Changing your Constitution to allow virtual meetings - get in touch with ACVO now!

In the light of Covid-19 restrictions on meeting face-to-face, many organisations have taken to using virtual meeting software such as Zoom or Microsoft Teams to carry on their activity. This is a welcome development and can do much to make meetings of all kinds more accessible, not just during “lockdown” situations. The Charity regulator (OSCR) is encouraging charities to review their constitutions to specifically allow virtual meetings where participants use an electronic means of attendance or “hybrid” meetings where some people will attend virtually and others in a face-to-face setting. This can allow organisations to regularise their use of virtual board or committee meetings or AGMs. If you wish to discuss amending your constitution to specifically allow the use of virtual or hybrid meetings, please contact ACVO Development Officer, Sandy Mathers on 01224 686075 or by email at; sandy.mathers@acvo.org.uk

Living Well Café Brimmond Challenge: Latest fundraiser helps donations for vital North-East service top £17,000 Living Well Cafés have been running in the North East since 2015. They support those living with dementia and their carers and offer a safe, welcoming and non-judgmental environment, providing an opportunity to come and socialise with others in a similar situation. However, due to the withdrawal of core funding, the future of the cafes are uncertain. While the management team are actively looking to secure alternative sources of funding there has also been a drive to raise money through fundraising activities. Linda & Jeanette from the Living Well Team, update ACVO News about the latest of these - their challenge to climb Brimmond Hill from 7am to 7pm which took place on Saturday June 5th…

ACVO News 15 June 30 2021

NEWS

“The weather for our fundraiser couldn't have been better, with sunshine from 7 am till 7 pm. We arrived at 6.30 am to put up bunting and balloons and we had positive messages of encouragement to hang on the gorse bushes as we climbed up. A rota of Occupational Therapists joined us throughout the day their energy put us to shame, but then they were likely half our age so had twice as much energy! That's our excuse anyway! We took our Living Well Cafe flag with us and managed to get it wedged into the cairn at the top of Brimmond. The last time it was in use was when it was at the top of Kilimanjaro. A bit of a difference - Kilimanjaro to Brimmond but no less important. So many people came along to join in and climb the hill, with a total of 76 people joining us throughout the day. Not everyone was able to do the climb, some sat at the bottom and had a picnic and we had a blether with them when we got back down the hill which was lovely too. There was such a happy atmosphere, people were glad to see each other and exchange news. One couple - with a combined age of 161 made it to the top, and enjoyed every minute. How amazing is that? The youngest person was 3 - and she ran all the way, up and down! The total

number of climbs were around 150. Sair feet and sair legs come nowhere near to describing how we felt on Sunday ..... and Monday was even worse! But it was all in a good cause and worth every single ache. A highlight was when a gentleman appeared - he works for the NHS and having read the article in the P&J a few weeks previously came along to donate his £500 bonus which was awarded to health care and social care staff. He thought we would benefit more from it than he would. We were flabbergasted at his generosity and it certainly made us skip up the hill afterwards (well, for a few steps anyway!). People have really been very supportive and generous, to date donations have topped £17,000. We are truly grateful for every single pound we have received and can assure people it will be put to good use. Everyone we spoke to has said how fantastic a day it was - a real escape from the pandemic, in fact you forgot there was even a pandemic that day."

Join a team of passionate people transforming lives across the North East... In an exciting development at the organisation, Station House Media Unit (shmu), one of the core cultural organisations in Aberdeen, is looking to recruit 8 people for roles that will make a real difference to the lives of people living in the region.

ACVO News 21 June 30 2021

We passionately believe in supporting people to expand their horizons and achieve their full potential. Our approach, methods, projects and initiatives are nationally recognised, positioning us as a centre of excellence for the work we do. As one of the core cultural organisations in the region, we’re on a mission to use media to creatively transform lives. We’ve grown from strength to strength and have seriously big ambitions for our future. To realise these ambitions, we’re actively recruiting talented people for key roles across the organisation. Our work has always involved supporting disadvantaged communities and the COVID-19 pandemic has reinforced the importance of inclusion and creating opportunities for all. We also go big on collaboration and partnership at shmu, working within communities and with experienced partners to deliver services that meet the real

needs of service users. We’re relevant, active contributors determined to make a difference. The periods of lockdown have shown the importance of being digitally connected in supporting our personal and community wellbeing, however the impact of everything moving online, including vital services, has only highlighted further the digital divide and increased inequalities. Managed and delivered by shmu and funded by Aberdeenshire Council’s Young Person’s Guarantee, Digital CONNECT is a partnership initiative which will engage young people who have limited or no access to the internet or digital devices and help them develop the digital skills they require to make the successful transition into sustained employment. Two of the roles we are recruiting for relate to this project, a Digital CONNECT Coordinator and Digital CONNECT Development Worker.

No matter what your job is at shmu, everyone’s work is about the same thing – transforming the lives of individuals and communities across North East Scotland.

ACVO News 22 June 30 2021

shmuTRAIN uses community media platforms (radio, TV, & music) to motivate and support participants to move on successfully to a positive destination of employment, further education or training. Due to the success of these programmes, and the impact of COVID-19, we are recruiting for an Employability Support Worker to help those most in need to develop their confidence, communication and digital skills alongside employability skills which will support them to move positively into the world of work.

Over the last 10 years, our shmuTRAIN programme has transformed the lives of hundreds of people across the region

Sometimes, it feels like the work we do is a well-kept secret. We’d love to change that and expand our engagement initiatives by amplifying the sound of underrepresented voices across the city, celebrating our communities, and tackling negative stereotypes through the power of digital media. We are recruiting for a talented Web Designer, Communications Officer and Project Administrator to help make this happen.

Our Creative and Digital Media Foundation Apprenticeship programme has gained national recognition and our delivery remit has been extended to work across 6 schools in Aberdeenshire this academic year, with the expectation that this will grow further both in scale and reach. To continue the transformative impact this course has had on pupils we’re recruiting for a Creative and Digital Media Trainer

ACVO News 23 June 30 2021

We’re also incredibly excited about the potential of the North East Culture Collective (NECC) programme to re-connect neighbours, re-establish confidence, grow skills, combat isolation and improve health and wellbeing. We are proud to lead this consortium programme, funded by Creative Scotland, on behalf of Culture Aberdeen; a programme that will empower communities to confidently take control of commissioning their own cultural programmes and support creative practitioners to shape and inform our COVID-19 recovery, exploring and expanding the positive role that arts and culture can play in society.

This pilot programme is a seachange in commissioning cultural activities in the North East and we’re searching for a North East Culture Collective Coordinator to lead this process on behalf of the partnership.

Culture can be an overused word which is used quite glibly when referencing the workplace. But that’s not the case at shmu. We’re looking for 8 people who are passionate about their own discipline and who are looking for meaningful employment that really does make a difference to others. If you enquire, you’ll discover there’s so much more to shmu than you realised. ACVO News 24 June 30 2021

Great Glen stand up paddle board fundraiser Rachel Thompson updates ACVO News about her training progress, ahead of taking on the challenge in August.

Its now June, where on earth has the time gone? I have 2 months to go before I embark on an epic challenge which will test my newly acquired stand up paddle board skills and set me off on a journey of learning about our beautiful waterways and country side. I had originally planned to get as much practice as possible after the first time stepping onto a paddleboard in Rubislaw quarry on easter Monday 2021. Some of you may recall it was -2.5 degrees and snow blizzards whipped up just in time for us to roll our eggs with our families. I must admit and hour before going along, feeling like a lamb to the slaughter I was constantly checking to see if the event was cancelled.

Adventure Aberdeen were amazing with their instruction and I decided to stay on my knees for this session as I focussed on position and paddling technique. I have lots of metal in my lower body after my accident and it kind of acts like a thermostat stuck on cold, so I must admit I wasn’t too keen on getting wet and having to get changed out of a wet- wetsuit whilst battling the elements. It was certainly a baptism by fire and in a way I’m kind of glad this was may first experience, how much worst could the weather be on a 60 mile trip in August?

ACVO News 25 June 30 2021 Since then I have managed 2 more lessons on a purpose build pond down near Laurencekirk and with more great tuition I experienced standing up for the first time. I found I quickly out grew the pond and was eager to get out and explore our stunning coast line. I booked in for a trip out of Catterline where the organiser SUP2Summit took me out and really helped me understand all about safety and SUP and started to challenge me with standing up for longer distances over not so calm water. This trip was made even more amazing as we were surrounded by local wildlife, we even came across a school of dolphins. I think this trip really emphasised the whole experience of paddle boarding, it’s a complete escape from the stresses in life, its freedom to just be in the moment, its peace and tranquillity and an absolute joy.

Saying that, my body was screaming at me the next day, what a workout it is! This was a bit of a reality check and I then thought, oh my goodness, can I actually do this for 4 full on days (and 3 potentially sleepless nights!) as I cover the 60 miles of the challenge? I have now also experienced falling in the north sea and was pleasantly surprised at the protection my wetsuit gave me so any trepidation around cold water exposure has been alleviated. Learning is essential and going out with others is key to that, this is something that I would advocate for anyone wanting to give this a go. Get some lessons and learn as much as possible about the water ways. I’ve discovered some amazing SUP groups and recently participated in a Zoom session with the RNLI.

I’ve now set up a Gofundme page where I really hope I can raise a good amount of money for the amazing volunteers at Street Friends Helping the Homeless. They are out 24/7 helping some of our most vulnerable citizens and I know that ever penny raised will help make a difference. If you do fancy sponsoring me please go to: gofund.me/46951778. I’ve been overwhelmed by the support so far in my attempt to raise £1000, no matter what size of contribution, my gratitude comes deep from my heart from every one of you that support my journey.
