Why Act for Change Act for Change Training is a development programme for those who wish to work with vulnerable young people often with complex trauma. Trauma Systemic Development The (TSD) Training Programme brings together trauma, developmental and systemic awareness in an innovative, integrative programme. Designed as an interactive, intensive programme, it links training days with action learning for social workers and counsellors working with young people vulnerable to violence. Act for Change Training is offered to you with the support of National Lottery and Resonance, to invest in the next generation of Act for Change Practitioners. What the Programme will look like for you: 10 Training Days 28 weekly supervision sessions 100 hours of supervised counselling Monthly meetings of our Community of Practice The intensive programme requires participants to attend 10 training days over 12 months, deliver 100 sessions with young people and take part in weekly supervision.


WHAT WILL I LEARN? We focus on developing your specialist knowhow, alongside a wide range of interventions, tools and a systemic framework for thinking about violence. You will engage with expert trainers in areas such as trauma-informed practice, systemic safeguarding and the structural issues affecting mental health.

Child & Adolescent Development


A CLOSER LOOK Our trainings are designed to facilitate all learning styles. We use a range of approaches: training days are a mixture of facilitator-led, didactic teaching , experiential participation and peer-led practice. The course will take place on a Friday and Saturday over the course of a year. Trauma –Awareness 2 Days Friday and Saturday 23-24 October 2020 We will consider the latest developments on trauma and related neuro-biology. Participants will practice identifying trauma and setting up initial objectives of working with trauma. Family Systems - 2 Days Friday and Saturday 20-21 November 2020 We will explore the impact of trauma on family systems. Participants will consider intervention points across the family system. Child/Adolescent Development - 2 Days Friday and Saturday 15-16 January 2021• We will look at the main developmental models.• Participants will have the opportunity to discuss particular cases and consider how to restore the developmental task of the moment. Creative Techniques for Therapy - 2 Days Friday 5-6 February 2021• We will provide a wide overview of creative techniques used in trauma work.• Participants will have the opportunity to visit various projects around London using different techniques and to consider how and when they might use them. Child/Family Assessment - 1 Day Friday 5th March 2021 We will provide the evidential and therapeutic need for assessment and present various tools available for assessment.• Participants will have the opportunity to discuss assessment tools and how AFC assessment determines support planning. Evidence Based Approaches - 1 Day Friday 16 April 2021• We will look at diverse methodologies of building an evidence base and discuss the theoretical underpinnings of TSD.• Participants will be provided with a practical grounding in how to use our CRM to help build the evidence base of TSD as they monitor and evaluate their own work using our system.


Our Community Development Trainings enable facilitators and community workers in their efforts to support communal cohesion, resilience and transformation. This , in turn, helps to achieve better outcomes for young people, their families and the wider community.

Systemic Safeguarding • Introduction to systemic safeguarding Participants will have the opportunity of exploring safeguarding as an aspect of systemic awareness as well as a procedural practice. • What support is needed to enable the observer/ witness to take on a protector role? • Participants will gain an understanding of the legal framework of safeguarding, the systemic landscape and the psychological risks and resistances to picking up the protective role. • Gain greater systemic awareness and understanding of how to introduce protective factors and actions to prevent abuse.

• Systemic Safeguarding - the Series

Over 9 half-days participants will have the opportunity to present their casework examples through which we will explore systemic safeguarding, each time from a different perspective.


Roles, Rank and Relationship • This course is designed for recently graduated social workers, counsellors and psychotherapists and police officers. • It is an experiential two days in which participants will explore their own rank and power in relation to the roles they play. Participants will play with different ways of going beyond rank and designated roles to create relational spaces in their professional interactions.


Professionals here also benefit from weekly team meetings to discuss case studies, Monthly CPD meetings and a large network of specialists to seek advice from and refer to.
