Fort Devens Museum’s monthly program for visitors on Saturday, December 15, at 1 p.m. focuses on one Shirley family’s efforts to create a “home away from home” for soldiers at Camp Devens training to take their place on the field of action in France during World War I. Ayer with its railroad hub and bustling downtown drew soldiers to a number of service clubs and canteens quickly set up there to offer hospitality, a sense of home, and a boost to morale. The history of this concerted effort on behalf of servicemen has been generally made known. However, in the adjacent town of Shirley efforts were made also to create homey, friendly places for the crowds of soldiers assigned to Camp Devens with off-duty time but no way or means of getting anywhere near their own families’ homes. Now a recent publication has brought to light the story of one family’s making a longtime commitment to provide a 24-7 informal canteen in their own home. The book Water

for Soldiers: New England Villages Answer the Call in World War tells of one of Shirley’s institutions created to enhance soldiers’ wellbeing and dispel loneliness. The home offering water for soldiers marching by and much more can be seen still on Parker Road at Shirley Center, looking much as it did over 100 years ago, located quite near the common on which soldiers drilled. Thinking to help the lot of the common soldiers were Frank Lawton and his daughter, Shirley, along with Anna, Frank’s wife and Shirley’s mother. It is Shirley who later in life wrote down her reminiscences, with a big assist from a logbook in which visitors wrote their names and unit numbers and commented on their times at the Lawton house. In her manuscript Shirley Lawton Houde (Married after the war) gave her impressions of Camp Devens being built. She described individual visitors the family had become friends with, many over extended time periods – at first those in training or instructing the

She described activities and entertainments at the home and local people who joined them to meet the soldiers. Telling the Lawtons’ story on December 15th will be Paul Przybyla, a retired Fidelity Bank executive and Shirley resident active in the Shirley Historical Society. He will describe also the story of how this fascinating, many-faceted manuscript came to be dusted off and finally given a well-

deserved place in print for a wide audience. The Fort Devens Museum is located on the third floor of 94 Jackson Road, Devens, MA. The museum will be open from 10 AM to 3 PM on this day and the program is free and open to the public.

A new University of Phoenix® survey found that 28 percent of respondents reported they were not confident that their current math skills are strong enough to succeed in planning for retirement and 24 percent stated they are not confident in their skills to succeed in understanding tuition assistance and save or pay for college. Additionally, 35 percent are not confident that their math skills were solid enough to start a business. Susan Hadley, Ph.D., program dean for general education at University of Phoenix, says that people could be taking a financial hit as a result of not understanding basic math and the role it plays in financial decision making. “Having a foundational knowledge of math helps people make informed purchases for major investments and expenses as well as everyday spending and saving decisions,” Dr. Hadley said. “Being comfortable with math is necessary and deeply relevant to our personal and professional lives. As a result, we’ve gone to great lengths to incorporate math into our undergraduate programs as it relates to everyday financial decisions.” Dr. Hadley provides financial

action unlimited tips for areas where math skills are important: 1. Building a budget—A monthly budget helps allot money for fixed expenses like mortgage payments as well as how to plan for expenses that may vary from month to month, such as groceries. Also knowing how much to dedicate each month for longterm savings is helpful. Having this information can set the stage for making wise spending choices. 2. Renting vs. buying a home—There is no one-size-fitsall answer on whether to purchase a home or rent. Research the real estate market in the area where you want to live. Determine the

Buying a car—People often assume that a vehicle is an investment. However, vehicles quickly depreciate. Be mindful of how much you are able to spend, financing options and, if you decide to take a loan to make the purchase, what you will pay in interest over the life of the loan. 4. Top Tips For Buying Safe Toys by Joan Lawrence (NAPSI)—For happier holidays with your family, here are answers to parents’ most frequently asked questions about toy safety: Q. How do I pick out safe toys? A. Choose a toy that matches your child’s age and interests. Always follow the age grading on toy packaging and be sure to keep toys labeled 3+ away from children under 3. These toys may contain small parts, which are a choking hazard. Q. Are certain toy brands safer

than others? A. All toys sold in the U.S. must comply with strict federal safety standards. So when you shop at a reputable retailer, you can feel confident that the toys sold in the establishment are safe. Q. Is it safe to buy a toy from a seller I’m not familiar with? A. Whether online or in person, shop only at retailers you know and trust. Store staff at established businesses will be knowledgeable about the toys on their shelves and websites. Exercise caution when buying toys at flea markets, garage sales and unknown online sellers, as these vendors may not be monitoring for recalled products.

Q. How do I find out if a toy has been recalled? A. Only 0.003 percent of the 3 billion toys sold each year are recalled. Stay informed by visiting for a current list of recalled products. Q. What’s your last piece of advice for parents? A. Always supervise your children at play and demonstrate the correct way to use a toy or game. For more tips on toy safety,

Protect Our Environment YearRound—Here’s How (NAPSI)—Invasive pests threaten to destroy the forests and crops that beautify our lives and put food on our tables. Fortunately, no matter the season, you can take simple steps to help stop the spread of these damaging, non-native insects and other species. The USDA has identified 19 destructive “Hungry Pests,” the invasive species that people are most likely to spread accidentally. While Hungry Pests often arrive through commercial trade, members of the public can unknowingly spread them once they are here. But by learning a few simple actions, you help to protect so much that we value. In fact, you could decide to take just two actions each season of the year and make a huge difference! Spring As you come out to enjoy the warming days, invasive pests are also becoming more active. April is Invasive Plant Pest and Disease Awareness Month and a good time to learn the signs of these pests

and how you can help stop their spread. When buying plants, buy from dealers—including those online or “pop-up” vendors— who follow USDA regulations to ensure plants are free of invasive pests. If you live in the northeast part of the country, look for gypsy moth egg masses on patio furniture and other outdoor items. Carefully remove and dunk them in warm, soapy water. Summer Planning to travel this summer? Bring back happy memories but leave plants and produce— and the Hungry Pests that may be infesting them—behind. If traveling in the United States, be sure to wash trailers, campers and even bikes that you have kept outdoors, before taking them elsewhere. Also, clean camping gear free of dirt that may hide pests. In August, Tree Check Month, protect your trees from invasive, tree-killing beetles. Look for dime-sized, round holes in your trees. They could be signs of the invasive Asian longhorned beetle. If you see any holes, report them to local agricultural officials. Fall Enjoy campfires and roasting

s’mores in the crisp, cool weather. But remember: If you move firewood to another area, you may also move invasive pests on or inside the wood. So buy or responsibly gather firewood near the place you plan to burn it. If you bring in the harvest from your garden, but you live in an area known to have invasive pests, please keep your homegrown plants and produce at home. Winter Take your mind off the cold and plan for your spring garden. When buying seeds online, take care to only buy from established sources that follow USDA’s regulations to keep plants pest-free. And please be careful when sending or receiv-

ing international gifts. Greenery, seeds, plants and citrus may be packing Hungry Pests. When it comes to protecting our country from invasive pests, you make all the difference. After Stroke Strikes, What Comes Next? American Stroke Association highlights importance of rehabilitation after a stroke this World Stroke Day (NAPSI)—The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, the world’s leading voluntary health organization devoted to fighting cardiovascular disease and stroke, wants stroke survivors to know that while life may be different after a stroke, rehabilitation can help them regain some independence, decrease chances of another stroke and provide new goals to work toward. Worldwide, stroke is the No. 2 cause of death and is a leading cause of long-term disability. Stroke is more disabling than it is fatal. However, stroke is largely beatable through highquality rehabilitation and patient support and implementation of the Association’s Rehabilitation Guidelines. “Rehabilitation is key to recovery after stroke,” said Olajide Williams, M.D., chief of staff of Neurology, associate professor of Clinical Neurology Columbia University Medical Center and an American Stroke Association volunteer. “But up to a third of people who have a stroke do not participate in a rehab program.” Stroke rehabilitation can help patients build their strength, capabilities and confidence, potentially regaining skills and returning to independent living. Rehab can also help patients better manage other conditions they have, which may affect daily living or their risk for a second stroke. “Stroke recovery begins the moment you suspect a stroke,” said Williams. “The sooner a person can be treated for stroke, the more likely he or she is to have a successful outcome.” He advises everyone to be ready to respond F.A.S.T. if they suspect a stroke. The acronym “F.A.S.T.” rep-

action unlimited resents the most common stroke warning signs and stands for: • Face Drooping—Does one side of the face droop or is it numb? Ask the person to smile. Is the person’s smile uneven? • Arm Weakness—Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward? • Speech Difficulty—Is speech slurred? Is the person unable to speak or hard to understand? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence, like “The sky is blue.” • Time to Call 9-1-1—If someone shows any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms go away, call 9-1-1 and get to a hospital immediately. (Tip: Check the time so you’ll know when the first symptoms appeared.) Education about F.A.S.T is a part of the American Stroke Association’s Together to End Stroke initiative, nationally sponsored by Medtronic. Together, the two organizations aim to help people to easily recognize the most common stroke warning signs to improve stroke outcomes. The American Heart

Association/American Stroke Association’s Together to End Stroke™ initiative, nationally sponsored by Kindred Rehabilitation Services, raises awareness that stroke is largely beatable through high-quality rehabilitation, patient support and implementation of the AHA/ ASA’s Stroke Rehabilitation and Recovery Guidelines. For more information and a full list of the stroke warning signs, visit www. WorldStrokeDay.

Fun By The Numbers Like puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your sudoku savvy to the test!

Here’s How It Works:

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Be A Hero—Mentor A Child (NAPSI)—Helping to turn a young life around may be simpler than many people realize. That’s because you can volunteer to be a mentor, share your life with a child and make a real difference. Children need someone to look up to, someone to whom they can confide their challenges and struggles. Why Be A Mentor Consider the statistics. On the one hand, one in four public high school children drop out before finishing school. On the other, young adults who were at-risk for falling off track but had a mentor are 55 percent more

saturday, december 8, 2018

likely to enroll in college. Yet, “by some estimates,” reports Dr. Phillip Levine, Professor of Economics at Wellesley College, “as many as nine million children have no caring adults in their lives.” By volunteering, you can be that role model. Your personal involvement, your love and care, can be the greatest gifts you can give a child. How to Be A Mentor Mentoring is the heart and soul of all the programs at Kars4Kids, a registered nonprofit Jewish organization which, together with Oorah, its sister charity—and over 1,650 volunteer mentors—helps thousands of children develop into produc-

tive members of the community. “With the help of experienced outreach counselors, available at any time for consultation and advice, mentors keep in close contact with their mentees, developing a relationship that lasts for years. They often become friends of the child’s whole family,” said Wendy Kirwan, Director of Marketing and Public Relations for Kars4Kids. Its “unique and inclusive year-round model helps kids with camp in the summer, after-school programs during the school year, and holiday packages and events, reaching out to families with support, guidance and tools to build a meaningful and wholesome family life,” she adds.

Summer and afterschool hours present excellent opportunities for developing life skills that are the foundation for a child’s future. By mentoring a child, you can help to instill universal values, stimulate the development of interpersonal competencies and bring out latent talents, interests and strengths.
