Here’s How It Works:

Answers:

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

husband Paul became giants in the field of psychoanalytic selfpsychology. Self psychology, an offshoot of Freud’s psychoanalytic theory, was the first large psychoanalytic movement recognizing empathy as an essential aspect of the therapeutic process of addressing human development and growth. In an interview in the New York Times, Anna gave her own summary, “Selfpsychology simply says, ‘Get to know the other — that the skin color, the religion is not what determines a human being.’ As explained in an Amazon editorial book review, after emigrating to the U.S., Anna seldom spoke of the experiences she suffered while a young girl. At a family Seder gathering, her family asked for a story from her past. In an evocative, understated passage, she shared a bit of the tragedy she saw through the eyes of a child. Every year she added to this tradition by sharForty-Eighth Annual

Through her family’s support, Orenstein gained enough strength to share her experiences in her 2004 book, My Mother’s Eyes: Holocaust Memories of a Young Girl, in hopes of keeping the nightmare from ever happening again. Stay Safe This Halloween With NFPA’s Fire Safety Tips Halloween is creeping up on us. The rush is on to find the perfect pumpkin, the spookiest costume, and the best candy for trick-ortreaters. action unlimited going door-to-door collecting candy, and adults go all out decorating their homes with spooky accents,” said Lorraine Carli, NFPA’s vice president of Outreach and Advocacy. “The festivities, however, can be dampened if the proper safety measures are not put in place ahead of time and while out canvassing the neighborhood for treats.” From 2011-2015, U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated average of 840 home structure fires per year that began with decorations. These fires caused an average of 2 civilian deaths, 36 civilian injuries, and $11.4 million in direct property damage, per year. Fire can start when candles are too close to decorations or when long, trailing costumes come into contact with candles. To safely enjoy the Halloween holiday, NFPA has created a Halloween safety video that emphasizes preparedness and the importance of flame-resistant costumes and decorations. NFPA also offers parents and teachers tip sheets, kids’ activities, a pumpkin-carving template and more at the Sparky the Fire Dog® website. NFPA’s simple Halloween fire safety tip graphic

is also great for sharing on social media so that people can enjoy a spooky and safe Halloween. To ensure that your loved ones and home are free of fire this Halloween season, follow these safety guidelines: Candles Refrain from having an open flame. Use battery-operated candles or glow-sticks in your jack-olanterns. Costumes: Choose the right costume. Try to stay away from long or flowing fabric, and remain vigilant of extraneous costume pieces. Decorations: Avoid flammable decorations including dried flowers, cornstalks and crepe paper that are highly flammable. Keep decorations away from open flames and other heat sources, including light bulbs and heaters. Exits: Remember to keep all decorations away from doors so that they are not blocking any exits or escape routes. Smoke Alarms: Make sure all of your smoke alarms are working and up to date. This organization, founded in 1946, is unique in its support of veterans of the armed forces who have experienced spinal cord injury or dysfunction. PVA is a leading advocate for quality health care, spinal cord research, VA benefits and civil rights for veterans and all people with disabilities. The race will be followed by a complimentary BBQ, sponsored by Stop and Shop, for veterans and active service members and their families at 11 a.m. at the Nara Park Pavilion. Register for the race or contribute a donation by visiting active.com and search “Paralyzed Veterans of America Fundraiser 5k.” There is no better way to spend Veterans Day weekend than thanking and honoring those who have served our country!

When Veterans’ Caregivers Are Left Behind (NAPSI)—Dave Riley doesn’t take a step without his wife, literally. “In the morning, he needs help putting on his shirt and his prosthetics—both his legs and arms. Then, I brush his teeth and shave him,” said Yvonne Riley, who serves as her husband’s primary caregiver. At night, Yvonne reverses that routine to get Dave into bed. Dave is an Army and Coast Guard veteran; he served as a helicopter rescue swimmer. He is also a quadruple amputee. In 1997, he contracted a rare bacterial infection when swimming— septic shock pneumococcus sepsis. The infection essentially stopped the blood flow inside his body. As a result, doctors advised Yvonne that they would need to have all four of his limbs amputated and several internal organs removed. It was the only

action unlimited thing that could be done to save Dave’s life. “As I lay in the hospital bed recovering, I was devastated to find both my arms and legs had been amputated. All I could feel was despair,” Dave recalled. “I couldn’t imagine how the rest of my life would have any value or happiness.” But thanks to his wife’s continuous care and support from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and others, Dave was able to rebuild his life and start a new career in IT. Over the years, he has learned to ski and golf, he has competed in cycling races, and he has honed his skills as a woodworker. Dave has also risen through the ranks to become the National Commander of the 1.3 million−member veteran service organization DAV (Disabled American Veterans). Yvonne—like many other caregivers of veterans severely injured while serving their country—has made a lifetime of personal sacrifices to help manage her husband’s care. These sacrifices not only benefit Dave, but serve the country as well. Statistics show that family caregivers save the federal

government significant dollars, when compared to treating disabled veterans through institutions. For example, veterans with catastrophic injuries such as Dave’s, who are eligible for nursing home care, could cost taxpayers upward of $300,000 per year. However, by providing support to the family member caregiver through VA’s Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers, the average cost per veteran is under $30,000 annually. And the care is generally better for the veteran’s health and quality of life. It’s shown that family caregivers help reduce overall health care costs through care that minimizes medical complications and lowers the number of hospital admissions for veteran patients. Yet Yvonne and Dave do not qualify for all of VA’s caregiver benefits. Surprisingly, only veterans injured after September 11, 2001, are eligible for the complete comprehensive caregiver benefit package through the VA—which includes education and training, respite care and mental health services, and, per-

haps most importantly, monthly stipends and health care coverage for the caregiver. Organizations such as DAV, veterans such as Dave Riley, and Veterans Service Organization partners and caregiver advocacy groups are working hard to change these laws and correct this inequity. Many Americans, concerned about fair treatment for every veteran who needs a caregiver, are calling (202) 224-3121 to ask their legislators where they stand on the issue. “Caregivers are really America’s unsung heroes,” said Dave. “It’s only right that we ensure they are honored with the support they earned and

deserve.” For more information about support and resources for veterans’ caregivers, visit www.DAV. org/veterans/resources.

When Disasters Strike, You Can Be Part Of The Solution (NAPSM)—Every 24 seconds, somewhere in America, a fire department responds to a fire and firefighters are on the job, saving life and property. What many people may not realize is that most of these firefighters are volunteers. Seven out of 10 firefighters and emergency responders are volunteers, protecting their communities from a variety of hazards and saving taxpayers nationwide an estimated $140 billion a year. They come from all backgrounds, professions, ages, genders, races and ethnicities. The Problem Many local departments are struggling to meet staffing needs. Call volume has tripled in the last 30 years as fire departments’ roles in communities continue to expand, making the need for volunteers greater than ever. Yet many community members are unaware of this need. A survey by the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) found 41 percent of respondents did not know that their department used volunteers and 79 percent did not know their department was looking for more volunteers. An Answer Volunteering in the fire service provides a unique way for people to give back to the community while developing skills and experience that can contribute greatly to many aspects of their personal and professional life. It also provides camaraderie, a sense of purpose, and community impact to those who serve in

this extraordinary way. New recruits are trained by the department. Skills to learn vary based on the department’s response requirements, but training may cover a wide array of emergency situations such as fires, emergency medical incidents, terrorist events, natural disasters, hazardous materials incidents and other public service calls. Certain departments may have specific requirements, such as a high school degree, a physical and a background check, but when it comes down to it, volunteering as a first responder is all about having the heart and drive to make a difference where it’s needed most. First Artifacts In Place At National Army Museum (NAPSI)—The National Museum of the United States Army is under construction, and four artifacts are already in place. These unique pieces of Army history are so large that crews pre-positioned them early in the construction process so the Museum’s walls could be built around them. The first two artifacts were the M3 Bradley Cavalry Fighting Vehicle that led the 2003 charge from Kuwait to Baghdad, and the M4A3E2 Sherman “Jumbo” Tank, known as “Cobra King,” which was the first tank to break through German lines during World War II’s Battle of the

Time is running out to order a brick at armyhistory.org/bricks that will be in place when the Museum opens in late 2019. The U.S. Army has preserved and restored the artifacts that will be displayed in the Museum, which is being built at Fort Belvoir, just south of Washington, D.C. The Army is the only military service without a national museum dedicated to telling its entire history. For more information, visit armyhistory.org.

Bulge. Crews then installed an LCVP, one of the few remaining Higgins boats certified to have carried troops ashore at Normandy on D-Day. The fourth artifact, a Renault FT-17 Tank known as “5 of Hearts,” made history in World War I when it led an attack on enemy lines near Exermont, France. It is the only known surviving Renault FT-17 Tank used in combat by U.S. personnel. A World War I Liberty Truck, Korean War-vintage Jeep, and Huey helicopter will be added on later dates. The Museum’s construction is being funded privately through a campaign led by the Army Historical Foundation, with nearly 158,000 Founding Sponsors to date. The Foundation is also raising funds through the Army Brick Program, which allows individuals and groups to order personalized bricks that will line the Museum’s outdoor pathways.

Vital Advice For Hearing Aid Wearers by Dr. Navid Taghvaei (NAPSI)—Some disasters, such as hurricanes, can be tracked in advance so you have time to prepare before they actually strike. Others descend with little to no advance warning. If you have hearing loss, the wisest course is to put an emergency plan into place while there is no threat brewing. These four tips can help: 1. Register for all available emergency alert systems. Opt into all available alert systems and text notifications so if an urgent situation arises, you’ll get the warning. For information on the various national level alerts, including Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEAs), visit www.ready.gov/ alerts. Your emergency plan should include the locations of nearby shelters. If you have a service dog, make sure you have all its identifying paperwork, tags or vest ready, along with bedding and at least three days’ supply of food, water and medication. 2. Put together a list of your health and medical needs. Your emergency kit should include: • Names and contact information for your doctors • List of any allergies or other chronic medical conditions • List of any required medications and dosages • Your blood type • Any medical and communications devices you might require

(hearing aids, hearing aid accessories) • Health insurer name and full membership information (plan name, group number) • Names and contact information for your preferred hospital and pharmacy • Hearing aid make, model, and manufacturer information. 3. Assemble all possible communication methods. Figure out all the alternatives you can use to communicate, such as hearing aid accessories (assistive listening devices, or ALDs) that let you hand someone a microphone so you can hear what he or she says directly in your hearing aids. If your devices are equipped with telecoils (T-coils), make sure you know how to activate that setting. If you have difficulty speaking, create and store text messages in a smartphone or tablet (for example: “I am hard of hearing,” “Do you know sign language?” or “I can’t hear you, please write”). Write the same messages in a notebook or on cue cards as backup, in case your high-tech devices fail or run out of power. 4. Gather supplies and store in a carry-on bag somewhere you can access quickly. It should have: • Bottled water • Jerky, protein bars, cheese or peanut butter crackers, and similar nourishing snacks • Copies of important documents sealed in a waterproof bag (insurance cards, driver’s licenses, Social Security cards) • Flashlight and spare batter-

ies (alternately, a crank-powered flashlight) • $100 cash, in small bills, also sealed in a waterproof bag • Backup supplies for any medical devices (hearing aid charger, hearing aid batteries) • Cell phone charger and backup rechargeable battery supply • Compact travel blanket, pillow • Personal hygiene items (toothbrush and toothpaste, sanitary pads) • All-weather packable jacket • Crank weather alert portable radio. Also consider a separate emergency kit for your car with a first-aid kit, repair tools, flares and booster cables. Don’t wait for disaster to strike. The time to prepare for an emergency is while everything is going well.

Sweet Shortcut To Longtime Favorite Dessert (NAPSA)-This rich, old-fashioned custard dessert is made simple with convenient biscuits from your grocer’s freezer section. Reminiscent of traditional, sweet bread puddings that often call for day-old bread, the Grands!(r) frozen biscuits used in the Biscuit Bread Pudding recipe can be baked up to two days before preparing the dessert. Once the biscuits have cooled, store in a sealed foodstorage plastic bag at room temperature. It won’t matter if they’re no longer as soft-like fresh-baked

biscuits-the milk and sugar mixture will work its magic either way. For more great tasting recipes, visit www.Pillsbury.com. Biscuit Bread Pudding Prep Time: 20 Minutes Start to Finish: 1 Hour 15 Minutes 12 Pillsbury(r) Grands! frozen buttermilk biscuits (from 16-oz. bag) 8 eggs 41⁄2 cups milk 2⁄3 cup sugar 2⁄3 cup raisins 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 2 teaspoons vanilla Caramel topping, warmed, if desired 1. Heat oven to 350° F. Bake biscuits as directed on bag. Cool completely, about 20 minutes. 2. Meanwhile, generously spray twelve 10-oz. custard cups or twelve 41⁄2x11⁄4-inch disposable foil tart pans with cooking spray. In large bowl, beat eggs. Add milk, sugar, raisins, cinnamon and vanilla; mix well. 3. Cut baked biscuits into 1-inch cubes. Add to egg mixture; mix well. Let stand 5 minutes. Divide biscuit mixture evenly among custard cups. 4. Bake 20 to 25 minutes or until set. With knife or metal spatula, loosen edges of each pudding; slide onto dessert plate. Drizzle with warm topping. 12 servings
