charlie ♥ walker With the passion of Damien Rice and the tranquil energy of Jack Johnson, Charlie Walker’s soulful ballads take you to a place that most artists never go. He has blended elements of blues, reggae, soul, and acoustic pop that keeps your ears open and your toes tapping. From childhood to now, Walker has never forgotten that making music comes from the heart. His passion and soulfulness are evident, as he will inevitably leave you wanting more. Blending elements of blues, soul, organic simplicity, and a heart felt connection with his audience, Charlie Walker’s energy/ charisma will undoubtedly touch you. Active Nightlife 9
How would you describe your sound? I would describe it as a blend of blues, soul and acoustic pop … if I could be so bold. Are you a Jacksonville native? Nope. I bounced about a bit. I was born in Urbana, Ohio and stayed there till the age of 6. I lived in Greenwood, SC [then to] Ocala, Florida at around 10 years old. At 23 I moved to Jax Beach, bounced out to St. Augustine, moved back, and have been here since. I know you do solo acts as well as the Carlie Walker Band. Do you prefer playing by yourself or in a band? I don’t have a preference as long as there is a good vibe with the crowd. I’m playing for the people. However I connect with them, it doesn’t matter just as long as I connect. That can be with or without a band. How does your individual act differ from your band show? When I play as a solo musician, I generally play more mellow songs. Probably the songs, I would say, I put more of my soul into. I wouldn’t say the energy level is necessarily lower, I’d just say it is more personal. When I play with the band, we are all focussing on the music as a whole. We are conscious of our timing, our layers, our dynamics and so on. As a team, we play together and individually we gain less attention, but as a whole, we generally gain more. I honestly feel like I have the privilege of playing with some of the best musicians in Jacksonville. Those musicians being: Johnny Flood, Will Neal and Jutti Mandel. If you could do a duet with anyone, famous or not, dead or alive, who would it be and why? Justin Nozuka. He said we would do a song together someday. I am going to hold him to that. He has got the most organic and soulful voice I think I have ever heard from a 19-year-old dude. What are your top 5 favorite CD’s ever? Jack Johnson(In Between Dreams), Damien Rice (9), Brett Dennen (So Much More), Dave Matthews (Live at Luther College), Justin Nozuka (Holly).

Aquarius (January 21 to February 19) You have been doing a lot of processing of your feelings lately, and this month represents a continuation. You are drawn to security and may need the help of significant others in your life to ground more firmly into reality your visionary and expansive ideals. It’s all part of getting connected with the big picture. Pisces (February 20 to March 20) You feel caught between expansion of your contacts with others, and other quite different feelings of limitation and pulling back. Bring intimate sharing with significant others into the picture, and ask the question, do I want my values represented or someone else’s? Aries (March 21 to April 20) You are on a roller-coaster ride of positive self-expression and abundance. Always charging full speed ahead, february 2011 you must sometimes run into a wall. But these days you bounce right back.
Taurus (April 21 to May 21) You are something of a mystery these days. You stand behind and off to the side from the face you show the world. But you are full of dreams and visions, especially this month. Gemini (May 22 to June 21) You just love to network and you’ve had plenty of opportunity for that lately. You also may feel pulled back inside yourself these days, since you are going through a recollection period. Cancer (June 22 to July 22) Sweet and sensitive is really working for you these days, especially on the job. You may feel torn between your public persona and the stay-at-home side of Active Nightlife 17
your personality, but you can inhabit both sides. Leo (July 23 to August 21) You will soon be reminded that communication holds the key to connecting with those ideas of travel or perhaps philosophical issues that you have been on your mind lately. On the job you may be feeling both enthused and somewhat stuck. Time to break out of the box! Virgo (August 22 to September 23) Forthright romantic communication lights the way for you this month. The question is whose resources are being developed, yours or your partner’s, or someone else’s? Libra (September 24 to October 23) You are quite full of romantic thoughts and feelings as creative intimacy propels you forward. When push comes to shove, there are some limitations to overcome, but your progress is an upward spiral. Scorpio (October 24 to November 22) You might feel yourself caught between the lows and the highs of it all this month. You may be tempted to pull back into retreat mode, but next month brings you right back into the action. Sagittarius (November 23 to December 22) Ideals of service and realizations of your limits are simultaneously springing forth in your psyche these days. Meanwhile your mental process and artistic creativity are truly amazing to behold. There may be some setbacks, but nothing can hold you down for long! Capricorn (December 23 to January 20) Home and family are a source of both mental and aesthetic delight these days. As you struggle to ground your creative vision in practical reality, you will feel more energy for this process as something deep inside yourself is changing. Go public with it as well as to enjoy the fruits of your labors in the peace and tranquility. 18 Active Nightlife

diana’sdish your monthly serving Back to the Shore!
America’s biggest guilty pleasure, JERSEY SHORE, is back on MTV for its third season! The GTL cast is back on the shores of Jersey and the show has had everyone’s attention since the first episode. Not even two minutes in, the audience could already note that the roommates must have gotten a hefty pay raise. JWoww, Snooki, and Ronnie all arrived at the Jersey house in flashy BMWs while the MVP trio, (Mike “The Situation”), Mercedes (Vinny), and Cadillac (Pauly D), showed up in a Range Rover. Drama has already begun and the new roomie, Deena, who replaced Angelina, has fit right in. Latest rumors are that Sammi and Ronnie have called it quits but we all know that Ill probably have to report next month that they’re back on! Can’t get enough Jersey Shore once a week? A Shore Thing by Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi is a new fiction novel about two cousins who set off to spend the summer on the Jersey Shore – one is pint size and the other is tall and slender…hmm sound familiar?? Quote of the month definitely goes to Snooki on the Ellen show promoting her book, “I want to remember my night and sometimes I just don’t. It sucks. So you’re like what did I do? Why did I wake up in a garbage can?” Ahh – Welcome back, Jersey Shore. Active Nightlife 23

Fresh off the celebrations of his engagement with 24-year-old playmate, Crystal Harris, Hugh Hefner has another reason to toast to 2011! Hefner has taken back control of Playboy. The 84-year-old will spend $207 million to buy out the stockholders, giving him more control of his company that he founded over 50 years ago. Hefner intends to pass control of Playboy down to his two sons. TMZ featured 21-year-old son, Marston, celebrating the announcement at STK in Vegas with a pretty lady – and he looks just like his dad!

Since Rihanna and Los Angeles Dodgers star Matt Kemp called it quits, she’s been busy promoting her album. Currently collaborating with rap star, Nicki Minaj, the two went on a sexy lesbian hookup tweet rampage. They’re on set filming for their new single together, “Fly”, and have been staying together. After tweeting a photo of them, Rihanna posted, “Me and Nikki in our new crib, lol! Gettin busy on set of FLY!!! Its so hard to keep my hands off!” Nicki responded with, “@ rihanna lol. If we’re gonna liv 2gthr and hook up u gotta learn how 2 spell my name! Lmaooooooo. The tweets were all in good fun. Simmer down boys – keep dreaming!
Date Justin Bieber & Die?
Disney star Selena Gomez recently went public about her boyfriend through photos of a Caribbean vacay with 16-year-old Justin Bieber. The couple denied dating rumors but photos of the two exchanging tender kisses and booty grabs has confirmed the romance. Although it may be sweet puppy love, 18-year-old Selena is getting the heat for dating younger Justin. She has been the target of constant death threats on her Twitter, @selenagomez. A hacker found a way to break into her Facebook account and posted multiple statuses and messages to many of her fans. Tough price you pay for dating the boy that causes Bieber Fever.
Pink and husband, Carey Hart, announced their pregnancy a couple months ago and the baby bump is now in full effect! The couple was spending time in Hawaii and the 31-year-old was shining with maternal glow. She is due sometime in May. This will be their first child. Vets to parenthood, Britain’s “It” couple are expecting AGAIN! David Beckham took to his Facebook with, “I’ve got some great news to tell you all. Victoria and I are expecting our fourth child this summer. The boys are very excited about the arrival of a new brother or sister.” Posh Spice and the sexy athlete have three boys – Cruz, Romeo, and Brooklyn. Word is Victoria is hoping to have a baby girl this time. And remember couple Kate Hudson and Owen Wilson? Although they are exes now, they are both expecting parents with their significant others. Owen Wilson is expecting his first child with girlfriend, Jade Duell. Kate Hudson, who already has a 7-year-old son, will be welcoming a child with boyfriend, Muse band frontman, Matthew Bellamy.

ASK AN ATTORNEY Q: I have previously purchased K3, which is sold as 'incense' at the local tobacco store. I enjoy smoking it because it relaxes me and i am able to focus on getting things done (though I do crave cupcakes afterwards). In any event, I went to the shop the other day because I was out, but the guy behind the counter said they no longer could sell it to me. Also, my buddy told me the stuff is now illegal. What's the deal?
First, please know that I cannot recommend that you smoke or use the 'incense' or any substance in any particular manner; I am no doctor. It sounds to me that you are talking about something called 'synthetic marijuana'. The 'incense' and similar products were previously legally sold in different places. However, the Food and Drug Active Nightlife 27
Administration recently changed the law involving controlled substances to include 'synthetic marijuana'. The government has now made it illegal to sell the stuff for at least one year. That is most likely why your local shop no longer sells it. However, your buddy was not totally right. The federal controlled substances regulations do not address the possession of 'incense'. So, it is illegal to sell but not illegal to possess, although the Florida legislature is considering legislation to make it illegal to possess. Now, did someone say something about cupcakes...? As always, stay safe and always keep your attorney on speed dial. Very truly yours,

Michelle Axtell reveals secrets from around the world
CHILE Chilean women credit the antioxidant powers of red grapes for their luminous skin. They create a paste by mashing up a handful of grapes and adding 2 tablespoons of white flour. They then apply the mask to their face and leave it on for 10 minutes before washing it off. “It wakes up the appearance of tired and fatigued skin to give you an amazing glow,” says Shalini Vadhera, author of Passport to Beauty. Dominican Republic Women in the Dominican Republic swear by garlic to keep their nails super strong! They chop up fresh garlic, add it to a bottle of clear nail polish and let it stew for 7 to 10 days. There will be an initial smell, but the scent goes away. Garlic has many strengthening properties and is naturally antibacterial as well. Egypt It has been said that Cleopatra’s beauty secret was taking milk baths to soften her skin and remove dead cells. Try the treatment at home by adding 2 cups of powdered milk to your bath. It will make your skin look absolutely gorgeous and feel so smooth and silky.

France “The French woman sticks to a scrupulous and preventive skin and body care routine,” says Shannon Gallogly, lead aesthetician for French beauty brands Decleor and Carita. “This means she has weekly facials, regular massages and religiously takes her makeup off each night.” Gallogly’s recipe for an at-home facial without the price tag of a spa version: Mash up cherries and pomegranate seeds and apply as a mask to the skin for about 6 minutes. “This mask will help brighten skin with natural enzymes while firming at the same time.” Remove the mixture with a warm towel to help boost circulation.
Israel Women in Israel believe in the healing powers of sea salt. “When you swim in the Dead Sea, all of the salt helps your body rid itself of toxins, and it has also been known to help cure skin diseases.” To get the detoxifying benefits of sea salt at home, try this Lavender Sea Salt Scrub recipe: Mix together ¼ cup sea salt, 1 pinch seaweed powder, ½ cup massage oil and 10 to 15 drops lavender oil. Apply to skin to gently exfoliate. Italy How do Italian women maintain their glossy locks? Italian women keep their hair shiny by combining yogurt and olive oil and using the mixture as a conditioner. “The protein in the yogurt gently nourishes and conditions.” To whip up the rich treatment at home, mix 1 cup of plain whole-milk yogurt with 1 teaspoon olive oil. Then apply the mixture to washed hair, let it sit for 5 minutes and rinse with cool water.

Japan It has been said that seaweed can be credited for Japanese women’s long, silky hair. Nori is a rich source of the trace mineral iodine, which is essential for healthy hair growth. Seaweed is also a rich source of other mane-strengthening minerals—including iron, zinc, selenium and copper. “Japanese women either eat nori seaweed or boil it and apply it to dry hair as a nourishing paste.” You can head to your local Asian grocer or health food store to pick up sheets of nori. Sweden Swedish women attribute their glowing, healthy skin to their diet of antioxidant-packed fresh berries and grilled fish. Give yourself a hit of antioxidants by trying an at-home treatment: Boil mineral water with a green tea or white tea bag, let the tea infuse the water and then freeze it into ice cubes to use instead of a toner. Saunas are also a big part of Swedish culture. The dry, clean heat rids your body of toxins. To get the effect of a sauna at home, take a handful of rock salt and add a dash of olive oil and about 10 drops of pure eucalyptus oil. Rub it all over your body and rinse with a blast of cold water.

Hair Myths The Truth Behind Your Locks
It is always good to know the facts from myths when it comes to hair care. Hair is one of the most important parts of what makes each person look unique. We spend a lot of time and money on our hair so let’s get to the ROOT of the story. To wash or not to wash? One of the biggest debates pertaining to hair care is the ideal number of washes in a week. If you feel the need to wash your hair everyday then do so—nobody looks cute with a greasy head. Some believe that washing too frequently will dry out your hair, but in most cases this is not true. With the right shampoo your hair should be lustrous and soft. Overcoloring, swimming in chlorine pools or the ocean and flat ironing without a heat protector will be your worse enemy for dry hair—not the washing part. I have found that washing every other day is the best way to maintain your color and keeping your locks looking their best. Also, just because you have long hair doesn’t mean that you have to use half a bottle every time you shampoo. You’ll never achieve better results 32 Active Nightlife
by using extra shampoo while washing. A quarter size should work just fine. But always keep in mind the type of product you are using. Professional salon products will always be more concentrated than store bought brands. Diluting the product it will help distribute better throughout the hair. Store bought brands are already diluted so you will end up actually using up that product faster. Regardless of the brand of your shampoo, if your product doesn’t seem to be lathering it means you have waited too long to shampoo! Another hair care myth is that cutting your hair will make your hair grow thicker. This is false! A person with thin hair should wear their hair in a short hair style to give the allusion of plumper hair. It’s the actual hair style that makes it look thicker not the actual act of cutting the hair. The upper portion of the hair is always thicker because of the “newbie” hair growth replacing the hair that we all lose. So when you get a hair cut it always seems thicker for the next couple weeks. Another reason is that you are “severing ties” with those nasty split ends which also make your appear thinner and stringy on the ends. To maintain that amazing hairstyle you should be getting a hair cut every four weeks for the shorter hair styles and six to eight weeks for the medium to long lengths. If you are thinking of growing out your hair, your regular salon visits should take place every ten to twelve weeks. This will keep your hair and style up to date with the latest trends.
Active Nightlife 33
I don’t know how many times a day I have a client in my chair say, “I’m going bald, what can I do?” And every time I tell them this exact answer. On average a person should lose up to 100 strands of hair a day, so don’t freak out every time you clean out the shower drain. It’s when you start having bald spots (and not because of extensions fall out) that you should probably go see your doctor. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle will go a long way in keeping your hair strong and lustrous. In fact, a well balanced diet can actually increase the growth. I sometimes suggest to clients who want a faster reaction to take prenatal vitamins. By taking them you are only pumping extra vitamins such as iron into your body. So if you won’t eat healthy and exercise regularly for yourself, do it so you can have fabulous hair. Smoking and stress are top villians for both hair loss and going grey prematurely. Take care of yourself and your hair will thank you.

All week I’ve been hearing, “Dan, what’s the best pre-workout supplement on the market?” Well guys, there really no “best” supplement. Selecting a supplement is like finding the right tool for the job. For example, if you’re trying to lose body fat, you don’t want anything with creatine. Time and time again women tell me they are taking Jacked 3D and they are gaining weight. Well, the reason this is happening is because Jacked 3D contains creatine and will super hydrate the muscles causing the dramatic increase in weight. Each product has a specific purpose, so without further wait let’s talk about a few of my favorites that will help you reach your workout goal.
Active Nightlife 45
d-fine 8 is more of a fat burner than anything. D-fine 8 is a natural combination of b vitamins, niacin, amino’s and c.l.a. which helps target stored body fat in the abdomen. The great thing about it is that it gives you a solid amount of energy without a crash. It contains no creatine which is why women trying to burn fat without gaining additional muscle should use this pre-workout. 1.m.r. is one of my personal favorite products right now. It gives you a great energy surge without the crash and lasts for about three hours. This product is a potent muscle builder that contains l-Argentine, creatine, beta-alanine. It will give you more repetitions on every set! Its main drawback is there’s no glutamine, nitric-oxide in the formula, but with a low price point, 1.m.r can be easily stacked with no3zcg9 by MuscleWorks. This is my ultimate pre workout stack that will have you adding mass fast! Gunpowder is another great muscle builder. The Gunpowder has an awesome combination of glutamine, beta-alanine, creatine matrix and nitric-oxide. This is an awesome combo! its a very strong formula so try half serving if your a beginner.

ELITE FITNESS How to get for ladies Flat Abs by Noha Soliman
In order to get a flat and tight tummy, you need to reduce body fat through a calorie-reduced nutrition program, incorporate strength training (2-3 days per week) and cardiovascular exercise (3-5 days per week for at least 30 minutes) to stimulate the metabolism. select food wisely You can’t eat 4,000 calories a day and get great abs, but it’s not just about the calorie count when it comes to a flat stomach — it’s also about the food. A diet of nutrient-rich foods is going to keep you fuller longer, reducing your cravings and giving you more energy, 48 Active Nightlife
compared to the same number of calories of less nutritious food, which will help you on your road to a better body, Eat more Fruits & vegetables According to a recent review from Copenhagen University Hospital, the best way to whittle down your waist is to replace carbohydrates from sugar and refined grains (like white bread) with carbs from fruits and vegetables. Orangehued foods were found to be the most effective substitutes. Since fruits and vegetables are high in fiber, they keep you feeling full longer and researchers believe the high levels of antioxidants like vitamin C and beta-carotene fend off the belly fat. Get a good dose of beta-carotene from carrots, cantaloupe, squash and peaches. You can get your vitamin C from oranges and berries, but remember that fruit juice is not a good substitute for the real thing. Fish You have to eat good fat if you want to lose the bad fats. Eating good fats like monounsaturated and omega-3s make it easier to stay slim. Lean protein Protein helps to keep you feeling full and boost your energy, aiding in your weight-loss efforts. According to research from Skidmore College and Copenhagen University Hospital, eating additional protein is especially helpful for those over 40 in reducing abdominal fat.

Drink more Water There is some people believe that drinking too much water will give them puffy abs, but just the opposite is true. ‘Even though we associate water with being bloated, drinking more water can help to flush sodium out of the body, and that reduces the bloat,

♥ George Strait, Reba McEntire & Lee Ann Womack gave the crowd a country music night to remember with 4 hours of music, 58 songs in all. The show kicked off with Lee Ann Womack. From the opening “Strains of Last Call“ to he loving ballad “I Hope You Dance“ her performance said simply: This is Lee Ann Womack—This is Country Music. Reba McEntire truly is the Queen of Country Music and was definitely a show stopper. She pulled out all the stops during her 90 minute performance and brought the audience to their feet several times. During “Does He Love You” the crowd was treated when Womack took the stage for a virtual sing off. The two captured the tension of the song and the crowd was moved and gave a standing ovation. Reba ended with an encore, her signature song “Fancy.” Reminiscent of the 1991 music video, Reba was driven to the stage in a yellow a taxi cab. The song brought down the house and left the crowd invigorated and satisfied. The redheaded songstress stole the show highlighting her hits and her natural magnetism and Okie Charm. Dressed in red shirts to support our troops, George Strait and his Ace in the Hole Band cranked out hit after hit. King George proved he still has a golden voice and a great gift for song interpretation with “Amarillo by Morning,” “The Chair” and the ultimate romantic ballad “I Cross my Heart.” He shared the song that his son Bubba wrote: “Arkansas Dave” and sang it like a proud dad. Strait, in his jeans and cowboy hat, displayed sheer star power, charisma and a killer smile as he delivered hit after hit. It was a fun, entertaining and amazing night of the best of country music. Fans of all ages sang and danced and enjoyed the evening at the Veterans Memorial Arena. 62 Active Nightlife

Time Out Sports Bar & Grill remains a local favorite among those who enjoy an ENDLESS Happy Hour, seven days a week! The daily specials include a large variety to meet everyone’s thirst-quenching satisfaction. As a sports bar, they have fulfilled their Game Day duty by providing 16 generously sized flat screen TV’s. Your choice of extracurricular activites exceeds the likes of an arcade with Official Beer Pong Pro tables available for personal party use.
Each day a different special is featured: Monday kicks off your week with $5 pitchers. Tuesday features the All Day Happy Hour with ½ off draft beer & house wine…10 PM to close offers trouble with 2-41 shots, wells, & calls. Wednesday treats the Ladies to a Night of $1 wines, cocktails, & drafts. Thursday throws a fiesta with $2 Coronas, $4 Loaded Coronas (a single-shot of tequila added to your cerveza), and a Jager Bomb special, in case the tequila didn’t do the trick. Friday proves to attract the largest crowd w/ the infamous $5 Long Island iced tea pitchers—poured with six individual ingredients as opposed to the overused “pre-made” method. Saturday and Sunday offers $3 Mimosas and Bloody Marys throughout the day. Top off the weekend with 3 Olive & Crown Royal specials. Good specials, good menu, & good service are always accompanied by a generous splash of a good time at Time Out. Closing Note…ATTENTION venues: a $4 domestic draft brew should never be associated with the term “Happy Hour.” Bottoms Up—Adam Brice Crump
