All recesses must be explored and all damaged tissue must

be removed. The joint must be thoroughly irrigated with normal saline

(pulse lavage and 6 to 9 L is recommended). Internal fixation is contraindicated with the exception of

large articular fragments that may be stabilized with Kirscher wire (K-wire) or Steinmann pins.
