MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT It is my honor to be the President of my beloved Chapter. This is an amazing journey for me to develop myself with every JC member. Being a President is a fruitful and challenging task for me. Balancing my work, start up business, families and JC life, it is really a tough process, time management and priority management become very important. I have learnt from many failures and I am grateful that a lot of people showing me support during the year of my presidency. Thank you very much! 2018 is a remarkable year for our Chapter as it is our pleasure to witness the birth of the first National President from our Chapter. It is one of our honorable moments. Another one is being the hosting chapter of the 53 rd JCI Hong Kong National Convention under the leadership of National President Senator Ronald Kan. I believe that responsibility come with opportunities. The positives changes of JCI Sha Tin are supported by our positive changes. Remember our post in 2018, holding up our first finger, it means “United as One”. We are together and strive for our excellence, we “Direct our Future”.

Senator Ronald Kan

MESSAGE FROM NATIONAL PRESIDENT It has been a great year for JCI Sha Tin under the leadership of President Philip and his team. The theme “Direct our Future” aligns with the JCI Hong Kong theme of “Beyond BeLive” in that it is an encouragement to Jaycees to take charge of their lives and develop into leaders for positive change in the community. Being a leader in JCI has always been about how a person acts when given a position of leadership and has never been about their position in life. The role entails much more than just giving orders and telling people what to do. As a leader, you need to inspire your members to be motivated to work towards a common goal and share a journey. Somehow, you need to make sure that the members are empowered to make positive change in the community while at the same time developing themselves to realize their potential. To do this, a leader needs to know each member extremely well. It is important to know your members’ individual strengths and weaknesses, and their values and beliefs. Leaders can create an environment of progression and impact by first recognizing that each member is an individual and then linking all the members together with a common purpose. The JCI platform is an established method for young people to develop into phenomenal leaders and perform work that benefits the community. Although it is a voluntary organisation, members are dedicated to constantly improving themselves and taking a hands on approach to learning. There are vast opportunities to JCI and I encourage members to take chances and fully participate for the greatest effect! An opportunity coming up soon is World Congress in Goa, India. International opportunities are often cited as the most memorable and worthwhile experiences in JCI. Please do not hesitate to join us and start changing your destiny. “It doesn’t matter where you are, you are nowhere compared to where you can go.” (Bob Proctor) Beyond BeLive!

MESSAGE FROM NATIONAL ASSIGNED EXECUTIVE OFFICER It’s my great pleasure to be here sharing a few words. A Flagship project can mean a lot. It has been 19 years for consecutively launching “Love of the Earth” in JCI Sha Tin. This year, JCI Sha Tin found that there is a need for environmental protection in Sha Tin area. Therefore, “Bike to Green Society” appears to promote cycling as means of transportation to work for a short distance. The main objective of this project is to promote low carbon emission activity to the public. I am very glad that 6 corporates from Science Park has signed the charter for supporting cycling as a replacement of transportation in the opening ceremony. This project is full of localized style especially for Sha Tin citizens which is in line with Sustainable Development Goal 3 Good Health and Goal 13 Climate Action. That fulfills the “Impact” focus of JCI Hong Kong this year too. In addition, I am so impressed that JCI Sha Tin is taking up the role to host 53 rd National Convention this year with paying extremely high effort that whole chapter’s members and Past Presidents supported this year event! It’s not easy recruiting 35 Organizing committee and helpers participating in whereas 47 registration of JCI Sha Tin for joining National Convention’s programs and training at this moment. I wish to see every member creating positive changes in JCI Sha Tin for their self-improvement and enhancement this year!

N: How did you started to swim? S: At the beginning, swimming was like a survival skill for me so I have to learn it. And then I wanted to join the school team with my friends so I worked hard to practice. N: When did you decided to be a professional swimmer? S: I decided after my graduation from University. Studying and swimming are both important to me so I didn’t make my final decision till the end of my semester. N: What do you want to be if you are not a swimmer? S: Maybe I would find a job related to my Major. I am not sure if I had made a right decision. N: Who gave you the strongest support when you came up with this decision? S: I heard a lot of opinions from my family, teachers and friends and all of them were so supportive. The most impressive conversation is one of my friend told me that there is no difference to retire at 68 or 70 years old if you want to find a job, so you should work harder and harder in these 2 years for the Olympic Game. I encourage teenagers to try and learn, failure is a good teacher for us. 015

N: After joining so many competitions I think you are very experienced to deal with stress. Can you give us some advice? S: I suggest you could set a reasonable goal and divide it into long-term and short-term targets. It keeps your motivation and you will be inspired by achieving the targets one by one. Sometimes we should seek for the help from others rather than fighting alone. I never think I’ve already worked so hard, there must be some improvement I can be done. N: During the National Convention theme seminar, you mentioned consistency is one of the most important elements of success. Can you share your experience to us? S: I think family and friends are really helpful to remind you the goal you want to achieve. Sometimes we will lose ourselves and direction, all we need is to remember the reason of why we are so eager to achieve our goals. N: On the road to success, you must heard some negative comments or gossipy from the others. How do you face them? S: I think the first thing we need to do is to realize that we are all human. Everyone is not perfect and we make mistakes. Then, we should open our ears and listen from the others so we should learn and improve ourselves. N: Beside of swimming, you are starting your career in the Entertainment Industry. Do you find the similarity between them? S: They are two total different industries but I can say they are get closer and closer nowadays. I think Sport is becoming more popular in Hong Kong and it became another way of entertainment for the public.

N: You are the most outstanding swimmer in Hong Kong but you are also the freshmen in the Entertainment Industry. What is the most difficult problem you are dealing with? S: The contradiction is very big since you are working with the highest standard in swimming and you found yourself is not good enough to reach the same standard in the other industry. Keep yourself humble and learn from everyone arounds you are helping me to improve. However, swimming is still my top priority. N: Thank you Stephanie! We’ve learned a lot from you and your experience is a very good guidance to us. I hope we could see you in the JCI events in the future. S: Thank you Nero. Have you ever thought about your future? How about meeting the future you 50 years later? We found part of the answers at JCI Sha Tin 2018 March Monthly Fellowship Gathering "The Elderly Explorer - The Time Machine" held on 25 March 2018! We got on-board to our mysterious time machine and took the journey to the future to explore the uncertainties coming ahead with a full house of participants at Jockey Club Life Journey Centre! Through this 60-minute journey, we created an impactful experience for our passengers to re-think what was meant by “youth” and “elderly” through a series of multi-media experiences such as digital games and interactive activities coming with special audio and visual effects. We learnt more about ageing and concept of time from a series of interactive games and discussions. Time won’t wait. We have to treasure our time and the people around us! Here, I would like to thank Supervising Officer Vice President Curt Shek and my Organizing Committee team members, Esther Chan, Toby Leung and Ricky Wong, for their support and effort paid to organize this meaningful event. PROJECT BULLSEYE 2018 2018 GREAT LEAP TO PROSPEROUS JIANGMEN The project mainly consisted of 3 parts, which were Pre Trip Seminar, 3 days exchange tour in Jiangmen, and Post Trip Seminar. The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area is a hot topic in economic development in Hong Kong. Back to 2002, our Chapter had a visionary move by signing a friendship pact with Jiangmen Youth Federation. Jiangmen is one of the 12 cores of the bay area and hence, we could see the need of bringing youngsters and JCI members to explore the opportunities and recent development in Jiangmen by hosting a 3-day exchange tour.

The Pre Trip Seminar was successfully held on 9 June. We invited Mr. Chois Choi and Mr. Michael Lau to be our Guest Speakers. Mr. Chois Choi, the founder of Source Network Media Group Limited, runs his own social media business in China. He shared his path of building up his business and thus, we could understand more about the cultural differences between China and Hong Kong as well as the way to overcome the gap. Furthermore, Mr. Michael Lau talked about his tea business which is located in Jiangmen, the Two Elephant Tea. His company was invited by the TusStar that he could start-up his business in the TusStar incubator. He shared with us all the pros and cons of doing business in an incubator in Jiangmen.

025

The exchange tour was held on 30 June to 2 July. A total number of 48 Jaycees and other participants joined this 3-day trip to Jiangmen in order to explore the opportunities behind this beautiful city. We had brought our participants to 6 spots that could represent the economic development in Jiangmen. Nowadays, ambitious graduates tend to have a start-up business rather than finding a job. However, Hong Kong lacks of space and angel fundings to cultivate start-up businesses. Whereas, in Jiangmen, there is a place called “TusStar”, where startupers can gain various kinds of resources to develop their business. Some participants have decided to apply to start-up their business in TusStar after the visit. Other than that, we are glad to visit our Friendly Organization Jiangmen Youth Federation, their members were so helpful in arranging our tour. It has been 15 years since our friendship and we hope that we can keep our friendship by launching more meaningful projects to the society in the future. The Post Trip Seminar is held on 15 July. We are honored to invite Mr. Chan Hok Ming (司徒夾帶), Creative Director of Vlogger Entertainment Limited, as our Guest Speaker. He shared his experience of becoming a famous YouTuber and how he developed his online entertainment business by recruiting more potential Youtubers. After an inspiring sharing from Mr. Chan, we had group discussion with our participants in relation to their thought and feedback of the 3-day trip of Jiangmen. The atmosphere was very good and every participant gave positive comments about the 3-day trip and JCI Sha Tin. Some of them even enrolled as Prospective Members during the event. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to President Philip Cheng, Project Advisor Senator Leo Ip, Supervising Officer Vice President Michele Lau; and my beloved Organizing Committee (OC) team members include OC (Secretary and Logistics) Dmitry Chan, OC (Program) Eric Wong, OC (Promotion and Registration) Prisca Lui. Inspired by Korea’s megahit reality show Running Man, JCI Sha Tin successfully turned 27 members (with some friends from other Chapters) into Running Buddies and put them to a real and fun challenge on 11 February 2018. In the 120-minute challenge, the Running Buddies did not have the option to ‘give up’. The group was split into four teams. They must compete against each other to get the championship. But was it only a competition? It was way beyond that. To untangle complexities, remove roadblocks, unlock puzzles, escape from dangers (or put others in danger!), we have to use our judgment, trust your teammates, be clever and witty, and work effectively as a team to gain competitive edge. It was very exciting to see that all Running Buddies were running around aisles and corridors, fighting, sweating, challenging themselves and other teams. SHA TIN YAU SAYS Membership Affairs Director Yannes Yam I have been joining JCI Sha Tin for 2 years. I was a shy girl and was never given a chance to take lead of anyone before joining JC. In JC, it really is my eye-opening journey. “Practice makes Perfect I found that there are many opportunities for me to practice and therefore, I treasure every chance to develop myself as a better person. I believe that the members of JCI Sha Tin have witnessed the positive changes that I made in the last 2 years. For instance, I was the Organizing Committee (OC) of Annual General Meeting (AGM) or both 2016 and 2017, I am still interested in being an OC of AGM 2018. Going through almost the same program of AGM, the date was confirmed, the venue setting and the combination of OC team members who came from different walk of lives would create different synergies. I enjoyed in discussing the program rundown over and over again so as to seek for improvements while organizing events. In addition, under my leadership of being the Chairman of a Monthly Fellowship Gathering (MFG), the MFG won the Best MFG of the Year Award in 2017. Serving the Chapter as Membership Affairs (MA) Officer and MA Director have given me a lot of great chances to get in touch with many people, these allowed me to develop myself as an open-minded person. I am so grateful to build up and strengthen the relationships with different members because it is absolutely meaningful.

Ordinary Member Cath Leung In May 2018, my good friend Eric Wong introduced me JCI Sha Tin and brought me in. I am working in Airport Authority Hong Kong as a civil engineer. And I would like to join JCI Sha Tin to explore more about the world and be inspired. I believe that everyone is a unique individual and it is valuable to get to know each other. Within this short period of time, from May 2018 to now, I joined different activities organized by JCI Sha Tin, such as the exchange tour to Jiangmen and the Organizing Committee team of the Annual General Meeting 2018. It is a brand-new start to my personal journey to experience the community while it is never too late to start.

Ordinary Member Sherman Yu Sherman has joined JCI Sha Tin mid 2018 after attending the Prospective Members Orientation to broaden her perspectives of both the community and internationally. She is a civil engineer and likes to travel, play tennis and ski. Sherman is interested in leadership development and would love to gain more experience in management and public speaking. Having joined JCI for around 2 months, she has noticed that this group of young individuals have passion to create a more positive change within the community. Sherman looks forward to further involvement in JCI events and continue developing leadership skills.

Ordinary Member Eric Wong First of all, I would like to give my thanks to President Philip Cheng that give me a opportunity to join the Sha Tin JC family. Let me introduce myself briefly, I have two jobs, I am a Sales Engineer of electronic component at the same time I have a production house which was started 3 years ago with two partners. I love taking pictures with my Polaroid camera. I like to share the happiness while share the photo instantly. Among the 4 JC areas, I think that Leadership Development attracted me the most. If people would like to create positive change to the society, it would also require strong leadership skills to motivate the others at the same time. What I learned from JC in the past half year is “No pain, No gain. If we want to do something awesome, we need to put a lot of effort on it. This is one of the most important things that I have learned in JC so far.

Ordinary Member Tom Chan With my sincere thank you, current National Vice President Elect Senator Kelly Ngan introduced me to JCI Sha Tin. MESSAGE FROM CHIEF EDITOR Dear Readers, It is my great pleasure to present to you this year’s issue of Riverlight. Despite the usual opportunities areas at JCI, namely Business Affairs, Community Development, International Affairs and Leadership Development. 2018 is a remarkable year for JCI Sha Tin, as we were the hosting chapter for 2018 JCIHK National Convention, together with Senator Ronald Kan to be the National President of JCIHK, Riverlight records the achievement of JCI Sha Tin in 2018, proving that “Direct our Future” is not merely a theme or a dream, but is a life story that empowers us to create positive change. More than any other publications, Riverlight provides development opportunities for JCI Sha Tin to excery their potentials to perform any editorial work with limited resources. Publication Team confers inspiring values on Riverlight, and to encourage one to embrace all challenges in life through featured interviews with public figures in Hong Kong. To be honest, it was a tough decision to be the chief editor of Riverlight because I have rarely any experiences about publication. But now I am truly thankful to President Philip, who has given me the chance to try something new in life and created positive change. Thank you for reading and I hope you have all enjoyed reading this Riverlight. Let us keep directing our future in 2018!

Nero Chung Vice President Junior Chamber International Sha Tin
