Rosé season has officially arrived and with so many to choose from, the task of picking one can be daunting. So, in order to help guide you in the right direction, here are a few rosés to get you started this season. Commanderie de Peyrassol Rosé Côtes de Provence 2017

Le Poussin by Sacha Lichine Rosé Vin de France 2017

This is the more serious and traditional rosé, kind of like that grandfather that walked uphill both ways to school and home. Even though this is meant for the wine buff, it is still exceptionally friendly to those still learning to appreciate a good rosé. Here the minerality sneaks up sooner by being an integral part of the palate. Citrus notes, bay leaf, and crushed sandstone make up the wine which is only enhanced by the tingling acidity that makes your mouth water for more.

From the dominant wine team made up of Sacha Lichine and Patrick Léon comes our best selling rosé, Le Poussin. This light-bodied yet enticingly fruity rosé has become a mainstay for us not only because this wine offers everything one could want from a rosé, it does so in a cute package and for a bargain. Raspberries, mint, and peach blossom are found on the palate. The minerality and bright acidity bring up the finish making this the porch pounder we have all been looking for.

Sale: $1598

Domaine Lafage ‘Miraflors’ Rosé Côtes Catalanes 2017 Domaine Lafage might be one of the most intriguing producers from southern France. Located in the Roussillon, Domaine Lafage and its wines are only rivaled by those across the border in Spain. Clean, fresh, palate engulfing, and flavorful are just a few adjectives to best describe the wines Domaine Lafage produce, and the Miraflors Rosé doesn’t lack any of them. While having the upfront fruit Domaine Lafage is known for, it still gives a nod to the Provencal style of rosé by keeping the wine lean with a nice backsplash of acidity.

Sale: $998 per bottle or $100 per a case of twelve bottles. Domaine de Pellehaut Rosé Côtes de Gascogne 2017 Unlike Le Poussin, this rosé gets overlooked because Provence isn’t mentioned anywhere on the label. Because this wine falls victim of being judged by its label, rosé admirers miss out on its bright and citrusy notes that are accompanied by suggestions of fresh cranberries and floral undertones. The acidity pops from the glass, a commonplace component of wines from Gascogne.

Sale: $698

Sale: $1398

Day Owl Barbera Rosé California 2017 The Day Owl Rose is made from 100% Barbera. This makes it a unique offering because Barbera lends itself quite nicely to the production of rosé. With a good balance of floral notes, heavier set berry fruit, and bright herbs like mint this rosé is nothing short of exciting. Unlike the lighter rosés we have all become accustomed to, the Day Owl Rosé is one that pairs exceptionally well with grilled meats. With just the right amount of body and a touch of acidity, this wine was made to be enjoyed with a marbled ribeye.

Sale: $1098

Mapreco Rosé Vinho Verde 2017 One of the most talked about wine regions in the wine geekdom is, Portugal. The wines walk the line between Old World and New World. The Mapreco Rosé from Vinho Verde is just that. Like so many Portuguese wines the Mapreco Rosé is produced from Espadeiro, an unpronounceable indigenous varietal known for its intense flavors. Blackcurrant and basil lead to a fresh wine that finishes crisp.

Good Mental Health Is Essential May is Mental Health Awareness Month, an annual observance designed to increase awareness about mental health and mental illness. According to Mental Health America (MHA), the 2018 theme is Fitness#4Mind4Body. The theme “is a call to pay attention to both your physical health and your mental health, which can help achieve overall wellness…” Good mental health is essential to overall health and personal well-being. It also contributes to the ability to lead a healthy, balance and productive life. Emotional problems can impair a person’s thinking, feelings, and behavior and, overtime, can become increasingly serious and disabling. Unfortunately, many people do not seek treatment for mental health issues for a number of reasons. They may not be completely aware of the extent of their problem, they may be hesitant to make contact with a mental health professional because they fear they will be stigmatized, or they may not know how to access services.

Yet, overall the quality of life is greatly improved when a person with a mental health concern or problem seeks help and receives appropriate treatment from a qualified professional. Numerous suicides and suicide attempts have been attributed to undiagnosed and/or under treated mental illness. For this reason, The Jason Foundation supports the efforts of Mental Health America and Mental Health Awareness Month. The Jason Foundation, Inc. (JFI) is a nationally recognized leader in youth suicide prevention and awareness and provides programs to all 50 states at no cost through their National Network of Affiliate Offices. The programs are designed to help the public recognize when a young person is struggling with thoughts of suicide and where they can go for help. To find your local JFI affiliate office, go to: about-us/locations/ .

Anything and everything to kick off The Summer Season! Begin Planning Kids’ Summer Recreation Now

camps that fall within your budget. Take your son or daughter along so he or she can get a sense of what camp will be like.

Many families spend winter figuring out how to chase away cabin fever and endure frigid temperatures until spring and summer mercifully return. Parents thinking ahead to swimming pools and days lounging on the beach can put their daydreams to practical use by planning ahead for their youngsters’ summer vacations.

• Explore all options. Camps come in more flavors than ever before. Certain camps may be faith-based ministries while others may focus on particular sports. Band camps and art camps may appeal to creative kids. Also, there are plenty of general-interest camps that offer various activities without narrowing in on any particular one. Parents may need to choose between a sleepaway camp or day camps, depending on which camp experience they want for their children. • Inquire about camp schedules. While many camps are flexible, day camps do not have the same level of flexibility as afterschool programs. Arrangements will need to be made if care is required after regular camp hours. Speak with camp staff to see which types of after-hours programs, if any, are available.

Youth recreational programs and summer camps can bridge the gap in care between the end of school and the day when classes resume. Due in part to high demand, parents who want to place their kids in summer rec programs or summer camps should being vetting such programs and camps well in advance of summer. The following are a handful of tips for moms and dads who want their kids to have fun and fulfilling summers.

• Determine your camp budget. As varied as program offerings may be, camps also can vary greatly with regard to cost. Government-run camps may be less expensive than those offered by private companies. Day camps typically cost less than those that provide room and board. Find out if a particular organization subsidizes a portion of camp costs. Scouting programs often have a dedicated camp and may offer affordable options for scouts. Martial arts schools and dance centers frequently offer camp schedules.

• Ask for recommendations. Speak with fellow parents and trusted friends about where they send their children. Personal recommendations can be very helpful, providing firsthand insight into a particular camp or program. Schedule appointments to visit

Yoga For Building Bones At Emerson Hospital Did you know that micro cracks in the spine can cause it to slowly collapse? And that rounding the spine in a forward fold can cause vertebral fractures? Correct alignment is very important in building bones, and yoga is a great way to learn and practice this. A new, groundbreaking ten year study on over 500 people showed statistically significant improvement in bone density in the spine and femur from a regular yoga practice. The new Steinberg Wellness Center at Emerson Hospital is now offering a yoga class that will teach you these specially chosen postures, as well as other important yoga exercises and techniques. You don’t need to have osteoporosis or osteopenia to start a program of strengthen-

ing your bones. Prevention is just as important, since women start losing bone mass beginning at around age 30. And the DEXA bone scans are not nearly as accurate as the machine manufacturers would have you believe. Experts agree that you need to have the scan taken in the exact same spot, by the same technician, in order to effectively compare scans. This is why it’s so important to act preventively to ensure your bones stay thick and strong. Doctors agree that although exercising to build bones once you are diagnosed with osteoporosis or osteopenia, it is also key to begin building bones before they weaken in order to counter osteoporosis. The beauty of practicing yoga while strengthening your bones is that you reap all of the other benefits yoga offers: better posture, improved balance, greater range of motion, reduced anxiety, and even the peace and,

yes, bliss of finding yourself in a more relaxed state of mind throughout your day. In “Yoga for Building Bones”, you will learn specific poses that were chosen for safety and that strengthen parts of the body most vulnerable to fracture. The muscular tension of the poses effectively builds bone, according to authors of the study. Students will learn a 12-minute practice using these safe postures, with good alignment, that you can do at home. Designed for all fitness levels, students will learn Bridge, Sphinx, and Chair pose, along with many standing postures such as Triangle and Downward Facing Dog – all of them with easy, modified versions. The instructor is certain to offer several variations for each posture so that you find the one that is best suited for your strength and flexibility. Forty-four million Americans are known to have low bone mass. One in two women and one in four men over age 50 will have an osteoporosis-related fracture in his or her lifetime. And twenty-five percent of hip fractures end in death. So don’t be one of those people vulner-

able for a fracture and learn how to strengthen your bones the yoga way. Taught by an experienced yoga instructor with 18 years experience teaching yoga, Laraine Lippincott already teaches one of the most popular classes at the Wellness Center at Emerson Hospital (Gentle Yoga), and was featured on WCVB’s Chronicle last fall. With clear and detailed instructions, you will build strength, flexibility, enhance immunity, calm the mind, and enliven and deepen the breath, as well as strengthen your bones! A new session of Yoga for Building Bones is beginning on Wednesday, May 30, at 9AM. The session runs through June 27 and is $75. Go to and scroll down to yoga classes to find “Yoga for Building Bones” to sign up. Classes are held in the beautiful yoga studio at the brand new Steinberg Wellness Center for Mind and Body at Emerson Hospital, 310 Baker Road, Concord, MA (not at the hospital). MCC Awarded Grant To Help At-risk Immigrant/Refugee Youth Middlesex Community College has been awarded a oneyear, $10,000 grant from the John H. & H. Naomi Tomfohrde Foundation to help immigrant/refugee youth improve their English skills and academics through the college’s English Language Institute (ELI) and Out of School Youth Development Center (OSYDC).

saturday, may 19, 2018

“This grant allows Middlesex to serve one of our most vulnerable populations: refugee and immigrant youth who are at-risk of not completing high school,” said MCC President James Mabry. “With assistance from the Tomfohrde Foundation, we will be able to help these young people improve their English, complete high school, and move on to college or join the workforce.” The grant-funded project will recruit 60 Lowell-area students – ages 16 to 24 – to enroll

in MCC’s ELI and OSYDC, explained Maria Cunha, OSYDC Program Director. Predominantly refugees from Syria, Iraq and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the targeted youth are either failing or not completing high school due to lack of English or other academic skills. These students will receive a combination of special support services, including one-on-one assessment, tutoring, testing, and enrollment in academic and language remediation courses, continued Cunha. The goal is to prepare them to sit for the high

May, July Peak Months For Grilling Fires Grilling season is right around the corner and grill gurus everywhere are preparing for many family parties and barbecues. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) encourages grillers to pay attention to safety during the spring and summer months when home fires involving grilling incidents occur most often. In 2011 – 2015, fire departments responded to an average of 9,600 home fires involving grills, hibachis or barbecues each year. That number included 4,100

structure fires and 5,500 outside or unclassified fires, according to NFPA. These fires caused an average of 10 civilian deaths, 160 civilian injuries, and $133 million in direct property damage per year. July is the peak month for grilling fires followed by May, June and August. According to the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association, 73 percent of consumers grill on the Fourth of July, 60 percent do so on Memorial Day, 58 percent grill on Labor Day, and 45 percent grill on Father’s Day. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s National Electronic Surveillance

System, grills caused an average 4,500 non-thermal contact burns in patients seen at emergency departments in 2012 – 2016. Children under five suffered 1,600 or 35 percent of these burns. This type of injury typically occurred when someone bumped into, touched or fell on the grill, grill part or hot coals. watch?v=65RCHLNIKa8 Caption: NFPA provides grilling fire safety tips to consumers NFPA reminds everyone that all types of grills pose a risk for fires and burn injuries. Place the grill well away from siding and deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches, per manufacturer’s instructions. According to NFPA’s most recent fact sheet, 11 percent of home grill structure fires began when an outside wall caught fire and in roughly one of every five fires, the grill had not been cleaned. “As grilling season approaches, it is important that grillers review basic safety tips to ensure they are grilling properly and safely,” said Lorraine Carli, vice president of Outreach and Advocacy for NFPA. “Failing to

properly clean the grill or having the grill too close to something that could burn are the leading causes of fires. Good practice dictates that home chefs check for damage before using the grill for the first time each year, and to check the entire grill regularly.” watch?v=mpDhUssEgP0&t=3s Caption: NFPA offers tips for checking damage to propane tank hoses before using. Here are additional grilling fire safety tips: Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors Children and pets should be at least three feet away from the grill area Keep your grill clean by removing grease and fat buildup from the gates and trays below Never leave your grill unattended For additional information and resources including tips for outdoor cooking with portable grills, visit or download NFPA’s safety tip sheet on grilling for easy access. They sing an anthem on the first Sunday of each month and for special services at Christmas and Easter and other occasions. In addition, the Youth Choir sings Choral Evensong twice each year. Weekly Thursday rehearsals are designed around the Royal School of Church Music program, teaching musical skills and vocal technique in the context of our Liturgical tradition. A first-time participant may feel as if he or she has joined in a conversation already begun, but eventually the wash of music and liturgy carries one into a new sense of God’s presence in the rhythm of daily life. Choral Evensong is sung daily in many

Small class size ensures that students receive individualized attention and a program tailored to meet their needs. Two days a week, students work as interns in competitive employment situations in office and business support environments. Transition students may participate in all Middlesex student activities and student support services. Graduates of MCC’s Transition Program receive a Certificate of Completion in Office and Business Support Skills and typically obtain employment in office support, business support, or retail support. Transition Program candidates should have a high school diploma, GED credential or certificate of completion, interest in training for entry-level work in

Here’s How It Works:

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
