Rosé season has officially arrived and with so many to choose from, the task of picking one can be daunting. So, in order to help guide you in the right direction, here are a few rosés to get you started this season. Commanderie de Peyrassol Rosé Côtes de Provence 2017

Le Poussin by Sacha Lichine Rosé Vin de France 2017

This is the more serious and traditional rosé, kind of like that grandfather that walked uphill both ways to school and home. Even though this is meant for the wine buff, it is still exceptionally friendly to those still learning to appreciate a good rosé. Here the minerality sneaks up sooner by being an integral part of the palate. Citrus notes, bay leaf, and crushed sandstone make up the wine which is only enhanced by the tingling acidity that makes your mouth water for more.

From the dominant wine team made up of Sacha Lichine and Patrick Léon comes our best selling rosé, Le Poussin. This light-bodied yet enticingly fruity rosé has become a mainstay for us not only because this wine offers everything one could want from a rosé, it does so in a cute package and for a bargain. Raspberries, mint, and peach blossom are found on the palate. The minerality and bright acidity bring up the finish making this the porch pounder we have all been looking for.

Sale: $1598

Domaine Lafage ‘Miraflors’ Rosé Côtes Catalanes 2017 Domaine Lafage might be one of the most intriguing producers from southern France. Located in the Roussillon, Domaine Lafage and its wines are only rivaled by those across the border in Spain. Clean, fresh, palate engulfing, and flavorful are just a few adjectives to best describe the wines Domaine Lafage produce, and the Miraflors Rosé doesn’t lack any of them. While having the upfront fruit Domaine Lafage is known for, it still gives a nod to the Provencal style of rosé by keeping the wine lean with a nice backsplash of acidity.

Sale: $998 per bottle or $100 per a case of twelve bottles. Domaine de Pellehaut Rosé Côtes de Gascogne 2017 Unlike Le Poussin, this rosé gets overlooked because Provence isn’t mentioned anywhere on the label. Because this wine falls victim of being judged by its label, rosé admirers miss out on its bright and citrusy notes that are accompanied by suggestions of fresh cranberries and floral undertones. The acidity pops from the glass, a commonplace component of wines from Gascogne.

Sale: $698

Sale: $1398

Day Owl Barbera Rosé California 2017 The Day Owl Rose is made from 100% Barbera. This makes it a unique offering because Barbera lends itself quite nicely to the production of rosé. With a good balance of floral notes, heavier set berry fruit, and bright herbs like mint this rosé is nothing short of exciting. Unlike the lighter rosés we have all become accustomed to, the Day Owl Rosé is one that pairs exceptionally well with grilled meats. With just the right amount of body and a touch of acidity, this wine was made to be enjoyed with a marbled ribeye.

Sale: $1098

Mapreco Rosé Vinho Verde 2017 One of the most talked about wine regions in the wine geekdom is, Portugal. The wines walk the line between Old World and New World. The Mapreco Rosé from Vinho Verde is just that. Like so many Portuguese wines the Mapreco Rosé is produced from Espadeiro, an unpronounceable indigenous varietal known for its intense flavors. Blackcurrant and basil lead to a fresh wine that finishes crisp.

A Friend In Need A Friend in Need (AFIN) is an arm of the South Acton Congregational Church (SACC) It is a small, all-volunteer organization dedicated to offering financial aid to people in need in the Acton/Boxboro/Maynard area. We learned of a family having financial difficulties and missing rent payments. The wife works part-time at a minimum-wage

A Friend in Need provided payment of a portion of the back rent, giving them some breathing room. Usually we have a one-time limit for help given to any family, but due to the economy we are trying to be a bit more flexible about that. Our mission is to provide immediate help until the family can receive more substantial aid from other agencies. Much of our money comes through pleas published in our

The Plight Of Our Native Bees Economics, Ecology & The Plight of our Native Bees Wednesday, May 23rd 7:00 PM Pollinators are declining at an unprecedented rate worldwide due to human-induced rapid environmental change. These declines pose a significant threat to our food supply and consequently, there has been major focus on conservation strategies aimed to increase pollinator abundance in agricultural areas. However, the needs of 98% of wild pollinator species are not considered in such strategies

saturday, may 19, 2018

because they do not play a major role in crop pollination. Without these ‘keystone’ wild pollinator species, we would lose most of our native flowering plants. Join Dr. Robert J. Gegear from Worcester Polytechnic Institute for a discussion on how you can preserve our native pollinator diversity. Dr. Robert J. Gegear has been studying the neuroecology and conservation of pollinator-plant systems native to North America for almost 30 years. He is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology and Biotechnology at WPI and Director of the New England Beecology Research Program, which aims to use citizen scientists in order to collect large amounts of ecological data on bumblebees and the plants that they pollinate across the state. His efforts are already greatly accelerating the development of effective conservation and restoration strategies for threatened bumblebee species in Eastern North America. This presentation is part of the Speaker Series sponsored by

Anything and ever ything to Begin Planning Kids’ Summer Recreation Now Many families spend winter figuring out how to chase away cabin fever and endure frigid temperatures until spring and summer mercifully return. Parents thinking ahead to swimming pools and days lounging on the beach can put their daydreams to practical use by planning ahead for their youngsters’ summer vacations. Youth recreational programs and summer camps can bridge the gap in care between the end of school and the day when classes resume. Due in part to high demand, parents who want to place their kids in summer rec programs or summer camps should being vetting such programs and camps well in advance of summer. The following are a handful of tips for moms and dads who want their kids to have fun and fulfilling summers. • Ask for recommendations. Speak with fellow parents and trusted friends about where they send their children. Personal recommendations can be very helpful, providing firsthand insight

into a particular camp or program. Schedule appointments to visit camps that fall within your budget. Take your son or daughter along so he or she can get a sense of what camp will be like. • Explore all options. Camps come in more flavors than ever before. Certain camps may be faith-based ministries while others may focus on particular sports. Band camps and art camps may appeal to creative kids. Also, there are plenty of general-interest camps that offer various activities without narrowing in on any particular one. Parents may need to choose between a sleepaway camp or day camps, depending on which camp experience they want for their children. • Inquire about camp schedules. While many camps are flexible, day camps do not have the same level of flexibility as afterschool programs. Arrangements will need to be made if care is required after regular camp hours. Speak with camp staff to see which types of after-hours programs, if any, are available. • Determine your camp budget. As varied as program offerings may be, camps also can vary greatly with regard to cost. Government-run camps may be less expensive than those offered by private companies. Day camps typically cost less than those that provide room and board. Find out if a particular organization subsidizes a portion of camp costs. Scouting programs often have

kick off The Summer Season! a dedicated camp and may offer affordable options for scouts. Martial arts schools and dance centers frequently offer camp schedules. If camp seems out of reach, look into local summer recreation programs at parks or schools. Such programs may not be as extensive as those offered by camps, but they can quell kids’ boredom and keep children occupied during the day. In addition to camp, remember to plan for some free days so children can just enjoy some downtime. Such days can break up the monotony of a routine and provide kids and families time to relax together. Summer recreation may be far off, but it is never too early to start making summer plans, including finding camps and other activities for kids. TF162873

Make sure everyone on the boat wears a life jacket, and follow proper boating protocol throughout your trip. • Dehydration: The body needs extra water on hot days, especially when spending ample time outdoors. Dehydration can cause dizziness and dry mouth and may make you feel faint. Always drink plenty of water and avoid alcoholic beverages and soft drinks, which can contribute to dehydration when consumed in excess. HW156272

Safeguard Yourself From Summertime Ailments And Accidents Summer is often marked by vacations, recreational events and relaxing moments spent by the pool or on the beach. But when the weather heats up, so can potential health hazards that can ruin all of the fun. The following are some of the more common summertime ailments and how to avoid them. • Lawn and garden injuries: Lawn and garden injuries may not be common, but men, women and children should exercise caution when using lawn and garden equipment. Wear protective shoes and gloves and safety goggles. Remember to turn off any motorized tools before attempting to repair or unclog the blades. • Swimmer’s ear: Water that remains in the ear canal after swimming can make the ear a breeding ground for swimmer’s ear, which is a bacterial infection. If water remains in your ear for more than one night, visit an ear, nose and throat specialist. 5520 20 • Insect bites and stings: Insects return when temperatures rise. Mosquitoes may be the biggest nuisance, but biting flies and wasps also make formidable foes. Use insect repellent to keep the bugs away. Wear long pants and check for ticks after hiking. • Boating accidents: Many boating accidents can be attributed to inexperience with the vessel and failure to take proper safety precautions on the water.

Boxborough To Honor Fallen Soldiers In Memorial Day Parade The Boxborough Public Celebrations & Ceremonies Committee would like to invite all residents and friends to march in the annual Boxborough

Memorial Day Parade to honor fallen soldiers. This event is one of the town’s most treasured events as it appropriately reflects the sentiment and importance of the holiday in a traditional New England way. The Memorial Day Parade will begin at the corner of Hill Road and Wetherbee Lane on Monday, May 28th. Participants will march, pausing for reflections at (1) North Cemetery, (2) Town Hall, and (3) South Cemetery. The parade begins at 8:30am (marchers are asked to meet by 8 a.m). All town veterans are invited to join the parade as Grand Marshals by either marching or riding in a car available for veterans. The Boxborough Minutemen will conduct a musket salute at both cemeteries as the names of fallen soldiers are read. Three Blanchard 6th graders will read their original essays, both the Blanchard Elementary Band and the R.J. Grey Junior High Band will provide patriotic music throughout the parade, and local girl scouts and boy scouts will also march. Parking for the parade is avail-

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, an annual observance designed to increase awareness about mental health and mental illness. According to Mental Health America (MHA), the 2018 theme is Fitness#4Mind4Body. The theme “is a call to pay attention to both your physical health and your mental health, which can help achieve overall wellness…” Good mental health is essential to overall health and personal well-being. It also contributes to the ability to lead a healthy, balance and productive life. Emotional problems can impair a person’s thinking, feelings, and behavior and, overtime, can become increasingly serious and disabling. Unfortunately, many people do not seek treatment for mental health issues for a number of reasons. They may not be completely aware of the extent of their problem, they may be hesitant to make contact with a mental health professional because they fear they will be stigmatized, or they may

action unlimited not know how to access services. Yet, overall the quality of life is greatly improved when a person with a mental health concern or problem seeks help and receives appropriate treatment from a qualified professional. Numerous suicides and suicide attempts have been attributed to undiagnosed and/or under treated mental illness. For this reason, The Jason Foundation supports the efforts of Mental Health America and Mental Health Awareness Month. The Jason Foundation, Inc. (JFI) is a nationally recognized leader in youth suicide prevention and awareness and provides programs to all 50 states at no cost through their National Network of Affiliate Offices. The programs are designed to help the public recognize when a young person is struggling with thoughts of suicide and where they can go for help. To find your local JFI affiliate office, go to: about-us/locations/ .
