What do these figures mean? Click on the hyperlink to display the details.

(A) Journal Impact Factor Definition:

The average number of times articles from the journal published in the

past two years have been cited in the JCR year. Which means:

What is the “average performance” over a 2-year span?

Calculation: Cites in 2007 to articles published in 2005and 2006

=

Number of articles published in 2005 and 2006

=

=

(B) 5-year Journal Impact Factor Definition:

The average number of times articles from the journal published in the

past five years have been cited in the JCR year. Which means:

What is the “average performance” over a 5-year span?

Calculation: Cites in 2007 to items published in the previous 5 years (2002 to 2006) = Number of items published in the previous 5 years (2002 to 2006)

=

=

5

(C) Immediacy Index The immediacy index is the average number of times an article is cited in

Definition:

the year it is published. Which means:

How “hot” are the articles? — the speed with which citations of a specific journal appear in the published literature, and helps to identify journals in emerging areas of research.

Calculation: Cites to current articles =

Number of recent articles

=

=

(D) Cited Half Life Definition:

The median

age of the articles that were cited in the JCR year.

Which means:

Do others cite old or new articles of this journal?

Calculation:

Cited half life is ________ (which means articles published in this journal between 1997 and 1998 (inclusive) account for 50% of all citations to articles from this journal in 2007.)

(E) Citing Half Life Definition:

The median

age of articles cited by the journal in the JCR year.

Which means:

Do articles in this journal cite old or new publications?

Citing half life is ________ (which means 50% of all articles cited by articles in this journal in 2007 were published between 1998 and 1999 [inclusive].) 6

Eigenfactor Metrics The Eigenfactor™ Metrics are available only for JCR years 2007 and later. More details: Visit www.eigenfactor.org.

(i)

Eigenfactor Score Definition:

Measures the number of times articles from the journal published in the past five years have been cited in the JCR year.

Calculation: No. of citations (excluding self-citations) = Total number of articles

Note: Similar to Impact Factor, except that: 1. The number of citations to journals in both the sciences and the social sciences. 2. Exclude self-citations.

(ii)

Article Influence Score Definition:

Measures the relative importance of the journal on a per-article basis.

Calculation: Journal's Eigenfactor Score = The fraction of articles published by the journal

Note: 1. The fraction is normalized so that the sum total of articles from all journals is 1. 2. The mean Article Influence Score is 1.00. A score greater than 1.00 indicates that each article in the journal has above-average influence. A score less than 1.00 indicates that each article in the journal has below-average influence.

“Using quantitative citation data to measure impact is meaningful context of journals in the same

only in the

general discipline.

For example, smaller fields like crystallography do not generate as many articles or citations as do larger fields such as biotechnology or genetics. Likewise, in some areas, particularly in the arts and humanities, it may take a relatively long time for an article to attract a meaningful number of citations. But in other areas, such as the life sciences, it is not unusual for citations to accrue rapidly and peak after two or three years. ~ http://scientific.thomson.com/free/essays/selectionofmaterial/journalselection/
