Assabet Valley Camera Club Starts New Season Assabet Valley Camera Club, now going into its thirty-fourth year as a Hudson-based photography organization, meets the 1st. and 3rd. Wednesday of the month from September through early June. In 1985 a small group of people, who took an evening photography course at Assabet Valley Regional Vocational High School, decided to form the camera club. Currently AVCC

saturday, august 17, 2019

has over 50 members of all ages, with both amateur and professional experience, from 15 different communities in the greater Metro West area. Anyone interested in photography and expanding their pictorial skills is welcome to attend the next meeting on Wednesday, September 4th. Following a short business meeting, the evening’s program will feature a “Members’ Showcase”, where individuals will briefly present their photographic images based on a theme or highlights of their summer experiences.

AVCC meetings are held in the Great Room at the Hudson Senior Center, 29 Church Street, Hudson, and officially begin at 7:30 PM. The first meeting of the month generally features a program designed to instruct and/ or to entertain camera enthusiasts. During the second monthly meeting, member competitions of both print and digital images are judged and critiqued by qualified individuals. Assabet Valley Camera Club, a member of both the New England Camera Club Council and the Photographic Society of America, also participates in interclub competitions on regional, national and international levels.

The presentation is free and open to the general public. AVCC welcomes anyone interested in learning more about photography as a visual art and its practical application as a science. Members benefit from the hands-on experiences, from the knowledge presented in programs, and from having their work critiqued. For more information check out the AVCC website at or contact John Gill, club president, at 978-293-5192.

We hope you will join us as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of women gaining the right to vote. Our concert will feature songs by women composers and featuring the text of female poets. The main piece will be “A Winter Day” by Sarah Quartel. This five-movement work celebrates the long Canadian winter, setting texts by Sara Teasdale, Lucy Maud Montgomery (of ‘Anne of Green Gables’ fame), and Melville Cane. Each movement depicts a different time of day, beginning with the cold darkness before dawn (Timid Star) and concluding with the evening turning into dusk and darkness (Snow Toward Evening). Food finds As plants are harvested, many items are turned into delicious treats. No autumn shopping excursion is complete until you smell a fresh-baked apple pie or some apple cider doughnuts. Corn breads and fritters, cranberry snacks and wines from nearby wineries also are easy to find in autumn. These items make welcome additions to your own pantry, or bring a freshly made treat to a friend or family member’s home when paying a visit. Also, don’t miss the food-related festivals that pop up on community calendars in the fall. From garlic to potatoes to pumpkins to cheeses, many seasonal items are on display. You also can sample these foods in interesting applications and make a day of gathering recipes and supplies to enjoy later. A Friend In Need (AFIN) is an arm of the South Acton Congregational Church (SACC) It is a small, all-volunteer organization dedicated to offering financial aid to people in need in the Acton/Boxboro/ Maynard area. Our recent client lost her job, has no income and was unable to pay her electric bill. With the threat of cutoff from the utility, she had nowhere to turn. A

saturday, august 17, 2019

Friend in Need paid the outstanding bill, giving her some time to access other resources. After being homeless with two small children, another client has been getting resettled, but was faced with an auto repair bill. Though starting a new job, all savings had been depleted and there was no money available. A Friend in Need was able to pay the repair bill so that our client could get to work and this family

could continue starting over . Usually we have a one-time limit for help given to any family, but due to the economy we are trying to be a bit more flexible about that. Our mission is to provide immediate help until the family can receive more substantial aid from other agencies. Much of our money comes through pleas published in our local newspapers and from generous community residents. Acton/Boxborough United Way and the Maynard Community Chest support us through grant money. Besides SACC, several other churches support us through their Mission Funds. Depending on the resources we

have on hand, we can usually provide between $300 and $800 to the needy family. Our mailbox is located at the South Acton Congregational Church. Our volunteers pay for postage and all other costs, so we are able to give away 100% of the money we receive. AFIN will consider helping anyone who is recommended by clergy or social service professionals associated with a local agency. Anyone in urgent need can be considered for financial assistance by going to a member of the clergy or social service representative and asking them to contact A Friend in Need on their behalf. The Acton Commission on Disability The Acton Commission on Disability is reconvening after a month off, with new members, new agenda, and new time. The meeting will still be on the third Tuesday of the month in room 126 at Town Hall but the time will be from 10:00 AM to 12:00. The next meeting will be August 20th. After the meeting this new group may make other changes, and they will be on the town website as well as in the newspaper. This meeting will be a sharing of ideas, and discussing plans for improving awareness and access for people with disabilities. We will be reaching out to all town departments to continue to work with them toward this goal. This

is a group of caring individuals who want to help others...this is our only real agenda.

Youth Friday Night Dances Register now for your child now to get “real life” communication skills, a variety of dance skills and confidence - all while having fun! The Acton Woman’s Club is offering a series of 9 dance classes that start September 6. Besides registering for all 9, there is also a “Two for $25” Trial package for 7th through 10th graders at the 8:159:15pm Friday evening class (as there are quite a few openings in that class) – and all levels of experience are welcome. (There is still availability for 5th and 6th grade boys in the 7:00-8:00 class and a couple of slots for girls & the early class.) The “Two for $25” Trial is offered at a per class discount rate. Most students find they love it within 2 classes (even the most reluctant), so we expect many will want to continue for the remaining 7 classes. The Trial offers a 27% discount off the normal per class rate; if your child continues beyond this, then the cost is $130 to complete the remaining classes. The total cost for 9 classes is $155.00, whether

signing up for the Trial and then the remaining classes, or signing up for the total 9 classes. The fall Friday night dance classes help students build a lifelong foundation of social skills (so important for digital natives) and classic moves from a variety of dance styles – while having fun. The greatest availability remaining is for the 7th through 10th grades (in the fall) class from 8:15 to 9:15. The 5:456:45pm class is sold-out (5th & 6th grades). The 7:00-8:00pm class (5th & 6th grades) has only 2 slots left for girls, and14 slots for boys. For nearly seven decades, the classes have been held in the upstairs hall of the Acton Woman’s Club (a non-profit, charitable social club in Acton Center), which sponsor this activity. We extend a warm welcome to students throughout the area, newcomers as well as returning students for those in the 7th to 10th grades. quirky Sheldon? Go to www. and fill out an application (no-obligation) and his foster mom will contact you. All Dog Rescue is an all volunteer non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue of Massachusetts dogs in need and matching each with appropriate and responsible owners. Won’t yu help find Sheldon a forever home?

Sheldon was found wandering the streets of Boston and taken into a foster home in Marlborough with three resident dogs. Although he is startled by cars that whiz by and sudden loud noises, this doesn’t stop him from happily greeting everyone he meets on walks, dancing around, trying to get another dog or a person to engage. He’s quiet in his crate and riding in the car. He’s neutered, fully vetted and working on house training. At puppy naptime and in the evening, Sheldon falls asleep on your lap or next to you on the couch, staying close for comfort and companionship. Want to know more about

“Quirky” Little Dog Needs a Home Like his name-sake from TV, Sheldon is a little quirky…but in a good way! At eight months old, this adorable Chihuahua tilts his head up high when he hears a voices or a whistle and still has some puppy behaviors, tripping over his own feet or chewing on things he shouldn’t. And his slightly awkward, prancing gait just adds to his charm. Because of poor vision in one eye (the other is fine) and a minor neurological issue, Sheldon goes up stairs more safely than down, but since he’s only seven pounds, it’s easy to carry him, and he can go down himself if it’s just a few steps. He’s a smart pup who needs just a little extra patience.

There is no charge for parking or admission, and people of all ages can enjoy many free activities. “We take seriously the promise, ‘Spend a day, not a fortune,’ in our huge ultimate recycling tent where you can buy gently used home goods, toys, sporting equipment, books, tools, and jewelry. Come early for the best selection of homemade jams and pies. Stay for lunch, that includes meat, vegan and gluten-free options. Stop by the pop up farmer’s market for fresh local produce.” Children’s activities abound at the fair, including face painting and shopping at a huge selection of gently used toys and sports equipment, and old-fashioned games. Kids can enjoy free activities such as bubble making, pressing apples into cider, and playing giant Jenga. Dogs and their owners are welcomed to the free Pooch Parade at 11:30 am, with or without costumes, followed by the Top Dog Contests of talents and tricks, kissing and owner-pooch look-alike competitions, sponsored by Loyal Companions of Littleton. Live amusements are featured from open to close. For the second year, the UUUkes will perform. Andrew Bowers of Littleton will present his amazing puppets. Magician Stephanie Beach will amaze and amuse fair-goers. All will be performing in multiple shows,” stated Jim Barisano of Littleton. “And what’s a fair without ponies? As she has for years, Dawn and her friendly ponies will provide rides for the kids throughout the day,” Barisano added. Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

It sounds shallow but I get jealous of the other girl cats. I think I’d be fine with a boy cat because I don’t give Buckley any attitude. I wouldn’t be good around young kids but older kids or teenagers would be fine. Please have lots of cat toys and a comfy place for me to nap. Please visit our website: to view all our shelter residents and visit our craft store.

FPC Sunday Service The fears of society are often reflected in pop culture. On Aug. 18, at 10 a.m., the Rev. Dr. Cynthia Landrum will lead a service entitled “What do we fear? A Monster for every Age” at First Parish Church of Stow and Acton (FPC), Unitarian Universalist. Rev. Landrum will discuss how the shows, movies, and books we consume illuminate our current fears and what our religious response to those fears can be. FPC warmly welcomes gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people. FPC’s facilities are wheelchair accessible. For more information, visit www. The church is located at 353 Great Rd., at the corner of routes 117 and 62, in Stow.
