Known as the “prettiest village in Maine,” Wiscasset was settled in 1663 on the banks of the Sheepscot River. Due to its deep harbor, Wiscasset was once the largest working harbor east of Boston as a bustling shipbuilding center and lumber port. Today, the harbor is home to local fishermen and recreational boaters and the final resting place since 1932 for the four-masted schooners the Hesper and the Luther Little, whose remains are currently being salvaged. Visitors to Wiscasset can stroll the pleasant brick sidewalks and find many antique shops, art galleries, fine stores and restaurants. Other attractions include handsome sea captains’ homes, the Powder House (1812), the Lincoln County Courthouse (1824), Castle Tucker (1807), the old Lincoln County Jail (1809), and the Customs House (1870). If you didn’t get to see Wiscasset Village’s wonderful sunken garden opposite the Nickels-Sortwell House—take an extra few minutes and enjoy it’s beauty. u
