Aún no está dicha la última palabra. Se requiere no solo de los resultados de los estudios clínicos mencionados, conformados por un gran número de pacientes, sino también conocer más sobre la lesión de almacenamiento. Hess6 tiene dudas con relación a la posibilidad de obtener resultados ciertos aún con este tipo de estudios grandes y bien planificados, en caso de que la verdadera incidencia de estos efectos esté por el orden del cuatro por mil como ha sido sugerido haciendo correcciones al trabajo de Koch30. Los datos de estos trabajos siempre tendrán un componente empírico y serán desestimados cuando se logre mejorar el almacenamiento de la sangre. La meta deberá ser comprender completamente la lesión de almacenamiento y para ellos se necesitará de la colaboración de banqueros de sangre, fisiólogos de eritrocitos y químicos acompañados de equipamiento de última tecnología. Los científicos expertos en proteómica y metabolómica son los calificados en avanzar en esta área. De toda esa información se tomarán las decisiones futuras para el desarrollo de los mejores sistemas de almacenamiento.
