“It is that time of year again to start thinking about water conservation and saving rain water” says Robert A. Pontbriand, Ayer Town Manager. “Rainfall is hard to gauge. Harvesting rain water with a rain barrel can mitigate the irregular patterns of rainfall. To help homeowners and the town manage their water supplies, Ayeris offering residents the opportunity to purchase rain barrels at a discount.” Throughout New England residents depend on infrastructure built in the years following WWII to supply water. Capturing and storing water at the home and the use of rain gardens are the two most effective ways to minimize storm water runoff. Each year homeowners face higher costs for water and sewer. Saving rain water helps homeowners hedge against these rising costs. Rain water is a free healthy alternative; it is organic, has no chlorine, no fluoride and no chemicals. It is an excellent water source for plants, gardens, lawns and any non-potable use.
Regular use of a rain barrel can pay for itself in one season. One tenth of an inch of rain on a 1000 square foot roof --about 25 minutes of moderate rainfall-- will fill a 60-gallon rain barrel. New England typically receives 17” of rain during the growing season from May through September. This provides enough water to fill 170 rain barrels. At 2 cents per gallon (per the MWRA) homeowners can expect to harvest $204 worth of water. Droughts stress residential landscaping and town water facilities. In 2016, 168 communities in Massachusetts faced restrictions on nonessential outdoor water use. There is no

Living History Weekend At Devens 100 years ago, in 1918, hundreds of thousands of soldiers were training at Camp Devens and other cantonments in the U.S. while more were fighting overseas in World War I. As part of its on-going World War I commemoration, the Fort Devens Museum is sponsoring a World War I Living History Weekend on July 28th and July 29th at the quadrangle behind 94 Jackson Road, Devens. Come explore four WWI encampments for an overall
experience of The Great War: Allied Powers, Central Powers, Red Cross/Salvation Army, and Civilians. There will be equipment and vehicles including two Model T ambulances, artillery, and civilian Model T’s. Uniformed re-enactors will display their gear and offer period military demonstrations. President Woodrow Wilson will be in attendance reviewing the troops! The hours for the weekend are: Saturday July 28th from 10 AM to 5 PM, and Sunday July 29th from 10 AM to 3 PM. Emerson Hospital Offers Self-Defense Seminar For Women And Girls A recent NY Times article reported UN findings highlighting the “alarmingly high rate of violence against women”, despite the gains women have made in education, health and even political power in the course of a generation. About 35
percent of women worldwide — more than one in three — said they had experienced physical violence in their lifetime, the report finds. Women need to empower themselves with techniques to protect themselves and avert potential attackers. With knowledge comes awareness that will allow women to avoid precarious or harmful situations, and take control over their own bodies. On Wednesday, August 8th, Emerson Hospital will offer a unique self-defense seminar for females ages 13 and up. The seminar will focus on hands-on self-defense techniques, strategies, and tips for staying safe and could be particularly valuable for women who are heading off to college in the fall. Taught by fourth-degree black belt instructors from the Concord Self Defense Academy, the class is appropriate for those who are starting to become more independent, including teens who are walking, biking or driving places on their own. During the seminar, instructors will teach techniques and strategies to keep participants safe and demonstrate ways to escape from common

Free parking is available in the office park. The cost is $40 per person and spaces are limited. For more information about this and many other wellness classes at the Steinberg Wellness

Veteran Mental Health (NAPSI)—While the appreciation and respect for our military is a year-round sentiment, this month marks a time to reflect and not only thank military service members and veterans for their service, but to make sure we are supporting them physically and emotionally as they transition from active duty. Every day, 20 veterans commit suicide, according to a recent study from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Suicidal thoughts can affect anyone regardless of age, gender or background. Yet, veterans are at much higher risk; in 2014, veterans accounted for 18 percent of all deaths by suicide in the U.S. Extra attention should be devoted to promoting resources around and awareness of the issues of suicide prevention, and connecting individuals with suicidal ideation to treatment services. Warning Signs The risk for suicide is 21 percent higher among veterans when compared to U.S. civilian adults, according to the VA’s study—the need for more mental health resources is evident. Some of the factors affecting veterans are presence of serious health conditions; ongoing stress or single major stressors such as job loss; exposure to someone else’s suicide; or a family history of suicide. While it takes a trained professional to evaluate someone for suicidality, the public can be aware of the above risk factors and can help to identify warning signs that indicate someone they know might be suicidal. Like risk factors, it is often the combination of suicide warning signs that are more important than one single sign. A Positive Approach The call to address veteran suicides is a national issue that reached the White House last year when President Obama
action unlimited signed the Clay Hunt Suicide Prevention Bill. It made information on suicide prevention more easily accessible to veterans. It instituted a peer support and community outreach pilot program to assist transitioning service members, opened up incentives to encourage more people to work at the VA and established an annual evaluation of VA mental health and suicideprevention ?programs. While this is certainly a positive step toward improving mental health services for veterans, the solution will not come from one law, organization or individual. It takes a comprehensive commitment of support from the community as a whole. As one of the largest providers of education to veterans, University of Phoenix recognizes that as it prepares veterans for the next step in their life, the adjustment back to civilian life is not just about getting a quality education. University of Phoenix wants to be able to help our veterans in their transition to civilian life. Not only has University of Phoenix always been proud to serve our service members and
prepare them for future success, but it also works hard to earn the trust of our men and women in the military, and their families. University of Phoenix is proud that so many trust it to continue their personal and professional journeys upon returning to civilian life. It believes our soldiers deserve strong help in getting a head start, and is always working to make sure it provides them just that. Fun By The Numbers Like puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your sudoku savvy to the test!
Here’s How It Works:
Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

tain financial financial stability. stability stabi lity. Usually we have a one-time limit for help given to any family, ily but due to the economy we are trying to be a bit more flexible about that. Our mission is to provide immediate help until the family can receive more substantial aid from other agencies. Much of our money comes through pleas published in our local newspapers and from generous community residents. Acton/
Boxborough Boxborough United United Way Way and the Maynard Community Chest support us through grant money. Besides SACC, SACC several other churches support us through their Mission Funds. Depending on the resources we have on hand, we can usually provide between $300 and $800 to the needy family. Our mailbox is located at the South Acton Congregational Church and the church generously pays for our telephone answering service. Our volunteers pay for postage and all other costs, so we are able to give away 100% of the money we receive. AFIN will consider helping anyone who is recommended by clergy or social service professionals associated with a local agency. Local clergy and social service agencies know how to contact A Friend in Need on behalf of an individual in need. We do not discriminate and will try to help anyone with a genuine need.
