Icons Portraits by Andy Gotts Andy Gotts, Foreword by Stephen Fry In 1990 Andy Gotts, then a young photography student at Norfolk College of Arts and Technology, approached Stephen Fry at an event to ask him for a portrait. That brief meeting led to an even briefer photographic session (90 seconds), during which Andy realised he had discovered his photographic approach: “I cannot remember what I said to provoke the expressions and reactions I had in these 10 frames, but that was it... BOOM! ... my eureka moment”. Some 30 years later, Andy’s unique portrait style – rapidly taken and often face-on – is admired for capturing the charisma of famed sitters such as Kylie Minogue, Meryl Streep, Harrison Ford and Kirk Douglas. Andy’s chatty, quick-fire approach led Paul Newman to nickname him ‘One Shot Gotts’. Andy Gotts was awarded an MBE in 2012 for his contribution to photography. This publication accompanies an exhibition at Sebastian Gallery, Mayfair, opening March 2021. 9781785513718 Scala Arts & Heritage Publishers Ltd. 295 x 245mm. 240pp., 215 col., 106 b.&w. Michael Caine Photographed by Terry O’Neill James Clarke “I had to be an actor,” Michael Caine once said. “[…] And of course, you have to remember with me, the alternative was a factory.” A workingclass actor who broke through to stardom, Caine’s screen-time involves standout performances across multiple genres. To this day, he is synonymous with a certain kind of urbane cool. No camera has captured this quality over the decades better than that of his collaborator and longtime friend, Terry O’Neill. Michael Caine: Photographed by Terry O’Neill offers an immersive visual journey through Michael Caine’s career, immortalising Caine’s charm both in and out of character. Caine occupies a landmark position in cinema and O’Neill was there from the early days of his stellar career. From the comedy of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels to the European drama of Seven Times A Woman; from the miasma of The Magus to the British cult classic Get Carter, this book combines black and white and colour images and includes neverbefore-seen contact sheets. Featuring the following films: Mona Lisa, Midnight in Saint Petersburg / Bullet to Beijing, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Blue Ice, Without a Clue, Get Carter, Deadfall, Magus, Woman Times Seven, Funeral in Berlin.

Over the decades, no camera has captured Caine better than that of his collaborator and long-time friend, Terry O’Neill.

Sukita Eternity Sukita For Sukita, the creative mastermind behind David Bowie’s cover for Heroes, photography is an expression of a ‘fundamental secret’ shared between artists: a spiritual communication that transcends the minutiae of language. Born and raised in Kyushu, Japan, Sukita’s reverence of American counterculture lured him to New York and London. He immersed himself in the western music scene which he loved, while his relaxed sessions endeared him to many celebrity figures, including David Bowie (with whom he enjoyed a 40-year professional relationship), Iggy Pop, Marc Bolan, and Japanese musician Hotei, best known for his work on the Kill Bill soundtrack. This is the first time the photographer has collaborated on a major retrospective of his career. It introduces the artist through a series of biographical essays that explore his place within the wider context of both Western and Japanese photography, presented alongside the iconic shots that earned him his eternal reputation. Also available will be a limited edition of 200 copies, slipcased, each individually signed by Sukita and each with a signed print.

A full retrospective of Sukita’s greatest images including, early work, fashion photography, musician and celebrity portraits.

Richmond Park London’s Wildlife Haven Photography by Alex Saberi, Text by John Karter Sir David Attenborough has described Richmond Park as “A very special place” - and with good reason. This vast oasis of green, just eight miles from the centre of London, is an ecological pearl in the midst of sprawling urbanisation. In this beautiful book, Alex Saberi captures Richmond Park’s unique blend of rare and diverse wildlife, plant life and rolling landscapes. From a crow perching on a bench in the morning haze to a foolhardy Labrador, breaking impatiently away from its owner, the photographs capture its inherent beauty as well as those rare moments of wildlife action and majesty that only yield themselves to the most patient and knowledgeable of observers.

When Elephants Come to Town A Visual Anthology James Attlee When Elephants Come to Town is a visual celebration of man’s timeless fascination with the world’s largest land animal through the medium of photography. Rather than a series of contemporary nature photographs, the book is a collection of exceptional images from around the world of elephants in captivity, dating from Victorian times to the height of circus culture in the mid-20th century, many of them taken by anonymous photographers. In the essay that accompanies the photographs, acclaimed British author James Attlee describes the broader context of that relationship through the ages. Intensely nostalgic, often poignant and always fascinating, these images capture the complexity of one of the planet’s most enduring inter-species relationships.

“Through this extraordinary selection of photographs and accompanying text, we follow elephants on their journey from Ancient Rome to Coney Island and beyond. Steam Rally Robin Grierson Robin Grierson Steam Rally consists of 50 high quality colour photographs that explore steam rallies in England over the past 30 years. The images record the engine men, their restored traction engines, and the lively steam heritage scene, which draws thousands to its events around the country every summer. Having grown up around his father’s bus garage in County Durham and spent much of his formative years tinkering with engines, Grierson found himself instinctively drawn to the steam people and their beloved vintage machines. This collection of thoughtfully composed images, include respectful portraits, close up details of people and their machines, and wider views of the steam rally within the rural landscape. Grierson pays particular attention to the work-worn textures, stained surfaces, and subtle colours of the working steam environment

Olivo Barbieri Early Works 1980-1984 Corrado Benigni This volume complies the photographs taken by Olivo Barbieri in the early 1980s. These shots of everyday life are examples of all the elements Barbieri would go on to develop in the following decades: the artificial lighting in contemporary cities, views from above, home interiors and bars, the signs left by man in the landscape. Barbieri’s images scratch the surface of the banal, they open up a new way of looking at space and instill doubt in the observer: do we actually see reality?

David Bowie by Sukita Masayoshi Sukita With shimmering outfits, poetic texts and energetic performances David Bowie delighted millions of fans. As Ziggy Stardust, Major Tom or Thin White Duke he proved his innovative power and eagerness to experiment. During their 40-year cooperation Masayoshi Sukita captured the essence of Bowie. The best of them were chosen for this book and topped off with informative texts. Sukita’s work mirrors the artist’s eventful life as well as eventful times. Through his camera he looks at manipulative strategies of selfpresentation, of creating fictional characters, that commenced in the ‘70’s art and music and were brought to perfection by David Bowie. A kaleidoscope of timeless portraits, far from the usual rock star snapshots!

Insights into 19 Ateliers Photography by Sibylle Mania Frank Motz Sibylle Mania’s Insights into 19 Ateliers are more than just a chronicle of studios and workshops – they are windows into the world of creative processes. Yet in these analogue black-and-white photographs, the artists themselves remain hidden. Within the intimate interiors, secretive chaos merges with productive efficiency. It is this interplay that fully draws the viewer into the world of painters, sculptors, ceramicists, photographers, metalworkers, and graphic artists. Sibylle Mania takes a step back as photographer and, in her meticulously selected details of the untouched workshops, leaves us with the impression of being immersed in a place where inspiration can turn into creation at any moment.

Behind the Camera American Women Photographers Who Shaped How We See the World Maria Ausherman Every day millions of people around the world use cell phones to document their daily lives. But what if, in order to create a photograph, you needed 20-40 kilos of equipment? What if the people whose pictures you wanted to capture had to sit for long stretches without moving? And what if travelling around to document historical events was considered ‘man’s work’? These were the conditions for making high-quality photographs from the time the camera was invented in 1839, well into the 20th century. All of the women in this book were pioneers in extending the scope of making photographs, whether as an art form, a tool for recording, or as a commercial resource. Some were better known for portraiture; others for documenting poverty and hardship, the horrors of war, or the lives of marginal people.

In March 2014, Vladimir Putin signed an agreement that declared Crimea to be a part of the Russian Federation. The photographer Moritz Küstner spent five years, from 2015 to 2019, documenting the changes affecting Crimea and the lives of the Crimean Tartars.

In 2017, Marvin Böhm’s mother was diagnosed with cancer. From then on, he began to capture his private life with a camera. He had little interest in chronicling her suffering and illness: Böhm’s main goal was to ‘carry on’ and continue into the future.

Carlo Valsecchi Posterius Carlo Valsecchi, William A. Ewing

Olive Trees Jacques Berthet Jacques Berthet

The ethereal, alienating and attractive images shot by Carlo Valsecchi, master of architectural photography, inside the construction site of the Philip Morris factory. Valsecchi presents images of ethereal, abstract spaces that border on the surreal, managing to bring out the mystery inherent in them.

Andy Senn De aedibus Edited by Heinz Wirz

Martin and Sven Fröhlich have passionately pursued the permanence and longevity of forms, images and narratives in architecture since 2000. The result is surprising, strong and memorable architecture that often appears close to conceptual and minimal art.

Following his studies at the Accademia di Architettura in Mendrisio and various internships, Andreas Heierle founded his Atelier für Architektur in Lucerne in 2012. Since then, he has produced a number of architectural gems.

The new agricultural school in Salez, in the St. Gallen Rhine valley region, has a slender, airy and light appearance. The design is by Andy Senn, who has led his architectural office in St. Gallen since 1998.

Spillmann Echsle De aedibus Edited by Heinz Wirz

Staehelin Meyer Anthologie Edited by Heinz Wirz

Lara and Yves Reinacher are the protagonists of this Zurich architectural office. Following numerous competition successes, the architects have built several housing developments and a school in the community of Haut-Vully, Canton of Fribourg.

Spillmann Echsle became renowned in 2006 with their container tower for the FREITAG fashion label in Zurich. It represents ‘architecture without architects’ while also being a nonchalant solution for a common architectural programme during an inhospitable residual zone.

Jonas Staehelin and Stephan Meyer are among a promising young generation of architects in Basel. Their conversions and housing have their own hallmark, and their designs are characterised by particular elegance and dignity.

Mothmeister: Dark and Dystopian Post-Mortem Fairy Tales Mothmeister In Dark & Dystopian Post-Mortem Fairy Tales, Mothmeister pays homage to the muses who have sparked their alienating dream world. From artists worldwide, legendary figures, their collection of taxidermy to lurid places where their figures were born, such as the catacombs of Palermo, Pyramiden or the disaster area around Chernobyl. A special fairy tale world that flirts with the morbid, religious and grotesque and in which stuffed animals are brought back to life in an extraordinary way.

In their second book, Belgian artistic duo Mothmeister brings together their signature mixture of creepy masks, unearthly taxidermy, and fascinating photography with cinematic effect.

Francis Bacon Man and Beast Michael Peppiatt, Stephen F. Eisenman, Catherine Howe, Anna Testar, Isabella Boorman Francis Bacon is considered one of the most important painters of the 20th century. A major exhibition of his paintings at the Royal Academy of Arts in 2020 explores the role of animals in his work – not least the human animal. Having often painted dogs and horses, in 1969 Bacon first depicted bullfights. Twenty-two years later, a lone bull was to be the subject of his final painting. In this fascinating publication – a significant addition to the literature on Bacon – expert authors discuss Bacon’s approach to animals and identify his varied sources of inspiration, which included wildlife photography and the motion studies of Eadweard Muybridge. They contend that, by considering animals in states of vulnerability, anger and unease, Bacon was able to lay bare the role of instinctual behaviour in the human condition.

A major study of Francis Bacon’s paintings of animals, to accompany an exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, 30 January to 18 April 2021.

Frank Bowling Updated and expanded edition Mel Gooding Over the past decade, Frank Bowling has enjoyed belated attention and celebration. This comprehensive monograph, published in 2011, is now available in an updated and expanded edition. Born in British Guiana in 1934, Bowling arrived in England in his late teens, going on to study at the Royal College of Art alongside David Hockney and Derek Boshier. By the early 1960s he was recognised as an original force in the vibrant London art scene. Dividing his time between New York and London since the late 1960s, he has developed a unique and virtuosic abstract style that combines aspects of American painterly abstraction with a treatment of light and space that consciously recollects the great English landscape painters Gainsborough, Turner and Constable. In a compelling text the art writer, critic and curator Mel Gooding hails Bowling as one of the finest British artists of his generation. 9781912520602 Royal Academy of Arts 280 x 240 mm. 192pp., 140 col. David Hockney The Arrival of Spring, Normandy, 2020 David Hockney, William Boyd, Edith Devaney At the beginning of 2020, just as global Covid-19 restrictions were coming into force, the artist David Hockney was at his house, studio and garden in Normandy. From there, he witnessed the arrival of spring, and recorded the blossoming of the surrounding landscape on his iPad, a method of drawing he has been using for over a decade. Drawing outdoors was an antidote to the anxiety of the moment for Hockney – ‘We need art, and I do think it can relieve stress,’ he says. This uplifting publication – produced to accompany a major exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts – includes 116 of his new iPad drawings and shows to full effect Hockney’s singular skill in capturing the exuberance of nature.

Washi Transformed New Expressions in Japanese Paper Meher McArthur, Hollis Goodall, Zachary Marschall Historically, washi paper has been used as a base for Japanese calligraphy, painting, and printmaking as well as a material in architecture, religious ritual and clothing. In recent years, contemporary Japanese artists have turned this supple yet sturdy paper into a medium for expressing their artistic vision – layering, weaving, dyeing, shredding, folding, or cutting the paper to form abstract sculptures, lyrical folding screens, highly textured wall pieces, and dramatic installations. This elegantly designed volume examines the extraordinary creations of these diverse contemporary artists from Japan, France, and the United States. The publication also demonstrates the resilience, versatility, and unique stature of this ancient artistic medium in the realm of international contemporary art.

This exquisite new publication celebrates how Japanese contemporary artists push traditional washi paper beyond its historic uses to create innovative, highly textured two-dimensional works, expressive sculptures, and dramatic installations.

Shepard Fairey 3 Decades of Dissent Shepard Fairey, Maria Vittoria, Marini Clarelli, Claudio Crescentini, and Federica Pirani The volume is dedicated to Shepard Fairey (Charleston, 1970), one of the best-known urban art artists in the world. Established under the pseudonym of OBEY thanks to a successful campaign of stickers spread in a viral way, depicting the face of wrestling champion André The Giant, the American artist has achieved international visibility thanks to the portrait of Obama, immortalised in the iconic 2008 ‘Hope’ poster for his presidential campaign. In these pages the artist presents 30 recent unpublished graphic works (2019), which retrace 30 years of activity through his most famous icons: many social and political themes that inspired his production, from the struggle for peace and against racial violence, the defence of human and gender dignity up to environment protection. The graphics constitute a unique and unrepeatable concept, designed specifically for the Gallery of Modern Art in Rome, where they are put in dialogue with important works from the contemporary art collection of the Capitoline Superintendence, selected by the artist himself. The volume, with a contribution by Shepard Fairey and numerous critical texts, is completed by a biography and bibliographical apparatus.

Formerly known under the pseudonym OBEY, Shepard Fairey became one of the most famous urban artists in the world. The volume retraces the first 30 years of his career.

Anna Nero All things considered Edited by Galerie Schierke Seinece, Frankfurt am Main, text by Mirna Funk, Philipp Schreiner, and Dmitrij Kapitelman When do painterly gestures become objects or spaces? When the colours and lines in a picture become the subject, do they then flirt with or repel one another? Fascinated by the gaudy banality of day-to-day life, Anna Nero (b. 1988) scratches on the surface of things with the help of quotes from advertising, fashion, and comics as well as samples of abstract and concrete painting. The question of the ‘thingness’ of a picture as a painterly image or real ceramic object, the question of its material characteristics, its use, its ‘essence’ is central to her work and also the focus of her first monograph.

A Sameness Between Us The Friendship of Charmion von Wiegand and Piet Mondrian in Letters and Memoirs Martin Brauen In April 1941 Charmion von Wiegand (1896-1983), an American journalist and artist, met Piet Mondrian for an interview. From this very first meeting, a deep friendship and working relationship developed; she translated Mondrian’s texts into English and edited them, discussed art and philosophy with him, and played a part in the evolution of many of the works he created up to his death in 1944. The artist’s memoirs of their encounters and their comprehensive correspondence have now been published in full for the very first time. The texts portray a relationship fluctuating between burning affection and distant friendship, tenderness and harsh rejection, openness and reticence. A relationship that has left behind clear traces in Charmion von Wiegand’s life and works - far beyond Mondrian’s death.

Thorvald Hellesen 1888-1937 Dag Blakkisrud, Matthew Drutt, Hilde Mørch Thorvald Hellesen (1888-1937) was a Norwegian avant-garde artist who lived and worked in Paris in the 1910s and 1920s. He and his wife, the French artist Hélène Perdriat, were part of a circle of artists that included Pablo Picasso, Fernand Léger, Constantin Brâncusi, Piet Mondrian, Theo van Doesburg, and many others. In his short yet intense life, Thorvald Hellesen created an impressive unique oeuvre, oriented on Modernism, consisting of oil paintings, watercolours, gouaches, drawings, design projects, and textiles. With this publication the authors Dag Blakkisrud, Matthew Drutt, and Hilde Mørch have created a written portrait of Hellesen. In addition to classifying him within the history of art, they try to find explanations as to why his artistic practice is only now being considered important and interesting for Norwegian and international art history. 9783897905948 Arnoldsche Art Publishers 280 x 240mm. 272pp., 280 col. Abstraction and Calligraphy Towards a Universal Language Didier Ottinger and Marie Sarré The Louvre Abu Dhabi’s exciting exhibition programme explores the enduring dialogue between Eastern and Western artistic expression. Abstraction and Calligraphy brings together a rich array of works, from 10th-century ceramics from Samarkand to paintings and drawings by Kandinsky, Matisse, Miró, Twombly and other modern masters. The ways in which these artists respond to Eastern calligraphic traditions enriches our understanding of the dynamic between modern art in the West and longestablished forms from Asia and the Near East.

This catalogue accompanies the latest in the Louvre Abu Dhabi’s exciting series of exhibitions charting the relationship between Eastern and Western artistic traditions.

An Instinct to Draw John Ruskin’s Drawings in the Ashmolean Museum Stephen Wildman John Ruskin assembled 1470 diverse works of art for use in the Drawing School he founded at Oxford in 1871. They included drawings by himself and other artists, prints and photographs. This book focuses on highlights of works produced by Ruskin himself. Ruskin’s life is one of the best documented of any in the 19th century, through letters, diaries and the many autobiographical revelations in his published writings: this allows the opportunity to give almost any drawing a level of context impossible for any other artist. When there is so much background information, a single drawing reveals much about its creator, and becomes a window into the great sprawling edifice of his life and work.

The Works of Samuel Palmer Colin Harrison The art of Samuel Palmer is essentially a discovery of the 20th century. Although he exhibited widely during his lifetime, and found buyers for some of his watercolours and etchings, it was not until the retrospective exhibition held at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1926 that the general public were able to enter the uniquely personal world of Palmer’s early years at Shoreham. The collection of paintings, drawings, watercolours, and etchings by Samuel Palmer in the Ashmolean Museum is the most important in the world. It is especially rich in the early works of the Shoreham period, from c. 1824 to 1835, notably the haunting self-portrait and the unique group of six sepia drawings of 1825, which represent the ‘visionary landscape’ at its most intense.

Pre-Raphaelite Drawings and Watercolours Christiana Payne, with contributions by Fiona Mann and Robert Wilkes Oxford has a special place in the history of Pre-Raphaelitism. Thomas Combe (superintendent of the Clarendon Press) encouraged John Everett Millais and William Holman Hunt at a crucial early stage of their careers, and his collection became the nucleus of the Ashmolean collection of works by the Brotherhood and their associates. The collection of watercolours and drawings includes a wide variety of appealing works, from Hunt’s first drawing on the back of a tiny envelope for The Light of the World (Keble College), to large, elaborate chalk drawings of Jane Morris by Rossetti. It is especially rich in portraits, which throw an intimate light on the friendships and love affairs of the artists, and in landscapes which reflect Ruskin’s advice to ‘go to nature’. More than just an exhibition catalogue, this book is a showcase of the Ashmolean’s incredible collection, and demonstrates the enormous range of PreRaphaelite drawing techniques and media, including pencil, pen and ink, chalk, watercolour, bodycolour and metallic paints. It will include designs for stained glass and furniture, as well as preparatory drawings for some of the well-known paintings in the collection.

Accompanies an exhibition at the Ashmolean, 4 February to 31 May, which focusses on the Ashmolean’s rarely seen reserve collection of PreRaphaelite drawings and watercolours.

The Art of Botanical Illustration Wilfrid Blunt and William T. Stearn This major work, first published in 1950, is still considered the classic book on the subject. It provides a comprehensive, critical and well-illustrated survey of the portrayal of plants across over three thousand years, at a more compact size. Of the first edition, the poet and gardening writer, Vita Sackville-West said: “Let no one think this is a book only for the specialist. It is essential for the specialist, certainly, but it is also for all the flower-lovers and all those who enjoy the by-ways of biography and the added attraction of good writing”. This edition contains 126 colour plates (more than twice as many as the first edition), alongside 140 black-and-white illustrations. It invites the reader to appreciate the works of the greatest botanical illustrators both past and present. With a new introduction by Martyn Rix, editor of Curtis’s Botanical Magazine at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

The Origins of the World Invention of nature at the time of Darwin Laura Bossi The 19th century saw an unprecedented development of the natural sciences. Darwinian theory questions the origins of man, his place in Nature, his links with animals and his own animality in a world now understood as an ecosystem. This upheaval in the sciences, as well as the public debates throughout the century, deeply influenced the artists. The Musée d’Orsay and the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Montréal are devoting an exhibition to the intersection of science and the arts for the first time, in partnership with the National Museum of Natural History in Paris, which will retrace the themes of this questioning and will confront the main milestones of scientific discoveries with their parallel in the art.

Otto Fried Heaven Can Wait / Heaven Can’t Wait Edited by Beate Reifenscheid

Svenja Deininger Two Thoughts Various authors

This book offers an overview of German artist Otto Fried’s career: works from the early days (1950s), which are presented with a few oil paintings and almost cubist-like drawings, form the foundation of an almost exclusively abstract visual language that the artist developed later.

This volume documents the artistic project conceived by the painter Svenja Deininger (Vienna, 1974) for the Maramotti Collection of Reggio Emilia. It is a cycle of pictorial works inspired by the work of Polish artist Wladyslaw Strzeminski, protagonist of the historical avantgarde of the 1920s.

The Age of Combustion Notes on Automobile Design Stephen Bayley The automobile is the ultimate analogue machine and mankind’s most ingenious, seductive and damaging invention. For over a century, cars have provided reference points for our notions of style, status and desire. In design terms, the Age of Combustion was as rich and varied as architecture’s Baroque – and far more popular. And now it is coming to an end, as the internalcombustion engine is superseded by the battery and cars become wheeled computers, running on AI not oil. Together with a wide-ranging introduction, this book reproduces 60 of Stephen Bayley’s popular monthly columns for Octane, the outstanding classic car magazine where, for more than 10 years, he has provided the most consistent and insightful commentary on car culture, often based on privileged access to industry insiders.

Modern British Jewellery Designers A Collector’s Guide Mary Ann Wingfield, with a foreword by Lord Snowdon In the 1960s, British jewellery underwent a revolution. Natural, uncut stones exploded into vogue and a 1961 exhibition at the Goldsmith’s Hall kickstarted the nation’s new obsession with gold. The women who shopped at Quant’s Bazaar and Hulaniki’s Biba no longer just received jewellery as gifts. They placed their own orders, exploring Grima’s drizzled gold and Flockinger’s fused metallic experimentations; John Donald’s textured gold cubes and the House of Munsteiner’s curious new gem cuts. This was an era of innovation – captured here through insights into the work of 25 major jewellers and sumptuous pictures of their work. This book introduces the most influential British designers, jewellers, goldsmiths and silversmiths of 1960-1980. Tracing the evolution of style across these decades, Modern British Jewellery Designers reveals the designers’ inspirations and the identifying signatures of their work. Accompanied by new photography showing each designer’s creations, this is the perfect introduction for anyone with an interest in collecting, or learning more about this transformative period in British jewellery design.

The illustrated work and biographies of 25 key British jewellers, including Stuart Devlin, Elizabeth Gage, Joseph Kutchinsky and Gerda Flöckinger, focussing on an era that changed the direction of British jewellery design and placed British designers on the global stage.

His awards alone speak to his prowess: the Prince Philip Designers’ Prize (2002) and the title of RDI (Royal Designer of Industry, 1987) among them. Part biography, part showcase for some of McConnell’s most celebrated designs, this book gathers McConnell’s exclusive redesign for Faber & Faber.

Joe Colombo Catalogue Raisonné 1962-2020 Edited by Ignazia Favata and Domitilla Dardi Joe Colombo (Milan, 1930-1971) was one of the greatest designers of the last century, visionary and ingenious, capable of giving shape to ideas that retain a striking relevance to this day. Trained first at the Brera Academy and then at the Polytechnic of Milan, Joe Colombo has expressed an absolutely innovative world view. A design in the round, aimed at satisfying every need, shaping the space and its objects according to the different activities of the moment. Colombo created modular and dynamic furnishing accessories with futuristic lines, some of which have become icons of Italian design such as the Tube Chair, the Spider lamp (Compasso d’Oro 1967) or the Boby trolley; the “monoblocks”, such as the Mini-Kitchen or the Total Table with integrated dishes, up to the global housing unit, a visionary “machine”, which encompasses all the needs of living. This volume constitutes the first catalogue raisonné of his work, of which about 180 projects are documented, divided between works still in production and historical works.

The first catalogue raisonné on Joe Colombo, visionary and brilliant designer of the 20th century. Includes 180 works among historical pieces and those still in production.

Crusaders of Art and Design 1920-1970 Ruth Artmonsky Crusaders for art and design were men and women who were prepared to give their energy, talents, and ofttimes money, to encourage young artists and designers to adventure in their chosen fields. Many of these crusaders have largely been forgotten, such as John Gloag, who supported the cause. Other Crusaders are remembered but for other reasons, such as Pevsner, the surveyor of British architectural heritage who for some years had been seen as the guru of industrial design. Whilst in the ‘fine’ arts Anton Zwemmer, whose Covent Garden shop is now a hairdresser, has largely been erased from memory. Crusaders of Art and Design aims to restore a number of reputations by recording their contributions to the cause.

Sellers of Dreams Fifty years of the advertising of beauty products 1920-1970 Ruth Artmonsky From the latter part of the 19th century there was a fever of experiment resulting in the development of what were to become brand-named beauty products. Some manufacturers were generally interested in producing ‘healthy’ products that could beautify without harming; others were chancers climbing on the band wagon. Advertising for beauty products moved with social trends from flapper girl to Carnaby Street Twiggy lookalikes. Gullible consumers were offered solutions to achieving their dreams - to look forever young, to attract attention, to land Mr. or Mrs. Right. Sellers of Dreams charts the advertiser’s skills in promising dreams would come true.

Blue Tailoring Edited by Stefano Chiassai Denim is a symbol of cultural globalisation. Democratic, versatile, resistant to the passing of time and to changing tastes and styles, it embodies rebellion and standardisation at the same time. Stefano Chassai, an established designer on the international scene, searches for new variations of the iconic blue fabric in the sphere of men’s wardrobe: mixed with other materials and ennobled with unusual techniques, between craftsmanship and new technologies, denim leaves the casual universe to enter the field of tailoring, as the raw material for a new concept of elegance. The result is Blue Tailoring, the story of an ideal collection, a creative laboratory and a manifesto of the stylist’s poetics.

Lace Looking Through Flemish Lace Kaat Debo, Frieda Sorber, Tessy Schoenholzer, and Ina van den Berghe Lace has been a luxury item, sought after by royalty and the aristocracy, since the early 1600s. Fashion has traditionally driven lace production, and in the 17th and 18th centuries the lace trade was a significant contributor to the economies of many European countries. This exhibition catalogue for a show at MoMu, the Antwerp fashion museum, focuses on the venerable tradition of lace-making in Flanders, but places it within the larger context of the history of lace from the 16th century to the present. Historic pieces from international museums, including the Met (New York), the V&A (London) and the Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam) are complemented by contemporary fashion (Van Herpen, Dior, Alaia, Prada, Loewe, Givenchy). These pieces, and their cutting-edge production techniques, bring the history of Flemish-made lace up to the 21st century. 9789401474337 Lannoo Publishers 330 x 220mm. 256pp., 200 col., 75 b.&w. The Cocktail Seminars Brian D. Hoefling As a senior at Yale, Brian Hoefling realised that his classmates were about to enter the real world with an imperfect knowledge of how to order, prepare, and enjoy cocktails. To remedy this dangerous deficiency, he devised and taught The Cocktail Seminars. In his subsequent career as a cocktail teacher and writer, Hoefling has developed and refined The Cocktail Seminars into the present book. Each of the five seminars herein (from beginner to advanced) covers 30 different drinks, which are arranged so as to progressively introduce the ingredients of mixology, as well as its history and its core principles – souring, bittering, sweetening, aromatising, drying, lengthening, and mouthfeel. The Cocktail Seminars is handsomely bound in vegan leather and furnished with all the charts and photographs one would expect from a proper textbook.

New York A Photographic Journey Jacqueline Goossens and Tom Ronse It is often said that you can’t take the same walk twice in New York. Its history may be short compared to that of European cities, but it is also a history marked by lightning-fast change. This pictorial journey into the history of New York City starts from the small town that began as New Amsterdam in the 17th century, tracing the unbridled expansion of the 18th century and waves of mass immigration of the 19th and 20th centuries. The authors, both experienced NYC tour guides, explore iconic districts like Times Square, Harlem, Wall Street, Central Park, Ellis Island and the Bronx, bringing the past and people to life through engaging stories and images. An inspired selection of archival photos, prints, vintage maps, stereographs, and ephemera make this publication, with its elegant, gilt-edged finish, a fascinating visual homage to the vibrant city that is New York today.

In Praise of Hands Woodcuts by Naoko Matsubara With Poems by Penny Boxall Clare Pollard This creative collaboration between artist Naoko Matsubara and poet Penny Boxall celebrates in words and colours the beauty and variety of the human hand. The series of dynamic woodcuts at the heart of this book was initially inspired by the artist’s wonder at the busy hand movements of her baby son and grew into a wider celebration of hands in all their extraordinary variety – hands engaged in music, sport, prayer, or creative acts. The woodcuts convey a sense of joy and energy, whether exploring the symbolism of gestures, playing with form and colour, or expressing a mood or emotion. Penny Boxall’s new poems were specially written to accompany the woodcuts.
