Alison Chandler The whole ACVO team and Board wish to express great sadness at the news of the passing of our colleague Alison Chandler, who died on April 14th. She worked tirelessly for the third sector throughout her life and was a valued and respected colleague across the sector and all partner organisations. Alison’s skill in supporting those with ideas to bring them to fulfilment is borne out by the many successful organisations providing services for the people of Aberdeen City and beyond, and she was so proud of those organisations and a real Champion of our whole sector. Alison loved Spain and the Camino, and she was thankful to have walked part of the Camino in 2015 when she was diagnosed with cancer a year later, as the strength of purpose she had gained from that journey helped to spark an outpouring of creativity which nurtured her own recovery and inspired so many people. Alison told this story in the small film below, entitled “Painting Myself Brave”. Alison’s own journey through fear towards recovery and resilience helped a lot of people find strength to face their own fears.
“I had the privilege of knowing Alison for the length of time that she worked at ACVO, and it was clear when I first met her that Alison had fire in her belly, was passionate about the third sector, and above all she believed in empowering people and communities to bring about positive change and improvements. Alison was a fierce defender of justice and was respected by the thousands of organisations and professionals whose life she touched throughout the decades of service to the third sector in Aberdeen and the country. On a personal level I enjoyed the many events I attended with Alison, her wonderful artwork, our conversations about life, and admired how she could turn a negative into the positive while always encouraging others on their own journey through life and work.” Paul O Connor - ACVO Chair
We in the team will always remember Alison’s wonderful sense of humour, mischievous laugh, and her flair for telling a story and while Alison may be gone from our everyday lives, her legacy will very much live on. Everyone at ACVO sends our condolences to Miles, Holly and Chris, and to all of Alison's friends and family.
Alison's family asks that no flowers are sent but if you wish, donations to Marie Curie nurses would be fitting.

a brand-new creative programme for adults with barriers to cultural engagement
T
he courses provide a nurturing and supportive creative process
that empowers participants to explore their personal narrative, encourage selfexpression and develop the skills and confidence to share their own perspectives and experiences through a creative process. Shmu has partnered with local organisations Aberdeen Cyrenians, Aberdeen in Recovery, Families Outside and Turning Point Scotland to deliver the programme. The courses run for eight weeks and are currently hosted online but will look to move to face to face delivery at their base in Woodside and restart sessions in the Creative Media Unit in HMP Grampian when government guidance allows. The courses look at a range of creative mediums including spoken word, song writing, music and film. Before the course started participants were asked what they hoped to achieve from the course with responses such as; ‘Improve confidence’; ‘Work better as part of a team’; ‘During lockdown I haven’t really seen anyone so it will be
nice to see some people and break the isolation’; ‘To be able to share my work with others’; ‘I hope to develop my skills, learn new things, improve my confidence and have fun’ gathered from participants. At the halfway point, the team at shmu caught up with participants to find out how they were getting on. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive with people stating; ‘What you have done for me in a month has meant a hell of a lot and I find it truly inspiring – thanks guys’; ‘I have learned a lot in the 4 weeks and my confidence has definitely improved so far’; ‘I agreed to this course to build my confidence and it is definitely doing that’; ‘I am absolutely loving the course. I always thought I wasn’t that creative but I can be. It has really helped my confidence and I can’t wait for the next four weeks.’ shmu are hoping to work with more partners throughout the year, so if you are interested in finding out more about Create Express Transform, please contact Kirsteen Caldwell at kirsteen.caldwell@shmu.org.uk

Rethinking Reserves Opendoor Webinar Impact Funding Partners is inviting applications from third sector organisations and community groups to the Social Isolation And Loneliness Fund 2021. The fund opened for applications on the 6th of April 2021 and will close on the 30th of April 2021. Decisions will be made and communicated by 21st May 2021. The funding will be available to local organisations to enable them to support older people (aged 55yrs+) who may be at risk of social isolation, loneliness or reduced wellbeing due to Coronavirus and the impact of restrictions. The fund is open to third sector organisations and community groups. You do not need to be a registered charity, although your constitution/set of
rules should make clear that funds will only be spent on purposes established in the constitution, and not distributed amongst members. You must deliver activities between the 24th of May 2021 and the 27th of August 2021. There are three tiers of funding available: £500, £1000, £1500. They are keen that as many at risk older people (aged 55yrs+) as possible benefit from this funding. There is a total of £54,000 available so organisations are encouraged to only apply for the amount of funding they will require for their activities, preventing any underspends. This will enable the available funds to be distributed more widely across Scotland. Find out more and apply here.
