Your 2021 - 22 Students’ Association Executive Ashley Fordyce
ACCSA President - sapresident@assiniboine.net Hello, my name is Ashley Fordyce, your President at the Assiniboine Community College Students’ Association (ACCSA) for the school year 2021-2022. I have been part of Assiniboine Community College (ACC) since January 2020. I recently graduated with my Mature High School Diploma from the ACC Adult Collegiate in June 2021 and am now in my first year as a Practical Nursing student. As we continue to face the challenges brought by the Covid-19 Pandemic, there is no doubt that we will continue to have routines and protocols to become familiar with, but I am confident in being able to start the school year positively. I am excited for everything the Students’ Association has planned for this year. One of the main reasons I joined the Students’ Association is to educate, fight causes, and change minds about mental health and its impact on students. I aspire to spread positivity and will work hard to ensure you have an amazing experience here at ACC. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions, concerns, or ideas you may have. I look forward to meeting you.
Nathanial Bridges
ACCSA VP Governance - savpgov@assiniboine.net Hello to all new and returning students. I am Nathanial Bridges, your Vice President of Governance for the 2021-2022 School year, I am looking forward to being one of your executive representatives. I am a second year Land and Water Management student with a keen interest in sustainable practices and its impacts on society, the economy, and the environment. I have also been the Agriculture and Environment Representative in my first year, which has provided me with great insight into the workings of the council to be more effective in the coming year. As a personable, determined, and dedicated individual I am looking forward to serving and representing our student community. I plan to review our policies to ensure that the Students' Association remains an effective organization and keep our financial and governing actions accountable. My executive colleagues and I have big plans to promote student engagement this year so we can best address what you look for in your college experience. If you have any ideas, questions, and concerns I would be more than happy for you to contact me, I am always available to my fellow students. Thank you all for the opportunity and I look forward to hearing from you.

ACC Students’ Association Activities & Events Student-run events are the highlight of every academic year! The ACCSA is responsible for planning and executing activities such as beer bashes, socials, health & wellness initiatives, and family-fun events. We also work with all ACC departments, and several community partners to make sure there is something for everybody! For information about what’s coming up at your campus, or if you’re looking to get involved with any of these events, the best place to find all of this information is the ACCSA Events Calendar located at accstudents.com/events. This calendar not only tracks ACCSA and Club events, but it also houses several events by areas of the College, such as Indigenous Affairs, Learning Commons, International Office, and more. You can even submit your own events on this calendar so everybody will know what's happening!
Student Spaces The ACCSA works hard to make sure that students have a place to relax and reset while on campus. Due to COVID-19, many efforts are being put towards adapting these spaces to allow for proper social distancing, and ensure that those students that need to attend campus can also find a space that is inviting (and appealing) between classes! Below are just some of the spaces that the ACCSA has in place for students. •
Our renovated Crossroads area features a bright and inviting lounge setting, Smart TV’s with access to Netflix and a Games Room with pool tables, at the Victoria Avenue East campus.
•
At the Len Evans Centre for Trades and Technology you’ll find a lounge area, a Smart TV with access to Netflix, and two pool tables in The Link area.
•
Also at the North Hill campus, students can now enjoy a lounge area in the M. I. C. A building, called The Den, with a board room style table, desks, and a Smart TV with access to Netflix.
•
At the Parkland Campus, there is also a Student Lounge that houses comfortable seating, a kitchen, and a television to help you unwind between classes.
The Students’ Association provides each campus with microwaves for students that wish to bring their own meals to campus. If you notice a microwave is not working, please let us know as soon as possible so we can have it fixed or replaced. Amenities in student spaces are subject to change due to the ACCSA’s COVID-19 Response. All concerns about equipment and furniture should be brought to our attention at accsa@assiniboine.net. 2021 - 2022 Day Planner

Students’ Association Services Student Advocacy Services Sometimes, students may find themselves in a tough situation. Maybe they were allegedly found plagiarizing an assignment. Maybe they are being bullied or harassed in their classes. Maybe they’re in danger of dropping out of school. These issues happen, and it’s important that students are aware of their rights and responsibilities while studying at Assiniboine. For this reason, the ACCSA has Advocacy Services to help students out when they need it most. Confidentiality When a student is speaking with an Advocate, confidentiality is important. That’s why advocates make sure students know that conversations with them won’t be shared with any College staff member. That way student’s aren’t worried about their information being shared with their instructor, chairperson, or dean. The only way this information can be shared is with the written consent of the student, or if the student present during a meeting consents to their information being disclosed to both parties. The only exception to this rule is if a student is exhibiting signs that they may be a threat to themselves or to others, the proper authorities will be contacted. Academic & Disciplinary Appeals At ACC, a student has the right to appeal any academic and disciplinary decision that they believe is unfair, unreasonable or arbitrary. This includes disciplinary decisions and consequences, grades, academic suspension and other decisions that impact on a student’s continuation in their program of studies. ACCSA Advocacy Services can assist students with reading and understanding the various policies that relate to their unique situation, and provide guidance to make sure that students don’t miss any steps along the way through an appeal procedure. Advocates can also review any appeal submission documentation, to make sure that it is concise, to the point, and most of all, relevant to your case. Representation at Meetings and Hearings Nervous about a particular meeting you have coming up with your instructor, chairperson, or dean? With enough advance notice, you can request the presence of an ACCSA Advocate to sit in on the meeting with you. The advocate can take notes during the meeting, and answer any of the student’s questions about the process. Prior to a meeting, the Advocate can also meet with a student to go over the situation, and help them prepare for the meeting. Advocates won’t speak for a student, but will gladly assist/coach any student so they know how to speak for themselves. And More! ACCSA Advocacy Services is always looking for ways to make it easier for students to succeed at Assiniboine, and doesn’t just stop at academic appeals. Advocates can assist with conflict resolution, document review, referals to other resources… and just about anything else you can think of that you might need! The ultimate goal of Advocacy Services is to empower students and ensure their success, and that is done many different ways. If you think you need some help, but aren't quite sure what you need, come see us anyway and an Advocate will be happy to help you. For Advocacy Assistance If you think you may benefit from speaking with an ACCSA Advocate, please visit the ACCSA office at room 413, 1430 Victoria Ave East, or email our Advocates at accsa.advocate@assiniboine.net to set up an appointment. 2021 - 2022 Day Planner
