School began on Tuesday again this week, as we enjoyed another long weekend, celebrating Waitangi Day here in New Zealand.

At the Primary assembly this week, we recognised a number of new leaders in this section of the school.

Firstly, we awarded badges and certificates to our new monitors for 2021, with many Year Six students now taking on new responsibilities. We also had the opportunity to award badges to our new Class Captains for this term.

A huge congratulations to both set of recipients.

On Thursday this week, ACG Sunderland College held their annual swimming carnival at West Wave and it was again a huge success, with excellent participation from most students. The focus of the day is similar to the Athletics day, with our six Houses all competing for coveted accolade of being named House Champions.

As we went to print this week, the results were still being collated. However, the outcome of the most important race of the day – the staff vs students’ event - Congratulations to our students.

On Friday this week, the first of our University presentations took place at our regular Senior Assembly.

At these events, each of the key New Zealand Universities come and present to our students who are beginning to look at all their options. Other providers also present, such as the Military, Apprentice organisations and all the Polytech career.

Starting School Everyone’s first day is exceedingly difficult including mine; You do not know anyone and are alone. Some people have an ability to make friends within a second, but for some people it is a challenge. But eventually everyone will overcome obstacles and become much more comfortable.

ACG subjects and classes is just such a beautiful place of learning, enjoyment, freedom, and laughter. All the embarrassing funny moments just bring a smile to my face. Intermediate is simply Amazing every moment is worth living, enjoying, and remembering. But out all the days our first day will always be cherished.

Starting School . . . Again Starting school was a frightening experience for me on my first day a Sunderland as a Year 7 but this year all of that is different my second year at ACG as a Year 8.

ACG Sunderland is different to other schools in a good way, we all start earlier than most schools and we dive straight into learning on the last two periods on the First day. Most schools don’t stress the first couple of weeks and just chill ‘till actual school kicks in. Here at Sunderland the first term is a vital part of the year.

We have several activities, swimming sports and athletics day, so we are moving again after the long relaxing and fun time of us not putting our brains to good use. I believe this is the best way to start a because it makes us aware and helps prevent most people from wasting time dreading and doing nothing.

Sunderland also offers many leadership roles and sporting clubs and many more, including The Student Voice. You can be house leader or head girl/ boy if you are in Year 13. But if you are in the lower college you can go for class captain, sports captain and many more. For year tens later in the year they also have a chance for associate leader (house captains choose them), so you are never going to feel useless or excluded because you will find an activity fit for you. And made for you.

Taylor Swift Appreciation Society (TSAS) Friday the 5th was the first meeting of the Taylor Swift Appreciation Society. I am not a fan of Taylor Swift, but my two best friends are huge fans of her, so I followed them into the meeting. In the meeting Mr O’Conner asked what songs we would like to sing. My friends were all so confident about what songs they wanted, I was sitting there, acting as if I knew exactly what they were talking about. We chose about 20 songs, narrowing down to about 10.

We started on Love Story. For me it was quite scary for me to start singing aloud.

The worst bit was having a friend who is so confident and good at singing.

I thought I wouldn’t enjoy being part of the Society as much but surprisingly I had a lot of fun. Whenever I listen to Taylor Swift songs, I know the back story of some of the songs and can understand what she is singing about having said that I’m still not a fan yet. I am looking forward for the next meeting and learning more about Taylor Swift along with the potential outcome of me becoming a fan like my friends...

New club for College students: Rōpū Sunderland On Wednesday, 10th February, a new after-school club will be starting for College students. The name of the club, Rōpū Sunderland, translates to Sunderland Group. The group will learn about all things Māori and will be equally suitable for those who want to learn more about the Māori culture and those who are already familiar with tikanga Māori.

In Term One, students will create and practise their pepeha, translate the school song into te reo Māori, create and learn a Sunderland Haka and learn some Māori songs and stories. We are very fortunate to have an external provider delivering the content of the programme. The club will run from 3.20-4.50pm each Wednesday, and it is intended that students attend each week so they can follow the programme.

Senior Tutorials Tutorials are offered to students as a means to give extra support and guidance. The key to tutorials is be prepared.

Examples of what you could get help with and what you should bring include, but are not limited to: • • • • •

Review past exam questions Specific questions related to the course Practice essays Questions on your coursework Teacher is reviewing a specific area you are not confident in.

The key is being specific, and remember that staff like it when you are proactive. The tutorial is the opportunity to look closely at the requirements of a piece of work with the guidance of a staff member.

Parents and Friends of ACG Sunderland This is a small group of parent volunteers who assist in supporting the school and our student body. We get together at the beginning of each month at 8.30am in the Boardroom. Our first meeting is next Thursday 18 February.

Chess Thanks to Mr Christoph Thurner, we have several opportunities for chess players in the school this year: 1.

Primary School Chess classes starting Tuesday of Week 5 (23/02) for years 3-6, organised by Mrs Butler & Mr Baker.

A group during Tuesday lunchtimes in Room L11, where students learn with workbooks ($10 per workbook, no other fees), open to students of all ages. The minimum requirement is that the students know how the pieces move. College Chess teams will be formed from this group.

A Tuesday afternoon group for high-level competition students.

Private Coaching ($40 per 30 minutes) at ACG Sunderland. Times to be arranged.
