trend of growth. My biggest challenge is getting over the need to control everything in my life. My goal is to work toward focusing on what I can control, while not getting caught up in the things I can’t. Easier said than done for someone like me, but I’m going to keep trying. When you make your New Year’s Resolutions this year, try to get out of the “fixer” mindset. Don’t approach your goals as things you need to fix about yourself. You’re not broken. With this mindset, no version of yourself will ever be good enough. Meaningful change comes from a growth mindset. Let your desire to be the best version of yourself be so strong that you can’t help but succeed. Break your big goals into smaller ones. Be realistic. Be specific. Find accountability from an outside source if necessary. Hire a nutrition coach or registered dietitian. Find a personal trainer you really like. These are investments in yourself.

Keep in mind, meaningful change takes time. This is the first year I’ve felt like I kind of actually have it sort of figured out. Part of figuring it out for me has been acknowledging “it” is always evolving. This year I was forced to reevaluate my goals and strategies. I was faced with some health issues that I was determined to address with lifestyle instead of doctors or medicine. It meant changing my workouts and at times backing off exercise completely. It meant cleaning up my diet even more. But these changes worked and now I’m healthier and stronger and able to do the workouts I want to do and live the life I want to live with my family and friends. This year I finally see the big picture. I started working out and dieting when I was 14. I just turned 33. It’s been nearly 20 years of work to undo a lot of bad habits and change how I view myself. It might not take you that long, but it’s OK if it does.
