. “He’s very professional, a salt-ofthe-earth kind of guy,” Adams 14 manager of operations Leo Rodriguez said. “Even after being done with snow removal and coming in at 2 a.m. he took care

of other things when most people would have left. He’s just top-notch.” A carpenter by trade, Mendoza has also been a driver trainer for the district for a decade. “It’s neat to go back into these buildings and see the same faces that I transported in elementary school over in high school now,” he said. While he considers his colleagues around the district as a kind of extended family – “It’s business first, but we’re a close group,” he said – Mendoza has been married for more than 20 years to his high school sweetheart, Nicole, and has two teenage daughters.

While woodworking is his main skill, Mendoza is something of a jack-ofall-trades for the district. “He always helps out any of his coworkers even if they’re a different trade – he helps out all of his teammates and is always happy to do it,” said Jeanne Mojarro, service center assistant for the district. The thrill of not knowing what each day will bring is something Mendoza enjoys as well. “I think it’s why I love the job – there’s so much variety,” Mendoza said. “One minute we’re working with wood, another with metal. The rush of solving a problem is what I find exciting.”
