SUMMER

Two of 52 new Edina Public Schools teachers are 2003 alumni BY KATIE MINTZ • SUN NEWSPAPERS Two Edina classmates are returning to the district this year in new roles. Katy Fiedler and Molly Szarzynski, 2003 Edina High School graduates, are members of the Countryside Elementary School staff. Fiedler will teach second grade and Szarzynski will teach Continuous Progress grades three and four when school begins Tuesday, Sept. 6. On campus for orientation with the district’s 50 other new teachers last month, both said they were happy to be back, though it’s taken some getting used to. “It’s kind of different to call my former teachers by their first name rather than their last name,” Szarzynski said. While they’re now her peers, she said she hopes to continue learning from their knowledge and experience. Fiedler said she when she

An improved entrance will greet Kuhlman Stadium visitors this fall as part of a push to revamp a nearby athletic field. The Edina Youth Sports Association recently installed a paver plaza at the stadium in an effort to raise the approximately $1.6 million needed to turf the upper fields adjacent to Kuhlman. Paige Rickert, a longtime board member of the Edina Football Association, which is leading the effort, said the associations are partnering with Edina Public Schools to make the project on district property

Regional Partnerships for Minnesota State University, Mankato, said the Twin Cities location is key to serving students in today’s economy. “People need convenience, they need flexibility, and they can’t drive to Mankato or Winona,” he said. “You’ve got to bring it to the learner and that’s what we’re trying to do.” MSU-Mankato in Edina offers several master’s degree programs, bachelor degree completion, licensure and certificate programs. About 75 percent of the 2,590 students enrolled in classes there this fall, spring and summer are in graduate programs. In the new job climate, Ann Goebel, director of Twin Cities partnerships, said the master’s degree is the new bachelor’s degree, and students are responding. “That’s the student we’re finding needs us the most right now,” Goebel said. The leading programs in Edina are the master of business administration and master of public administration. MSUMankato also offers master’s degrees in education, nursing, engineering and more. Beginning this fall, it is offering its first doctorate of educational leadership to a full class. Next fall the campus will add a doctorate of nursing practice. “Our other mission is undergraduate degree completion,” Goebel said. Students can finish their last two years of a bachelor’s degree after attending community college or even a couple classes if they left a four-year college a few credits shy of graduating. MSU-Mankato also works in partnership with other Minnesota State Colleges and Universities schools on degree completion. For the last several years, MSU-Mankato faculty has taught upper level courses on the Normandale Community College campus in Bloomington and at Mesabi Range Community and Technical College in

Virginia, Minn. Becky Copper-Glenz, dean for the College of Extended Learning for MSUMankato, said it’s a part of making learning convenient. “These are non-traditional students, so a lot of times they’re working adults. They have families. They have full-time jobs,” Copper-Glenz said. In Edina, many courses are a blend of online and classroom learning. Two rooms feature real-time video conferencing connecting students with classes offered only in Mankato. MSU-Mankato also has about 30 programs available online only. The busiest hours in Edina are 3-10 p.m. With proximity to a vibrant business corridor in Edina and the entire metro, forming strategic partnerships is also a focus, said Hoffman. The Edina location can work with companies to create noncredit programs that address specific needs, like leadership training, for its employees. “It’s a great location,” Hoffman said “It avails us to a lot of business, industry, government and nonprofit requests of enhancement of skills, development of new skills and completion of degrees.” Goebel said MSU-Mankato in Edina recently finishing working with Dakota County Technical College in Rosemount to train employees of Apple Valley-based Uponor through a Minnesota Job Skills Grant. Goebel, who previously worked as part of Mankato’s manufacturing engineering faculty, instructed the employees in lean manufacturing, a practice that helps identify and reduce waste that doesn’t add value to the final product. She said more partnerships are expected as the school grows. “As we hear the needs from business and industry we can create professional development opportunities to meet lifelong learning needs,” Copper-Glenz said.

EDUCATION NOTES Edina teacher selected for fellowship program An Edina teacher was among five middle and high school educators recently chosen to participate in the University of St. Thomas School of Education’s inaugural teaching fellowship program. Tim Ronhovde, who teaches seventh grade science at Valley View Middle School, was selected from 105 applicants from 20 school districts and 21 private

schools in the Twin Cities. The program seeks to bring together a group of accomplished educators and help them further develop their teaching, mentoring, critical-thinking and technology skills. Each participant in the yearlong program will receive a stipend, iPad and graduate-level academic credits. Ronhovde is also staff-development coordinator at Valley View and serves on the Building Leadership Team, the Site Council and coaches the eighth-grade Knowledge Master’s Team.

Seniors: Hold on to house title Many people want to add their children to the title to their home or other real estate or transfer the title to their children outright. They think this will make things simpler in the present or at their death. However, many problems can arise: — After the time the deed is signed, you no longer own your home alone. Instead, your children own it with you. — Each owner has a right to sell or transfer their share of the property and could transfer it to someone you don’t want to own it. — If you decide to sell the property or refinance it to fund repairs or improvements, all owners and their spouses will have to sign the deed or mortgage. This is not because you are giving the spouses any actual

CATHERINE R. THATCHER Thatcher Law Firm

interest in the property, but because Minnesota law protects real estate rights of spouses. — Creditors with a judgment against a child-owner will have a lien against the house, which must be paid if the house is sold. — If you are giving an interest in your home to your children, and not selling it for fair market value, you will not be eligible for Medical Assistance for 5 years after the transfer. — There are gift tax consequences if you give property worth more than the annual exclusion amount to one person

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Supports Berger for school board To the editor: As a second-generation Edina resident, I wanted to write in support of Jason Berger for the Edina School Board. It has been my privilege to get to know Jason, his wife Angie, and his children Ava, Sunni and Jackson. Over the past 12 years, I have worked with Jason on various projects. While his vision and goals were uppermost in mind, he never lost sight of the details, and is a very capable leader. I have worked with Jason organizing various charitable events around Edina and southwest Minneapolis. These were

Red Cross blood drives, fundraising events for the Edina Public Schools’ Glucose Monitor Program, University of Minnesota Cancer Hospital, Rite Care Clinics and the Shriners Hospital, VEAP food shelves among others. Jason has the ability to work well with people from a wide range of interests. When he undertakes a project, he does not quit until it is completed. I was pleased to learn he was running for the school board. He will be a good addition to a school board that has guided Edina to the top ranking it now enjoys. I’m confident he will work diligently to maintain and improve the quality of the Edina Public School system. Daniel Akins Edina

in any one year ($13,000 in 2011). No gift tax will be due at that time, but you must file a gift tax return. — Your children will not be eligible for the income tax exclusion for a primary residence when they sell the house if they do not live there and will have to pay capital gains tax on the gain. — If the house is gifted to your children, they will get a carryover tax basis instead of a stepped-up basis as would have been the case had you died owning the property. If the property has increased in value while you have owned it, this could result in a large taxable gain when your children sell the property. — If your child gets a divorce, the house may be considered in making the property settlement,

and the house might possibly be awarded to the child’s spouse. To avoid these problems, you may want to transfer the property to your children at your death, rather than during your lifetime. There are a few methods to do so, including executing a will that will transfer the title at your death; putting the property into a revocable trust and your trustee will transfer the title after your death; or by using a transfer on death deed which does not take effect until your death. Always back-to-school time in Hennepin County Libraries provide lifelong, year-round learning opportunities BY CARLA KNUTSON BIERMAIER HENNEPIN COUNTY LIBRARY COMMUNICATIONS & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Seeing the bins full of backto-school supplies at local stores and kids rummaging through them remind many adults, including me, of late summer in our grade school years. Most of us were excited about the upcoming school year, delighted to have colorful, new

Well, it’s back-to-school time virtually every day of the year at local libraries. Without fail, every day patrons of all ages go to the library to learn new things. Many are visibly eager to learn. There are various reasons why students miss school frequently, Freeman said. Barriers can include transportation

problems or a lack of good clothes. Sometimes children are asked to babysit their younger siblings while their parents are at work. One of the goals of be@school is to refer families to social service agencies that can help alleviate these types of problems. Freeman said 43 percent of elementary students with six to 12 unexcused absences had no more after 90 days in the program. In a survey, 82 percent of staff members whose schools participated believed be@school was effective in cutting truancy and unexcused absences. State law requires students to be in school until they are 18 – they can be officially withdrawn with parent consent if they are 16 or older. Be@school is offered to every school in Hennepin County – most schools that participate have a staff member whose duty is to be in charge of the program at the site. Thomas said it was a more innovative approach to addressing a lack of school attendance. “It’s clarifying the expectations for families.”

Olson Bros. reopens under Walgreens name Jerry’s Do-It-Best Hardware site to be remodeled for Walgreens pharmacy BY KATIE MINTZ • SUN NEWSPAPERS An independent Edina drug store in business for more than 50 years has gone

the way of Walgreens. Josh Lemm and business partner Chris Beckmann no longer own Olson Brothers Pharmacy, Lemm said when reached by phone Tuesday, Aug. 23. Walgreens acquired the business this summer as part of an overhaul of the Jerry’s Enterprises complex on Vernon Avenue. Lemm said his last week in the space leased from Jerry’s, 5121 Vernon Ave., was the first week of August. It has since

and Roy Olson in 1955, according to local historian Joe Sullivan. They sold the pharmacy when they retired in 1994. The second owners sold the business to Lemm and Beckmann in 2004. Lemm said he would not have additional comments. He and Beckmann continue to own Hopkins Center Drug and Chanhassen Center Drug. As part of the deal, a developer for Walgreens also purchased the Jerry’s Do-it-Best Hardware property next door, 5033 Vernon Ave., from Jerry’s Enterprises for $6.16 million. Howard Bergerud, a principle with Semper Development Ltd., the Walgreens developer, said he expects renovation of the hardware store to begin in April. It will likely reopen as Walgreens about this time next year, he said. The hardware store will then move next-door, replacing the former Olson Brothers Pharmacy space in the Jerry’s Foods building, which is also receiving a new façade. Calls to Jerry’s Enterprises President Robert Shadduck and Darcy Winter, a commercial real estate consultant representing Jerry’s, were not returned at press time. In a letter to the Edina City Council in January, Shadduck said selling the site to Semper would allow Jerry’s to revitalize its existing properties.

Army colonel with Edina ties writes 9/11 book Former Edina resident and retired U.S. Army Col. Will G. Merrill Jr. recently released “Ordinary People: Extraordinary Heroes,” to commemorate the bravery of 9/11 first responders. The book aims to help readers witness the events of Sept. 11, 2001, through the eyes of the first responders. Merrill tells the story of those who barely escaped, some buried alive and others trapped for hours under building debris. He conducted more than 60 interviews with individuals involved with the rescue efforts at the World Trade Center, including then-Mayor Rudy Giuliani, U.S. Congressman Peter T. King, who wrote the introduction, Sal Cassano, the fire commissioner of New York City. Merrill is a 1958 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and served for 31 years in the U.S. Army, spending 11 years overseas in Germany, Vietnam, Korea and Greece. He lived in Edina for 18 years while commanding the Army Recruiting District and as an advisor to the Minnesota Army National Guard. Pavers FROM PAGE 1 happen. “There are 10,000 athletes that make up the youth associations,” Rickert said. “Our fields and facilities need help. This allows us to come together and help raise money ... to improve our athletic facilities.” Community members can pay to have their name engraved on one of the approximately 4,000 cement blocks placed at the Kuhlman entrance.

Proceeds will go toward the construction of two turf fields. Currently, the heavily used upper field is grass and in dire need of replacement. “It’s got a lot of ruts and is worn. It would be in much safer condition than it is in today,” said Rickert, who estimates it receives 1,600 hours of use each year. “Even right now it’s only been a couple weeks of football practice and it’s already become a dustbowl,” Edina High School Athletic Director John Soma said. A July 2010 report from the district Activities Facility Task Force listed the

In the Community, With the Community, For the Community

project as the top priority for improvements. Soma said it would have a broad impact. About 1,200 high school soccer, lacrosse, football and track team members use the space, as well as youth teams and other leagues. Soma said the plan involves rotating the existing field now running east-towest to north-to-south, which, along with other currently unused acreage, would allow the addition of an entire second field. He said it is necessary for Edina as a fully developed community to maximize space. “We just know that in order to get it done we’d have to work together,” he

said. “The school district couldn’t do it alone.” The district entered a partnership with the Edina Youth Sports Association in June allowing it to use school property for the paver plaza. All of the money raised will be held in an Edina Community Foundation fund for district facility enhancements. According to the agreement, which runs through June 2015, 100 percent of project costs must be raised before construction on the turf fields begins. Supt. Ric Dressen said the partnership is new for the district. While it has shared resources and funding with the city in the past, it has never had a similar agreement with an outside agency or nonprofit. “It’s relatively a new venture but I think it’s a way we can create a win-win situation where it’s a win for the district and a win for the community,” Dressen said, noting at this time the district does not have any funding designated for the project. Rickert said he hopes this is the first of many projects the youth associations can help the school district with. Through an initial $11,500 gift from an unnamed resident to install the plaza, the effort is already benefiting the district, he said. PAVERS: TO NEXT PAGE

Right Way Painting Solutions After one of the most brutal winters we have encountered in the past 30 years, we have all found things that need repair or replacement on our homes. Many of us have needed to put off work being done to our homes do to economic hard times. Many of us also put off projects to save money in case things got worse. Our home values have gone down which makes it hard to even think about selling our homes. The reality is that we have to keep our property in good shape to maintain our values. Painting the exterior of our homes is by far the best value to preserving our wood surfaces and windows. We can also dramatically change the appearance of the inside of our homes by updating colors. Painting woodwork is a very affordable option compared to replacing old trim around our homes. In many older homes our windows are still good, but the old stain and varnish are not holding up any more. You can save thousands of dollars by painting these windows verses replacing windows. Updating your

basement family room can also be as easy as painting the paneling. I’m Paul Moore from Rightway Painting Solutions. I’ve been in the painting business for over 20 years. Being a former Shop Teacher, I have a good background in finishing and wood replacement. We do both residential and commercial painting. We do work for several Town Home Associations, Nursing Homes and Residential Properties. We give our customers great value by being able to not just paint. We replace or repair wood, repair and reglaze older windows and reside areas that need replacement. We also repair decks and re stain decks. On the inside we repair walls, remove wallpaper, enamel wood work and paint paneling. We offer a 2 year labor warrantee on our labor, provide references and we would be happy to give you a free estimate. For all of your painting needs give us a call at 612-8392239.

The Minneapolis resident comes to the district with one year of experience

teaching first grade in Waconia. Fiedler said she’s always enjoyed working with young kids and in high school helped with summer programs at the Edina Community Center. “I love the wonder they bring to the classroom and the enthusiasm. Edythe L. Pizzala Edythe L. Pizzala, died at Hillcrest of Wayzata, Wayzata, Minn. on August 22, 2011 – four years after the death of her beloved and handsome husband of 65 years, George E. Pizzala. A resident of Bloomington, Minn. for more than 53 years, Edythe was born August 12, 1923 in Fresno, Calif. to George and Anna Eurich. Edythe fondly remembered her early years growing up on an orchard farm with her 22 siblings and half-siblings. She graduated Roosevelt High School, Fresno, Calif. in 1940. Edythe had a beautiful singing voice and, along with her sisters, performed live and on the radio on many occasions. Edythe met her husband George in 1942 and it was love at first sight. They married 3 days later in Reno, Nevada. Thereafter, Edythe lived the life of an Army wife, following George to many duty stations around the world, including Japan and Europe. While stationed in Germany, Edythe organized the first Boy Scout Troop there for American military families, as well as for her own two young sons at the time, Dennis and Keith. Edythe and George settled in Bloomington, Minn. in the late 50s. In 1964, Edythe joined the Hennepin County Welfare Dept. as a Home Management Counselor. In this capacity, she taught home management skills – such as budgeting, child care, home maintenance and nutrition – to low income mothers. Edythe thrived in this role for 20 years and was recognized by the then State of Minnesota Governor for her succcessful pilot programs dealing with young unwed mothers. After retiring from the Welfare Dept. in 1985, Edythe started her own business called PIZZAZ, a consulting company that taught seniors transitional skills needed for successful retirement. Edythe had a unique flair and artistic eye, which were expressed in many creative outlets throughout her life. She became a talented watercolor and oil painter. She designed beautiful rooms, gardens and floral arrangements. In her 70s, she started Edie's Interior & Floral Design, selling her paintings and elaborate silk flower arrangements and wreaths to local galleries and businesses. She later taught painting classes for friends and neighbors. Edythe was very outgoing and made lifelong friendships with people of all ages with whom she shared her love of gardening, cooking, antiques, music, and singing. An adventurous spirit, she was always eager to learn new hobbies and skills, whether it be tai chi, calligraphy, or making flavored olive oils and vinegars. Edythe is survived by her son, Keith (Jody), daughter, Carolynn Sherby (Jim); grandchildren, Tina Floersch, Lisa Mogler, Nicolas Pizzala, and Brielle Pizzala; and great-grand- children, Sarina, Ashley, Antonio, Dominic and Adrianna. Another son, Dennis, preceded her in death in 1993. Private interment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. A memorial gathering will be held at Washburn- McReavy Dawn Valley, 9940 Bush Lake Rd., Bloomington, MN, Thursday, Sept. 8, 4-6 PM. Memorials to www.alzheimers.org. Football openers set Thursday, Sept. 1, is opening night for all five Lake Conference football teams. Each of the games will kick off at 7 p.m. Defending state Class 5A champion Wayzata will travel to Prior Lake. Senior Nick Martin leads an all-star Trojan backfield that also features Antonio Ford, Erik Roti and Mitch Underhill. Eden Prairie, led by All-State running back candidate Andrew Larson, has a home game against Champlin Park. Edina, led by Division I prospects Nick Rallis and Kevin Carroll, opens at Andover. Minnetonka travels to Fridley to play TotinoGrace. Scott Benedict is the Skippers’ returning starter at quarterback. Safety Charles Webb leads the defense. Hopkins, led by All-State wide receiver Andre McDonald, is at home for a game against Apple Valley.

Cross country rivals Wayzata, which is ranked second in the state Class AA boys cross country poll, will get a shot at No. 1-ranked Stillwater at the Marshfield Invitational at Marshfield, Wis. this weekend. The race will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, at Crow Creek Park.

Soccer doubleheader The girls and boys soccer teams from Bloomington Jefferson and Edina will play a doubleheader Thursday, Sept. 1, at Edina’s Braemar Park. The girls game starts at 5 p.m. The boys match will follow at 7.

EP volleyball tourney The Eden Prairie Invitational girls volleyball tournament will be 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, at Eden Prairie High School. Schools entering the tourney are Alexandria, Chanhassen, Cretin-Derham Hall, Hill-Murray, Mayer Lutheran, Minnetonka, Mounds View, North St. Paul, Perham, Minneapolis Southwest, Waconia and Eden Prairie. – COMPILED BY JOHN SHERMAN

Hornets set for opener BY JOHN SHERMAN • SUN NEWSPAPERS If a scout had seen Edina in scrimmages Aug. 27 at Kuhlman Field, it would have been difficult to predict who’ll start at quarterback for the Hornets this week against Andover. Edina head coach Reed Boltmann has a pretty good idea who will start in the season opener at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, at Andover, but he wasn’t about to show his hand. “We used four quarterbacks in the scrimmages,” said Boltmann. “Mark Handberg probably got the most reps. We might have a couple of guys rotate in the first game. A lot of coaches don’t like their quarterbacks playing other positions, but we have some versatile athletes among our quarterbacks.” One of them, senior tri-captain Nick Rallis, has taken versatility to a new level. “In addition to quarterback, Nick can play running back, wide receiver, tight end, defensive end, linebacker, safety and corner,” said Boltmann. “This is Nick’s second year as captain and he’s a 24/7 football guy.” The other EHS captains are seniors Brian Franz and Jake Remes. “Our captains have done a fantastic job

of managing the team and managing egos,” said Boltmann. “Brian is a soft-spoken leader. He is a second-year starter at center. Jake is a starting wide receiver who will also rotate into the defensive backfield.” What does Boltmann expect from Andover Thursday night? “First of all, they’re a good team,” he said. “They finished 10-1 last season and lost to Blaine in the section finals. It’s a bigger school with good numbers, and they would love to beat a Lake Conference team.” Andover spreads the field on offense, similar to the style that Hopkins plays in the Lake Conference. “They run a spread with a pistol package,” said Boltmann. “They’ll show some four-wide sets and ghost backfields. “Defensively, Andover runs a 3-4 with cover-twos,” Boltmann added. “They have an experienced defensive line.” Edina has a strong senior orientation this year, and Boltmann said that could give the Hornets an edge. “I’ve told our seniors it’s their time,” said Boltmann. “If we can stay healthy and if we can execute, I feel we have a chance in every game.”

Heavy graduation losses at Eden Prairie and Wayzata could open the door for the Edina High girls soccer team to take control of the Lake Conference race. Hornet head coach Simon Whitehead has a good returning group that includes two senior defenders with Division I offers, Sydney Born and Elena Tsakakis. Born is a captain along with midfielder Mary Stafford and forward Brittany Bingham. Other returning regulars are junior forward Vivian Engen, sophomore forward Lara Boman, junior midfielder Hailey Merrill and senior midfielder Morgan Faulkner. “With Bingham, Boman and Engen, we have three good forwards,” said Whitehead, who has had seven state tournament qualifiers in his first 12 years as Edina’s head coach. “I think it will be an exciting year. We come into it a little bit under the radar.” Edina had a good year in 2010 with a 13-6-2 record, but finished behind state champion Eden Prairie and state runner-up Wayzata in the Lake Conference standings. “We’re pretty solid this year,” said Whitehead. “We have positive leaders and some good offensive weapons.” Whitehead said the goalie’s position is in good hands with senior Allie Davis as No. 1. The Hornets opened the season with a 5-0 victory over Elk River Aug. 25. Bingham scored two goals for Edina, one on a direct free kick. Boman, Engen and Merrill also netted goals. Edina beat Armstrong 2-1 Aug. 27 with goals from Merrill and Bingham. Tri-captains Bingham, Born and Stafford talked about the win after the match. Bingham’s goal came on a 35-meter, left-footed blast. “The adrenaline kicked in,” she said. “My left foot is improving, and I’m using it more often.” “We play aggressive defense, and we play hard the whole game,” said Born.

End of Park and Rec Softball means summer is winding down in Edina Summer in Edina usually starts winding down during the park and rec softball playoffs. The Love Handles lost a 33game winning streak this summer, but rebounded to win their sixth consecutive men’s 35 & Over title. They defeated the Mild Boys 18-8 in the title game at VanValkenburg Park. In an exciting Monday Night Doubleheader League championship game, Heath Johnson’s 380-foot homer helped Old Chicago close out the Web Gems 20-17. Jim Williams of the Love Handles digs for home.

Can Hornet football team challenge Lake Conference elite? Every year at this time, it seems like we’re asking the same question. Can the Edina High football team challenge the Lake Conference elite? Lake champ Wayzata, also the defending state Class 5A champion, is loaded with good backs. In addition to returnees Mitch Underhill and Erik Roti, the Trojans now have Coon Rapids transfer Antonio Ford, who might have been the best tailback in the Northwest Suburban Conference last season. Another Lake power, Eden Prairie, has one of the state’s premier halfbacks, Andrew Larson, along with a few 300pound bodyguards to clear holes for him. Hopkins wide receiver Andre McDonald is on speed dial for the new Ohio State coach. And he’s not the only blue-chip player for the Royals, who have Division I prospect Tavaughn Blair in the secondary. And don’t forget about Minnetonka. Charles Webb is a Division I prospect at safety and Scott Benedict returns at

quarterback. “Overall, this is the fastest team I’ve had at Minnetonka,” coach Dave Nelson said earlier this week. So where does Edina fit in? Hornet head coach Reed Boltmann said there are two keys to staying in contention. • The Hornets have to stay healthy. • The Hornets have to execute. It sounds simple enough. Edina’s offensive linemen spent long hours in the weightroom during the offseason. Veteran center Brian Franz is one of the top linemen in the Lake Conference and provides excellent leadership for the group. The quarterback situation is scram-

bled going into the Thursday, Sept. 1, opener at Andover, but whoever gets the nod has good targets in Nick Boone, Jake Remes, Joe Wood and Graham Woodward. Marley Allison and C.J. Johnson are strong players in the defensive secondary. Nick Rallis, who will sign with the University of Minnesota in November, returns as Edina’s defensive points leader. He is one of the best all-around players in the Lake Conference, Boltmann said. Edina finished 4-5 overall last year and has a shot at bettering that mark this year. As Boltmann said, it depends on injuries and execution.

Hornets win ‘the Cup’ Edina High’s girls tennis team recently won the championship at the Dominican Cup tourney in Madison, Wis. “It was a good tournament for us, even though it was kind of a whirlwind

this early in the season,” said Edina head coach Steve Paulsen. “Three of the top teams in Minnesota – Minnetonka, Mounds View and Rochester Mayo – were also there, so we got a good barometer on where we stand.” Hornet girls won flight championships in four of the seven lineup positions. Senior Meghana Vasireddy won the title at No. 2 singles and ninth-grader Kelly Reger was the champ at No. 4 singles. The Hornets won No. 1 doubles honors with juniors Morgan Marinovich and Meghan Herring. They also took the No. 2 doubles title with ninth-grader Mackenzie Marinovich and senior Julia Povilaitis. Edina, 4-0 in team matches thus far, has a powerful lineup led by Caroline Ward and Vasireddy at No. 1 and 2 singles. “Caroline has taken the upper hand,” said Paulsen. “But those two are definitely our top players.”

Dylan Rusk named Junior PGA Player of the Year Edina golfer sets sights on NCAA Division I BY JOHN SHERMAN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Dylan Rusk of Edina is a golfer on a mission, and that mission is to play NCAA Division I golf. He recently enhanced his chances by earning the Minnesota Junior PGA Player of the Year award. “I knew I was in contention for it,” said Rusk. “I had to go up and place in the top three in the last match the summer series at Cragun’s [in the Brainerd Lakes area].” Rusk took first place at Cragun’s with 18-hole rounds of 71 and 75. That performance solidified his status as player of the year. “My round the first day was solid,” he said. “I had a few rough breaks the second day.” Rusk said his stroke average for the summer was about 73. His best round was a 69 at Chaska Town Course. In addition to making a name for himself on the Minnesota Junior PGA circuit, Rusk has been a three-year let-

terman for the Edina High golf team. He enters his senior year this fall. “My high school coach, Phil Finanger, has guided me through the mental aspects of the game and given me tips on how to cut strokes,” said Rusk. The Edina golfer also has a personal swing coach, Ernie Rose. “We have been working on my short game,” said Rusk. “Ernie has helped me with some minor, but key, swing Nameline changes.” As a distant goal, Rusk said he would like to play on the PGA Tour. His immediate goal is to play in a good Division I golf program. “I started playing golf seriously when I was 9 years old,” he said. “I had some friends that played and my family lives only a couple of blocks from Edina Country Club. Because I played

a lot, I started playing well pretty quick.” What does Rusk like most about the game? “The immediate feedback,” he said. “If you do something right, you’ll know it right away.” Rusk, who is on the A honor roll, has never had a hole in one, but he has had several eagles. Since there is no winter golf in Minnesota, Rusk stays in shape by playing hockey. He was on the Edina High JV team as a sophomore and played on the Junior Gold traveling team last season. Rusk’s parents, father Jamie and mother Shannon, are often in the stands at his hockey games and in the gallery at his golf events. The Edina senior said one of his best days this summer was the day Edina Country Club reopened in early July. The course had been going through an extensive makeover. “I couldn’t be happier,” said Rusk. “The changes are great. I’d say the course is trickier now, but the greens are firm and the ball has been rolling well.”

Edina boys start 2-0 in soccer Jenson has experienced nucleus for 2011 BY JOHN SHERMAN • SUN NEWSPAPERS After going 15-2-2 last fall, the Edina High boys soccer team is off to a 2-0 start this season. Coach Dave Jenson’s Hornets downed Cretin-Derham Hall 3-1 in the season opener Aug. 25 and added a 4-0 win over Holy Family Catholic Aug. 27. The fast start doesn’t surprise Jenson, the Hornets’ head coach since 1986. “We have four fourth-year varsity players, and when you have that type of experience, it’s easier to be successful,” said Jenson. The four senior leaders are midfielders Stephen Johnson and Evan Panken, forward Jens Undlin and defender John Lagorio. Johnson, Panken and Undlin were AllLake Conference selections last season and Panken earned All-State honorable mention from the state soccer coaches’ association. In addition to having those strong field players, Edina has an experienced goalkeeper in senior Nathan Rousey. Junior

Alex Pastor and freshman Tanner Morrison back him up. “We have 14 seniors this year,” said Jenson. “That’s a lot of seniors. But we feel like they can all contribute something.” Additional seniors on the roster are defenders Joe Budenske, Ryan Gaertner and Austin Wothe, midfielders Elias DeVoe, Sawyer Kuck and Michael Murney and forwards Max Feinberg, Jackson Kessel and Michael Woolsey. Juniors Alex Van Gorp and Arin Arpinar are returning starters. Other juniors seeking playing time are Jack Kromer and Fahad Maow. Jenson is also looking at sophomores Trip Adams, Sam Hechter, David Smith and Nick Stastny and freshman Brett Weicht. Edina finished second to Wayzata in the Lake Conference last season. Going into the 2011 Lake season, Wayzata is one of the favorites along with Edina. Eden Prairie is always a solid team, Minnetonka is improved and Hopkins received a boost when transfer student Rolando Barclay joined the team for fall practice. Next for the Hornets is a 7 p.m. match with Jefferson Thursday, Sept. 1, at Braemar Park.
