The library is now accepting enrollments for the next session of TOT TIME, a children’s reading program involving singalong, bring-along, dress-up and crafts, which will run for nine (9) classes from April 3, 2017 through June 12, 2017.

Exploring Race Workshop Fostering Racial Justice Group (FRJG) is facilitating a threeweek series intended to provide frameworks for understanding race, bias, and the history of racism. Workshops are scheduled

from 7pm to 9:15 pm, beginning on Thursday March 23rd, and will meet on March 30th, and April 13th. The first workshop will meet at Sargent Memorial Library, 427 Massachusetts Ave., Boxborough. The following workshops will meet at UCC – Boxborough, 723 Massachusetts Avenue, across from Town Hall.

The workshop will be facilitated by experienced educators and FRJG members. Light refreshments will be served.

Many people living in our communities are afraid. These fears are exacerbated by the current political climate. Fears are on both sides – whether you know someone who is the target of hatred, or you’re fearful based on what is being said about groups of people nationally. FRJG knows that hatred is not the solution and wants to answer the question, how did we get to this place? Generations of segregated living leads to misunderstanding and discrimination.

Roland Gibson, a retired elementary school principal, former School Committee chairman, and educational consultant, is a local activist and long-time area resident. Paul Di Paolo is an independent security consultant and recently retired senior administrator from the Mass. Department of Correction who is committed to working to reduce incarceration through education.

FRJG was established in 2015 in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement after some members attended a meeting

with police chiefs in Littleton, MA. Shortly thereafter, FRJG received a grant from CHNA 15, DoN funding from Winchester Hospital, to provide anti-bias and racial justice trainings to Boxborough and Carlisle police as well as Boxborough town employees. In conjunction with the grant, FRJG is offering a series of community discussions and workshops to support people from Boxborough and surrounding communities in their effort to address equity and justice.

The three FRJG workshops will be interactive using experiential exercises, discussion and video clips. Workshop participants are encouraged to attend all

three workshops. The first workshop will introduce foundational concepts, terms, the history of racism in the US, and current events. Acton Boxborough School District The Acton Boxborough School District is looking for community feedback! The district is beginning an elementary building project and is currently evaluating numerous options. They range from either a single school program per building, or multiple school programs per building (e.g., single, double/twin school, or triple school). Maynard’s MCC/MRC is part of a nationwide effort to establish teams of local volunteers who contribute their time and skills to work with local officials helping to prepare their Towns to respond to a natural disaster. We are one of 34 cities and towns west of Boston that also share regional plans and resources for emergency response within the Region 4A Public Health Coalition.

Maynard has a core of local volunteers who have been learning, planning and working to develop and expand Maynard’s resources and events. Our Annual Meeting not only serves to update our volunteers on the past year’s efforts and upcoming plans, but it also serves to re-connect with volunteers who may not have been active lately and want to reengage in their volunteer status – all are welcome!

More volunteers are always

needed for Maynard to effectively respond to large and small-scale events – from opening shelters during ice storms and influenza outbreak vaccination clinics, to staffing first-aid tents at the annual Road Race and Relay for Life. The MCC/MRC also offers public education and recruiting opportunities at events like Maynard Fest and the Truck Day. We have many new and exciting opportunities in store for our volunteers this coming year! You DO NOT need to be medically training to join the MCC/MRC! Our volunteers include people with medical AND non-medical and behavioral backgrounds – for every medically-trained volunteer, up to 3 non-medical volunteers are needed! Come join us and share your skills as communication experts, security personnel, administrative/clerical staff, data entry specialists, greeters, or one of the many other non-medical positions available.

A Friend In Need A Friend in Need (AFIN) is an arm of the South Acton Congregational Church (SACC) It is a small, all-volunteer organization dedicated to offering financial aid to people in need in the Acton/Boxboro/Maynard area.

We received a request from an advocate for a disabled Senior who was experiencing financial difficulties. He fell behind in his rent, and A Friend in Need was able to provide assistance to help keep him current.

Usually we have a one-time limit for help given to any family, but due to the economy we are trying to be a bit more flex-

ible about that. Our mission is to provide immediate help until the family can receive more substantial aid from other agencies. Much of our money comes through pleas published in our local newspapers and from generous community residents.

Acton/Boxborough United Way and the Maynard Community Chest support us through grant money. Besides SACC, several other churches support us through their Mission Funds.

Depending on the resources we have on hand, we can usually provide between $300 and $800 to the needy family.

Our mailbox is located at the South Acton Congregational

Church and the church generously pays for our telephone answering service. Our volunteers pay for postage and all other costs, so we are able to give away 100% of the money we receive.

AFIN will consider helping anyone who is recommended by clergy or social service professionals associated with a local agency. Local clergy and social service agencies know how to contact A Friend in Need on

Volunteers Needed For Spring Vacation Bike Camp Volunteers are needed during April school vacation week, April 17 -21, to assist at a bike camp in Groton for children with special needs. Emerson Hospital’s Center for Rehabilitative and Sports Therapies is hosting the second annual camp, called iCan Shine, which is open to people who are at least eight years old who have special needs and are able to walk without an assistive device. Trained counselors and volunteer spotters will work with campers to teach them how to ride a conventional bike. The camp is held in conjunction with Lawrence Academy.

Volunteers need to be at least sixteen years old and be available for one or two 75 minute bike sessions each day Monday through Friday during April school vacation week. All ses-

The Middlesex County 4-H Fair takes place on August 25, 26 and 27 and presents the classic New England fair experience and family, friendly fun for all ages. All products offered for sale at the Fair must be family appropriate, agricultural, hand-made or related products.

This agricultural event of the

year has been held at 55 South Chelmsford Road in Westford since 1956. The fair showcases approximately 350 youth exhibits from animals to static exhibits. A dedicated group of hundreds of volunteers work throughout the year to prepare the fairgrounds for the weekend of festivities.

The fair boasts approximately 5000 attendees over the course of the 3-day weekend.

Emerson Hospital’s Wellness Center GirlPower! Be Who You Are, an empowerment program for 8 to 12 year old girls in its 10th year and sponsored by Emerson Hospital’s Wellness Center, will hold its next session on Sunday, March 26th from 1 to 5pm. This 4 hour workshop will take place at the Alzheimer’s unit of a Concord assisted living. People who struggle with Alzheimer’s and dementia can be isolated and lonely; however, it is possible to connect and communicate with these individuals in a positive way. The girls will learn these communication skills by participating in a variety of activities with the residents including movement, conversation, and a gardening project. During the afternoon there will be time to talk, journal and learn how to be with individuals with dementia, respectfully and compassionately. The focus of GirlPower! this

year is community service as it provides a window to the needs of others in the world while it helps to build empathy and compassion. Fugitive Stories Showcases Community “Trust” On Sunday, March 26th at 6:30pm Fugitive Stories explores the theme “Trust” and will shine their spotlight on Open Table, a non-profit operating in Concord and Maynard that offers a weekly community supper and food pantry. Open Table’s staff, volunteers and guests are dynamically involved in creating an atmosphere of trust, sometimes in contrast to the loss of it.

Is Your Teenager Struggling With Behavioral Challenges?

Parents and families today are often living a daily routine overwhelmed with stress and anxiety!

Children and adolescents often struggle with a wide range of emotional and behavioral disturbances such as withdrawal from friends, school avoidance or sudden change in grades, running away, defiance toward authority at home and in school, anxiety and depression, eating disorders, ADD/ ADHD, abuse of alcohol and drugs, attachment issues and self-harm.

NAMI MASS, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, Massachusetts, is offering “NAMI Basics”, specially designed for parents and other caregivers of adolescents and children living with emotional or behavioral challenges recognized before age 14. The course is taught by trained volunteer teachers who themselves are parents/caregivers of children living with emotional difficulties. This structure creates an intimacy that few programs possess and consequently, a program now whose capacities are unparalleled. It is an evidenced based program and recognized across the country.

The “Basics” program runs for seven consecutive weekly classes each lasting 2 ½ hours. There is no cost to participants and all

materials are provided by NAMI. The programs goal is to provide the fundamentals of caring for you, your family and your child with emotional difficulties. Up to date current information on common disorders in children, current research related to the biology on these disorders and the evidenced-based, most effective treatment strategies, available along with various therapies and medications sometimes utilized as part of treatment will be covered.

In addition workshops in problem solving, listening and communication skills are highlighted. You will learn about methods of working with both the school and the health care systems and have exposure to personal record keeping set-up that has proven to be effective for parent/caregivers in their interactions with these systems. Also, emphasis on personal advocacy for your child in locating appropriate supports and services within the community will be covered. And you will learn ~ You are not alone!

Blood And Platelet Donors Needed Following Winter Storm The American Red Cross is urging all eligible donors throughout Massachusetts to give blood or platelets following the recent winter storm, which forced 25 area blood drives to cancel, causing about 760 donations to go uncollected. There is a critical need for platelet and type O negative donors.

“The need for blood and platelets is constant despite the weather,” said Nick Gehrig, communications director, Red Cross Blood Services. “Platelet donors and blood donors of all types, especially type O negative, are urged to give when it’s safe to travel to an area blood drive or donation center.”

Platelets are tiny cells in blood that form clots and stop bleeding.

Although they are needed for many reasons, cancer patients often rely on platelets during treatment.

Type O negative donors are an important part of the Red Cross trauma team. Because it’s

the universal blood type and can be transfused to patients of any blood type, type O negative blood is what emergency room personnel reach for when there is no time to determine the blood type of patients in the most serious situations.

How to help Eligible donors can find a blood donation opportunity and schedule an appointment to donate by using the free Blood Donor App, visiting redcrossblood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). The Red Cross is extending hours at many donation sites for more donors to give blood or platelets. Overall, the Red Cross has added nearly 200 hours to blood donation centers and community blood drives across the country over the next few weeks.

Donation appointments and completion of a RapidPass online health history questionnaire are encouraged to help speed up the donation process.

A Maundy Thursday candlelight communion service will be held in FPC’s sanctuary on Thursday, April 13, at 7 p.m.

The story of Jesus’ final days will be told, focusing on the Passover meal that he shared with his disciples and what this ritual of “breaking bread together” means to us today. In this service, FPC honors its Unitarian Universalist history and celebrates its Christian roots, while reaching beyond to the broader message of community and the ministry of humble service. The historic communion silver from both FPC and the Universalist Church of South Acton will be used. The service will be led by FPC’s minister, The Rev. MHS Hall Of Fame Seeking Nominations For Induction The Maynard High School Hall of Fame (MHSAHF) was established in 2006 to honor and perpetuate the memory of all for-

mer Maynard students, coaches and associated persons who have brought pride and distinction to the Maynard school system, the Town of Maynard and themselves, primarily through their high school athletic endeavors.

It will be an ongoing opportunity for Maynard residents to continue the tradition of excellence that has been characteristic of Maynard athletics.

Our 7th Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony/Banquet is scheduled for Saturday, November 18, 2017 at the Maynard Lodge of Elks and we need your help in identifying potential inductees to the MHSAHF, who, if selected, will be celebrated at that event!

Our past banquets have been very well received by the inductees and the general public.

Robert Creeley Award Winner Reads Poet Marie Howe, former New York State Poet Laureate, will read in Acton on Wednesday, March 29, at 7:30 p.m. at the Acton-Boxborough Regional High School, 36 Charter Road.

She is the recipient of the 17th Annual Robert Creeley Award, selected by the Acton-based nonprofit, the Robert Creeley Foundation.
