A GLASS APART Irish Single Pot Still Whiskey Reprint

Irish single pot still whiskey has a romantic mystique for many whiskey critics because of its tragic history as the ‘lost sister’ of single malt scotch. Ireland’s history and politics resulted in the near-annihilation of the national drink and there’s an almost eerie beauty to the ‘silent’ distilleries that still dot the Irish countryside. These distilleries inform the aesthetic of the title and, indeed, there is visual poetry in the barrels, pot stills and photogenic amber spirits that convey the Irish whiskey world. Although Irish whiskey is currently the fastest-growing global spirits category and Irish ‘pure pot still’ has long been a favourite drink among whiskey critics and connoisseurs, the existing literature is still surprisingly sparse. This book illustrates the production, history, and appreciation of Irish pot still whiskey and will introduce casual drinkers to the richness of these whiskeys as well as being a collectors’ item for established whiskey connoisseurs.

ASTON MARTIN Power, Beauty and Soul Reprint

F o l l o w i n g F o r d M o t o r C o m p a n y ’s majority purchase of Aston Martin in 1987, grave fears were held for the sports car company’s future, indeed, for its very ‘Britishness’. These fears however proved unfounded as the company went from strength to strength under the new ownership. A s t o n M a r t i n : P o w e r, B e a u t y a n d Soul details 64 unique Aston Martins produced in the exciting and productive period following the Ford acquisition. Some are well-known production models, others are after-market conversions by Aston Martin or outside styling houses and engineering companies. Aston Martin’s forays into motorsport during this period are also examined. Author, David Dowsey was granted unprecedented access to photos and details of some of the most extraordinary custom-made vehicles manufactured by Aston Martin for some very special customers. Never-before-seen details of these ultraexpensive hand-built cars are included, along with behind-the-scenes commentary from those closest to these sometimes top-secret projects. Interwoven throughout are stories of the people who brought the cars to life and who were responsible for making this niche company a world-class manufacturer of the most envied luxury vehicles. Comprehensive technical specifications accompany each vehicle, while Mike Harbar’s delightful renderings add a charming bespoke dimension, befitting their subject. CENTERBROOK 4

Centerbrook was conceived in 1975 as a community of architects working together to advance American placemaking and the craft of building. Recipients of the AIA Firm Award, they are entering their fifth decade of designing buildings across the country. This stunning new monograph, edited by John Morris Dixon, FAIA, illustrates in full-color the wide range of projects completed throughout the last decade. COLLISIONS Strategy, design and architecture spark breakthrough ideas

Collisions during the design process yield a positive and powerful energy that is crucial to creating a highperformance workplace. The fundamental understanding of collisions involves the interaction of particles (atoms and molecules) that results in the transformation o f e n e r g y a n d , m o r e b r o a d l y, has systemic and structural implications beyond itself. In practice, PDR advances this concept during the discovery and design phases to enable and encourage collisions with and within the built environment. Successful work environments reflect collisions of exchange, culture, geometry, practice, and elements. Considering these key components increases the chances of a collision being meaningful and productive. PDR creates elegant solutions to complex client challenges by creating and incorporating best practices in interior architecture and design—and by adopting the fundamental building blocks of our universe. PDR walks the reader through these interdisciplinary concepts in a clear, comprehensive and highly illustrated process. This impressive book will resonate with all who are innovative thinkers and seekers of functionally responsive design. Focusing on both tangible and intangible themes, Collisions will provide designers and work culture professionals alike with a rich source of inspiration.

It is our relationship to the natural world.” Diverse styles of landscape projects are presented through all the stages of the process: the vision, design, the plans, the construction process, the details, and the plantings. Isadora Chai began her food journey in a unique manner: she graduated i n B i o c h e m i s t r y, B i o t e c h n o l o g y & Marketing (Hons.) at University of New South Wales, Sydney, and after graduating, she proceeded to take on many hats, from clinical cancer research to marketing in pharmaceuticals. After many years of confusion, she found vocational serenity in her original passion for food. These days, she effortlessly blends the roles of food stylist, personal chef, restaurateur and general cookery genius; frequently operating between Australia and Southeast Asia, residing in Kuala Lumpur and running her own little hole-in-the-wall, Bistro à Table. Through the pages of this extraordinarily beautifully designed book, resplendent with stunning photography, Isadora Chai explores a gastro gourmand’s take on a delicious array of superbly satirical but infinitely edible recipes. Namely, if the degustations at her own little hole-in-the-wall were constantly driven to be out of the box, furthering the mantra, The Reversibles Degustation would look to turning the box inside out. Here she presents a wide range of dishes directly reversed, such as the Reversed Sushi and the Reversed Root Beer Float, where the proportions of the components and the composition of well-known dishes are reversed. And then to take a step further, the courses are also served in a similarly reversible fashion. Intrigued? This book is a spectacular snapshot of a culinary expert whose star continues on the rise.

EVA MADDOX Innovator, Designer, Educator

Eva Maddox’s portfolio of work is so extensive that it would be overwhelming to list all her projects. So for this book Eva selected the most representative of the broad range of interior architecture assignments she has completed, ones that demonstrate the innovative work in patterning and branding with which her name has become associated. The book describes Eva’s teaching and the legacy that she, with Stanley Tigerman, has created in Archeworks, the graduate school that provides a multi-disciplinary education focused on developing solutions to improve the lives of the less privileged and disabled. The five sections of this book deliver a general outline of Eva’s career: Part I outlines her upbringing and early design experiences and concludes with a chapter explaining Eva’s innovative work in branding and patterning. Parts II and III present Eva’s projects as case studies grouped by category to help readers focus on a particular design endeavor and observe the evolution of her pioneering solutions. The text indicates the links between the different types to show how showroom designs led to retail projects, and how the lessons learned from both contributed to Eva’s ability to tackle hospitals, institutions, museums, and more ambitious corporate assignments culminating in the renovated headquarters for her long-term client Haworth. Part IV describes how Eva’s early teaching experiences led to the cofounding of Archeworks and concludes with a look at the many lectures and published articles that reinforced her theories of design. Most of all Eva’s story emphasizes her innovations and her teaching to inspire young men and women in the world of architecture and interior design. NEW ORLEANS Garden City Extraordinaire

Sometimes, the vocation of a place is hard to understand, and seems perverse. New Orleans, like Venice, is built in a location that at first sight seems curious in the extreme. How could it be that these cities, built so precariously in the face of a watery threat, were to become among the great cities of the world? How could a site below sea level, at a swampy curve in the River Mississippi become one of the most visited cities in the United States, and possess a unique kind of magic that separates it from other cities? It seems that the challenge posed by the location, the opportunities created and the resilience of the inhabitants were decisive. By a strangely circuitous route, places that seem to have little promise, are transformed by humans because they created an opportunity at a particular time. This guide, richly photographed, endeavors to highlight these plights. New Orleans has been described by Lawrence N Powell, in his study of New Orleans as The Accidental City. Accidental it certainly is and as a result it assumes the character of a supremely organic city. It really is about growth—growth against the odds and the city has a unique spirit born of its constant battle for survival, frequently handicapped by nature’s capacity to destroy— in the form of hurricanes. The city twists and turns radially with the river and it extended itself in accordance with prevailing needs, with developments responding directly to the needs of ordinary people (and eventually the wealthy) living and working in a sub-tropical location. In spirit and character, New Orleans appears to rise, in the face of apparently overwhelming odds, to become irreplaceable works of the human imagination. Geoffrey H. OUTRIGGER DESIGN FOR HIGH-RISE BUILDINGS CTBUH Outrigger Working Group The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat’s Outrigger Working Group has addressed the pressing need for design guidelines for outrigger systems with this guide, now in its second edition, providing a comprehensive overview of the use of outriggers in skyscrapers. This guide offers detailed recommendations for analysis of outriggers within the lateral load resisting systems of tall buildings, for recognizing and addressing effects on building behavior and for practical design solutions. It also highlights concerns specific to the outrigger structural system, such as differential column shortening and construction sequence impacts. In this edition, a new chapter explores the use of “hybrid” outrigger systems that can “tune” the stiffness of outrigger trusses, use leverage of the outrigger arms to drive non-linear damping devices, and use “yielding” materials that absorb seismic energy. Several project examples are explored in depth, illustrating the role of outrigger systems in tall building designs and providing ideas for future projects. The guide details the impact of outrigger systems on tall building designs, and demonstrates ways in which the technology is continuously advancing to improve the efficiency and stability of tall buildings around the world. The new second edition features updated design considerations to reflect current practices, expanded systems organization and examples, and updated recommendations and suggestions for future research. QUINNIPIAC UNIVERSITY Four Decades Three Campuses Two Presidents One Architect

Quinnipiac University Four Decades Three Campuses Two Presidents One Architect

The year was 1977, and Quinnipiac College was forming a new campus in Hamden, Connecticut. Chance would bring the author and the place together, and for the next forty years Jefferson B. Riley would be Quinnipiac’s architect designing over a hundred renovations, additions, and new buildings on three separate campuses that now comprise Quinnipiac University. The University thus became Riley’s devotion, vigorously so after the arrival of Dr. John L. Lahey in 1987 who, as its eighth president, personally put Quinnipiac University on its path to national prominence. Riley’s work has not only helped to give Quinnipiac roots but also wings. Here, then, is a comprehensive architectural account of Quinnipiac from 1977 to 2017.

REBRANDING DESIGN

D

The business working through the concept of rebranding itself must ask the following questions: is this an appropriate time for such substantive work? Are we talking about a soft evolution or metamorphosis? Does this rebranding address a clearly identified problem, and can it represent a genuine asset for development? For designers, even if these questions remain central, other issues also arise: how to produce a distinctive project in the face of a profusion of branding works available online? How to produce relevant and appreciated work in a challenging economic and social environment? This book brings together some of the best rebranding projects in the world and addresses these key issues formally and with real substance, and places the crucial—and sometimes underestimated—role of the brand design in the developmental processes of companies, institutions or associations.

SCDA LANDSCAPE The Landscapes of Soo Chan

SCDA Landscape forms an integral part in the firm’s holistic approach to design that integrates architecture, interiors and landscape. Reinforcing a dialogue between Internal and External spaces, projects range in scale from private residential homes, hotels and resorts to mixed-use developments and master plans in various countries within Asia, North America and Europe. The approach follows an inherent classical flow of space, with layering of hardscape and planting elements forming outdoor rooms, extensions of internal living spaces. Proportion, materiality and detail are defining elements that create serene, enduring and defined spaces that enhance the negative spaces between buildings. Sculpture, furniture and lighting are considered at the conceptual stage, important elements in the formation of the overall landscaped approach. The sensory experience of water is utilized and integrated with contemporary landscape elements to structure space, define hierarchy and strengthen the sense of place. Through the careful use and integration of hard and soft elements each project addresses programmatic and environmental requirements, while creating a distinctively poetic and elegant space. This volume showcases the firm’s commitment to innovation for environmental design and contemporary flair across all living spaces.

THE WOODEN BICYCLE Around the World Up until about a century ago, wood had always been the only available material for the construction of the first bicycles, and it was as recently as the 1950s that wood was the only material used for bike wheels in all competitive cycling realms. These days, in opposition to the great industrialization of steel manufacturing, wood and bamboo are increasingly being used to create a niche space in design within the industries of transportation, sport, art, culture—and indeed modern lives in general. With the significant advances in technological research and application, wood and bamboo are increasingly being promoted as materials suitable for the construction of bicycle frames and individual bicycle components. Showcasing more than 250 designers from around the world, including craftspeople (many of them renowned bicycle makers), manufacturers and associated organizations, this book dedicates hundreds of pages to beautiful bike designs, illuminating the latest modern trends in specialist bicycle craftmanship. Set out with detailed, distinctive design dialogues from each craftsperson or manufacturer, we learn how wood and bamboo are being enhanced and developed as extremely durable, aesthetically appealing materials, and which are considered sustainable, ecologically viable, user friendly and dynamic across each application. Beautifully illustrated, with historical references and texts by experts in the trade, and backed up with technical engineering knowledge, The Wooden Bicycle is a handy reference for those who have a true passion for the beauty and aesthetics of the modern bicycle in the wooden form, and a strong belief in a more sustainable way of living.
