Communities Mental Health & Wellbeing Fund closes for applications in Aberdeen Due to the overwhelming response and high number of applications received since Year 3 of the Communities Mental Health & Wellbeing Fund opened on 15th September, The Partnership Group overseeing the Fund has taken the decision to close the Fund and will not be accepting any more applications as of Friday 27th October 2023. Given the popularity of Year 2 of the Fund this was something we anticipated could happen. Please refer to our Communities Mental Health & Wellbeing Fund Guidance for Aberdeen City PDF that was published online when the Fund launched in September. Within this guidance we urged organisations to apply as early as possible for the Fund as “last year the majority of funding had been distributed within eight weeks of being opened”. The need for funding to support mental health and wellbeing within our community has increased exponentially over the last year. Thanks to all who have submitted an application and shown interest in the Communities Mental Health & Wellbeing Fund this year. If your organisation was planning to submit an application and would like support in identifying other potential grant funding, please do contact ACVO’s Funding Officer, Claire Shaw. Details about how to get in touch can be found at acvo.org.uk/funding.

Latest update from The Promise Scotland from Gette Cobban, Senior Development Officer - ACVO TSI
#KeepThePromise New Forum I am delighted to be able to mention that our new 3rd sector forum met for the first time on 3rd October. This forum is open to any 3rd sector organisation supporting children, young people and their families. Huge thanks to Anna at VSA for offering the VSA boardroom and providing us with
organisations who have confirmed their interest in this new forum and we look forward to welcoming them to the next meeting set for Tuesday 5th December between 12.00 and 14.00. These meetings are an opportunity for 3rd sector reps to meet, share ideas, share knowledge,

Who is The Promise for? The Promise was the 2020 outcome from the largest ever care review which was launched by the Scottish Government in 2016. During that time 5500 voices were heard: 2640 people with care experience of all ages and 2320 parents, carers & unpaid workers (volunteers). 500 organisations were interviewed and research papers were scoured.

I wonder if you have asked yourself this? In short, it is for everyone, all Scotland’s children should “grow up to be loved, safe & respected so they can reach their full potential.”
Those voices were listened to and Scotland decided that lessons must be learned and change must take place. A limited timescale has been set and this is not a strategy document that will run on and on, change needs to happen now. A timescale has been set and The Promise needs to be met by 2030. The Promise is not for care experienced children only, it is much more inclusive, it is talking about what ALL children need. So, all work we do is in fact about #keepingthepromise.

We Too! I had a lovely chat the other week with Phionna McInnes, Chief Ninja at We Too. We Too! is a local charity empowering families of children with disabilities. We talked about The Promise and agreed how important that inclusiveness is, ensuring all children have what they need to achieve the best outcomes for them. We Too! promote that true inclusiveness within the sessions they organise for families. “Relaxed Sessions” promoted by them are exactly that, whilst predominantly for children with additional support needs, all are welcome and true inclusiveness is promoted. For more information about We Too!, and to find out how to access their excellent quarterly magazine which is packed full of information, have a look at www.wetoo.org.uk

ACVO Funding Member’s Event ACVO had such a fantastic morning at our Member’s Event on Wednesday 4th October at Cafe Ahoy - it was wonderful to see so many familiar faces from Aberdeen’s third sector in attendance. On the theme of funding, we had some insightful discussions about the The Scottish Government Communities Mental Health & Wellbeing Fund and the Just Transition PB Fund from Claire and Sarah from the ACVO Team. Also, many thanks to Carol from Aberdeen City Health and Social Care Partnership for coming along to share details of the Health Improvement Fund. Thank you to everyone from our third sector community who joined us and contributed to these conversations – it was fantastic to see such a great turn out!

Aberdeen Cyrenia appeal for urgently supplies as cost-ofcontinues to hit No
This year's production at Aberdeen Arts Centre on November 24th & 25th - features people supported by Inspire, staff and long standing supporters of the charity which provides support to local adults with learning disabilities and additional support needs. Inspire has produced two previous pantomimes - in 2019 and 2020 but this is their first production postCovid and promises to be the biggest and best yet: "What's at the end of the purple brick road? Where did these lovely lilac slippers come from? And can you really trust someone with such an evil cackle? Join the people Inspire supports and their staff as they discover what it means to have a heart, a brain, courage and most importantly - to be heard." All sales are done through the box office at the Arts Centre via this link, with all profit from the event being reinvested into the Added Value activity programme that Inspire delivers to enhance the lives of the people it supports.
Aberdeen Cyrenians has launched its annual Harvest Appeal, asking communities to come together to help those facing hardship, hunger, or homelessness this winter. With demand for the charity’s services increasing by 600% in 2022 from the previous year, support has never been more pressing to ensure the most vulnerable people in Aberdeen’s communities are cared for. Running until 21 November, community groups, schools, businesses, and the public are being encouraged to host collection points where food, toiletries and other essentials can be donated and then shared with families and individuals turning to the charity for help. Donna Hutchison, Head of Corporate and Business Services at Aberdeen Cyrenians, said: “We are pleased to launch our annual Harvest campaign which is always a celebration of community giving and sharing. Last year, communities created 82 collections across Aberdeen City and Shire, donating over 8,000 meals for people in need. “The cost-of-living crisis and escalating food and energy costs continue to place significant
burden on people, which means more people are turning to us desperate for support. Many have never needed this help before and don’t know where to turn. “We are seeing devastating numbers of people facing food insecurity. Our stock has been depleting for a long time with demand being so high and as the colder months loom, many people will be worried about how they will feed their family and heat their homes. Sadly, many won’t be able to do either. “We are asking our compassionate and dedicated people in our community to help us meet the ongoing demand. More and more people are spiralling into poverty, and lack of food has a knock-on effect on people’s mental and physical wellbeing. It's a heart-breaking reality that a significant number of people in our community are dealing with profound isolation, bitter cold and gnawing hunger. “The recent Challenge Poverty Week has highlighted the ongoing crisis of poverty across the country. This is a vitally important appeal for Aberdeen’s communities, and every year it becomes even more critical. So,

A miracle can be found on Constitution Street this December as Santa and his elves will be appearing at Aberdeen Science Centre for the return of its Science with Santa workshops.

ooking is now open for the winter-themed lab sessions, which are set to take place on Saturday and Sunday,
December 16 and 17. During the Science with Santa workshops, children will be able create their own miniature snowmen, or other snow-creations, with shaving foam and baking soda ‘snow’, and can then ‘melt’ the sculptures with a chemical reaction using vinegar ‘rain’. They will also be able to make their own special Christmas baubles, perfect for decorating their Christmas tree at home, using paint bubbles and chromatography. Alongside the festive scientific shenanigans, Santa will be available for photo opportunities in the lab and will
be sure to bring along a special gift for all the boys and girls he meets. Admission to the Science with Santa workshop costs £18 per child. Included as part of this is participation in the session, a Christmas gift and photo with Santa Claus, admission for up to two accompanying adults and one hour of time on the exhibition floor, either prior to or after the workshop. Under 3’s can also join their older siblings at the centre for free but will not be able to take part in the workshop. Places at the workshop sessions will be limited, so make sure to book ahead to avoid disappointment. Calli Buchanan, public programme coordinator at Aberdeen Science Centre said: “Christmas is truly coming early for our visitors this year as Santa and his
smartest elves will be transforming our lab into a winter wonderland for our Science with Santa workshops. “The sessions will see children make, and then melt, their own snow sculptures, construct their own baubles for the Christmas tree and of course get to meet the main man himself, Santa Claus.” The company’s teams in Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Forth Valley, Tayside, the Highlands and Moray have numerous clients across all sectors including offices, education, retail, healthcare and manufacturing as well as specialised one-off work. Good Boost sessions support participants with musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions such as arthritis, back pain, neurological conditions and people before and after hip and knee replacement surgery to participate in individually-tailored, water-based therapeutic exercises in friendly and supportive group classes. Each participant is provided with a waterproof tablet-computer installed with Good Boost’s AI technology. The programme creates a tailored and
personalised therapeutic aquatic exercise programme for each participant, displayed on the ‘Aqua Move’ app with instructional videos and details to support participants with mobility, balance and fitness. The Aqua Move app was designed by Good Boost’s musculoskeletal specialists, to ensure that exercises are suitable and appropriate for participants to follow, in addition to adapting and evolving around each participant based on their feedback. This unique model of therapeutic exercise delivery on tablet computers means that group classes can be delivered, but where each participant follows a tailored programme unique to their needs and requirements. Participant Helen McBrearty said: “I really enjoy attending Good Boost as it is helps with the osteoarthritis in my knees. “The water helps to make exercise less painful and working with the tablet, I can go at my own pace. I have also enjoyed getting to know some of the other participants and the staff at the pool who are very friendly and helpful.”
Ben Wilkins, Good Boost CEO, said: “It’s brilliant to hear the feedback from Good Boost participants at Sport Aberdeen. “This highlights the benefits people are experiencing as a result of how exceptionally well the Sport Aberdeen team have set-up and implemented Good Boost in their region. “Our mission as a social enterprise is to support people living with joint pain and health conditions to Move More, Have Fun and Feel Better, and it’s clear that all around Aberdeen, this is being delivered every single week”. Due to increasing demand, three new morning Good Boost classes have been added at Get active @ Northfield from Monday 30 October at 09:15, 10:15 and 11:15. These are free to attend for Sport Aberdeen members, or £6 per session for new customers. A one-hour induction must be completed before an individual can attend a session. Westfield Park, bordered by three schools, a sheltered housing complex, and a doctor's surgery, is a sanctuary accessible to all ages and abilities. The dedicated group of volunteers who regularly come together as Friends of Westfield Park, have worked tirelessly over the past few years to ensure this local haven is preserved and it’s importance as a green community asset is realised. Last year, the Friends won the favour of Aberdeen residents and saw their project funded in the via a public vote with the Just Transition PB Fund, and now, in a testament to the work of the volunteers within the group, Westfield Park has been awarded with the prestigious Green Flag Award. Find out more about Friends of Westfield Park, and the greenspace they work to care for and develop, in this ACVO News feature.
“The Green Flag Award is run by Beautiful Scotland and receiving this recognition is a huge achievement for us” says Kirsten Dickson, Treasurer with Friends of Westfield Park. “It means the park has been recognised, as one of a group of parks that feels welcoming and safe for everyone that visits. We are so lucky to have this accessible green space right at the heart of Bridge of Don providing a sanctuary for us as a community to engage with nature, improve physical and mental health and to come together to work on projects that really matter to us.” And on the morning of Friday 6th October 2023, the local community came together to celebrate the achievement and to see the flag being raised for the first time. “We were privileged to be joined by representatives from lots of the community groups who have supported us in our journey including; Bridge of Don Men's Shed, Co-op Community Fund, St Columba's Church, Aberdeen City
ACVO News 26 November 2023
Health and Social Care Partnership Health Improvement Fund, Braehead Primary School Eco Group, Bridge of Don Community Council and Aberdeen City Council” added Kirsten. “It’s taken us a long time to get to where we are, with all the work we have done since we started as a group in 2017, from small events like litter picking to larger projects like the sensory garden and securing funding for our container.” “Of course, it’s not just about us as a Friends group, the bulk of the Green Flag award submission is backed by Aberdeen City Council who oversee the management of the park as a whole - their support to us as a group has been fantastic, especially over the last year. Then there’s the support from within the community. We have received time, materials and funding from so many people and groups and their belief in us has helped boost our confidence.”
“The sun shone and the wind blew making the new green flag look really impressive against the blue sky! Thank you to everyone who came along and celebrated with us.” Kirsten, Treasurer of Friends of Westfield Park
The funding to secure the container mentioned above, came from the year 1 of the Scottish Government’s Just Transition Participatory Budgeting Fund which was distributed in Aberdeen City by ACVO, in partnership with NESCAN Hub. With the scheme, Friends of Westfield Park received a grant of £10,400 following the public vote in Aberdeen, further allowing the group to focus on community engagement and creating a space that could be enjoyed by all.
The funding supported multiple essential projects, each contributing to the park's enhancement. First on the list was the purchase of a storage container to house tools and equipment. But this wasn't just any container; it featured a green roof. This unique addition wasn't just for show but also to ensure that the container itself could reflect the green ethos and aims of the organisation. Gazebos, another item on their list, meant that no matter the weather, community events could take place, fostering engagement and knowledge-sharing. As well as creating a weather-resistant hub for learning and connection, Friends of Westfield Park are also able to loan their gazebos to other local groups, further benefiting the wider community.

“To me, it was quite emotional to think that the community thought as highly as they did of us. It was just incredible to have our aspiration and our dream come to life” Anneka, Chair and Secretary of Friends of Westfield Park
Interpretive panels and signage will also make their way into the park, helping visitors identify and learn about the rich wildflowers and wildlife within. It was a nod to their mission of making the park not just a green space but an educational hub for nature enthusiasts and to engage with local schools. Anneka Duncan, Chair and Secretary of Friends of Westfield Park, highlighted the benefits of having a central equipment hub. "Now we have everything in one spot, reducing the need to use our cars for equipment pick-up. It's a huge advantage for us and the environment." Kirsten adds, "Because we felt that we had really put our hearts into the application, it meant a lot to us to actually find out that the public had voted for us." Anneka echoed her sentiment, saying, "To me, it was quite emotional to think that the community thought as highly as they did of us. It was just incredible to have our aspiration and our dream come to life." The continued transformation of Westfield Park showcases the power of volunteering and community connection. Like other projects within the North East and Moray, money from the Just Transition PB Fund has enabled local, grassroots organisations, like Friends of Westfield Park, to build upon their existing work, facilitating the introduction of solutions which help the region move towards a net zero future.

The alarming speed of moving services online is excluding older people and leaving them in a vulnerable position.” Learner Graeme Findlay who recently attended one of the charity’s drop-in sessions says: “You are very disadvantaged now if you can't use a laptop or other device.” Interested in volunteering with Silver City Surfers? Let’s Discuss Offsetting – The Good & the Bad
Communities, Climate and Artificial Intelligence – Forum with AI Alliance
Peer Connects: peer support in services and crisis support
Is offsetting as good or as bad as it sounds? Want to know more and discuss the ins and outs of carbon offsets? Everybody welcome!
Come to an online community discussion with Scottish AI Alliance and SCCAN about AI and the climate crisis.
We’re pulling out all the stops to support and showcase all the fantastic peer support activity happening in Scotland! Be part of Peer Support in Action! as we work together to develop the peer landscape in Scotland and show the world what peer support can do.
Carbon offset schemes allow individuals and companies to invest in environmental projects around the world in order to balance out their own carbon footprint. The sector is growing very quickly and Scotland has already seen major natural capital investments led by institutional investors, corporations and charitable trusts. This climate café will dig deeper into the why and how and hopefully provide you with food for thought and for action! The speakers are: Dr Nikolaos Vlassis, Marta Dondini & David Hunter Each speaker will give a 15-20 minute presentation. There will then be a chance for the audience to ask questions.
We will explore how AI is being used to combat the climate crisis and how Scotland can work towards an AI future based on trust, ethics and inclusion. During the session, we will discuss: What is AI, and why are we talking about it? What is Scotland’s AI Strategy? How can AI be trustworthy, ethical and inclusive in the context of Community Climate Action? How will advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) impact the climate crisis? How can it help, and how can it hinder? How can I find out more? If you have any questions, email us at events@sccan.scot. Find out more about the Scottish AI Alliance and their work at: www.scottishai.com

Our first Sportsman Charity Dinner takes place at the Sandman Signature Hotel in Aberdeen on Thursday 23rd Nov 2023, where you’ll enjoy an evening with former Scotland International rugby union legend and BBC sports commentator, Andy Nicol.
We are delighted to have our Christmas Fayre back for the first time since the pandemic – yes it has been that long! So it goes without saying that this one will be our biggest, fun-est (we know it’s not a word) and best one yet!
The Afternoon Tea and Fashion Show event, organised by Friends of Home-Start Aberdeen, takes place on Sunday 19th November 2023 at The Chester Hotel. Running from 2pm to 5pm, tickets are priced at £40/head and includes afternoon tea, the fashion show, an array of stallholders and a pop-up charity shop. Entertainment will be provided by the acclaimed Scottish retro trio The Vintage Girls, aptly named to accompany the showcasing of second-hand clothing. Home-Start Aberdeen provides life-changing support to families across the city through its local community network of trained volunteers and experienced staff. The charity’s approach is as individual as the people it helps, offering compassionate, confidential support, and helping parents to gain the knowledge, skills and resources they need to give their children the best possible start in life.
You will also enjoy a fabulous three-course dinner, followed by a lively and interesting talk from Andy giving us an insight into both his illustrious rugby and TV career spanning 30 years. This fundraising event also features a live auction and Raffle with fabulous prizes to be won. The event will raise funds for the services we offer to people in the Northeast with sensory loss. North East Sensory Services (NESS) is an independent, local charity providing practical and emotional support and information to around 6,500 people of all ages living with a serious sight and/or hearing impairment in the North East. Our services help to reduce social isolation in our service users, enable them to live life as independently as possible, and to deal with the impact of their sensory impairment on their own terms.
Fun for all the family! Pottery, Christmas decorations and more direct from Kenya. Unique Christmas gift ideas, home bakes, games and more… FREE ENTRY All proceeds raised from the afternoon will enable Gathimba Edwards Foundation to support the education and psychosocial support of children in Kenya. A big thanks to the 18 local crafters and businesses joining us to share Christmas gift ideas for all the family and our bakers who will be delivering delicious treats to purchase for a small donation. A perfect combination to go with the free tea and coffee for all our visitors, thanks to Village Hotel.
