A compilation of all this photography has been combined in a French documentary to be shown at Fort Devens Museum on Saturday, August 18, starting at 1 p.m.

saturday, august 11, 2018

It’s a feature of the day as the Museum opens its doors to visitors from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Authorities located Base Hospital No. 8 in the large Normal School of Savenay and kept adding temporary buildings around it. This hospital alone had an almost 2,500-bed capacity, but it was part of a cluster of hospitals forming a center hospital at Savenay with a nor-

mal capacity of 8,000 beds. By contrast, today’s Massachusetts General Hospital has just over 1,000 beds licensed. The documentary is a comprehensive look at what was an immense medical treatment center. Savenay is located halfway between the French cities of St. Nazaire, a major debarkation point for American soldiers in World War I, and Nantes. Fort Devens Museum is on the third floor of 94 Jackson

Road and is wheelchair accessible. Its focus is on preserving and sharing the history of the over-100-year-old Camp/ Fort Devens and the stories of those who trained, worked, and lived there. No charge is made for admission to the Museum itself or to this program, but a generous donation would be gratefully appreciated. For more information please email info@ fortdevensmuseum.org.

Tips To Help You Avoid Financial Exploitation (NAPSI)—Older Americans should know that while financial abuse is believed to cost seniors an estimated $3 billion annually, you can help prevent it and protect yourself. Signs To Watch For • You, family, friends or your bank notice financial activity you

don’t recall, that is not consistent with your financial history or that is beyond your means. • Your caregiver or beneficiary refuses to use your funds for necessary care and treatment or is threatening to place you in a long-term care facility unless you give him or her control of your finances. • It appears that food or medication has been manipulated or withheld so you become weak and compliant. Steps You Can Take • If you feel threatened and believe you are in immediate danger, contact law enforcement. • Talk with family members, friends and trusted professionals to plan your financial future. If managing your daily finances is difficult, consider engaging a money manager. • Talk with a lawyer about creating a durable power of attorney for asset management, a revocable or living will, trust and health care advance directives. • Never send anyone personal information to collect a prize or reward. • Don’t be pressured or intimidated into quick decisions by a salesperson or contractor.

• If you suspect you or someone you know is being exploited, call (800) 677-1116 to get connected with the state Adult Protective Services or other appropriate aging resource. • For more information on financial exploitation, you can request a free brochure from the Eldercare Locator, “Protect Your Pocketbook: Tips to Avoid Financial Exploitation.” Call (800) 677-1116; the brochure can also be downloaded at www. eldercare.gov. The Eldercare Locator is a public service of the U.S. Administration on Aging and is administered by the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (n4a).

• Don’t sign any documents you don’t completely understand without first talking it over with an attorney or a family member you trust. • Never provide personal information (Social Security, credit card, ATM PIN number) over the phone unless you placed the call and know with whom you are speaking. • Tear up or shred credit card receipts, bank statements, solicitations and financial records before disposing of them. • If you hire someone to help you in your home, be sure that person has been properly screened, with criminal background checks completed.

OPEN YOUR HOME TO A LOVING COMPANION

Matilda female – 2 years “I’m in search of my forever home. I am a scared girl that has come a long way. I would do best in a quiet home with no small children or dogs. I would make an excellent pal for your current kitty while you admire me from a distance. I love other kitties but I am still learning that humans don’t mean me any harm. I’ve let a couple volunteers pet me, and I might even rub against your hand if you’re offering up a fresh bowl of wet food. However, I will need some time to get used to my surroundings and be comfortable living with a human family. If you have the time and patience to help a scared girl please consider a foster to adopt situation. I would be best in a safe indoor/outdoor situation because I love to run around and be playful. P.S.: If you have mice in your house, they won’t be there for long with me around.”

Mediumship Circle Have you ever thought that you may feel a little different when you enter a room full of people. Did you feel like someone was trying to get your attention? Do you know you have the ability to reach the other side and get messages from them?If so, you may very well be a medium. Like others in the area I was looking for somewhere to go around Nashoba Valley and hang with like minded people. Well now there is. On the first Friday of each month we are holding a Mediumship Circle at the Dragonfly Wellness Center in Devens. It’s a practice session for mediums and those that think they may be. Spanish Flu Every year we are encouraged to get the latest version of a flu shot. If we still come down with the flu, doctors know just what to do to ease the effects and we are better within a few days. One hundred years ago, patients were not so lucky and too many died

of their illness. Just as today, certain businesses actually made money from the illnesses of others. At the Shirley Historical Society Museum, we are going to explore the causes and all the effects of the Flu Pandemic of 1918 and we will see what guidelines for good health we can learn from past experience. The opening program and reception for the museum display about the Spanish Flu will be on Saturday, September 15th, at 7:00 pm at the Shirley Historical Society Museum, #182 Center Road in Shirley. The program is free and open to the public. For more information, call 978-4259328 or email mail@shirleyhistory.org.

Get To The Bottom Of Water Waste (NAPSI)—Have your water bills started creeping up? Or, if less than five people live in your home, does your winter water bill exceed 12,000 gallons per month? Then it’s no mystery; you probably have a water leak. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the average

Sudoku

Fun By The Numbers Like puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your sudoku savvy to the test!

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

action unlimited American household wastes more than 10,000 gallons of water each year from easy-tofix leaks. That’s enough water to wash 270 loads of laundry! EPA’s WaterSense® program has announced March 20 through 26 as its ninth annual Fix a Leak Week, a time to search out water leaks and stop them in their tracks. Become a leak detective and follow three simple clues— check, twist, replace—to solve the mystery of water waste in your home. Check: Examine your water meter before and after a twohour period when no water is being used. If the number changes, you probably have a leak and should investigate further. Check for silent toilet leaks by adding a few drops of food coloring to the tank, then wait 10 minutes; if some color sneaks into the bowl before you flush, the culprit is likely a worn toilet flapper that needs to be replaced. Twist: Next, snoop around for dripping pipes or fixtures. Just one showerhead that drips 10 times per minute can waste more than 500 gallons of water per year. Stop that drip by tight-

ening the connection between the showerhead and the pipe stem, and use pipe tape to secure it. To save even more, twist a WaterSense labeled aerator on your bathroom faucet, to use 30 percent less water without a noticeable difference in flow. Replace: If you suspect that one of your leaky fixtures is beyond repair, it may be time for a water-efficient replacement. Consider a WaterSense labeled toilet, faucet, or showerhead that has been independently certified to use less water and perform as well or better than standard models. You can find a lead on products that meet EPA’s criteria for efficiency and performance using the Product Search Tool on the WaterSense website at www. epa.gov/watersense. Get the facts on leaks and other water-saving tips at www. epa.gov/watersense/fixaleak.

Don’t Let Kids Drown: Teach Them To Swim (NAPSI)—Cooling off in a pool, lake or ocean can be a refreshing idea—but only if you know how to avoid the dangers. The Problem Drowning is a leading cause of death in children under 14. One reason is that 70 percent of African-American and 60 percent of Hispanic children don’t know how to swim, the USA Swimming Foundation reports. Minority children are also less involved in competitive swimming when compared to their white peers, comprising only 1 percent of USA Swimming membership. Some of the reasons include: • Lack of Swimming Access. Facilities in traditionally underserved communities are few and far between and tend to be expensive. • Cultural Constraints. Data shows there may be a legacy of fear, perpetuated through generations. • Parental Perceptions. Adults who don’t swim may not know what needs to be done so that their children learn to swim safely. An Answer To help close the gap in swimming safety, the YMCA created Safety Around Water, a program that teaches children of all ages and backgrounds—and their parents—that water should be fun, not feared, as long as you know how to stay safe. This year, the Y awarded over 27,000 scholarships for free water safety lessons to children in underserved communities. The children learn fundamental water safety skills that include what to look for in a safe place to swim, what to do if they find themselves in the water unexpectedly, and how to swim a short distance on their front, roll over onto their back to rest, and then roll on their front to continue swimming to safety.

action unlimited “The Y teaches more than 1 million children from all backgrounds invaluable water-safety and swim skills every year, and the disturbing statistics about youth drownings underscore the significance of this work,” said Kevin Washington, president and CEO of Y-USA. “We are giving swim scholarships to children in underserved communities who statistically are at greatest risk of drowning so they can learn to be safe in and around the water. The Y is committed to reaching more kids, saving more lives and changing the statistics.” Water Safety If you know how to stay safe in and around water, swimming can be a lifelong source of fun and exercise. Here are six things you should know: 1. Never swim alone. Swim only when a lifeguard is on duty. 2. Supervise children whenever they are in or near water. Whether it’s a bath, the ocean or anything in between, stay within arm’s reach of the child at all times. 3. Don’t hold your breath. When swimming, children should avoid holding their breath for any length of time. This can lead directly to drowning and other severe physical side effects. 4. Wear a life jacket. Novice and nonswimmers should wear Coast Guard−approved life jackets. 5. Don’t jump in to save some-

one struggling in deep water. Even if you’re a great swimmer, you can be overpowered by a panicked person, pulling you underwater. The Y teaches the “reach, throw, don’t go” concept of using a long object to reach for the swimmer and pull him or her to safety. 6. Enroll in water safety classes. The Y teaches fundamental water safety skills and how to react if you find yourself in water unexpectedly. Learn More Families interested in further information about enrolling a child in Safety Around Water or Y Swim Lessons should visit www.ymca.net/watersafety.

Mind-Body Workshops Help Military Heroes Heal (NAPSI)—To help veterans, active-duty members of the military and their families better cope with stress and trauma, the American Red Cross created a new set of workshops teaching easy-to-use skills that promote wellness through mind-body connection. What They Do These Mind-Body Workshops focus on the powerful ways in which emotional, mental, social and spiritual factors can directly affect health. The first workshop, Using Mind-Body Skills for

Performance, helps participants explore the use of breathing, mindfulness techniques, stretching, movement and guided imagery to aid healing. The second workshop, Using Mind-Body Skills, guides participants through using mindbody techniques for personal growth and healing through drawing, journaling, meditation, mindfulness, body scan, progressive muscle relaxation and selfdirected imagery. Expert Opinions “The Red Cross Mind-Body Workshops will afford service members, veterans and their families an opportunity to learn practical relaxation techniques to improve their emotional, mental, social and spiritual well-being,” said Alison M. Whitehead, MPH, RYT, PMP, VHA Office of Patient Centered Care and Cultural Transformation. The workshops are part of the organization’s well-established resiliency program, which also includes Reconnection Workshops and Psychological First Aid courses. The extensive Red Cross presence in communities and on military installations around the world allows easy access to the new program for members of the military and veterans. “There is no magic formula for healing both the visible and invisible injuries caused by the challenges of a military lifestyle,

pg. 15

and that’s why the Red Cross is excited to work with the Bob Woodruff Foundation to create this complementary and integrative program,” added Koby Langley, Senior Vice President for Service to the Armed Forces at the Red Cross. “The Bob Woodruff foundation supports programs that promote a holistic approach to healing for those recovering from the hidden wounds of war,” explained Anne Marie Dougherty, the executive director. How To Learn More For further information about the Mind-Body Workshops, go to www.redcross.org/mindbodyworkshops. The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40 percent of the nation’s blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. It’s a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission.
