PARKING I’m honored to chair this year’s event, which will be held on Saturday, Nov. 6, at St. Louis Union Station. Our theme – A Breakthrough Experience – spotlights the American Cancer Society’s efforts to enhance health equity and advance innovative research being conducted right here in St. Louis. It also highlights the distinctive and artful experience we have planned for our guests. This will be our sixth annual gala, and together, we’ve made a tremendous impact, raising more than $6.2 million since 2016. This year also marks the 10th anniversary of our chapter. I’m so proud to be a member of this dedicated group and collaborate with all of you in our efforts to fight cancer. Having faced my own battle with cancer, I know how important it is to give others hope and to help our families, colleagues and communities not just survive, but thrive. We have a lot to celebrate this year, and I hope you’ll join me in working to make this our most successful gala to date. Thank you for your partnership and commitment to the American Cancer Society, our St. Louis Chapter and this year’s gala. I look forward to seeing you at the celebration!

See you on November 6th.

Today’s Research Breakthroughs are Tomorrow’s Treatments FUND A NEED RESEARCH IN MISSOURI This year, the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Research program celebrates 75 years of commitment to progress in the fight against cancer. During this time, we’ve played a role in almost every major cancer research breakthrough in the last century and funded the research of 49 investigators who went on to win the Nobel Prize. Since 1946, the American Cancer Society has invested over $5 billion in research nationally, including $80 million in research projects throughout the State of Missouri. Our innovative cancer research programs span across a wide range of disciplines to meet critically important needs. The research we conduct and fund transforms the way we treat and prevent cancer – and through this work we save lives every day. Research informs prevention, patient support, advocacy and health equity efforts. The investigations we conduct and fund happen through several different channels and extend beyond our agency into over 200 institutions nationwide. In all facets of our work, we strive to expand our efforts to understand and overcome health disparities – in the laboratory, through population and surveillance studies, and within the communities we serve. Right now, the American Cancer Society is funding nearly 700 high impact and innovative extramural research grants totaling over $388 million looking at cancer from bench to bedside. This includes $8.6 million in 15 grants right here in the state of Missouri. These grants improve our knowledge of nearly every aspect of cancer – from what causes it to how we can end it. There are currently 170 more promising extramural research projects that are on hold due to a lack of funds. These projects were ranked outstanding – the highest possible score – by our twolevel peer review process. By supporting Champions of Hope, you are helping the American Cancer Society ensure vital research continues. 100% of your gift will fund cutting-edge lifesaving cancer research conducted right here in Missouri.

A N OT E A B O U T H O W W E A R E H A N D L I N G CO V I D F O R Y O U R S A F E T Y & T H E S A F E T Y O F OT H E R S :

We are so grateful for your support at our 2021 Champions of Hope Gala. The health and safety of our immune compromised supporters, volunteers, staff and community at-large are of the utmost importance. Therefore, we will require all individuals attending this year’s Champions of Hope be fully vaccinated with either one dose of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine or two-doses of the Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine requirement or you must provide a negative COVID-19 test within 72-hours of the event. Certainly, we are erring on the side of caution and proceeding deliberately and carefully. However, as a public health organization that serves the immune-compromised, our responsibility is greater to protect the health, safety, and well-being of those that trust us. It is for this reason that we also require all employees of the American Cancer Society to be fully vaccinated.

Thank you.
