CALENDAR GIRLS

The Babes of Borgata Calendar is back for 2013 and Turnersville resident Stephanie Calabrese (far left) is on the cover. PHOTO PROVIDED

Borgata Babe from Turnersville graces 2013 cover

For a model, getting on the cover is the pinnacle. It’s no less so when you’re a cocktail server at Borgata and you get picked for the 2013 return of the Babes of Borgata Calendar. Turnersville resident Stephanie Calabrese says she’s beside herself after being selected for the coveted slot. “I can’t explain it. It does not feel real. Modeling is something I always wanted to do. And I’m so excited to be picked for the cover,” said Calabrese, a B-Bar server who hopes she can parlay the cover into an audition on “Dancing with the Stars.” This marks the first Babes calendar since 2009. “We had demand for it. People on the casino floor would ask,” said Borgata spokesman Brian Brennan. The casino hotel stopped in part because competitors put out similar calendars. “It became too common,” said Senior

Vice President of Operations Joe Lupo. “But we thought with our new campaign of ‘The Show Never Ends,’ it was a good opportunity to once again bring back the calendar, highlight the Babes of Borgata and exhibit our brand as only Borgata can.” The calendar features 13 Borgata Babes, one for each month and the cover. The new calendar was photographed Amber Gray, whose portfolio includes Maybelline, Marie Claire, Mont Blanc, Sony, Madame Figaro, Elle Germany, Penelope Cruz, Beyonce, Selena Gomez, Maria Sharapova, John Turturro, Nina Hagen and Tyra Banks. Gray’s most recent project was the “The Show That Never Ends” branding campaign, which used surreal imagery to create a sense of playfulness and whimsy. The 2013 Babes of Borgata were chosen after an audition of more than 100 employ-

ees. “It is truly an honor to be featured in such a unique and tastefully designed project,” said Calabrese, a Rowan University graduate. “From the auditions, to the shoot, to the calendar launch, this has been an awesome experience, one that I will remember forever.” Staffers did her hair and make-up. The shoot itself took less than 45 minutes, she said. “They took photos in MIXX, a Water Club suite, the Gypsy Bar and the bake shop,” said Calabrese, who’s been working at Borgata for a year and a half. In addition to other shots, Gray took photos of Calabrese on a blackjack table as a dealer on the casino floor. “Each shot was very unique,” Brennan said. Calabrese not only graces the calendar

cover, but billboards on the White Horse Pike and the Atlantic City Expressway and throughout the casino hotel. Selling for $13.95, the 2013 calendar is available through the Borgata at WHIM, Cameo at The Water Club and shopborgata.com. The official launch party for the calendar is Monday at mur.mur nightclub with music by DJ Ruckus. This year, Borgata will offer the opportunity to access exclusive footage from the Babes of Borgata 2013 Calendar through social media. Borgata’s Facebook page will post an individual behind-the-scenes video starting with the cover girl. Guests can like Borgata’s page and enter the Babes of Borgata contest for the chance to win a personalized calendar, exclusive meetand-greet with the girls and VIP bottle service at mur.mur.

Despite Hurricane Sandy’s heavy toll on many communities along the New Jersey coastline, the Greater Atlantic City Golf Association’s 19 golf courses escaped relatively unscathed, association officials report. The lone exception was The Links at Brigantine Beach, which reopened last week . “Much like Atlantic City’s casino hotels, our golf courses are operational and in excellent condition,” said Tom Sullivan, president of GACGA. “The association is an integral part of the Atlantic City community and the region. In that vein, we invite visitors who are not dealing with the aftermath of the storm to return to the area, enjoy a round of golf and visit the casino resorts. By encouraging our guests to return to the region, we hope to be able to help stimulate the regional economy and thus contribute to the recovery and rebuilding process.” In addition, the GACGA supports relief efforts in the region through a food drive lasting until Dec. 21. All member

courses serve as drop-off points for donations of nonperishable food items, which will be turned over to the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, Southern Branch, which oversees Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland and Southeastern Burlington counties. For more information on how you can help, call (609) 383-8843, or visit www.cfbnj.org. The member clubs of the Greater Atlantic City Golf Association are: Atlantic City Country Club, Ballamor Golf Club, Blue Heron Pines Golf Club, Cape May National Golf Club, Hamilton Trails Golf Club, Harbor Pines Golf Club, The Links at Brigantine Beach, Mays Landing Golf & Country Club, McCullough’s Emerald Golf Links, Running Deer Golf Club, Sand Barrens Golf Club, Scotland Run Golf Club, Sea Oaks Golf Club, Shore Gate Golf Club, Stockton Seaview Golf Resort’s Bay and Pines courses, Twisted Dune Golf Club, Vineyard Golf at Renault, Wildwood Golf & Country Club. He usually flies through the air on a reindeer-drawn sleigh, but for the next three Saturdays, the big fella will dive into the big tank at the Atlantic City Aquarium with edible goodies for the stingrays and other tank residents. Visitors on Saturday and again on Dec. 15 and 22, can watch and interact with Santa in scuba gear during the 11 a.m. feeding show. “Santa will dive for approximately 20 minutes as he delivers presents (food) to the cownose rays. Santa’s most trusted elf will ensure Groman, the 200-pound loggerhead sea turtle, doesn’t swim off with Santa’s hat or presents,” said Lisa Schall, assistant executive director for the aquarium. At noon and 3 p.m., it’s feeding time for bat rays and others. Visitors can hand-

feed these species by purchasing cups of food for $2. At 2 p.m., visitors can get close to the aquarium’s more unusual inhabitants at the Exotic Animal Show, which features the largest species of scorpion in the world and the softest furred mammal in the world.

Many bands consider themselves artists first, and rehearse for hours on end to perfect their sound and style. Drop Dead Sexy is not one of those bands. “Our whole project is about fun and being goofy and not taking yourself too seriously,” said lead singer Paul Dersch said. Drop Dead Sexy has been entertaining audiences up and down the East Coast with its over-the-top stage show and extensive song repertoire for more than a decade. The band might sport Afro wigs for a Jackson Five number. Wigs and glasses for Lady Gaga. Fat Elvis suits for an Elvis medley. “In the real world, such behavior usually ends up with someone getting arrested, but in the world of DDS, this is a typical work day,” said the Washington Township native. Why the name? “It obviously has a ring to it and the website was free at the time,” said Dersch, who lives now in Somerdale. “But no one is drop dead sexy particularly.” Dersch, who studied clarinet and piano in his youth and sang for a choir, left his previous band because he wanted to do this for a living. “When the lead singer left, I had the opportunity to audition and got the part. It’s a huge commitment,” he said. Drop Dead Sexy tackles every musical genre, Dersch said. The group’s material ranges from country and rap to techno and modern to classic rock and Motown. In any particular set, guests can hear songs from the likes of Lady Gaga, Queen, Bon Jovi or Michael Jackson. The band has established a niche with

its unique medleys. The band strikes a balance between enjoying what they’re doing and playing what people want to hear, Dersch said. “It’s a detailed art form trying to pick the right material. But it’s one of the things we pride ourselves on,” he said. Dersch equates the club scene with the MTV generation. “They’re like ‘Don’t bore us, get to the chorus and the hottest part of each song,’” he said. Atlantic City crowds tend to be older than audiences at small clubs elsewhere. “So we skew the music older. We’re a little more laid-back and casual. By the end of the first set someone dresses as a woman for ‘I’ve Had the Time of My Life.’ People get it. The volume’s not as loud. It’s fun and vibrant.”
