Designed for War, Used for Games

In September last year I wrote about packing up our Noetzie beach house that had sadly reached the end of its life.

It has now been rebuilt and we’ve begun unpacking the furniture from storage.

One thing to emerge was the old “gun box” that belonged to my Knysna grandparents. It’s a long Oregon pine box with a hinged lid that my grandfather apparently brought home aer the Boer War (He joined the Brish army at 17.)

I don’t know what my grandfather used it for, but aer he married my grandmother converted it into a bankie, with a padded top and cover, that stood on the landing in their Victorian house.

When the gun box came to Noetzie we used it to store beach bats, Frisbees and the many board games that are staple fare in beach houses.

While unpacking I looked at the gun box afresh, and wondered what kind of weapons it had carried.

I searched online, finding plenty about the weapons used on both sides in the Anglo-Boer War, but nothing about the containers they came in.

What I did come across in my browsing were accounts of the dreadful concentraon camps set up by the Brish. The Brish didn’t care about the old Boer Republics unl diamonds were discovered and then they simply annexed them in 1880. The Boers, who had le the Cape to escape Brish rule, resisted, which led to the First Anglo-Boer War. Surprisingly, Britain was defeated.

Later when gold was discovered the Brish tried again to gain control of the Republics, and this led to the Second Anglo-Boer War from1899 to 1902.

The Boers knew they could not take on the mighty Brish army in tradional warfare – they did not have enough men or weapons –so they engaged in guerrilla warfare: ambushes and “hit and run” aacks. The Brish found it hard to defeat them.

The Brish knew, too, that the Boer fighters could move around the country without worrying about supplies because they would find food and shelter at any Boer farmhouse, even if they were total strangers.

Enter Lords Roberts’ and Kitchener’s “scorched earth” policy: Brish soldiers were ordered to burn Boers’ crops, kill or take their livestock and burn down their farmhouses - all to cut off the Boer fighters’ means of surviving.

Boer women, children and farm workers were le with nothing.

The Brish rounded them up and put them in concentraon camps, blacks and whites separate. They lived in appalling condions, mostly in tents, filthy and half starved. Disease was rife: typhoid, diphtheria, measles, and malnutrion. Over 27,000 Boers died in those camps: 80% were children. The Brish did not keep records of how many black people died, but esmates are between 14,000 and 18,000.

It saddens me to think of the gun box being part of that cruel war Then I had a lile think. My gun box was designed to carry weapons of war, but it did so for just a few years.

Then it was reused for over 120 years for happy purposes in happy houses.

I like to think that far outweighs its service in war
