Is Your Child Or Adolescent Struggling With Behavioral Challenges? Parents and families are often living a daily routine overwhelmed with stress and anxiety. Children and adolescents often struggle with a wide range of emotional and behavioral disturbances such as withdrawal from friends, school avoidance or sudden change in grades, depression, eating disorders, anxiety, abuse of alcohol and drugs, attachment issues and self-harming. NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is offering a free, evidence based, educational program called “NAMI Basics” specifically designed for parents and caregivers of adolescents and children living with emotional or behavioral challenges. The course is taught by trained volunteers who themselves are parents/caregivers of children living with emotional

difficulties. This structure creates an intimacy that few programs possess. The Basics program runs for six weeks, each class lasting 2 ½ hours. The program’s goal is to provide the fundamentals of caring for your child with emotional difficulties, your family and you. Up to date information on common disorders in children, research related to the biology of these disorders, and the most effective treatment strategies available, including various therapies and the role of medication sometimes utilized as part of treatment will be covered. In addition, workshops in problem solving, listening, and communication skills are highlighted. Strategies for working with both school and the mental health care systems and the emphasis on personal advocacy for your child in locating resources, supports and services are covered. Join us and obtain the tools needed that will greatly assist you in making the best decisions possible for the care of your child! Class will be offered in Acton starting Thursday, October 16th between 7:00-9:30 pm. For registration and location contact Sharon at 978-635-1287 or dunshar@gmail.com.

join our circle of friendship. Motherhood stretches you to do seemingly impossible things. Some days you feel as if you’re in a race to the finish line, stumbling over everything in your path — including Legos and laundry. A thriving mom is made for more than this. This fall we will use the book, “Mom Up,â€? by Kara-Kae James to talk about thriving with grace in motherhood. Are you ready to “Mom Up?â€? When you choose to mom up your mom moments you will step out of survival mode. It starts with taking time for yourself. Come as you are and be uplifted as we share our stories and capture the moments when God’s word and motherhood intersect. Topics include unpacking what is important, ripping off labels, getting out of survival mode, training up healthy habits, tapping into God’s truth in Scripture, and leveraging faith to raise resilient kids. To sign up, call Carol at 978-263-5156, ext. 207 or email growthgroups@mtcalvaryacton.org. Mt. Calvary Church is located at 472 Massachusetts Avenue, Acton, MA and our parking lot is behind the church off of Prospect Street. We hope you will check us out and come to enjoy the company of other moms like you‌ come when you can! Those who bring sunshine to the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves.

Acton Commission On Disability The Acton Commission on Disability put up two scarecrows to support NAMI at Curcubit Farm. Four members worked on the ‘grandma’, stuffing her arms and legs and body, dressing her and drawing her face, and her ‘granddaughter who sits in her lap, was purchased. The sign reads: Read to your children about challenges, successes and courage.” The actual book, which is being ‘read’ was donated to the Children’s Library last year. It is called “Rescue and Jessica” by Jessica Kensey and Patrick Downes, illustrated by Scott Magoon. Both Jessica and Patrick were injured in the Marathon Bombing in Boston. You can read their story on line.

N

!

A Friend in Need (AFIN) is an arm of the South Acton Congregational Church (SACC) It is a small, allvolunteer organization dedicated to offering financial aid to people in need in the Acton/Boxboro/Maynard area. We were contacted by an advocate for a woman dealing with medical issues and little income. She had fallen behind in her electric bill and received a shut-off notice. Although she has applied for fuel assistance, she must pay the overdue amount. A Friend in Need agreed to help with this bill. A widow living on financial assistance incurred a large auto repair bill. She paid it but her finances are minimal, and rent was coming due. A Friend in Need was able to provide some financial assistance to see her through this difficult time. An advocate for a family facing eviction contacted A Friend in Need. Medical issues resulted in job loss and

theactionpaper.com hence loss of income. A Friend in Need provided some financial assistance to help this family remain in their home. Usually we have a one-time limit for help given to any family, but due to the economy we are trying to be a bit more flexible about that. Our mission is to provide immediate help until the family can receive more substantial aid from other agencies. Much of our money comes through pleas published in our local newspapers and from generous community residents. Acton/ Boxborough United Way and the Maynard Community Chest support us through grant money. Besides SACC, several other churches support us through their Mission Funds. Depending on the resources we have on hand, we can usually provide between $300 and $800 to the needy family. Our mailbox is located at the South Acton Congregational Church. Our volunteers pay for postage and all other costs, so we are able to give away 100% of the money we receive. AFIN will consider helping anyone who is recommended by clergy or social service professionals associated with a local agency. Anyone in urgent need can be considered for financial assistance by going to a member of the clergy or social service representative and asking them to contact A Friend in Need on their behalf. We do not discriminate and will try to help anyone with a genuine need. We can also be contacted at afriendinneedacton@gmail.com.

We will also take some time to appreciate the the scenic Route 2 Farmland placed in Article 97 Protection in 2009, preventing its sale for development. Together, these lands create the Agricultural Gateway to Acton. This was made possible by the joint efforts of SVT, Towns officials of Concord and Acton, and ACT. WHY ARE TRICKS PART OF HALLOWEEN? For most of the year, playing pranks on loved ones and neighbors may not be met with open arms. But attitudes tend to relax on or around October 31, when millions of people celebrate Halloween. For some celebrants, Halloween is as much about tricks as it is treats. But why are tricks even involved with Halloween? According to Smithsonian.com, the tricks played on Halloween can be traced to 19th century celebrations of the holiday. Even though Halloween can trace its roots back thousands of years to the Celtic countries of northwestern Europe, the notion that it was acceptable to prank one’s neighbors is a relatively recent addition to Halloween lore. Smithsonian.com notes that, in the 19th century, Halloween night was a time for pranks, and it was not uncommon for older children to jump out from behind bushes to frighten young kids. Communities were generally smaller and more closely knit back then than they are today, which made it safer to pull pranks on Halloween. However, as the United States became more modern and urbanized, the once-innocent mischief gradually transformed into mayhem, prompting many people to call for Halloween celebrations that were safer for young children. Modern Halloween celebrations are not nearly as mischief-heavy as those of centuries past, though many celebrants still find it fun to play a mischievous prank or two on their loved ones come October 31.

Here’s How It Works:

Answers:

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
