TSI Scotland Network

Position Statement on Public & Third Sector Cuts and Volunteering (March 2023)

The TSI Scotland Network is a body of charities that support the third sector across Scotland. There are 32 TSIs – or Third Sector Interfaces in Scotland, one for each local authority area. TSIs also have a role in the local implementation of the national Volunteering Action Plan, including helping both public and third sector organisations to find the volunteers they need. The TSI Scotland Network is supported to carry out its main functions by the Third Sector Unit of Scottish Government. We recognise that there are many pressures on public and third sector budgets at the moment, and that there may be cuts that impact on people volunteering. Where local authorities, for example, withdraw from delivering vital services, there is often the expectation that the community will step in and deliver services as volunteers.

Our Position The STUC/Volunteer Scotland Charter sets out the 10 key principles for assuring legitimacy and preventing exploitation of workers and volunteers. We recognise the principles of the Charter including, ”Volunteers should not carry out duties formerly carried out by paid workers nor should they be used to disguise the effects of non-filled vacancies or cuts in services.” We also support the rights of local communities to respond as they see fit to cuts to local services. Therefore, as a Network we will take the following position: We will not advertise volunteering opportunities that include any role/task previously undertaken by paid staff. We will, however, continue to offer volunteering best practice advice and guidance, governance support and capacity building support to the Third Sector on how to sustain a service in the context of the STUC/VS charter when the alternative might be service closure. We may review any decision not to help advertise for volunteers when alternative service delivery models are established. We will continue to challenge senior policy/decision-makers regarding such proposals specifically on the grounds of the STUC/VS charter alongside wider issues. ·We will continue to regard some roles as unsuitable for volunteering, such as those involving personal care, and will not advertise those as a matter of course.

More information ACVO is the TSI for Aberdeen - you can see an overview of what we do in the city, and find out how to keep up to date by following us on social media and subscribing to our mailing lists, at acvo.org.uk/overview. ACVO Opportunities

Community Spaces The ACVO Team know that Aberdeen has a wealth of community and third sector spaces available to hire and with our new Community Spaces directory we want to help spread the word! Third Sector/community organisations in Aberdeen that have a space for hire are welcome to submit their details via our platform to be featured, free of charge, on the Community Spaces page on the ACVO website. The ACVO team regularly receive enquiries about the hire of spaces in the community for meetings, events and team days so the aim of this new initiative is to provide a listing platform so others working within the sector, and the wider public, can discover the amazing facilities our sector has to offer and support organisations directly by spending their money with the hire.

Who is this platform for? Any third sector or community organisation with a space to hire in Aberdeen City! We also welcome the submission of spaces run by the local authority that allow for community access.

How does the process work? You can submit details using the form on the Community Spaces platform on the ACVO Website and your space will be added free of charge to the public directory. The platform is essentially a listings site so ACVO will not process any enquiries relating to the space – you should provide contact details/web links which people can use to get in touch directly with you to make enquiries.

What information should I provide? All required information is listed on the Community Spaces submission form but if you have any questions about it you can get in touch via enquiries@acvo.org.uk

Gathimba Edwards Foundation on their last trip to Kenya.

North East volunteers set to return to Kenya for first housebuilding trip since Covid-19 North East based charity, Gathimba Edwards Foundation, are finally able to continue its annual house building trip to Kenya to build homes for local families after a three year hiatus due to Covid-19.

ACVO News 11 April 2023

I

n July, the charity will lead a fortnight long trip to Karatina in Kenya supported by

volunteers from the North East of Scotland with a target of building three homes for local families. The charity has so far secured 25 volunteers and raised £12,000 but hopes to almost triple this figure by July. Since its launch in 2015, the foundation has organised and executed five house building trips which has involved over 250 volunteers from the North East, and beyond, and built over 50 homes for 212 local Kenyan children and their families. This year the charity has a target to raise £33,500 for three homes and half acre of land. Volunteer Darren Cocker of Aberdeen’s Bancon Homes has been involved with every trip to date and oversees all aspects of

the project, from initial conception through to completion. Darren said, “I am really excited to finally make the return to Kenya which was put on hold due to the pandemic. The reward I feel when I see families and children being handed the keys to the homes that we have built from scratch in a matter of days is incredible.” Myles Edwards, the Co-Founder of the charity said, “I am absolutely thrilled that we are able to return to Kenya again this Summer. This year we are looking to partner with 12 corporate sponsors to help build three family homes in July 2023. The support we receive will transform lives immediately, providing the families with a safe place of shelter and land to farm. A three bedroom, fully furnished house can cost up to £8,500 and although we have had a fantastic level of sign-ups so far, we are still looking for more volunteers to

help raise funds for the materials and land required for the new homes.” Watch Gillian's testimonial about her experience volunteering with the charity below. With numerous projects across Kenya, the Gathimba Edwards Foundation aims to help disadvantaged children get a start in life, whether it be support through shelter, clothing, education or sustainable food solutions and giving them the opportunity to not only live their lives as children but also to develop as adults.

Visitors to Aberdeen Science Centre encouraged to look for a different kind of STEM this spring

R

ecent weather conditions might have you questioning it, but spring is here!

The second of the new exhibits, a mesmerising slinky treadmill, can be found on the second floor of the centre in the Test It area.

Now is the time of year when gardeners look to see the fruits of their labours as new shoots start to appear in the garden – however Aberdeen Science Centre is encouraging visitors to see a different kind of STEM this spring.

Visitors to the centre will also be able to experience the OPITO Theatre of Energy, which is now open to the public throughout the day.

The centre has unveiled three new exhibits for visitors to explore. The first is a new spaceship docking manoeuvre exhibit, which challenges both children and adults to ‘virtually park’ a spaceship in the centre’s Space zone - an experience which is truly out of this world! A new HD screen has been installed by local company AV One Solutions to provide a closer look at life in space via the NASA website.

A truly immersive experience, it delivers three interactive experiences, each of which is based around energy. The Story of Energy highlights the importance of having a mix of energy sources and how this is shaped by our needs. The Energy Wall features seven core stores of energy including chemical, mechanical, thermal, electrical, magnetic, kinetic and gravitational. Visitors to the OPITO Theatre of Energy can see their body take on the properties of each store.

ACVO News 13 April 2023

Finally, the Energy Game challenges visitors to balance the energy supply to an imaginary Aberdeen City. The aim is to avoid blackouts and make sure less CO2 is released into the atmosphere. “Spring officially sprang on March 20 and we are delighted to unveil our new exhibits,” said Bryan Snelling, chief executive of Aberdeen Science Centre. “Moving around in zero gravity is a challenge that those operating in space have to deal with so the first of our new exhibits will challenge visitors to put their skills to the test and find out whether they can successfully manoeuvre a spaceship on to a docking station. “A slinky toy might be best known for turning somersaults down stairs. Our second new exhibit gives visitors to the centre a chance to see kinetic energy in action as they discover how the slinky behaves on a treadmill. “They can also play with speed of

NEWS

the treadmill and find out just how quickly the slinky can travel.” The OPITO Theatre of Energy is the UK’s first immersive experience of its kind and the interactive sessions showcase the wide variety of exciting opportunities that STEM subjects can lead to, says Bryan. “Just as gardeners have to nurture their bulbs and seeds in order for them to grow, the same can be said for young people and STEM. Giving young people the chance to explore the centre allows them to interact with hands on exhibits in a fun environment. This has an important role to play in unleashing their curiosity and nurturing what could be a lifelong love of science.” The centre’s exhibits are aimed at all ages and are themed into six zones: Energy; Space; Life Sciences; Make It, Test It; and the dedicated area for the under-6s, as well as the Shell Learning Zone,

where STEM topics are brought to life. Aberdeen Science Centre reopened to the public in November 2020 after a major project to create an aspirational science centre which reflects the STEM priorities for both industry and education. In January 2023 it was announced that Aberdeen Science Centre was one of 13 Aberdeen projects to be awarded funding by the Just Transition Fund, distributed by ACVO. Aberdeen Science Centre was awarded £39,500; the money will help to fund an electric vehicle that will house an interactive climate change exhibit. To mark International Women's Day, Save the Children UK has announced Danielle Flecher-Horn, founder of AberNecessities, as one of their 'cost of living champions'

AberNecessities is a proudly female-led organisation that brings together the local community to support families facing extreme financial hardship and we are determined to succeed in our work for change - because No Child Should Go Without.

Driven by her experience as a teacher, and as a mother, Danielle founded AberNecessities, working to support low-income household with basic essentials that no child should go without. Danielle and her team work with a vast network of professionals across the NHS, social work and education to support families with items such as nappies and formula to clothing, bedding and equipment for children up to 18

years. Since its launch in 2019, AberNecessities has supported over 10,000 children. Save the Children UK has worked on a photo series of women across the country supporting their communities in the cost of living crisis to mark this year's International Women's Day (Wednesday 8th of March). important, for every family, for better mental health, your journey through motherhood, they're absolutely priceless. We're gifting those moments to other families. I am very proud to be a woman. I feel very proud to work with and for women and AberNecessities is a proudly women-led organisation which champions female

empowerment. We're strong, our bodies do amazing things. When we look at our children, we need to empower each other and make each other feel good about the fact that we've brought another life into the world. Read Danielle's and the other 'cost of living champion's full stories here.

By providing basic essentials to a family we alleviate some financial pressure, meaning they can put the heating on for a bit longer, or can cook a warm meal. Our goal and hope is to remove barriers so that a child is able to have the best start possible; to grow, develop and thrive. What keeps me going is the end result; a child opening a pack and that smile, that excitement, and that sense of relief a parent is getting. Moments like that are so

Homeless charity Shelter Scotland celebrates the opening of their new office in Aberdeen City David Cameron, Lord Provost of Aberdeen and ACVO Board Member, officially opened the charity's new office on Friday 3rd March. The base will provide brand new facilities for Shelter Scotland’s housing advisors, community organisers and volunteers who work to support individual clients and groups in Aberdeen. At the opening event, conversations were raised amongst the attendees surrounding Scotland’s Housing Emergency, and how the charity aims to tackle homelessness in the city. Gillian Reid-McKee, Assistant Director of Shelter Scotland, expressed that the new office will

represent the charity’s ethos of defending the right to a safe home for everyone. The event also provided a platform for Sarah, who delivered a speech sharing her lived experience as a homeless person, and her involvement in the charity’s services. Following the event, Iona Rennie, Community Manager of Shelter Scotland (North), said “I am really motivated and encouraged by the positive relationships held that will allow us to work together in

addressing the Housing Emergency. It will be the collective effort in looking at early intervention and enforcing rights that will see us work towards homelessness as a last resort, less families in temporary accommodation, and more people in safe affordable accommodation.” The new office is situated on 29 Crown Street, Aberdeen, AB11 6HA. Kind-hearted 7- and 8-year old’s raise funds for Aberdeen Cyrenians The Aberdeen charity has praised two young people for their valiant efforts in raising awareness and money to support socially excluded people in the North-East.

A

berdeen Cyrenians supports people in crisis who are affected by homelessness, poverty, abuse, addiction, mental ill-health, and complex needs. Their services offer help and compassion to some of the most vulnerable and socially excluded people in our community. Although the boys have never met, they have both described why they decided to donate and raise money for Aberdeen Cyrenians in strikingly similar circumstances. It was through walking in Aberdeen and seeing homeless people asking for spare money that both set out to make a change. Cael, 8 who donated £75 and food to the charity and hand delivered the donations to Aberdeen Cyrenians Direct Access Service said: “A few years ago, I saw a homeless man on the street in Aberdeen and I went up to speak to him. His name was Dave, he was really nice and even guessed my age. I bought him food and water and gave him some money. I wanted to help homeless people because it must be cold to not have a home and being hungry isn’t nice. And I thought well if I can give some money then that

would help people. I want to help people.” Cammy, 7, who originally set himself the challenge of cycling 20 miles in Aberdeenshire, has exceeded his initial £100 target by 1150%. Cammy delivered the funds to the charity’s warehouse on Union Glen. On why he chose to fundraise for Aberdeen Cyrenians, Cammy reflected: “I was walking down Union Street and a few times people asked us for spare change. I kept thinking about the homeless people. I asked my mum if we could give a homeless man some money and we decided that I should try and raise money. I like riding my bike and that’s why I chose to ride 20 miles, but I ended up doing 40!”

Jennifer McAughtrie, Head of Services, Aberdeen Cyrenians said: “We are delighted that both Cael and Cammy are involved in supporting vulnerable people in our community. To see the younger generation having such awareness and compassion and making the choice to be actively involved in creating change for socially excluded people, donating money, and setting up fundraisers is simply amazing. We are so lucky to have young people like Cael and Cammy taking an interest in the social issues affecting our community. Thank you so much for your support.” To find out how you can make a difference for socially excluded people visit the Aberdeen Cyrenians website at weareac.org

A spotlight on In-Trans: a translation service from Grampian Regional Equality Council

GREC’s interpreting and translation service, In-trans, has been running for 17 years,

Words by:

Dave Black, General Manager Grampian Regional Equality Council

Find out more about In-Trans at

in-trans.co.uk

having first been established to support NHS Grampian with an increased number of patients with limited English. Since then, In-Trans has grown to deliver thousands of interpreting and translation jobs every year, for the public, private and third sector. In a sector that is surprisingly unregulated, we are really proud of the work that we continue to do develop a service with extremely high standards, e.g. an external oral and written assessment for community interpreters (i.e. those without a formal qualification) that we work with. We are also very passionate about offering training and development opportunities to the interpreters that we work with (over 120 speaking 54 languages).

In the past 5 years we have had more and more feedback from interpreters about the mental health impact of the work that they are doing, including secondary trauma caused by involvement in distressing causes, e.g. involving end-of-life situations gender-based violence, complex mental health cases, and working with people who have fled torture and war-torn countries. As a result of these discussions, and as an organisation we became more aware of trauma-informed practice, In-Trans’ Coordinator, Rosilda Panoni, started to explore these issues with two of GREC’s most experienced counsellors (Riitta Jutila and Tuck-Chee Phung). With an initial small pot of funding from NHS Grampian’s Equality and Diversity team, and later a grant from NHS Grampian’s Endowment Fund, we have been steadily developing an approach that provides more awareness and support for the interpreters that we work with.

News 25 ACVO April 2023

We initially held workshops with our counsellors, Riitta and Tuck-Chee, where we further explored these issues, and what improvements interpreters felt would be helpful. Some of these were more practical things, e.g. more information on what to expect when attending an appointment, whilst others suggesting having someone to speak to about their experiences would be very helpful. One significant barrier we faced though is the very sensitive and confidential nature of the information the interpreters are exposed to, and getting the balance between offering a space to speak, and data protection concerns, has been paramount in our thoughts as we have developed this project. We turned to a very experienced professional, Beverley Costa, founder and director of the Pasola Project who “create project-specific responses and solutions for psychological health and social care issues across languages”. Beverley has undertaken a range of research and

projects that explore the intersection between counselling, mental health, bilingualism and interpreting. With Beverley, and our counselling team, we piloted a peer support model for interpreters. This involved a selection of our more experienced interpreters being trained as facilitators to lead peer support groups. These group sessions gave interpreters the space to share the impact of the work that they’d been undertaking, in a way that retained confidential and appropriate boundaries, but allowed other interpreters with similar experiences, to empathise and share ideas and solutions. Group facilitators receive regular supervision from our experienced counsellors, allow them to allow develop and improve their approach. We are extremely proud of the support model that we’ve developed with our volunteers and partners at GREC. We believe this is a unique approach to

Scotland, and that In-Trans is in many ways leading the way in an ethical approach to interpreting and translation. The project has been covered in a range of recent publications, including The Interpreting Academy Newsletter, The Linguist (the magazine of the The Chartered Institute of Linguists) and the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy’s Therapy Today journal. We are also excited by the idea of trying out the model within other third sector settings, for example, with frontline workers experiencing secondary trauma, and are keen to here from organisations who would like to explore a partnership around this approach.

At the same time, their families are enabled to have a crucial break to recharge and refresh their batteries enabling them to maintain the high level of support their children need when they return home from their short break. The Hub also provides holistic family support through a menu of services that support and complement direct support offered to children and young people.
