Acting Up to Present “Honk!” The Musical Tale of the Ugly Duckling June 8-10, 2012 Acting Up, the young performers community theater based in Mason, will present Honk! June 8, 9 and 10, 2012, at the Mason Middle School Theater. With the perfect blend of humor and heart, Honk! is a family show stressing that it's okay to be different, and you will still be loved ,"warts and all." In the London season that featured the appearance of THE LION KING, Honk! became a stand-out by winning the 2000 Olivier Award (the British equivalent of the Tony® Award) for Best New Musical. Honk! is the story of Ugly the “duckling”, whose odd, gawky looks instantly incite prejudice from his family and neighbors. Separated from the farm and pursued by a hungry Cat, Ugly must find his way home. Along his journey he discovers his true beauty and glorious destiny as well as love and acceptance in all its forms. Witty and hilarious, but also deeply moving, Honk! will treat you to laughter and tears with its charm, humor and message of tolerance. Acting Up’s production of Honk! is brought to you in part by a grant from ArtsWave and is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International. In its past five seasons, Acting Up has been nominated for 204 Orchid awards, winning 101 of these from the Ohio Association of Community Theaters. Acting Up strives to give youngsters an educational experience in the theater through performing and backstage knowledge in designing costumes and lighting, choreography, and assisting in stage managing and other stage crew positions. Honk! is directed by Dan Docherty and produced by Laura Peebles. Assistant director is Brent Peebles. Musical director is Shere Contant, and Cindy Wilmes and Amy Docherty are the choreographers. Drew Kovacs stars as Ugly, the young “duckling” trying to find his place in the barnyard. His mother, Ida, is played by Abby Docherty, and father, Drake, will be played by Brandon Huber. The show will also feature a cast of approximately 80 talented young performers, ranging in age from 6 to 18 hailing from throughout the Cincinnati area. There will be four showings of Honk! at the Mason Middle School Theater, 6370 Mason Montgomery Road, Mason, OH 45040.
