Richard Higgins’s Exhibit The Concord Free Public Library will host an exhibit of Richard Higgins’s photographs of trees November 2 through November 30. “An Eye for Trees, in Thoreau’s Concord and Today” was inspired by Thoreau’s way of seeing trees, according to Higgins, the author of Thoreau

and the Language of Trees, published last year by the University of California Press. He said that vision combined poetic insight with keen observation. The exhibit, in the art gallery on the second floor of the library, is free and open to the public. Most of the 35 photographs depict common trees in Concord and surrounding towns, similar to those Thoreau knew and loved. About a third of them

appeared in Higgins’s book. The majority are black and white, and Higgins said he took many of the photographs in winter, when snow and ice transform trees and disclose them anew. “If there’s an artistic aesthetic, it’s finding beauty in the familiar and ordinary—a skill he developed to a high degree,” said Higgins, a writer, editor and lecturer. “The delicate gold bark of yellow birches in Estabrook Woods meant more to him, he said, than the gold nuggets miners were rushing to find in California.”

“Thoreau said that we only truly see when we look, and he was ever looking to discern the expressions, character and beauty of trees.”

More Than 100 Year Old Concord’s Community Club And Farm Come Together The United Woman’s Club of Concord will hold its November Tea Lunch at noon on Thursday, November 15th at noon at the West Concord Union Church, 1317 Main St (corner Church), Concord, MA 01742.

saturday, november 10, 2018

Steve Verrill will share with the club members the story of Verrill Farm from inception to present day. The United Woman’s Club of Concord has celebrated more than 100 years of philanthropy and Verrill Farm is celebrating it’s 100 years in existence. Both have made great contributions to the betterment of the Concord community. The United Woman’s Club of Concord (UWCC) is steeped in a

long and rich tradition of women who were ahead of their time. The Concord Woman’s Club was formed in 1895 with the West Concord Woman’s Club following in 1902. The two organizations became one in 2008 with the purpose of serving the community as an educational, philanthropic and social entity. The original members of the two organizations had the ingenuity to create opportunities for women to share information, enjoy good fellowship, and learn about world affairs. These were amazing and intelligent ladies who would be -- and are--leaders in the community. Many descendants of the clubs founders and

members continue to live in Concord and contribute meaningfully to the betterment of life in Concord. The philanthropic focus of the Woman’s Club today continues to raise funds for three to four scholarships presented to Concord-Carlisle High School students each spring. The funds are generated by the annual Fourth of July spectacular Jewelry Sale at Picnic in the Park and again at the early December Scholarship Fair held every year at the Harvey Wheeler Community Center Like UWCC, Verrill Farm with strong ties to the Concord community includes philan-

In 1982, after years of planning and negotiations, about 200 acres were placed under an Agricultural Preservation Restriction, thus preventing development of this land. Invasive Pests Go Postal: How To Keep Them Out Of The Mail (NAPSI)—If you’re not careful, an innocent trip to the post office could have a devastating impact on U.S. agriculture, economy and natural resources. That’s because invasive pests can easily hide in fruits and vegetables and on plants, then quickly spread to new areas when sent through the mail. Introducing even one pest to a new place is dangerous. For example, if you mail a single mango infested with fruit fly larvae to a friend, and he/she throws it into a garbage or compost pile, it could lead to a new fruit fly outbreak that could cost the United States millions of dollars. Before mailing that package of fruits, vegetables, seeds, plants, soils or plant-based handicrafts, remember these tips to keep invasive pests from spreading:

You may be in an area that is under federal or state quarantine for an invasive pest. Go to the “Pest Tracker” at to see quarantine areas. • Hawaii and Puerto Rico have their own restrictions on what can be mailed to the U.S. mainland. Visit “Traveler Information” at the USDA’s website. • Before you ship or receive such items from foreign countries (including packages from family and friends), contact your USDA office to see if it’s eligible for entry (even if you’ve shipped

or received it before). You could face a fine if you send prohibited items through the mail. • Expecting a package through an online purchase? Don’t assume items from foreign retailers are safe or legal to import. Shippers may not be aware of U.S. regulations regarding restricted items or care about your liability as the importer. Visit “Imports” at the USDA’s website. • If an item is seized by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, make sure it’s not sent again. If you purchased it from a foreign vendor, ask for your money back and don’t accept the vendor’s offer to replace the confiscated

Lifesaving Ideas Rewarded (NAPSI)—If you or someone you care about is among the approximately 47 million Americans over 65—or hopes to be someday—there could be good news for you. Many older Americans may live longer, safer lives thanks to recent research indicating that elderly adults have the greatest risk of fire death and the subsequent grant awarded to the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI). This prestigious Fire Prevention & Safety Grant comes from the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency to support fire prevention and safety efforts, prioritizing programs aimed at

high-risk populations. The ESFI is a nonprofit organization dedicated exclusively to promoting the importance of electrical safety. With funding from the grant, ESFI developed a new older adult safety campaign consisting of video and radio public service announcements, infographics and brochures. This multifaceted home fire safety awareness program will equip at-risk older adults and their communities with knowledge to help prevent the leading causes of home fires: cooking equipment, heating equipment and electrical equipment. For example, it advises everyone, especially older adults, to have both smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. Place the alarms inside each bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of your home. Don’t put alarms near windows or ducts, where drafts might interfere with their effectiveness, and keep them at least 10 feet away from cooking appliances to minimize false alarms. Test the

If you have difficulty hearing, you can get alarms that give off low-pitched sounds or vibrations. ESFI will distribute additional materials through Community Action Agencies (CAAs) as well as various Rebuilding Together affiliates to reach older adults in places with the highest rates of fire deaths. “Raising awareness among the most at-risk populations is crucial to preventing home fires, fire deaths and related injuries,” said ESFI President Brett Brenner. “This year, we’re working with CAAs that work directly with these populations to ensure that we educate even the hardest-toreach groups and decrease their vulnerability to home fires.” This is the sixth year that ESFI has received the grant. In the past, ESFI used the funds to directly affect more than 3.4 million children and their families by distributing classroom toolkits that were mailed to schools and given to ESFI’s nationwide network of safety advocates. Now’s The Time To Get Set For Applying To College (NAPSI)—If you or someone you care about is among the 3.6 million students who will graduate high school next year,

here’s a hint: Vacation time is a good time for seniors and their parents to get a head start on the college application process. You can focus on finding the right college without balancing the responsibilities of schoolwork and extracurriculars. Five Steps To College Here are five things you can do now to save time in the fall. 1. Create And Save Your Own Personal College List: Use free resources such as the College Board’s to search for and compare colleges, find scholarships, understand financial aid, navigate the application process from start to finish, and get reminders, tips and guidance for every step. With a profile on, you can continually update your list and find the college that’s best for you. 2. Register For The SAT: The SAT is an important part of admission and it’s accepted by all U.S. colleges and universities. The College Board recently redesigned the SAT to make it easier than ever for students to show their best work. Students can take the SAT on August 25, which gives them a chance to practice for the test without the added pressure of being in school. And students can prepare—free—by logging on to Official SAT Practice for a personalized plan, including thousands of interactive questions

with instant feedback, video lessons, full-length practice tests, and test-taking tips and strategies. 3. Show Colleges You’re Interested: There are many ways you can let your top colleges know you’re interested in attending. Visit a campus or go on a virtual tour; participate in an online chat hosted by the admission office; follow the college on social media; request more information through an institution’s online inquiry form; and give it a little bit more information about your interests. 4. Research Financial Aid: It’s important to consider college costs, so the College Board’s Net Price Calculator has information on potential financial aid and the true out-of-pocket costs of colleges. The summer is also a good time to gather the financial documents needed to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which opens October 1. And the Scholarship Search tool from helps students find scholarships, other financial aid, and internships from more than 2,200 programs, totaling nearly $6 billion. 5. Check Your Fee Waiver Eligibility: The College Board made changes to remove as many cost barriers as possible for low-income students applying to college. Students now

1. Follow the age guidance and safety information on toy packaging. The age grading isn’t about how smart a child is— it’s based on the developmental abilities of children at a given age and the specific features of the toy. 2. Avoid toys with small parts for kids under 3. Toys that have small parts are fine for older kids but can pose a choking hazard for children under 3. Toys with small parts are labeled 3+ and include a warning label, so keep a careful eye out as you shop. 3. Shop at a retailer you know and trust. Store staff at established businesses are knowledgeable about the latest safety information. Exercise caution when buying toys at flea markets, garage sales, secondhand stores and the like as these vendors may not be monitoring for recalled products. 4. Supervise play. Always supervise your children during playtime. Read through instructions and demonstrate the correct way to use a new toy. It’s the best way to make sure your child understands how to safely enjoy it. 5. Store toys safely. Lidded

toy storage should be nonlocking and have special safety features such as airholes, spring-loaded hinges, and clearances at the hinges to make sure little fingers won’t get caught. Organize and store toys to prevent slips, trips and falls. For more advice on toy and play safety, visit www.PlaySafe. org.

What You Need To Know About Your Ductwork (NAPSI)—Your health and your wealth. Those are the two major reasons you should have your HVAC system inspected by a reputable, certified professional. Consider this: Your Health Your heating and cooling system is essentially the lungs of your home. The system takes air in and “breathes air out. Through normal living in a house, a great deal of contaminants and air pollutants—dander, dust, chemicals—get pulled into the HVAC system and recirculated an average of six times a day. Over time, this causes a buildup of contaminants in the ductwork. While dirty ducts don’t necessarily mean unhealthy air, they can contribute to health issues, especially for people with respiratory problems, autoimmune disorders or allergies. Your Wealth According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 25 to 40 percent of the energy used for heating or cooling a home is wasted. Contaminants in the

heating and cooling system cause it to work harder and shorten its life. Even though there are filters, the system still gets dirty. When an HVAC system is clean, it doesn’t have to work as hard to maintain the temperature you desire. As a result, you save energy and money. What You Can Do A qualified contractor can meet your duct cleaning needs. Here are seven things to ask for: 1. Insurance and licenses. 2. An assessment and explanation of the service to be provided. 3. Information on which components will be cleaned as part of the service: air ducts (supply and return), coils, drains, registers, grilles and so on. 4. A limit on the amount of dust, dirt and debris released into your home during the cleaning. 5. Both agitation and vacuum collection while cleaning. 6. Information about any chemicals used as part of the cleaning, including a safety data sheet for the products used. 7. Proof of National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) membership and certification. NADCA members follow the industry standard for HVAC sys-

encourage you to get your blood pressure under control before it’s too late. Understanding High Blood Pressure High blood pressure is any level of blood pressure above 130/80. Its consequences include heart attack, stroke, heart failure, kidney disease, vision loss, sexual dysfunction and peripheral artery disease. According to the American Heart Association, 46 percent of Americans have high blood pressure, but only about half of them have it under control. Committing To A Plan Once you know you have high blood pressure, you can manage it very effectively through changes in eating habits, physical activity, and, when needed, medication. The best way to avoid the consequences of high blood pressure is to talk to your doctor and commit to a treatment plan that works for your life. Here are some questions to answer in preparation for your doctor visit: • How have you been feeling? • Is anything preventing you from sticking to your current plan?

Make Vision A Focus (NAPS)—Did you know that more than 23 million American adults have never had an eye exam? May is Healthy Vision Month—and the National Institutes of Health’s National Eye Institute (NEI) urges all Americans to make vision a focus. Take steps to protect your vision today, so you can see the people and things you love for years to come. Get an eye exam—Since many eye diseases and conditions have no early symptoms, an eye exam is the best way to find out how healthy your eyes are and if you are seeing your best. Talk to your eye care professional about how often you should have an eye exam. Eat eye-healthy foods—The foods you eat can help you protect your vision. Remember the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look away from your screen and focus on something that’s at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Know your family’s eye health history—Ask your family members about their eye health. Because most eye conditions run in the family, knowing your family history can help you tell if you’re at higher risk. How Your Next Dental Visit Could Save Your Life (NAPSI)—Nurse Sandy Wexler went to her dentist in 2012 for a routine teeth cleaning. During the exam, her dentist took a moment to feel the sides of her face, jaw and neck, looking for signs of oropharyngeal cancer—a type of cancer that occurs at the back of the mouth or top of the throat. Her dentist noticed an enlarged lymph node on the right side of Wexler’s neck and sent Sandy to see her physician. It was metastatic squamous cell oropharyngeal cancer. After weeks of radiation and chemotherapy at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Wexler was cancer-free. But had she not seen the dentist when she did, Wexler might not be alive today. “I credit [my dentist] with saving my life because otherwise it could have been six more months before this could have been diagnosed and found,” she said. The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be 51,540 new cases of oral cancer and oropharyngeal cancer diagnosed this year and 10,030 deaths from them. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has noted that oropharyngeal cancer is on the rise. As doctors of oral health, dentists see the mouth as a window to overall health and, as in Wexler’s case, can identify clues suggesting cancer. This means more and more dentists are talking with patients about health issues that might at first pass seem unrelated but can actually affect oral health. Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination is one such topic. In fact, the American Dental Association has partnered with MD Anderson in an effort to improve public and professional education about the HPV vaccine and HPV-related cancers. HPV vaccination was first discussed for its benefit in preventing cervical cancer in women, but there are other HPV-related cancers, including those at the back of the throat and the top of the mouth. The HPV vaccine can prevent infec-

Because of this, consistent with the recommendation of the CDC, many dentists are now recommending both their male and female adolescent patients get the vaccine. At your next dental appointment, don’t be surprised if your dentist checks for signs of oral and oropharyngeal cancer and talks to you about the benefits of the HPV vaccine. HPV vaccination can prevent cancers; a thorough exam for signs of oral and oropharyngeal cancers could save your life.

Connecting Caregivers To Local Resources And Support (NAPSI)—Americans are living longer these days. The number of older adults is expected to reach 73 million by 2030. With 30 percent of Americans serving in a caregiving role, it is important to remember that caring for a loved one can be both rewarding and difficult. Often, caregivers don’t know where to turn for advice and assistance. That’s where the

Eldercare Locator—a program of the U.S. Administration on Aging and administered by the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (n4a)—Comes in. By connecting older adults and their caregivers to local resources and support, the Eldercare Locator makes life a bit easier all around. The Eldercare Locator connects older adults and their caregivers to local services and supports across the spectrum of need, including inhome and community-based services, transportation and healthy aging. What It Offers Some of the Eldercare Locator’s more popular publications are: • “Before You Give Up the Keys: Create a Roadmap for Transportation Independence” • “Older Adults and Medication Safety” • “You Gave, Now Save: Guide to Benefits for Seniors” • “Living Well with Dementia in the Community: Resources and Support.” Learn More For tips and advice on caregiving, visit or call 1 (800) 677-1116 and see @ eldercarelocator on Facebook and @EldercareLoc on Twitter.

Fun By The Numbers Like puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your sudoku savvy to the test!

Here’s How It Works:

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
