WWI Pilgrimage To Europe Program Guest speaker Tom Sommer highlights his “Trip of a Lifetime,” a military history pilgrimage to Europe on Saturday January 18th at 1:00 PM. The museum is located on the 3rd floor of 94 Jackson Road and will be open from 10 AM to 3 PM on this day. An amateur historian with a lifelong interest in military history, Sommer spent two November 2018 weeks in the Meuse Argonne part of France for the Centennial of the end of World War I. Then he spent another two weeks in Germany and Poland, visiting museums, historical sites, and retracing his great grandfather’s steps. He will present an illustrated look at his trip and display some artifacts from battlefields in France. Sommer is an avid military reenactor, helping bring history alive of Civil War, World War I and World War

II days. A native of Carlisle, he has spent most of his adult life in Groton. He earned a Bachelor’s degree at Northeastern and a Master’s degree in electrical engineering at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. He brought his engineering skills to bear especially in the field of communications and is now retired. Sommer is a member of the Board of Directors of the Museum. ****************************************

Westford Celebrates Women’s Right To Vote The Westford Historical Society and Museum, in partnership with the League of Women Voters of Westford and Westford Cultural Council, is proud to host a series of events looking into the 19th Amendment and its legacy through book discussions, historical interpretations and more. Votes for Women: Massachusetts Leaders in the Woman Suffrage Movement, a book reading and talk by Barbara Berenson Date; Monday February 10 at 7pm Location: Westford Museum, 2 Boston Rd, Westford Barbara Berenson, author of Massachusetts in the Woman Suffrage Movement: Revolutionary Reformers, will discuss the woman suffrage movement and give local

suffragists the attention they deserve. Massachusetts was at the center of the national struggle for woman suffrage. Long before the Civil War, Lucy Stone and other abolitionists launched the organized women’s movement at the first National Woman’s Rights Convention, held in Worcester. After the war, state activists founded the Boston-based American Woman Suffrage Association to lead campaigns across the country. Their work laid the foundation for the next generation of suffragists to triumph over tradition. Berenson will also address the battle over historical memory that long obscured the state’s leading role. A 20/20 Perspective on Women’s Rights, 1920 – 2020, a talk by Barbara Berenson and panel discussion from notable Westford women in politics Date: Thursday February 27 at 7pm Location: Westford Museum, 2 Boston Rd, Westford BarbaraBerenson’s second talk will address women’s rights after they finally achieved access to the ballot in 1920. How have women fared politically and legally over the past century? Berenson will consider how women activists have built alliances and shaped laws in an effort to combat stereotypes, discrimination, and gender-based violence at home, at work, and in the public sphere. She will review some of the key developments over the past century and include a discussion of the long and still-ongoing campaign for the Equal Rights Amendment. She will also discuss the historical connections between women who opposed suffrage and

Tabitha I’m Tabitha, a sweet and petite girl kitty, also known around my foster home as “mama-mama”. I arrived at Carmah quite pregnant. Now that I have successfully raised my kittens, I am ready to go to my own forever home. I was a very serious and dedicated mother, so I’m hoping that in my next home I am pampered to the utmost - I have earned it! I am not shy but I need to be reminded how to play and relax. I do purr when I am picked up. I am more of a “next to you” cat than a lap cat, but I might be able to learn! But oh, please scratch my chin and my neck, and I will close my eyes in pleasure and purr away! I’m not too fond of the respectful dogs in my foster home, so I’m sorry about this, but no dogs please! I’m almost two years old, very tiny, and in fine health. Will you be the one who helps me remember the joys of being a cat?

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Transition Smoothly After Relocating People move for various reasons. Some have outgrown their existing homes and need something bigger, while others move to downsize. Regardless of why people move, moving occurs more often than you might think. The U.S. Census Bureau says one in nine people relocated in 2015 to a new neighborhood, a new state or even across the country. Relocating, whether it’s around the corner or miles away, affects people’s lives in many ways. A smooth transition to a new place involves understanding the process and getting the support necessary to make the move a success. Research potential destinations Give ample thought to where you might live before uprooting yourself and your family if you have one. The career resource Change Recruitment suggests using the internet as much as possible to learn about the location. Sites like Niche can paint a picture of an area, providing information regarding its demographics, points of interest, schools, and much more. However, an inperson visit will be needed to get a true feel for the neighborhood. Understand the costs Apart from the fees associated with buying a home, relocating involves hiring movers, unpacking belongings, temporary storage rentals, charges to turn on/off utilities, repairs for the new home, and several other expenses.

If you’re moving because of a career opportunity, the company may contribute to some of the moving costs. Check with a human resources professional to determine if the company provides relocation compensation. Get out and meet people Use every opportunity to meet neighbors and people with shared interests. Attend community events and/or school functions. Some employers may have meet-andgreet events. Online services like Meetup list groups of like-minded people who may periodically meet up in your community. The sooner you make friends and acquaintances in your new town or city, the more likely you are to feel at home. With some planning and a little assistance, relocating can go smoothly.

You’re invited to add a picture to your article when you email or send in your non-profit community events and announcements! We will pick a few articles to include with pictures. Articles run on a space available basis.

Send us your news and a relevant picture today! Do you want your non-profit community event advertised FOR FREE? Write us an article on the event, attach a picture (if applicable), and we’ll publish it, on a space available basis. Be sure to tell us where it is, when it is, and how to get more information. Deadline is Wednesday at 4:00pm for the following Friday’s edition of Action Unlimited. Action Unlimited reserves the right to edit or decline to print any articles. Non-profit organizations only. Stock the car for roadside emergencies Disasters can happen in a flash, and having a plan in place for common emergency situations can make it easier to handle adverse conditions, particularly when away from home. According to MFASCO Health and Safety, a supplier of first aid supplies and kits, 90 percent of people do not carry first aid supplies or other emergency gear in their vehicles. Among those who may carry supplies, 30 percent never check to determine if they’re in good working order. The National Safety Council says that drivers should always keep emergency supply kits in the trunks or cargo areas of their vehicles. Kits should be inspected every six months, and worn out items should be replaced. Roadside emergency kits can make the difference between getting back on the road safely or being stranded for hours. Such kits also may help prevent or treat injuries, potentially saving lives. Weather should be considered when preparing vehicle emergency kits, which should include the following. • A properly inflated spare tire and tire-changing equipment • Jumper cables • A multipurpose utility tool and/or tool kit • Flashlight and batteries • Flares or triangle reflectors • An extra quart of motor oil • A first-aid kit containing at the least, gauze, tape, bandages, antibiotic ointment, aspirin, nonlatex gloves, scissors, hydrocortisone, thermometer, tweezers, and instant cold compress • A blanket • A tire pressure gauge • A portable tire inflator • Paper towels • Nonperishable, high-energy foods • Drinking water • A reflective vest • Duct tape • A fire extinguisher • An ice scraper • A folding shovel • Coolant and washer fluid • A phone charger • Baby/child supplies, if pertinent • Rope Keep roadside emergency kits organized at all times. Store items securely in a milk crate, box or backpack so they are always readily available. People should familiarize themselves with the items in the kit so they know how to use them correctly and quickly. With some planning and organization, drivers can have the supplies they will need to make it through roadside emergencies safely.

How To Find Time To Travel This Year Travel is a popular pastime that many people plan to embrace upon retiring. However, adults need not wait for their golden years to arrive to take to the friendly skies or answer the call of the nearest highway. Would-be travelers who feel that traveling is a luxury they can’t afford may be surprised to learn just how many people travel each year. According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization, there were 1.4 billion international tourist arrivals across the globe in 2018. Many of those 1.4 billion people no doubt had professional and personal obligations that could have prevented them from traveling, but they still found a way to head off for parts unknown. A lack of time to travel is something people often cite when lamenting their inability to get out and see the world. In many instances, that perceived lack of time can be overcome, paving the way for potentially lifechanging trips. • Use your vacation days . to go on vacation. A recent report from researchers with the U.S. Travel Association, Oxford Economics and Ipsos found that Americans failed to use 768 million vacation days in 2018. And that’s just American workers. A recent study from the travel site found that Canadians allow tens of millions of vacation days to go unused each year. Studies have shown that using vacation time can make employees feel better about their jobs and even contribute positively to their productivity. Unused vacation days are days that could be spent traveling, and all professionals have to do is take the days off, which many professionals have in abundance. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that the average American worker with five years of experience at a company was given 15 days of paid vacation per year, while those with 20 years of experience were given 20 paid vacation days. In Canada, the study found that the average Canadian receives roughly 17 days off per year. • Make better use of weekends. Professionals who work traditional Monday through Friday schedules have nearly one-third of the year off already. Weekends add up to 104 days per year, and that’s 104 days people could be traveling. Even if you’re limited to local trav-

pg. 17

eling on weekends, those 104 built-in off days provide substantial time to get out and see some sights. • Turn traditional weekends into three-day weekends. Speaking of weekends, professionals who feel they have more vacation and personal time than they could possibly use should consider turning more traditional weekends into three-day weekends. You likely won’t fall far behind at work by taking a few random Mondays off per year, but that extra day can provide ample time to travel. In addition, Monday flights tend to be less expensive than Sunday flights, making travel more affordable. • Work remotely, even if it’s just for one or two weeks per year. Technology has made it easier than ever to work outside of a traditional office setting. Professionals who want to travel more should inquire about working remotely for one or two weeks per year. Doing so can afford more time to travel as professionals can simply take their work with them on the road. However, do your homework before making such arrangements for overseas travel, as some countries may forbid foreign workers from working within their borders without first obtaining work visas, which can be difficult if not impossible to get. Traveling takes time, but many professionals have more time on their hands than they might think. When you have a great and difficult task, something perhaps almost impossible, if you only work a little at a time, every day a little, suddenly the work will finish itself. -Isak Dinesen FREE!

Intelligent Lives Please come on Saturday, January 25, at 7 PM to watch and discuss Intelligent Lives at First Church Unitarian, 19 Foster St., LIttleton. This film stars three pioneering young adults with intellectual disabilities who challenge perceptions of intelligence as they navigate high school, college, and the workforce. Actor Chris Cooper narrates and contextualizes the lives of the central characters through the emotional personal story of his his, Jesse, as the film unpacks the shameful and ongoing track record of intelligence testing the United States. This free film series explores the lives and experiences of the “other” and expands our awareness of our neighbors as well as often marginalized individuals and groups. Please join us for a lively discussion. All are welcome.

I feel the need of relations and friendship, of affection, of friendly intercourse...I cannot miss these things without feeling, as does any other intelligent man, a void and a deep need.
