dially invite the public to come hear National Book Award winner, Julia Glass, and acclaimed mystery author, Hank Phillippi Ryan discuss Glass’s latest book, A House Among The Trees on Wednesday, June 7, 2018 7pm Julia Glass’s richly imagined novel begins just after the sudden death of world-renowned children’s book author Mort Lear, who leaves behind a wholly unexpected will, an idyllic country house, and difficult secrets about a childhood far darker than those of the beloved characters he created for young readers of all ages. Left to grapple with the consequences of his final wishes are Tommy Daulair, his longtime live-in assistant; Merry Galarza, a museum curator betrayed by those wishes; and Nick Greene, a beguiling actor preparing to play Lear in a movie. Vivid and gripping, filled with insight and humor, A House Among the Trees is an unforgettable story about friendship and love, artistic ambition, the perils of fame, and the sacrifices made by those who serve the demands of a creative genius. “It’s a pleasure to be in the hands of a consummate storyteller, and Glass’s mastery is particularly evident in her skill-
ful use of Morty’s obvious but never overbearing resemblance to the late Maurice Sendak. Yes, they’re both crotchety gay men from Brooklyn who moved to Connecticut after establishing their reputations with controver-

• Determine your camp budget. As varied as program offerings may be, camps also can vary greatly with regard to cost. Government-run camps may be less expensive than those offered by private companies. Day camps typically cost less than those that provide room and board. Find out if a particular organization subsidizes a portion of camp costs. Scouting programs often have a dedicated camp and may offer affordable options for scouts. Martial arts schools and dance centers frequently offer camp schedules. If camp seems out of reach, look into local summer recreation programs at parks or schools. Such programs may not be as extensive as those offered by camps, but they can quell kids’ boredom and keep children occupied during the day. In addition to camp, remember to plan for some free days so children can just enjoy some downtime. Such days can break up the monotony of a routine and provide kids and families time to relax together.
Offering: • Free Style Ice • Hockey Skills Ice • Learn to Skate Classes
• Inquire about camp schedules. While many camps are flexible, day camps do not have the same level of flexibility as afterschool programs. Arrangements will need to be made if care is required after regular camp hours. Speak with camp staff to see which types of after-hours programs, if any, are available.
Summer recreation may be far off, but it is never too early to start making summer plans, including finding camps and other activities for kids. TF162873
• Explore all options. Camps come in more flavors than ever before. Certain camps may be faith-based ministries while others may focus on particular sports. Band camps and art camps may appeal to creative kids. Also, there are plenty of general-interest camps that offer various activities without narrowing in on any particular one. Parents may need to choose between a sleepaway camp or day camps, depending on which camp experience they want for their children.

action unlimited awareness about mental health and mental illness. According to Mental Health America (MHA), the 2018 theme is Fitness#4Mind4Body. The theme “is a call to pay attention to both your physical health and your mental health, which can help achieve overall wellness…” Good mental health is essential to overall health and personal well-being. It also contributes to the ability to lead a healthy, balance and productive life. Emotional problems can impair a person’s thinking, feelings, and behavior and, overtime, can become increasingly serious and disabling. Unfortunately, many people do not seek treatment for mental health issues for a number of reasons. They may not be completely aware of the extent of their problem, they may be hesitant to make contact with a mental health professional because they fear they will be stigmatized, or they may not know how to access services. Yet, overall the quality of life is greatly improved when a person with a mental health concern or problem seeks help and receives appropriate treatment from a qualified professional.
Numerous suicides and suicide attempts have been attributed to undiagnosed and/or under treated mental illness. For this reason, The Jason Foundation supports the efforts of Mental Health America and Mental Health Awareness Month. The Jason Foundation, Inc. (JFI) is a nationally recognized leader in youth suicide prevention and awareness and provides programs to all 50 states at no cost through their National Network of Affiliate Offices. The programs are designed to help the public recognize when a young person is struggling with thoughts of suicide and where they can go for help. I recently arrived at the shelter when my previous owner was no longer able to take care of me. I am a sweet boy that is looking for a quiet forever home. I get along with other kitties and my best pal here at the shelter is my brother Jingles who is also a Siamese. We would love to be adopted together if possible. Please visit our website at www.catsontheweb.org to view all our shelter residents.

Children’s Books For Philippine Libraries For the past two months, Marlborough Rotarians collected new and gently used children’s books for rural libraries in the Philippines. Members of the public were asked to contribute to the collection. Boxes were placed at Marlborough Public Library, EKG Networking office on Florence Street, Al Brodeur Auto Specialists on South Street, St. Stephen Lutheran Church, Shine Salon, and many other businesses around the City. Rotary Club of Marlborough President Sem Aykanian noted, “We collected the books for

Outside the urban areas, children have little or no access to reading materials and this project will help establish libraries for them to access a variety of materials. The target is grades K-6.” We will ship the books to the local Rotary Club in the Philippines and they will distribute them to where the need is greatest.” Rural libraries in the Philippines can be nothing more than a room with one bookcase of books. Children need books in order to learn, which is necessary if they are to ever rise above poverty. “We are pleased that members

and the people of Marlborough donated approximately 1,000 children’s books to this collection,” Margaret Cardello, Marlborough Public Library director and project chair, said. Peter Mongeau, project cochair, added, “We are partnering with the Rotary Club of Pag Davoa in the Philippines to supply a number of one-room libraries with books geared for children in grades K-6. After the labeling and packing process at our regular weekly meeting, we took the books to a shipper that specializes in overseas transport and sent the books to the children in the Philippines.”
The Marlborough Public Library has purchased a scanner that will allow people to view the library’s collection of historical newspapers on microfilm. The collection consists of The Marlborough Enterprise dating back to 1889 and the Marlborough City Post, a shortlived local newspaper that published from 1970-1975. The newspaper microfilm reels are
used by genealogists, historians, and residents to find relatives, research historic events, or browse for interesting pictures of the City. In addition to newspapers, Federal Censuses for Marlborough from 1810-1890 and Civil War Records of the Massachusetts Volunteers which lists soldiers’ names, regiments, and town of residence are available. The City of Marlborough Records contain lists of residents as well as births, deaths, and other events of interest all the way back to 1783. “We are grateful to both the Brigham Family Trust and DCU/ Digital Federal Credit Union for providing funds for this new machine so residents can continue to explore Marlborough’s history,” said Margaret Cardello, Library Director. For a demonstration of the machine or to start using the scanner see the Library’s Reference Desk for assistance. The Marlborough Public Library is home to thousands of books waiting to be read. Along with books, it provides movies, music, and games. There are also many study areas available and

Fun By The Numbers Like puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your sudoku savvy to the test!
Here’s How It Works:
Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
