Senator Zenith Lin

MESSAGE FROM NATIONAL PRESIDENT Dear Readers of Riverlights 2019 is a year full of challenges; our society is on significant changes, as a leadership training organization, I always asked myself what our position in this social movement is? What can we do to solve the current situation? JCI is an international leadership development organization, and our objective is to develop leaders. I believe that providing opportunities to young people, using the Active Citizen Framework to teach them critical thinking, provide them skills for solving problems is what we should do and what we always do. During these few months, I have witnessed JCI Sha Tin has done a great job to arouse Hong Kong Citizens' attention to social issues through projects. Quality projects like Love of the Earth, V-Support, and Project Bull-eye has also provided development opportunities to members. Joining the Sha Tin Dragon Boat competition is a tradition of JCI Shatin. This event was not only designed for JCI Shatin members, all JCI members are welcomed to join our team. This year we have over 40 members from 14 chapters (including Shatin) joined the team. And the competition was successfully held on 7 Jun 2019 (Dragon Boat Festival) on Sha Tin Shing Mun River. The training started two months ago before the race, and we were becoming stronger and stronger during the process. Besides training, we also have many team building activities eg. Karaoke, eating hotpot, playing “Avalon”, etc. The weather was extremely hot on the competition day, but it can’t suppress the passion and morale of our fellow Jayceettes & Jaycees. Although we did not earn any medals in the competition, but the most important outcome is that we built up our friendship, shared our joy and faced the challenges TOGETHER AS A TEAM. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the Jayceettes & Jaycees who joined as a part of the dragon boat team and supporters. See you again next year!

INTERVIEW WITH MIKE YIP “CHERISH THE MOMENT, CHERISH NOW R=Randy, M=Mike R: You studied Interior Architecture in the United Kingdom, but why would you become an actor instead of working in the related field? M: I am interested in artistic creation. Creative industry is very interesting that you can create what is in your mind. When I studied Interior Architecture in the UK, I had a chance to be a host of local travel programs, a sub-channel of Sky UK. It was very enjoyable that I was responsible for the on-location, sports and festivals. I applied to a pilot in a local airline when I was back in Hong Kong. However, I failed the interview lastly. I understand it is hard to become an actor, and I am really keen on and enjoy performing arts.

R: Did you study performing arts? M: I joined Fei’s Performance and met my first mentor Arumimihifumi (Kao Yu Fei). She is very disciplined and demanding. I learnt the right attitude to be a performer from her. I have learnt dancing for nearly 4 years and my dance instructor Andy Wong, a very famous choreographer and dancer in Hong Kong. He provided many dance shows and performances to me. I met my drama instructor, Dr. LAM Lap-Sam, he let me know being a good actor not only have a good condition, but also be a good person. R: Do your family support you to be an actor? M: At the beginning, my family did not understand my decision, but they had no objection. They felt happy until I invited them to watch my show.

014

R: What difficulty(ies) did you come across? How did you face and solve it / them? M: Unstable income is a common difficulty of being an actor / actress. I remember that I got around HK$300 only in my account, so I joined less social activities. Fortunately, the government administers a cash handout scheme that year. I was frustrated in unsuccessful experience and self-doubt. R: What was the most unforgettable film? M: In 2016, I remember that the weather was very cold during shooting. The temperature was about 5 . I got a film named Shed Skin Papa with Mr. Francis Ng Chun-yu and I was nervous as I was a fresh actor. I acted his body double and the period of age 19 and 26 to 28 of him. Before shooting, I half naked and make up for 3 hours. It was unexpected that Francis was very kind and took care of me. In July, I got a costume film shooting in Shing Mun Reservoir. The historical costume contained many layers and it was extremely hot. It was interesting and unforgettable that I met Mr. Chow Yun-fat running alone there and he spoke a few words to me and went away.

MEN’S MENTAL HEALTH DAY According to WHO, the global Male: Female ratio of age-standardized suicide rates was 1.8 in 2016, meaning there were more male’s suicides than female’s suicides. Poor mental health affects men and boys of all ages across the community and means that they cannot live their lives to the full. Even worse, too many men try to remain ‘strong and in control’, feeling that asking for help is unmanly and weak.

Connecting with friends and family helps to protect men from poor mental health and suicide when the tough times come but too often men feel that they can’t share their problems. This contributes to the high suicide rate among men, with approximately three quarters of all deaths by suicide being men. Men’s Mental Health Day was being held in 2019 to raise awareness of how signs and symptoms of mental health conditions may present themselves differently in men, and to normalize conversations about mental health issues to reduce the stigma that often prevents men from seeking help. To learn the situation in Hong Kong, we were conducted online and offline survey for different age groups of men of their mental health. Also, we ran the roadshows in Central, Causeway Bay and Mongkok to promote the importance of Men’s mental Health. SHA TIN YAU SAY Ordinary Member Engee Ling Thank you very much for the opportunity to join JCI Sha Tin. I started joining JCI events and activities in March 2019 and my most memorable event was the Sports Day and the dinner celebration afterwards. I appreciate how from participating in different JCI events and activities, there were invaluable opportunities to build friendships, to serve the community and to have personal growth. I look forward to joining future JCI events and activities.

Ordinary Member Kimchi Kam In December 2018, I was invited by my colleague Elaine Tang to attend an introduction seminar of JCI ShaTin. At that moment, I was a fresh graduate student who was young, wild & free, and I chose Wealth Management as the starting point of my career which desperately requires leadership. 'JC is a place allows future leaders making mistake as long as it is beneficial for their growth, transforming youngsters into bright leaders.' was the message I received on that day. For the sake of earning some social experiences at a low cost, I dropped my $500. The first committee I have joined is Business Affairs Project which is chaired by President Elect Yannes Wong. The project is challenging and innovative since we organize the whole event from scratch. It is worthy since the experienced OC teammates taught me correct attitude. I am glad to join this JC big family since people there are nice and friendly, I have a lot of fun with them. Finally, be a dream catcher. Be a dreamer who hits the ground.

Ordinary Member Vincent Pun It is my pressure to join JCI Sha Tin- the big family. Since the PMO in December 2019, I feel the passion of the officers and former members. The diversified activities, service and training programs attracted me to become a member, since I always wanted to be a tomorrow's leader. So, I designed to join JCI Sha Tin and wish to have remarkable journey. Once I joined JCI, there already are so many events waiting for me to join. So, I became the one of orientation members in certain events, for example, MFG and Men's Mental health Day. In those functions, I gained experience in organizing events. This help me to well develop cooperating and inspiration skills. I am happy that I joined JCI Sha Tin.
