By the war’s end, $18 billion had been raised. Most of the posters on exhibit are from the 1917-18

Learning About Coding And Debugging The Acton C.R.A.F.T. 4-H Club learned a little bit about computer programming during 4-H’s National Youth Science Month. For many of the members this wasn’t their first interaction with coding, yet they were still able to learn some valuable

lessons about writing code and how a computer might interpret the code. One activity was making sunflower seed butter and jam sandwiches. Each pair of members wrote codes using simple commands Junior Leader Andrew Zeng created. Assistant Leader Margaret Gibbs acted as the computer doing each step. It took several attempts to get successful codes that could be followed and

action unlimited fun and enjoyable to write code for a computer, but debugging, or fixing, the code is hard work and necessary for a computer to actually interpret the code. According to 14-year-old Andrew, “it’s fun to do [coding] in a group and help each other [write the code]”. It’s difficult to write a code the first time you try and it often takes many attempts to get it correct. Curry Kautz, a 17-year-old senior in high school, figured out “I often argue what I think commands should be” but that doesn’t mean the computer is going to interpret the command that way! It was important to learn that command definitions applied to everyone across the board, no matter who used the commands, interpretation doesn’t change. The coding activities were fun learning tools for what many people do every day at work. Those who work in computer technology or other scientific or mathematical fields frequently have to think through what their commands mean and how they might be interpreted. We are hoping that these 4-H members have a better appreciation for how their computers, phones,
and even cars actually run every day. 10-year-old Galen summed it up the best, “computers are a lot less like human brains than I thought they were”. 4-H is a community of young people across America learning leadership, citizenship, and life skills. For more information about the Acton C.R.A.F.T. or Z.I.N.G.E.R.S COMPACT 4-H Club, please contact Elaine Shirron, 4-H Leader, at 978635-0122. 4-H is the outreach education program of UMass Extension in cooperation with the United States Department of Agriculture and local government. Steve Verrill will share with the club members the story of Verrill Farm from inception to present day. The United Woman’s Club of Concord has celebrated more than 100 years of philanthropy and Verrill Farm is celebrating it’s 100 years in existence. Both have made great contributions to the betterment of the Concord community. The United Woman’s Club of Concord (UWCC) is steeped in a

long and rich tradition of women who were ahead of their time. The Concord Woman’s Club was formed in 1895 with the West Concord Woman’s Club following in 1902. The two organizations became one in 2008 with the purpose of serving the community as an educational, philanthropic and social entity. The original members of the two organizations had the ingenuity to create opportunities for women to share information, enjoy good fellowship, and learn about world affairs. These were amazing and intelligent ladies who would be -- and are--leaders in the community. Many descendants of the clubs founders and
members continue to live in Concord and contribute meaningfully to the betterment of life in Concord. The philanthropic focus of the Woman’s Club today continues to raise funds for three to four scholarships presented to Concord-Carlisle High School students each spring. The funds are generated by the annual Fourth of July spectacular Jewelry Sale at Picnic in the Park and again at the early December Scholarship Fair held every year at the Harvey Wheeler Community Center Like UWCC, Verrill Farm with strong ties to the Concord community includes philan-

However, thanks to generous gifts from local residents, Clover recently purchased a nearby property to house the preschool and, in time, a primary school. Gavin Robb, a Bostonarea architect leading the redesign of the property, will travel to Kampala next month to visit the site and meet with Clover’s Ugandan board and teachers. “The generous support we have received has created a thrilling new future for Clover,” said Diane Mercer, Co-chair of the Clover Board. “Our challenge now is to build a new school while continuing to educate our students. We hope special gifts at Rise Up! will help us do just that.” For tickets and more information visit http://clover-foundation.org About the Clover Foundation Based in Concord, MA, the Clover Foundation provides free pre -school and primary education for children in Kampala, Uganda, who otherwise would not have a ccess to an education. The Foundation also supports a nano-finance business loan program for Clover mothers so that they might better provide for their families.

A Friend In Need A Friend in Need (AFIN) is an arm of the South Acton Congregational Church (SACC) It is a small, all-volunteer organization dedicated to offering financial aid to people in need in the Acton/Boxboro/Maynard area. After injuring her foot in an accident and requiring surgery, “Janet” was unable to return to work. She and her husband depended on both of their salaries to be able to meet expenses. With a mortgage payment due, they found they could not cover this expense. They have a young family and worried about how to maintain their living situation. Fortunately an advocate contacted A Friend in Need, and we were able to provide some financial assistance during this temporary setback. Usually we have a one-time limit for help given to any family, but due to the economy we are trying to be a bit more flexible about that. Our mission is to provide immediate help until the family can receive more substantial aid from other agencies. Much of our money comes through pleas published in our local newspapers and from generous community residents. Acton/Boxborough United Way and the Maynard Community Chest support us through grant money. Besides SACC, several other churches support us through their Mission Funds. Depending on the resources we have on hand, we can usually provide between $300 and $800 to the needy family. Our mailbox is located at the South Acton Congregational Church. Our volunteers pay for postage and all other costs, so we are able to give away 100% of the money we receive. AFIN will consider helping anyone who is recommended by clergy or social service professionals associated with a local agency. Anyone in urgent need can be considered for financial
action unlimited assistance by going to a member of the clergy or social service representative and asking them to contact A Friend in Need on their behalf. We do not discriminate and will try to help anyone with a genuine need. We can also be contacted at email@example.com. If you would like to make a donation, please send your check to A Friend in Need, c/o South Acton Congregational Church, 35 School St., Acton MA 01720.

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
action unlimited dicts that it will be a wetterthan-average winter across most of the northern United States, extending from the northern Rockies to the eastern Great Lakes and the Ohio Valley. This could mean hazardous weather in some regions, including ice storms and windstorms that could knock out power. Now is the time to prepare the home in case of power outages. A recent storm in the New England area brought down tree limbs and whole trees onto power lines, leaving more than a million people in the dark, with some of those power outages affecting homeowners for several days. Having emergency backup power is one way that homeowners can be prepared for whatever winter has in store, as well as any future storms. Portable vs. home standby power Two basic options exist for homeowners: portable generators and home standby generator systems. Both solutions can keep the house lights on, appliances working, and in the event of a weather-related power outage or other emergency, will
keep the home the safest place to ride out the storm. Portable gasoline generators work well as a quick solution to roll out during an outage. Generally, a portable unit is low maintenance, but Generac Power Systems reminds users that they should check and run their generator and even refresh the tank of gasoline to be ready for the season. Additionally, Generac advises on portable generator safety: these units need to be taken outside and kept far away from an opening to the home to keep carbon monoxide fumes outside. A more complete option is a permanently installed home standby generator. A Generac home standby unit is connected to a home’s existing natural gas or propane line, turning on automatically when utility power fails. Unlike portable generators, home standby generators must be professionally installed and sized to fit the home, so homeowners should allow time for an installation process. Prepare your winter preparedness kit In addition to having emer-

Here’s a list of some items to be sure to include: • A working carbon monoxide detector • Gas to run generator • Extension cord • Water—one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation • Food—at least a three-day supply of nonperishable food • Can opener • Flashlight • First aid kit • Extra batteries • Prescription medication
• Shovel—to create a safe space for the generator outdoors. • Rubbing alcohol—for use as a deicer • Fire extinguisher • Books, games, puzzles or other activities for children.

(NAPSI)—If your brakes are trying to tell you something, you should pay attention. A properly operating brake system helps ensure safe vehicle control and operation and it should be checked immediately if you suspect any problems. “While an annual brake inspection is a good way to ensure brake safety, motorists should not ignore signs that their brakes need attention,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “Knowing the key warning signs that your brakes may need maintenance will go a long way toward keeping you and others safe on the road.” What To Watch Out For Motorists should look for the following warning signs that their brakes need to be inspected: • Noise: screeching, grinding or clicking noises when applying the brakes. • Pulling: vehicle pulls to one side while braking. • Low Pedal: brake pedal action unlimited

Because brakes are a normal wear item on any vehicle, they will eventually need to be replaced. Factors that can affect brake wear include driving habits, operating conditions, vehicle type and the quality of the brake lining material. Be sure to avoid letting brakes get to the metal-to-metal point as that can mean expensive rotor or drum replacement. The Car Care Council offers a free custom service schedule and e-mail reminder service to help car owners remember to have their brakes inspected and take good care of their vehicles. It’s an easy-to-use resource designed to help motorists drive smart, save money and make informed decisions.

Doing so is not only a responsible habit to begin as you establish your credit history, it can also be a way to identify incomplete or inaccurate information, as well as accounts that may have been opened erroneously. For free copies of your credit reports from Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, visit www.annualcreditreport.com. “Reviewing your credit reports is an easy way to monitor your financial commitments,” says Francis J. action unlimited tact the credit-reporting agency as soon as possible to communicate the discrepancy. You can contact all three nationwide credit-reporting agencies online, by phone or by mail. Whichever method you choose, the credit-reporting agency will investigate disputed information and respond back to you with the results. In a case of identity theft, the credit-reporting agency will work with you to place a fraud alert on your credit reports that can help prevent erroneous transactions from appearing in the future. A fraud alert informs creditors that you may have been a victim of fraud, and encourages them to take steps to contact you to verify your identity. Once a fraud alert is in place, you can choose to remove it at any time online. Under federal law, fraud alerts are free and are shared among the three credit-reporting agencies. If you have been a victim of identity theft and false accounts have been opened in your name, you may want to consider a security freeze. A security freeze restricts access to your credit report without your permission and may prevent unauthorized individuals from opening new accounts in your name. These are free for identity theft victims and, depending on the state,
senior citizens as well. For all other consumers, there may be a fee, based on individual state laws. Consumers should keep in mind that security freezes aren’t for everyone, especially those who are actively seeking credit or plan to apply for credit in the future, such as for making a large purchase or applying for a loan. It’s important to safeguard your information wherever you can. Regularly checking your credit reports to make sure your information is correct, and being aware of the tools available to help you protect your identity, are great places to start. Consumers interested in getting copies of their free credit reports should visit www.annualcreditreport.com.
Why Won’t My Ankle Sprain Heal? by Suneel K. Basra, DPM, FACFAS (NAPSI)—As a foot and ankle surgeon, I often hear “It’s just a sprain, no big deal.” Sometimes, however, a sprain can be, or become, serious. Sprained ankles are painful and can temporarily limit a patient’s ability to walk normally, so accurate diagnosis and treatment are necessary for proper healing. When a foot and ankle sur-

geon examines your ankle, he or she can determine the location and severity of the sprain, if the ligament is partially or fully torn, and if there is a broken bone or dislocation of the joint. All this affects treatment and recovery. A bone typically heals in six to eight weeks; a ligament sprain can take three to six months. Most ankle injuries—roughly 80 percent—require no surgical intervention. If just the outer ligament is injured, we can typically reduce pain and swelling with a combination of ice, wraps and rest to lessen the chance of further tearing of the ligament. The other 20 percent of patients might not have sought immediate care, and what began as a less severe sprain may have turned more severe, possibly requiring surgery. Sprains not adequately rehabilitated or repeat injuries can cause chronic ankle instability—marked by persistent discomfort and a giving way of the ankle from stretched or torn ligaments. Proper rehabilitation and treatment can strengthen the muscles around the ankle
and retrain the tissues within the ankle that affect balance to help prevent further sprains or injuries. Surgery is sometimes also needed. For more information or to find a foot and ankle surgeon near you, visit www. FootHealthFacts.org, the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons’ patient education website. • Dr. Basra is a board-certified foot and ankle surgeon and Fellow Member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.

What’s This Bump On My Foot? by Dr. Michael Coyer, DPM, AACFAS (NAPSI)—Bumps on feet can signal serious or nonserious conditions, so it’s best to have all bumps properly examined by a foot and ankle surgeon. The most common type of foot bump, ganglionic cysts, are soft, harmless, fluid-filled sacs found on the tendons and joints of the foot. Ganglionic cysts can be caused by a leaking of jellylike fluid from the “capsule” surrounding the joint or tendon and may be on the top of the foot, near the ankle joint or even on the side of the foot. The cyst won’t disappear on its own and the best way to prevent reoccurrence is to have it surgically removed by a foot and ankle surgeon. Plantar fibromas are another type of harmless bump found on the foot. Plantar fibromas are fibrous, hard bumps found within the ligament of the foot and are common in the arch area on the bottom of the foot. Nonsurgical treatments, such as steroid injections or orthotic devices, may relieve symptoms. Surgical removal is an option for people who still have pain after trying nonsurgical approaches. Foot bumps suspected of being something more serious are biopsied for proper diagnosis. If it is cancer, the foot and
ankle surgeon will remove the mass working with an oncologist for further treatment. Foot bumps don’t go away on their own. The sooner a bump is properly evaluated, you can have peace of mind, move forward with treatment and resume everyday activity. For more information on foot bumps or to find a foot and ankle surgeon near you, visit FootHealthFacts.org, the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons’ patient education website. • Dr. Coyer is a foot and ankle surgeon and an Associate Member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.
Tips To Help You Buy A Home Despite Student Debt (NAPSI)—There’s good news for young people hoping to buy their first home. A recent National Association of Realtors® (NAR) survey found that buying a house while carrying student debt is not impossible. In fact, 41 percent of recent first-time buyers had student debt, with a typical balance of $29,000. What You Need to Do Here are three tips to help you on your journey to homeownership while paying off your loans: 1. Start saving for a down payment now. After paying rent, stu-

dent loan bills and other monthly expenses, setting aside enough money for a sizable down payment of 20 percent may seem like a daunting task. Thankfully, most successful buyers come to the closing table with a lot less cash. NAR’s survey found that recent first-timers typically made a down payment of 5 percent. At the current national median existing-home sales price of $247,000, that’s a much more manageable amount of $12,350. The more money you can put down, the better. Assess your current financial situation, including total expenses, and start saving as much as you can. 2. Meet with a lender to find out your options. A lender will check your credit history, current debt obligations and other expenses to determine the amount of money you are qualified to borrow for a mortgage. There are a number of mortgage loan programs available for homebuyers with student debt, and many lenders have made favorable changes to how this debt is calculated as part of a borrower’s overall debt-to-income ratio. Furthermore, many lenders are now offering conventional loans for those with good credit with a down payment as low as 3 percent. 3. Be honest about what you can afford and rely on a real estate professional. When deter-
mining how much of a mortgage payment you can handle, be sure to factor in both the amount and total time you have left to pay off your student loans. Don’t get stuck in a situation where your housing costs and student loans are stretching you thin. That’s one reason using a Realtor®, a member of the National Association of Realtors®, is crucial to finding a home that fits your needs. A Realtor® will identify homes in your price range and negotiate on your behalf to ensure you stay within your budget. Learn More You can start your search today at www.realtor.com/realestateagents.
