Francis Bacon Or The Measure of Excess Yves Peyré An intimate insight into the life and work of Francis Bacon, written by Yves Peyré, a close friend of the artist. This comprehensive monograph details Bacon’s artistic journey, from his early design work in the 1920s to his disturbing, emotive triptychs of the 1980s. Tormented, twisted, and jarringly dissonant, Bacon’s divided vision of the world swung between civilization and barbarism, beauty and ugliness, life and death. His study of classical culture and western mythology led him to depict darkly sublime worlds of violence and madness that intrigue as much as they evoke visceral disgust. This monograph begins with a biography, relating the life of Francis Bacon, his stories and inspirations; before delving into a sharp analysis of his work. Peyré’s personal connection with Bacon makes Francis Bacon a detailed and touching story, inviting the reader on a philosophical, poetic and artistic stroll through the artist’s mind. Authorized by the Francis Bacon Foundation.

An intimate insight into the life and work of Francis Bacon, written by a close friend of the artist. Beautifully illustrated with an exceptional collection of images.

Loving A Photographic History of Men in Love Hugh Nini and Neal Treadwell This extraordinary book portrays the history of romantic love between men in hundreds of moving and tender vernacular photographs. Taken over a century, at a time when male partnerships were often illegal, these images narrate a story of astonishing joy, the universal story of what love looks like. Gathered over 20 years, the collection includes photos from all over the world, each a celebration of two people in love, given away by an unmistakable look in their eyes, or by body language as subtle as one hand grazing another. In ambrotypes, daguerreotypes, glass negatives, tin types, cabinet cards, photo postcards, photo strips, and snapshots, the book also covers a century of social history and the development of photography. Native Texans, collectors Hugh Nini and Neal Treadwell live and work in New York City.

Remembering Great Apes Margot Raggett / Wildlife Photographers United

“The question is, are we happy to suppose that our grandchildren may never be able to see an elephant except in a picture book?” Sir David Attenborough With an emphatic no to Sir David’s question, this book raises both awareness and funds to fight the plight that elephants are facing.

The ‘great apes’ - bonobos, chimpanzees, gorillas and orangutans, are our closest cousins. And yet we humans seem callously able to turn a blind eye to their destruction. This book is a celebration of the beauty of these species and a cry from those who photograph and love them that things need to change, before it is too late.

Remembering Lions Margot Raggett / Wildlife Photographers United

Remembering Rhinos Margot Raggett / Wildlife Photographers United

Wild lions are now just found in sub-Saharan Africa and a small pocket in India, with only around 20,000 left. Featuring images generously donated by many of the world’s top wildlife photographers – including six overall winners of Wildlife Photographer of the Year – this book aims to draw attention to the slaughter of one of the most celebrated of all animals.

Remembering Rhinos is the second book in the Remembering Wildlife charity series. Rhinos, whose horns, made of useless keratin, are worth their weight in gold on the black market, are being poached towards extinction. This book turns its attention to yet another species under attack, unwilling to sit back impotently and see it disappear on our watch.

Beatlemania Four Photographers on the Fab Four Tony Barrell; Photographs by Norman Parkinson, Michael Ward, Terry O’Neill and Derek Bayes The Beatles ascended like no band before, hurtling to the dizzy heights of international stardom in the early 1960s. Their counter-cultural vibes and unmistakable talent are still the subject of much discussion today – as is the rabid devotion of their fans. But how did one pop group become, as Lennon infamously quipped, “more popular than Jesus”? The work of four photographers provides an enlightening insight into the band’s rise to fame. Ward captured the Fab Four when Beatlemania was still confined to their own home city – the band braved the icy Liverpool streets for a promotional shoot during the Big Freeze of ‘62-63. O’Neill crossed paths with The Beatles amid the buzz of the Swinging Sixties, resonating with the band in 1963 as a photographer of their generation. Parkinson delivered a deceptively relaxed shoot later that year, when the band were recording their second album; while Bayes captured never-before-published candid shots of The Beatles filming Help! in 1965. Accompanying these pictures, Tony Barrell’s text delves into the Beatlemania phenomenon – the good, the bad, the ugly and the odd. From the creation of their early hit records to the hails of confectionery that peppered stages after John claimed George had eaten his jelly babies, Beatlemania: Four Photographers on the Fab Four reveals how one band became a lasting sensation.

Dylan by Schatzberg Jerry Schatzberg In 1965, photographer Jerry Schatzberg, already well-established in the field due to his fashion and portrait photography for various publications, such as Vogue, Esquire and Life, listened to Bob Dylan for the first time. Shortly thereafter, Schatzberg was given an open invitation to the studio where Dylan was currently recording ‘Highway 61 Revisited’. Excited and curious, Schatzberg set off the very next day for the studio. Schatzberg received a warm welcome from the singer, who immediately sat him down to listen to what he had been recording that day. Dylan gave him free rein of the studio once he started shooting and the images that emerged from that day make obvious the comfortable and relaxed atmosphere that was already brewing between photographer and subject. That almost-instant trust and rapport quickly grew into a friendship and they are part of the reason Schatzberg’s sittings with Dylan work so successfully. Dylan is relaxed, he’s funny, he takes the props that the photographer gives him and has fun with them. Working and socializing together, Schatzberg would eventually do nine more photo shoots with Dylan from 1965-6, arguably the singer’s most creative period, and capture the (now) Nobel laureate during one of the most pivotal moments in music history.

A 21st Century Palace Asia Geoffrey Bradfield, Roric Tobin & Landry Design Group

About the House Works by McInturff Architects Mark McInturff. Photography by Julia Heine

For the latest in his 21st Century Palace series, acclaimed designer Geoffrey Bradfield teamed up with Richard Landry and the Landry Design Group to create a breath-taking tripartite mansion in Asia of some 250,000 square feet on 30 acres, housing over three dozen bedrooms. This lavishly illustrated volume shows how the Louis XIV-style chateau set in a ravishing landscape by Robert E. Truskowski is a masterful synthesis of East and West, where Bradfield infused his signature, elegant interiors with Eastern principles of feng shui.

Black in Rembrandt’s Time Elmer Kolfin & Epco Runia This exhibition catalog tells the story of the black community in 17th century Dutch society and reveals how attitudes to race were expressed in the portrayal of black figures in Dutch art. Black people were present in 17thcentury Holland, both in society and in art. Rembrandt and many of his contemporaries made magnificent works of art that depict people of color. There was a small community of around 80 free black people of color living in the Jodenbreestraat neighborhood of Amsterdam during Rembrandt’s lifetime. Painters during this period portrayed individual black models from life, and in a number of cases they formed the main subject of the art work. This book explores the conditions that gave rise to these remarkable works of art and the reasons the public image of black people changed from about 1660 onwards.

Cy Twombly Jonas Storsve The book focuses to a degree never before seen on Cy Twombly’s major cycles: Nine Discourses on Commodus (1963), Fifty Days at Iliam (1978), and Coronation of Sesostris (2000). The artist’s development as a whole is traced based on nearly 200 paintings, sculptures, drawings, and photographs. This thus provides unique insights into the overall intellectual and sensual richness of the oeuvre. From his early works at the beginning of the 1950s, which are characterized by the use of text, to his compositions of the 1960s, his reaction to the minimal art and conceptual art of the 1970s to his final paintings, the overview of the oeuvre underscores the significance of the series and cycles in which Cy Twombly invented history painting anew.

The Final Painting The Last Works of the Great Masters, From Van Eyck to Picasso Patrick De Rynck An intense focus on the late and final work of great painters has become a striking trend in recent years. Exhibitions have been devoted to ‘the Late’ Raphael, Tintoretto, Rembrandt, Goya, Turner, Manet, Gauguin, Monet, Matisse and Pollock and fresh research has been carried out into the work these artists produced in the twilight of their careers. This has led in many cases to surprising discoveries and a renewed appreciation of the late work. The Final Painting collects these fresh insights into 30 of the world’s greatest painters and their last works in a highly readable book, beginning with Jan van Eyck and ending with Pablo Picasso. Besides the painters mentioned already, it includes Bellini, Titian, Caravaggio, El Greco, Rubens, Artemisia Gentileschi, Cézanne, Klimt, Renoir, Modigliani, Munch, Mondrian, Kahlo and Hopper. Persistent myths and clichés are challenged: Van Gogh was not the solitary figure as so often suggested: the story behind Raphael’s celebrated La Fornarina was made up in the 19th century; the elderly Tintoretto did not paint many of his huge late canvases single-handedly; and Manet’s last works are much more than the paintings of a terminal patient.

James Howell Alistair Rider “My life is a big experiment. Anything that supports the direction my art is taking is an affirmation.” - James Howell. James Howell (1935-2014) painted in several styles over the course of his 52-year career, but he regarded as his greatest achievement a sequence of grey abstractions, begun in 1996, which he called Series 10. By any standards, Series 10 is an awe-inspiring body of work, comprising 381 paintings and 428 accompanying studies. This new monograph offers a detailed account of the development of Series 10 and places it in the context of Howell’s remarkable career.

Following Icons of Modern Art, The Shchukin Collection, Icons of Modern Art, The Morozov Collection is an incredible collection of paintings by French impressionists and modernists which had been nationalized following the 1917 Russian Revolution, then divided between the Hermitage in St. Petersburg and the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow. The collection includes many paintings by great masters such as Renoir, Picasso, Monet and Matisse, but also emerging artists of the Russian avant-garde. Shchukin and Morozov: Friends, peers, emulators or rivals, probably all of this. The Morozovs and Shchukin are ‘the two main families that dominated Moscow’s cultural life at the beginning of the 20th century, invented the concept of artistic philanthropy and directly contributed to the international recognition of French modern painters.’

Richard Jackson unexpected unexplained unaccepted Matthias Ulrich for the Schirn Kunsthalle Born in Sacramento in 1939, the artist Richard Jackson was one of the leading figures in the Californian art scene in the 1970s and 1980s. This book introduces a selection of his installations entitled Rooms, which feature cartoon-like figures – often dogs or ducks with human traits or plastic figures resembling Playmobil toys – spouting paint from their mouths or genitals. Significantly, Jackson does not involve spectators in the installation, but presents them with the final ‘painting’ like a sort of oversized tableau.

Susanna Bauer With a text by Valentina De Pasca This monograph on Susanna Bauer presents the artist’s work to an international audience for the first time in book form. The essential ingredients of Bauer’s artistic production are the ephemeral natural elements that she encounters during walks and hikes in Cornwall, UK, where she lives and works. They are leaves, stones, twigs… elements that become the heart of more elaborate creations rendered with crochet – sometimes used conventionally as a decoration, other times as a sculptural means of communication. The theme of the relationship between art and nature, and the ensuing interconnections, are investigated both through Bauer’s original work and in an introductory essay that analyzes her oeuvre within the broader context of the history of art.

Oita Japanese bamboo art from the Oita area Philippe Boudin and Zoé Niang Ōita Prefecture, and particularly the spa town of Beppu, has held a central position in the development and dissemination of the bamboo arts in Japan for over a century. This cottage industry was promoted by central government at the end of the Meiji era (1868-1912) as it looked for ways to export handicrafts for display at world’s fairs. Craftsmen were encouraged to produce high-quality pieces, some of their creations attaining the level of real artworks. Work by 12 contemporary bamboo artists from the region is now being introduced for the first time to a European audience at the Galerie Mingei, Paris, from 21 November to 21 December 2019. All the artworks are beautifully illustrated and a short biography is given for each artist.

It should find a place on every graphic designer’s desk.

We live in the age of the Anthropocene: human activity is the dominant force affecting the climate and man-made and organic materials are becoming irreversibly intertwined. As natural resources dwindle, designers are exploring the potential of increasingly plentiful waste streams to become the raw materials of the future.

* tat (noun) - anything that looks cheap, is of low quality, or in bad condition; junk, rubbish, debris, detritus, crap, shite.

Extraordinary Women Images of Courage, Endurance and Defiance Tom Stoddart. Foreword by Angelina Jolie Typical warzone coverage has two focuses. Throughout his career, award winning photographer Tom Stoddart has shown us the remarkable resilience of all sorts of people from across the world. With Extraordinary Women, he hones his focus on the female perspective. His photojournalistic approach travels through the recent decades, with images displaying courage and freedom, the working lives of everyday women and the front line of war. Each photo serves as a testament to the agency and strength of those who are so often portrayed as vulnerable and helpless. Tom Stoddart has built a reputation for compelling work, and this collection is especially remarkable for its uncompromising celebration of humanity.

Bond: Photographed by Terry O’Neill The Definitive Collection Terry O’Neill; edited by James Clarke Terry O’Neill was given his first chance to photograph Sean Connery as James Bond in the film Goldfinger. From that moment, O’Neill’s association with Bond was made. It was O’Neill who captured gritty and roguish pictures of Connery on set, and it was O’Neill who framed the super-suave Roger Moore in Live and Let Die. But it is Terry O’Neill’s casual, on-set photographs that show the other side of the world’s most recognizable spy. Terry O’Neill opens his archive to give readers – and viewers – the chance to enter the dazzling world of James Bond. Lavish images are complemented by insights from O’Neill, alongside a series of original essays on the world of James Bond by BAFTA-long-listed film writer, James Clarke; and newly-conducted interviews with a number of actors featured in O’Neill’s photographs.

Terry O’Neill’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Album Terry O’Neill Terry O’Neill photographed the giants of the music world – both on and off stage. For more than 50 years he captured those on the front line of fame in public and in private. David Bowie, Elton John, Led Zepplin, Amy Winehouse, Dean Martin, The Who, Janis Joplin, AC/DC, Eric Clapton, Sammy Davis Jnr., The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Chuck Berry and The Beatles – to name only a few. O’Neill spent more than 30 years photographing Frank Sinatra as his personal photographer with unprecedented access to the star. He took some of the earliest known photographs of The Beatles and then forged a lifetime relationship with members of the band that allowed him to photograph their weddings and other private moments. It is this contrast between public and private that makes Terry O’Neill’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Album such a powerful document.

Paris/NYC David Bacher, Carole Naggar David Bacher’s photography is a kind of treasure hunt, where viewers can discover and interpret Paris and New York in amusing, yet reflective, ways. Fifteen years ago, this American living in Paris and in Nantes decided to take mirror images of New York and Paris. In doing so, he realized that for him ‘Paris and New York are like two theater sets with thousands of actors without predefined roles’. His fluid gaze reflects the chaos of appearances without staging it. Bacher likes to create optical illusions. He jostles perspectives, giving reflections and shadows a presence as real as that of the bodies and faces which inhabit the theater of his work, the streets.

God Inc I & II Carl De Keyzer & Johan Braeckman In the summer of 1990, Magnum photographer Carl De Keyzer bought a camper van and spent a year traveling across the United States to capture the American religious experience. Published in 1992, the series was called God Inc. Thirty years later, he has revisited the American Bible Belt and various other states to see how religious groups embrace modern life and the latest technologies in their search for new followers. The result, God Inc. I & II, is a fascinating documentary of American life that bundles both series of photographs in a reversible format with two covers. The first part is supplemented with photographs that were not published before. “During the whole year, I asked myself why Americans undergo their religious experiences so intensively and emotionally.” - Carl De Keyzer, during the process of creating God Inc. I.

Circus Johanna-Maria Fritz “For Like a Bird I traveled to many Islamic countries. I was especially curious about the role of women in circus life and the environment the circus is based in thankfully I was able to get access to the female culture in conservative societies like Iran and Afghanistan as I am myself a woman. With my work I pursue the object of overcoming prejudices and show how small communities are able to function in these conservative or conflict-ridden countries. I direct a spectator’s view to different worlds: The one of the circus as well as the society surrounding it and how the social fabric of the circus influences the outside and gets influenced itself in reverse.”

Re-imagined photographs which have shifted through multiple purposes, responses and conditions. The River is Moving Gary Green “These photographs, made along a stream near my home in Waterville, Maine, began as meditations on nature: quiet observations of the water and what was reflected, refracted, and shadowed upon its surface. The title is a stanza from Wallace Stevens’s Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird. The poem invokes, among other themes, the idea that as nature we are all connected: the flora and fauna, the air above and the ground below. ‘A man and a woman are one’, he wrote, ‘A man and a woman and a blackbird are one’.” - Gary Green.

All At War Photography by German soldiers 1939-45 Ian Jeffrey In September 1939, thousands of German soldiers were turned loose on Poland. In 1940, they descended on Holland, Belgium and France. In 1941 they went to the Balkans, and then to the USSR. Armed with Leica and Rolleiflex cameras, some of these soldiers were officially commissioned as photographers, while others were asked by their commanders to snap records of events. Some excelled at formal portraiture, others were storytellers, stylists or humanists who wept at what they saw. The style and content of their work changed along with the collective mood after 1942, a change that is discernible in the photographs themselves. Celebrated author and art historian Ian Jeffrey has trawled through these albums, picking out the most compelling of these works to create an intimate record of anonymous lives experiencing the unprecedented.

Strange Things Behind Belgian Windows Jean-Luc Feixa Strange Things Behind Belgian Windows is exactly what its title describes: a series of photos of the strange and intriguing objects people display behind their windows, for passers-by to look at. A stuffed fox, a portrait of Christ, a dusty Egyptian bust, a globe with gaudy colors. They are exhibited like treasures behind a glass screen. Photographer Jean-Luc Feixa roamed the streets and avenues of Brussels for months, with his camera in hand, curious about the hidden spots and the unique colors of his new hometown. In his photos he manages to catch that typically Belgian oddity that’s so hard to put into words: colorful, quirky and a bit surreal.

Black Album Bernd Uhde Bernd Uhde’s aerial photographs explore the world from a helicopter. What we see through his lens is not a vision of untouched nature, but rather a cultural landscape created by humans, which he transforms into images which are both painterly and abstract. In this book, land mined for coal and ore form the central theme. These industrial earthworks are revealed here in all their surprising and disturbing beauty. The images are rendered more visually impactful by the black background they are printed on.

A Notebook for Bad Ideas A perfect notebook in which to risk imperfection Hoxton Mini Press Hoxton Mini Press set out to design the perfect notebook for creative thinkers: it had to lay flat, have beautiful paper and hard-wearing cloth but also be a space where mistakes are welcome. Speaking from experience, the East London publisher recognizes that the major blocks to creativity are lack of confidence and the terror of perfection. This clothbound notebook, whilst being reassuringly beautiful, also contains inspirational quotes on creativity that give the user the permission to let loose on the page, to scribble silliness in complete reassurance that the best ideas often flush out with the worst ones. Life can be a bit messy, after all.

Nostalgic London Ellie Walker-Arnott Following Luster’s Hidden guides on regions, there will now also be themed guides, focusing on a specific subject in or a specific side of a city or region. The first guide in this series will lead you to all the places in London that evoke nostalgia. It’s a guide for visitors who aren’t looking for the newest trendy places-to-be per se, but who are instead more interested in the places where time seems to have stood still, or addresses with a timeless, classic vibe. Author Ellie Walker-Arnott shares nostalgic addresses and places in London, such as romantic ruins, traditional tearooms, iconic department stores and much more.

An Opinionated Guide to Independent London Text by Imogen Lepere. Photography by Lesley Lau

An Opinionated Guide to London Pubs Text by Matthew Curtis. Photography by River Thompson

London’s high streets are becoming ever more homogeneous and, well, downright dull. We can thank Pret A Manger for that. But there’s good news: a wealth of independents are hidden among the chains, you just need to know where to find the best ones. This pocketsized paperback featuring the top 50 indie spots is a celebration of smaller businesses and one-off shops that bring color, personality and style to the scene. Whether you are looking for homeware stores, artisan bakeries, well-curated clothing stores, beautiful coffee hangouts or an indie cinema, this book, full of original photography and insider tips, will tell you where to go.

London is home to over 3,500 pubs. The trouble is that 95% are awful. Dark, sweaty and tired. Says who? Says us.

This unashamedly opinionated guide tells you the only ones you should know. Whether you’re after the perfect Sunday roast, great craft beer, a cozy spot to read a book, the best pint of bitter or a raucous gig, this guide highlights the capital’s most exciting and, crucially, most stylish saloons in which to find it all.

Raphael, Painter and Architect in Rome Itineraries Francesco Benelli and Silvia Ginzburg Raphael arrived in Rome in 1508 and remained there until his death in 1520, working as painter and architect for popes Julius II and Leo X and for the most prestigious patrons. In the Eternal City Raphael practiced architecture for the first time, designing buildings that reflected the models of Antiquity such as the Pantheon, the descriptions deriving from written sources such as Vitruvius’ treaty on architecture, and the examples of modern architects like Donato Bramante. This guide supplies essential and up-to-date information on all the civil or religious buildings designed or built by Raphael in Rome, and the frescoes and paintings, housed in churches or museums, whether executed in the city or arrived there at a later stage.
